1Effect of carbon source on the denitrification in constructed wetlands显示文摘The ability of constructed wetlands with different plants in nitrate removal were investigated. The factors promoting the rates of denitrification including organic carbon, nitrate load, plants in wetlands, pH and water temperature in field were systematically investigated. The results showed that the additional carbon source (glucose) can remarkably improve the nitrate removal ability of the constructed wetland. It demonstrated that the nitrate removal rate can increase from 20% to more than 50% in summer and from 10% to 30% in winter, when the nitrate concentration was 30–40 mg/L, the retention time was 24 h and 25 mg/L dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was ploughed into the constructed wetland. However, the nitrite in the constructed wetland accumulated a little with the supply of the additional carbon source in summer and winter, and it increased from 0.15 to 2 mg/L in the effuent. It was also found that the abilities of plant in adjusting pH and temperature can result in an increase of denitrification in wetlands. 3Tert-butylhydroquinone-decorated graphene nanosheets and their enhanced capacitive behaviors显示文摘In the present work,tert-butylhydroquinone(TBHQ) was used to decorate graphene nanosheets to obtain a novel and environmentally friendly electrode material for supercapacitors.The fast redox reactions between hydroquinone and quinone generate pseudocapacitance.Graphene layers which have adsorbed TBHQ interact with each other to construct a three-dimensional network.Through this network,electrolyte ions can easily access the surface of graphene to generate electric double-layer capacitance.Electrochemical measurements have shown that using TBHQ as a redox modifier of graphene can obtain a maximum value of 302 F g-1 and provide a 51% enhancement in specific capacitance.Furthermore,excellent rate capability and cycling ability are achieved using the TBHQ-decorated graphene nanosheet electrode.WANG HuanWen WU HongYing CHANG YanQin CHEN YanLi HU ZhongAi 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,20:9
4Growth and Repair Potential of Three Species of Bacteria in Reclaimed Wastewater after UV Disinfection显示文摘Objective The growth and repair potential of three typical microorganisms in reclaimed water after UV disinfection was investigated to assess the effects of photo-reactivation and dark repair of microorganisms,and the microbial safety of reclaimed water following this procedure.Methods The growth and repair potential of Escherichia coli,a fecal coliform strain and Bacillus subtilis in the effluent of a biological wastewater treatment plant disinfected by a low-pressure UV lamp were investigated.Results Any increase in bacterial numbers in the effluent after UV disinfection was due to damage repair.Exposure to photo-reactivating light for 8-10 h after UV irradiation with a dose of 5 mJ/cm 2,the highest percentage of photo-reactivation observed for E.coli and the fecal coliform strain was 29% and 15% respectively.B.subtilis showed little photo-reactivation under these conditions.The percentage of photo-reactivation was related to the UV dose and the photo-reactivating time,and a function was developed to forecast the final concentrations of E.coli and the fecal coliform strain after UV disinfection with possible photo-reactivation.Conclusion Different species of bacteria displayed different responses to UV light and different repair potentials.The repair of indigenous bacteria in wastewater needs to be investigated in future work.GUO MeiTing HUANG JingJing HU HongYing LIU WenJun 2011Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2011,24,4:8
5A novel integrated UV-biofilter system to treat high concentration of gaseous chlorobenzene显示文摘A novel integrated UV-biofilter system using UV reactor as the pretreatment process was setup to trea high concentration of gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Another control biofilter withou the UV pretreatment was also established to compare the performance of the two systems. Chloro benzene was selected as a model compound. The two systems were operated in parallel under differen inlet chlorobenzene concentrations (500, 1000, 1600, mg·m?3). The experimental results indicate tha the integrated system could eliminate chlorobenzene completely (100% removal efficiency) at the inle concentration of 500 mg·m?3, whereas only 60% removal efficiency was achieved for the control biofi ter. Also the elimination capacity for the organic carbon of the integrated system was much higher tha that of the control biofilter. On the basis of intermediates analysis by Ion Chromatography and Ga Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, the UV pretreatment has been proven to be able to enhance th performance of the following biofilter by transferring the recalcitrant target to some more biodegrad able and soluble organic products (such as formic acid and chlorophenol). 6Comparison of the short-term and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic hysterectomies and of abdominal hysterectomies: a case study of 4,895 patients in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China显示文摘Background: To evaluate the short-term and long-term outcomes after laparoscopic hysterectomy(LH) compared with abdominal hysterectomy(AH) in case of benign gynecological disease. Methods: A multi-center cohort retrospective comparative study of population among 4,895 hysterectomies(3,539 LH vs.1,356 AH) between 2007 and 2013 was involved. Operative time(OT), estimated blood loss(EBL), intra-operative and post-operative complications, passing flatus; days with indwelling catheter, questionnaires covering pelvic floor functions and sexual functions were assessed.Results: The EBL(174.1±157.4 vs. 263.1±183.2 cc, LH and AH groups, respectively), passing flatus(38.7±14.1 vs. 48.1±13.2 hours), days with indwelling catheter(1.5±0.6 vs. 2.2±0.8 days), use of analgesics(6.5% vs. 73.1%), intra-operative complication rate(2.4% vs. 4.1%), post-operative complication rate(2.3% vs. 5.7%), post-operative constipation(12.1% vs. 24.6%), mild and serious stress urinary incontinence(SUI) post-operative(P<0.001; P=0.014), and proportion of Female Sexual Functioning Index(FSFI) total score <26.55 post-operative(P<0.001) of the LH group were significantly less than those of AH group. There wereno significant differences in OT(106.5±34.5 vs. 106.2±40.3 min) between the two groups.Conclusions: LH is a safe and efficient operation for improving patients' long-term quality of life(Qo L), and LH is a cost-effectiveness procedure for treating benign gynecological disease. 7CMHX008,a PPAR γ partial agonist,enhances insulin sensitivity with minor influences on bone loss显示文摘Traditional thiazolidinediones(TZDs),such as rosiglitazone,are peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor g(PPARg)potent agonists that can be used to treat type 2 diabetes but carry unwanted effects,including increased risk for fracture.The present work aimed to compare the insulin-sensitizing efficacies and bone-loss side effects of CMHX008,a novel TZDs-like PPARg partial agonist,with those of rosiglitazone.A TR-FRET PPARg competitive binding assay was used to compare the binding affinity between CMHX008 and rosiglitazone.Mice were administered vehicle,CMHX008 or rosiglitazone for 16 weeks.Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)were used to examine differences in differentiation into osteoblasts after compounds treatment.TR-FRET showed lower affinity to PPARg by CMHX008 compared with rosiglitazone.Mice treated with CMHX008 showed insulin sensitization similar to that of mice treated with rosiglitazone,which was related to the significant inhibition of PPARg Ser273 phosphorylation and improved insulin sensitivity by facilitating the phosphorylation of insulin receptor and Akt in adipose tissues.Micro-CT and histomorphometric analyses demonstrated that the degree of trabecular bone loss after treatment with CMHX008 was weaker than that observed with rosiglitazone,as evidenced by consistent changes in BV/TV,Tb.N,Tb.Th,Tb.Sp,and the mineral apposition rate.MSCs treated with CMHX008 showed higher ALP activity and mRNA levels of bone formation markers than did cells treated with rosiglitazone in the osteoblast differentiation test.Thus,CMHX008 showed insulin-sensitizing effects similar to those of rosiglitazone with a lower risk of bone loss,suggesting that PPARg sparing eliminates the skeletal side effects of TZDs while maintaining their insulin-sensitizing properties.Yi Hou Xuemei Cao Xiangnan Hu Xinyu Li Xiaoqin Shi Hongying Wang Chuan Peng Jiayu Li Jibin Li Qifu Li Chaodong Wu Xiaoqiu Xiao 2018Genes & Diseases2018,5,3:6
8Algal-bloom control by allelopathy of aquatic macrophytes—A review显示文摘Algal-bloom control is an important issue for water environment protection as it induces several negative impacts on the lives of aquatic organisms,aquaculture,landscaping,and human health.The development of an environment-friendly,cost-effective,and convenient alternative for controlling algal bloom has gained much concern.Using the allelopathy of aquatic macrophytes as a novel and safe method for algal-bloom control is a promising alternative.This paper reviews the development and potential application about allelopathy of aquatic plants on algae,including the allelopathic research history,the potential research problems,the research methodology,and the reported aquatic macrophytes and their inhibitory allelochemicals.Potential modes of inhibition action of allelochemicals on algae,possible ways for application,and future development directions of research on algal-bloom control by aquatic macrophytes were also presented.Hongying HU Yu HONG 2008Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2008,2,4:6
9Denitrification and biofilm growth in a pilot-scale biofilter packed with suspended carriers for biological nitrogen removal from secondary effluent显示文摘Tertiary denitrification is an effective method for nitrogen removal from wastewater. A pilot-scale biofilter packed with suspended carriers was operated for tertiary denitrification with ethanol as the organic carbon source. Long-term performance, biokinetics of denitrification and biofilm growth were evaluated under filtration velocities of 6, 10 and 14 m/hr. The pilot-scale biofilter removed nitrate from the secondary effluent effectively, and the nitrate nitrogen(NO_3-N) removal percentage was 82%, 78% and 55% at the filtration velocities of 6, 10 and 14 m/hr, respectively. At the filtration velocities of 6 and 10 m/hr, the nitrate removal loading rate increased with increasing influent nitrate loading rates, while at the filtration velocity of 14 m/hr, the removal loading rate and the influent loading rate were uncorrelated.During denitrification, the ratio of consumed chemical oxygen demand to removed NO_3-N was 3.99–4.52 mg/mg. Under the filtration velocities of 6, 10 and 14 m/hr, the maximum denitrification rate was 3.12, 4.86 and 4.42 g N/(m^2·day), the half-saturation constant was 2.61, 1.05 and 1.17 mg/L, and the half-order coefficient was 0.22, 0.32 and 0.24(mg/L)1/2/min,respectively. The biofilm biomass increased with increasing filtration velocity and was 2845,5124 and 7324 mg VSS/m^2 at filtration velocities of 6, 10 and 14 m/hr, respectively. The highest biofilm density was 44 mg/cm^3 at the filtration velocity of 14 m/hr. 14Removal of C.I.Reactive Red 2 by low pressure UV/chlorine advanced oxidation显示文摘Azo dyes are commonly found as pollutants in wastewater from the textile industry,and can cause environmental problems because of their color and toxicity.The removal of a typical azo dye named C.I.Reactive Red 2(RR2) during low pressure ultraviolet(UV)/chlorine oxidation was investigated in this study.UV irradiation at 254 nm and addition of free chlorine provided much higher removal rates of RR2 and color than UV irradiation or chlorination alone.Increasing the free chlorine dose enhanced the removal efficiency of RR2 and color by UV/chlorine oxidation.Experiments performed with nitrobenzene(NB)or benzoic acid(BA) as scavengers showed that radicals(especially OH) formed during UV/chlorine oxidation are important in the RR2 removal.Addition of HCO_3^- and Cl^- to the RR2 solution did not inhibit the removal of RR2 during UV/chlorine oxidation.Qianyuan Wu Yue Li Wenlong Wang Ting Wang Hongying Hu 2016Journal of Environmental Sciences2016,28,3:4
15Genotoxicity removal of reclaimed water during ozonation显示文摘Genotoxicity in wastewater and reclaimed water now is gaining increased attention because of genotoxins' potential damage to the ecosystem and human health. The effect of ozonation on genotoxicity in reclaimed water was investigated. It was found that ozonation decreased the genotoxicy dramatically in three tertiary treatment plants. In the further batch ozonation experiment in laboratory,secondary effluent sample used exhibited the genotoxicity of(41.1 ± 4.1) μg 4NQO/L. Ozonation with a dose of 10 mg O3/L completely removed the genotoxicity in secondary effluent. However,after ozonation, the dissolved organic carbonvalue of the sample didn't change much but the specific ultraviolet absorbance(SUVA) value dropped sharply. 16Allelopathic inhibition on red tide microalgae Skeletonema costatum by five macroalgal extracts显示文摘This study aims to identify effective antialgal allelochemicals from marine macroalgae that inhibit the growth of red tide microalgae.Practically,new algicidal agents were developed to control red tide.The growth inhibitory effects of 5 marine macroalgae Porphyra tenera,Laminaria japonica,Ulva pertusa,Enteromorpha clathrata,and Undaria pinnatifida on Skeletonema costatum were evaluated by adding crude seawater extracts of macroalgal dry tissue into the culture medium containing S.costatum.The half-effective concentrations at 120 h(EC_(50),120 h)of the seawater extracts were 0.6,0.9,1.0,1.0,and 4.7 g/L for the five macroalgae above,respectively.E.clathrata,L.japonica and U.pertusa showed strong allelopathic effect on the growth of S.costatum.There have been no previous reports with regard to the allelopathic effects of the former two macroalgae so far.The possible allelochemicals of 21 compounds of the E.clathrata were detected using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)analysis.Unsaturated fatty acids,acrylic acid(C_(3)H_(4)O_(2)),and linolenic acid(C_(18)H_(30)O_(2))were the most likely allelochemicals in E.clathrata.Zhen AN Zhenyu WANG Fengmin LI Zhijia TIAN Hongying HU 2008Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2008,2,3:4
17Stainless steel corrosion scale formed in reclaimed water: Characteristics, model for scale growth and metal element release显示文摘Stainless steels generally have extremely good corrosion resistance, but are still susceptible to pitting corrosion. As a result, corrosion scales can form on the surface of stainless steel after extended exposure to aggressive aqueous environments. Corrosion scales play an important role in affecting water quality. These research results showed that interior regions of stainless steel corrosion scales have a high percentage of chromium phases. We reveal the morphology, micro-structure and physicochemical characteristics of stainless steel corrosion scales. Stainless steel corrosion scale is identified as a podiform chromite deposit according to these characteristics, which is unlike deposit formed during iron corrosion. A conceptual model to explain the formation and growth of stainless steel corrosion scale is proposed based on its composition and structure. The scale growth process involves pitting corrosion on the stainless steel surface and the consecutive generation and homogeneous deposition of corrosion products, which is governed by a series of chemical and electrochemical reactions. This model shows the role of corrosion scales in the mechanism of iron and chromium release from pitting corroded stainless steel materials. The formation of corrosion scale is strongly related to water quality parameters.The presence of HClO results in higher ferric content inside the scales. 20Isolation of a Pseudomonas Stutzeri strain that degrades 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and characterization of its degradative plasmid显示文摘The genetic information encoding metabolic pathways for xenobiotic compounds in bacteria often resides on catabolic plasmids.The aim of the present work was to know the location of the genes for degrading 1,2,4-trichlorobenzen.In this paper a 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene-degrading strain THSL-1 was isolated from the soil of Tianjin Chemical Plant using 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene as the sole carbon source.The strain was identified as Pseudomonas stutzeri through morphologic survey and 16S rDNA sequence determination.A plasmid was discovered from strain THSL-1 by using the alkali lysis method.When the plasmid was transformed into E.coli.JM109 by the CaCl2 method,the transformant could grow using 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene as the sole carbon source and had the degradation function of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene.Therefore,it could be deemed that the plasmid carried the degradative genes of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene.The average size of the plasmid was finally determined to be 40.2 Kb using selectively three kinds of restricted inscribed enzymes(HindIII,BamHI,and XholI)for single cutting and double cutting the plasmid pTHSL-1,respectively.Lei SONG Hui WANG Hanchang SHI Hongying HU 2008Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2008,2,1:3
