1WJSC 6^(th) Anniversary Special Issues(2):Mesenchymal stem cells Mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of spinal cord injuries:A review显示文摘With technological advances in basic research,the intricate mechanism of secondary delayed spinal cord injury(SCI)continues to unravel at a rapid pace.However,despite our deeper understanding of the molecular changes occurring after initial insult to the spinal cord,the cure for paralysis remains elusive.Current treatment of SCI is limited to early administration of high dose steroids to mitigate the harmful effect of cord edema that occurs after SCI and to reduce the cascade of secondary delayed SCI.R ecent evident-based clinical studies have cast doubt on the clinical benefit of steroids in SCI and intense focus on stem cell-based therapy has yielded some encouraging results.An array of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)from various sources with novel and promising strategies are being developed to improve function after SCI.In this review,we briefly discuss the pathophysiology of spinal cord injuries and characteristics and the potential sources of MSCs that can be used in the treatment of SCI.We will discuss the progress of MSCs application in research,focusing on the neuroprotective properties of MSCs.Finally,we will discuss the results from preclinical and clinical trials involving stem cell-based therapy in SCI.Venkata Ramesh Dasari Krishna Kumar Veeravalli Dzung H Dinh 2014World Journal of Stem Cells2014,6,2:32

4Prediction of oil-water flow patterns, radial distribution of volume fraction, pressure and velocity during separated flows in horizontal pipe显示文摘Flow of two immiscible fluids gives rise to variety of flow patterns,which influence transportation process.In this work,we present detailed analysis on the prediction of flow pattern maps and radial distribution of volume fraction,pressure and velocity of a pair of immiscible liquids through a horizontal pipeline by computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation using ANSYS FLUENT 6.3.Moderately viscous oil and water have been taken as the fluid pair for study.Volume of fluid(VOF) method has been employed to predict various flow patterns by assuming unsteady flow,immiscible liquid pair,constant liquid properties,and co-axial flow.From the grid independent study,we have selected 47 037 number of quadrilateral mesh elements for the entire geometry.Simulation successfully predicts almost all the flow patterns(viz.,plug,slug,stratified wavy,stratified mixed and annular),except dispersion of oil in water and dispersion of water in oil.The simulated results are validated with experimental results of oil volume fraction and flow pattern map.Radial distribution of volume fraction,pressure and velocity profiles describe the nature of the stratified wavy,stratified mixed and annular flow pattern.These profiles help to developing the phenomenological correlations of interfacial characteristics in two-phase flow.Anand B.DESAMALA Vinayak VIJAYAN Anjali DASARI Ashok Kumar DASMAHAPATRA Tapas K.MANDAL 2016Journal of Hydrodynamics2016,28,4:3
5Fabrication of Schiff base coordinated ZnS nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of chlorpyrifos pesticide and detection of heavy metal ions显示文摘We report the simple synthesis of zinc sulfide nanoparticles(ZnS NPs)by a co-precipitation method using Schiff base,(2-[(4-methoxy-phenylimino)-methyl]-4-nitrophenol)as a capping agent.The formation of ZnS NPs and their optical,structural,thermal properties and morphologies were studied by means of UVevis DRS,PL,FTIR,XRD,SEM,TEM,and TGA.The optical properties and quantum confinement effect of the products were confirmed by means of spectroscopic measurements.We have accessed the photocatalytic ability of the prepared ZnS and Schiff base capped ZnS NPs in the degradation of chlorpyrifos under UV light irradiation for the prevention of environmental pollution.The prepared ZnS NPs exhibited a selective probe detection of Fe^(3+),Cr^(2+) and Cd^(2+) ions by fluorometrically and the emission band which disappears in the presence of increasing concentrations of Fe^(3+),Cr^(2+) and Cd^(2+) ions.Our work suggested that the synthesized Schiff base capped ZnS NPs could be a potential selective photocatalyst for the degradation of toxic pollutants and a selective probe sensor for the detection of heavy metal ions.Dasari Ayodhya Guttena Veerabhadram 2019Journal of Materiomics2019,5,3:3
6Brucellosis and tuberculosis:Clinical overlap and pitfalls显示文摘Objective:To identify characteristic features of tuberculosis in patients with culture proven brucellosis.Methods:A retrospective analysis was performed on patients diagnosed with culture proven brucellosis between January and December 2011,based on review of their medical records.Patients with demonstrable co-infection with tuberculosis were excluded.Clinical features,laboratory parameters and tissue histopathology reports where available were noted.Results:Thirty-two patients with brucellosis were included in the study.Twenty-one(65.63%)patients had chronic fever,thirteen(40.63%)had a productive cough,while significant weight loss,evening rise of temperature and night sweats were reported by eight(25.00%),eleven(34.38%)and five(15.63%)patients respectively.Nine(28.13%)patients had at least three of these symptoms.Lymphadenopathy,hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were noted on examination in seven(21.88%),fifteen(46.88%)and twelve(37.50%)patients respectively.Eight(25.00%)patients had hepatosplenomegaly,of these only two had associated significant lymphadenopathy.Respiratory examination was normal in all patients.Elevated ESR greater than 50 mm/hr was seen in eight(25.00%),it was greater than 100 mm/hr in five(15.63%)patients.Hypergammaglobulinemia was seen in eight(25.00%)cases.Bone marrow biopsy showed non-caseating granulomas in three(9.38%)cases,lymph node biopsy showed granulomas in one case.Overall,three(9.38%)patients had known risk factors for tuberculosis,while six(18.75%)had risk factors for brucellosis.Conclusions:There is a clear overlap between brucellosis and tuberculosis both in terms of clinical presentation and laboratory parameters.It is essential to c-arefully rule out tuberculosis in all cases of suspected or proven brucellosis before initiating antimicrobial therapy,in order to forestall development of drug-resistant tuberculosis.Sowjanya Dasari Kushal Naha Mukhyaprana Prabhu 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,10:2

8Para-aortic lymph node involvement should not be a contraindication to resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma显示文摘BACKGROUND Para-aortic lymph nodes(PALN)are found in the aortocaval groove and they are staged as metastatic disease if involved by pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC).The data in the literature is conflicting with some studies having associated PALN involvement with poor prognosis,while others not sharing the same results.PALN resection is not included in the standard lymphadenectomy during pancreatic resections as per the International Study Group for Pancreatic Surgery and there is no consensus on the management of these cases.AIM To investigate the prognostic significance of PALN metastases on the oncological outcomes after resection for PDAC.METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study of data retrieved from a prospectively maintained database on consecutive patients undergoing pancreatectomies for PDAC where PALN was sampled between 2011 and 2020.Statistical comparison of the data between PALN+and PALN-subgroups,survival analysis with the Kaplan-Meier method and risk analysis with univariable and multivariable time to event Cox regression analysis were performed,specifically assessing oncological outcomes such as median overall survival(OS)and disease-free survival(DFS).RESULTS 81 cases had PALN sampling and 17(21%)were positive.Pathological N stage was significantly different between PALN+and PALN-patients(P=0.005),while no difference was observed in any of the other characteristics.Preoperative imaging diagnosed PALN positivity in one case.OS and DFS were comparable between PALN+and PALN-patients with lymph node positive disease(OS:13.2 mo vs 18.8 mo,P=0.161;DFS:13 mo vs 16.4 mo,P=0.179).No difference in OS or DFS was identified between PALN positive and negative patients when they received chemotherapy either in the neoadjuvant or in the adjuvant setting(OS:23.4 mo vs 20.6 mo,P=0.192;DFS:23.9 mo vs 20.5 mo,P=0.718).On the contrary,when patients did not receive chemotherapy,PALN disease had substantially shorter OS(5.5 mo vs 14.2 mo;P=0.015)and DFS(4.4 mo vs 9.8 mo;P<0.001).PALN involvement was not identified as an independent predictor for OS after multivariable analysis,while it was for DFS doubling the risk of recurrence.CONCLUSION PALN involvement does not affect OS when patients complete the indicated treatment pathway for PDAC,surgery and chemotherapy,and should not be considered as a contraindication to resection.Rupaly Pande Shafiq Chughtai Manish Ahuja Rachel Brown David C Bartlett Bobby V Dasari Ravi Marudanayagam Darius Mirza Keith Roberts John Isaac Robert P Sutcliffe Nikolaos A Chatzizacharias 2022World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2022,14,5:2

11Synthesis and Characterization of C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 and CQD/C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 Photocatalysts with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activities Under Sunlight Irradiation显示文摘Sunlight-driven C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 composites were synthesized with different weight fractions of FeTiO_3.The as-prepared samples were characterized by UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction analysis,transmission electron microscopy,scanning electron microscopy,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,and photoluminescence.Under sunlight irradiation,the C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 photocatalysts degraded methyl orange(MO) efficiently and displayed much higher photocatalytic activity than that of pure FeTiO_3 or carbon-doped titanium dioxide(C-TiO_2),and the C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 photocatalyst with 10 wt%of FeTiO_3 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity.The enhancement of photocatalytic activity was mainly ascribed to the formation of a heterojunction between C-TiO_2 and FeTiO_3,which facilitated the transfer and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.The quenching effects of different scavengers demonstrated that the reactive superoxide radicals(O_2^-) and hydroxyl radicals(OH) played a major role in the MO degradation.The possible photocatalytic mechanism is discussed on the basis of the band structures of C-TiO_2 and FeTiO_3.To further enhance the photocatalytic efficiency,double-heterojunctioned CQD/C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 composite was prepared by loading carbon quantum dots onto the C-TiO_2/FeTiO_3 surface.Ramakrishna Dadigala Bhagavanth Reddy Gangapuram Rajkumar Bandi Ayodhya Dasari Veerabhadram Guttena 2016Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)2016,29,1:2
