| 1 | Predicting the spread of nuclear radiation from the damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant显示文摘Japan suffered a M9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami on March 11, 2011, which seriously damaged the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and caused a nuclear crisis. The spread of nuclear radiation from the power plant through the atmosphere and ocean was predicted with a short-term climate forecasting model and an ocean circulation model under some idealized assumptions. If nuclear matter were leaked in the near-ground layer of 992 hPa, the climate model results show that the nuclear radiation would cover North America 10 days after the initial leakage, with the concentration at the forefront dramatically reduced to 10 millionths of the initial model concentration at the source. The radiation would span Europe in 15 days and cover much of the Northern Hemisphere in 30 days. If the initial leakage was assumed to occur in the layer 5000-m above the ground, the radiation would cover Europe in 10 days and cover much of the Northern Hemisphere in 15 days. Moreover, under the assumption that the nuclear matter leaked in the 10000-m layer, the radiation would affect much of China after 10 days. The ocean circulation model indicates that the nuclear material would be slowly transported northeast of Fukushima and reach 150°E in 50 days, and the nuclear debris in the ocean would be confined to a narrow band. Compared with the spread in the ocean, the area affected by leaked nuclear radiation in the atmosphere would be very large. | 2 | WHEAT STRIPE RUST AND INTEGRATION OF SUSTAINABLE CONTROL STRATEGIES IN CHINA显示文摘Stripe (yellow) rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici occurs in almost allwheat-producing regions of the world. Severe countrywide epidemics in Chinahave caused substantial yield losses. Growing resistant cultivars is the beststrategy to control this disease but the pathogen can overcome resistance inwheat cultivars. The high variation in the virulence of the pathogen combinedwith the large areas of susceptible wheat cultivars enables the pathogenpopulation to increase rapidly and disperse over long distances under favorableenvironmental conditions, resulting in severe pandemics within croppingseasons. Current stripe rust control measures are based on many years ofresearch including the underlying epidemiology regarding year-to-year survivalof the pathogen, pathways of pathogen dispersal within seasons and years, therole of P. striiformis sexual hybridization, the use of resistance sources inbreeding programs, and year-round surveillance of national wheat crops that arepresent in different parts of the country throughout the year. | 3 | Optimized design and experiment on ring mold pelletizer for producing biomass fuel pellets显示文摘The forming process of biomass fuel pellets using a ring mold pelletizer was analyzed,optimized,tested and evaluated in this study.The effects of stress amplitude and the stress ratio on the fatigue failure of the ring mold under 4-,3-,and 2-roller designs were investigated.Depending on the calculation of stress amplitude acting on the ring mold,the 4-roller design was chosen for having the smallest value of stress amplitude in this condition.After determining the main design parameters,a three-dimensional model of the ring mold pelletizer was established based on the Pro/Engineer software,and the model was transferred into ADAMS software through Mechanism/Pro which is a dedicated interface software.The ADAMS software was used to run simulations.In order to obtain the highest efficiency and the lowest power consumption,the optimal result was the 4-roller design.Finally,a prototype of the ring mold pelletizer with four rollers was designed and manufactured for biomass fuel pellet production.Corn stover biomass was used as material for experimental manufacturing of fuel pellets.Test and evaluation showed that the optimized pellet durability was 99.79%with ground corn stover particles passing a screen size of 1.97 mm,moisture content of 21.2%w.b.and a material moisture conditioning time of 3.82 h.Pellets formed in the prototype ring mold pelletizer using corn stover had acceptable durability according to European standards. | Gao Wei Lope G Tabil Zhao Rongfei Liu Dejun | 2016 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2016,9,3: | 3 |

| 5 | In vitro comparison of the hemocompatibility of diamond-like carbon and carbon nitride coatings with different atomic percentages of N显示文摘Carbon nitride (CNx) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Different partial pressures of N2 were used to synthesize CNx to evaluate the relationship between the atomic percentage of nitrogen and hemocompatibility. Auger electron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy indicated atomic percentages of N of 0.12 and 0.22 and that the CNx coatings were smooth. An in vitro study of the hemocompatibility of the coatings revealed that both CNx coatings had better anticoagulant properties and lower platelet adhesion than DLC. Compared with CN0.12, the CN0.22 coating showed longer dynamic clotting time (about 42 min), static clotting time (23.6 min) and recalcification time (45.6 s), as well as lower platelet adhesion (102 cells μm 2), aggregation, and activation.
