3Distal radius volar rim plate: Technical and radiographic considerations显示文摘AIM To determine technical considerations and radiographic outcomes of the Synthes volar rim distal radius plate to treat complex intra-articular fractures. METHODS This review highlights technical considerations learnt using this implant since it was introduced in a major trauma unit in November 2011, including anatomical reduction and whether this was maintained radiographically. RESULTS Twenty-six of the 382 internally fixed distal radial fractures at our unit(6.8%) were deemed to require this plate in order to achieve optimal fracture fixation between November 2011 and May 2014. A further dorsal and/or radial plate was necessary in 35% and variable angle screws were used in 54% of cases. Postoperatively, mean radial height, inclination, volar tilt and ulnar variance restored were 11.7 mm, 21o, 4.3o and-1.2 mm respectively. There were no cases of non-union or flexor/extensor tendon rupture; one case of loss of fracture reduction. Overall incidence of plate removal was 15% with one plate removed for flexor and one for extensor tendon irritation CONCLUSION The use of a rim plate enables control of challenging fardistal fracture patterns. However, additional plates were required to improve and maintain reduction. Variable angle screws were necessary in half the cases to avoid intra-articular screw penetration. 7The modern testicular prosthesis:patient selection and counseling,surgical technique,and outcomes显示文摘The testicular prosthesis can be an afterthought for providers when performing an orchiectomy for testicular cancer,torsion,atrophic testis,or trauma.However,data suggest that patients find the offer of a testicular prosthesis and counseling regarding placement to be extremely important from both a pragmatic and a psychosocial perspective.Only two-thirds of men undergoing orchiectomy are offered an implant at the time of orchiectomy and of those offered about one-third move forward with prosthesis placement.The relatively low acceptance rate is in stark contrast with high patient satisfaction and low complication rates for those who undergo the procedure.The most common postoperative patient concerns are minor and involve implant positioning,size,and weight.Herein,we provide an up-to-date review of modern preoperative evaluation,patient selection,expectation management,surgical technique,and expected outcomes for testicular prostheses.Solomon Hayon Jamie Michael R Matthew Coward 2020Asian Journal of Andrology2020,22,1:1

16Tailoring the degradation rate of magnesium through biomedical nano-porous titanate coatings显示文摘A novel approach was developed to reduce the corrosion rate of magnesium(Mg)metal,utilising titanate coatings.Magnetron sputtering was used to deposit ca.500 nm titanium(Ti)coatings onto pure Mg discs,followed by hydrothermal conversion and ion exchange reactions to produce sodium and calcium titanate coatings.SEM confirmed the characteristic nanoporous structure of sodium and calcium titanate,with thicknesses ranging from ca.0.8 to 1.4μm.XPS analysis confirmed the presence of Ti^(4+)-O,Na-O,and Ca-O bonding,whilst Raman spectroscopy demonstrated characteristic vibrational modes(such as TiO 6 octahedral vibrations)of the sodium and calcium titanate perovskite structure.Furthermore,corrosion studies through potentiodynamic polarisation measurements demonstrated the NB/NH CaTC samples to be superior in reducing Mg degradation,compared to other samples tested,through an increase in E_(corr)from-1.49 to-1.33 V,and the reduction in corrosion current density,i corr,from 0.31 to 0.06 mA/cm^(2)for Mg and NB/NH CaTC samples,respectively.There was a clear trend noted for the NB/NH samples,which showed an increase in E corr to more positive values in the following order:MgMatthew D.Wadge Jamie McGuire Benjamin V.T.Hanby Reda M.Felfel Ifty Ahmed David M.Grant 2021Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,1:0
