1Combined transplantation of GDAs^(BMP) and hr-decorin in spinal cord contusion repair显示文摘Following spinal cord injury, astrocyte proliferation and scar formation are the main factors inhibiting the regeneration and growth of spinal cord axons. Recombinant decorin suppresses inflammatory reactions, inhibits glial scar formation, and promotes axonal growth. Rat models of T8 spinal cord contusion were created with the NYU impactor and these models were subjected to combined transplantation of bone morphogenetic protein-4-induced glial-restricted precursor-derived astrocytes and human recombinant decorin transplantation. At 28 days after spinal cord contusion, double-immunofluorescent histochemistry revealed that combined transplantation inhibited the early inflammatory response in injured rats. Furthermore, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which was secreted by transplanted cells, protected injured axons. The combined transplantation promoted axonal regeneration and growth of injured motor and sensory neurons by inhibiting astrocyte proliferation and glial scar formation, with astrocytes forming a linear arrangement in the contused spinal cord, thus providing axonal regeneration channels.Liang Wu Jianjun Li Liang Chen Hong Zhang Li Yuan Stephen JA Davies 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,24:6
2The application of carbon materials in nonaqueous Na‐O2 batteries显示文摘Na‐O2 batteries are advantageous as the candidates of next‐generation electric vehicles due to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density and have attracted enormous attention recently.Tremendous efforts have been devoted to improve the Na‐O2 battery performance by designing advanced electrodes with various carbonbased materials.Carbon materials used in Na‐O2 batteries not only function as the air electrode to provide active sites and accommodate discharge products but also as Na anode protectors against dendrite growth and chemical/electrochemical corrosion.In this review,we mainly focus on the application of various carbonbased materials in Na‐O2 batteries and highlight their advances.The scientific understanding on the fundamental design of the material microstructure and chemistry in relation to the battery performance are summarized.Finally,perspectives on enhancing the overall battery performance based on the optimization and rational design of carbon‐based cell components are also briefly anticipated.Xiaoting Lin Qian Sun Kieran Doyle Davis Ruying Li Xueliang Sun 2019Carbon Energy2019,1,2:5

4Optimization of micropatterned poly(lactic-coglycolic acid) films for enhancing dorsal root ganglion cell orientation and extension显示文摘Nerve conduits have been a viable alternative to the ‘gold standard' autograft for treating small peripheral nerve gap injuries. However, they often produce inadequate functional recovery outcomes and are ineffective in large gap injuries. Ridge/groove surface micropatterning has been shown to promote neural cell orientation and guide growth. However, optimization of the ratio of ridge/groove parameters to promote orientation and extension for dorsal root ganglion(DRG) cells on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)(PLGA) films has not been previously conducted. Photolithography and micro-molding were used to define various combinations of ridge/groove dimensions on PLGA films. The DRG cells obtained from chicken embryos were cultured on micropatterned PLGA films for cell orientation and migration evaluation. Biodegradation of the films occurred during the test period, however, this did not cause deformation or distortion of the micropatterns. Results from the DRG cell orientation test suggest that when the ridge/groove ratio equals 1(ridge/groove width parameters are equal, i.e., 10 μm/10 μm(even)), the degree of alignment depends on the size of the ridges and grooves, when the ratio is smaller than 1(groove controlled) the alignment increases as the ridge size decreases, and when the ratio is larger than 1(ridge controlled), the alignment is reduced as the width of the grooves decreases. The migration rate and neurite extension of DRG neurons were greatest on 10 μm/10 μm and 30 μm/30 μm micropatterned PLGA films. 5The E3 ligase XBAT35 mediates thermoresponsive hypocotyl growth by targeting ELF3 for degradation in Arabidopsis显示文摘Plants are capable of coordination of their growth and development with ambient temperatures.EARLY FLOWERING3(ELF3), an essential component of the plant circadian clock, is also involved in ambient temperature sensing, as well as in inhibiting the expression and protein activity of the thermoresponsive regulator phytochrome interacting factor4(PIF4). The ELF3 activity is subjected to attenuation in response to warm temperature;however,how the protein level of ELF3 is regulated at warm temperature remains less understood. Here, we report that the E3 ligase XB3 ORTHOLOG 5 IN ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA, XBAT35, mediates ELF3 degradation. XBAT35 interacts with ELF3 and ubiquitinates ELF3. Loss-of-function mutation of XBAT35 increases the protein level of ELF3 and confers a short-hypocotyl phenotype under warm temperature conditions. 6Comparison of Two Dose-response Relationship of Noise Exposure Evaluation Results with High Frequency Hearing Loss显示文摘Background: Complex noise and its relation to hearing loss are difficult to measure and evaluate. In complex noise measurement, individual exposure results may not accurately represent lifetime noise exposure. Thus, the mean LAcq.8h values of individuals in the same workgroup were also used to represent LAcq.8h in our study. Our study aimed to explore whether the mean exposure levels of workers in the same workgroup represented real noise exposure better than individual exposure levels did. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to establish a model for cumulative noise exposure (CNE) and hearing loss in 205 occupational noise-exposed workers who were recruited from two large automobile manufacturers in China. We used a personal noise dosimeter and a questionnaire to determine the workers' occupational noise exposure levels and exposure times, respectively. A qualified audiologist used standardized audiometric procedures to assess hearing acuity after at least 16 h of noise avoidance. Results: We observed that 88.3% of workers were exposed to more than 85 dB(A) of occupational noise (mean: 89.3 ± 4.2 dB(A)). The personal CNE (CNEp) and workgroup CNE (CNEg) were 100.5 ± 4.7 dB(A) and 100.5 ± 2.9 dB(A), respectively. In the binary logistic regression analysis, we established a regression model with high-frequency hearing loss as the dependent variable and CNE as the independent variable. The Wald value was 5.014 with CNEp as the independent variable and 8.653 with CNEg as the independent variable. Furthermore, we found that the figure for CNEg was more similar to the stationary noise reference than CNEp was. The CNEg model was better than the CNEp model. In this circumstance, we can measure some subjects instead of the whole workgroup and save manpower. 10Frequency-tunable continuous-wave random lasers at terahertz frequencies显示文摘Random lasers are a class of devices in which feedback arises from multiple elastic scattering in a highly disordered structure,providing an almost ideal light source for artefact-free imaging due to achievable low spatial coherence.However,for many applications ranging from sensing and spectroscopy to speckle-free imaging,it is essential to have high-radiance sources operating in continuous-wave(CW).In this paper,we demonstrate CW operation of a random laser using an electrically pumped quantum-cascade laser gain medium in which a bi-dimensional(2D)random distribution of air holes is patterned into the top metal waveguide.We obtain a highly collimated vertical emission at ~3 THz,with a 430 GHz bandwidth,device operation up to 110 K,peak(pulsed)power of 21 mW,and CW emission of 1.7 mW.Furthermore,we show that an external cavity formed with a movable mirror can be used to tune a random laser,obtaining continuous frequency tuning over 11 GHz.Simone Biasco Harvey E.Beere David A.Ritchie Lianhe Li AGiles Davies Edmund H.Linfield Miriam S.Vitiello 2019Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1:2

17Terahertz emission from localized modes in one-dimensional disordered systems [Invited]显示文摘We demonstrate terahertz(THz) frequency laser emission around 3.2 THz from localized modes in one-dimensional disordered grating systems. The disordered structures are patterned on top of the double-metal waveguide of a THz quantum cascade laser. Multiple emission peaks are observed within a frequency range corresponding to the bandgap of a periodic counterpart with no disorder, indicating the presence of mode localization aided by Bragg scattering.
