1Iliac vein compression syndrome: Clinical, imaging and pathologic findings显示文摘May-Thurner syndrome(MTS) is the pathologic compression of the left common iliac vein by the right common iliac artery, resulting in left lower extremity pain, swelling, and deep venous thrombosis. Though this syndrome was first described in 1851, there are currently no standardized criteria to establish the diagnosis of MTS. Since MTS is treated by a wide array of specialties, including interventional radiology, vascular surgery, cardiology, and vascular medicine, the need for an established diagnostic criterion is imperative in order to reduce misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Although MTS has historically been diagnosed by the presence of pathologic features, the use of dynamic imaging techniques has led to a more radiologic based diagnosis. Thus, imaging plays an integral part in screening patients for MTS, and the utility of a wide array of imaging modalities has been evaluated. Here, we summarize the historical aspects of the clinical features of this syndrome. We then provide a comprehensive assessment of the literature on the efficacy of imaging tools available to diagnose MTS. 2BH3-only proteins target BCL-xL/MCL-1,not BAX/BAK,to initiate apoptosis显示文摘It has been widely accepted that mitochondria-dependent apoptosis initiates when select BH3-only proteins(BID,BIM,etc.)directly engage and allosterically activate effector proteins BAX/BAK.Here,through reconstitution of cells lacking all eight pro-apoptotic BH3-only proteins,we demonstrate that all BH3-only proteins primarily target the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 proteins BCL-xL/MCL-1,whose simultaneous suppression enables membrane-mediated spontaneous activation of BAX/BAK.BH3-only proteins*apoptotic activities correlate with affinities for BCL-xL/MCL1 instead of abilities to directly activate BAX/BAK.Further,BID and BIM do not distinguish BAX from BAK or accelerate BAX/BAK activation following inactivation of BCL-xL/MCL-1.Remarkably,death ligandinduced apoptosis in cells lacking BH3-only proteins and MCL-1 is fully restored by BID mutants capable of neutralizing BCL-xL,but not direct activation of BAX/BAK.Taken together,our findings provide a'Membrane-mediated Permissive'model,in which the BH3-only proteins only indirectly activate BAX/BAK by neutralizing the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 proteins,and thus allowing BAX/BAK to undergo unimpeded,spontaneous activation in the mitochondrial outer membrane milieu,leading to apoptosis initiation.Kai Huang Katelyn L.O'Neill Jian Li Wei Zhou Na Han Xiaming Pang Wei Wu Lucas Struble Gloria Borgstahl Zhaorui Liu Liqiana Zhang Xu Luo 2019Cell Research2019,29,11:16
3Anterior knee pain following primary total knee arthroplasty显示文摘Despite improvements in technique and technology for total knee arthroplasty(TKA),anterior knee pain impacts patient outcomes and satisfaction.Addressing the prosthetic and surgical technique related causes of pain after TKA,specifically as it relates to anterior knee pain,can aid surgeons in addressing these issues with their patients.Design features of the femoral and patellar components which have been reported as pain generators include: Improper femoral as well as patellar component sizing or designs that result in patellofemoral stuffing; a shortened trochlear groove distance from the flange to the intercondylar box; and then surgical technique related issues resulting in: Lateral patellar facet syndrome; overstuffed patella/flange combination; asymmetric patellar resurfacing,improper transverse plane component rotation resulting in patellar subluxation/tilt.Any design consideration that allows impingement of extensor mechanism anatomical elements has the possibility of impacting outcome by becoming a pain generator.As the number of TKA procedures continues to increase,it is increasingly critical to develop improved,evidence based prostheses that maximize function and patient satisfaction while minimizing pain and other complications.David Shervin Katelyn Pratt Travis Healey Samantha Nguyen William M Mihalko Mouhanad M El-Othmani Khaled J Saleh 2015World Journal of Orthopedics2015,6,10:15

18Tunable rainbow light trapping in ultrathin resonator arrays显示文摘Rainbow light trapping in plasmonic devices allows for field enhancement of multiple wavelengths within a single device.However,many of these devices lack precise control over spatial and spectral enhancement profiles and cannot provide extremely high localised field strengths.Here we present a versatile,analytical design paradigm for rainbow trapping in nanogroove arrays by utilising both the groove-width and groove-length as tuning parameters.We couple this design technique with fabrication through multilayer thin-film deposition and focused ion beam milling,which enables the realisation of unprecedented feature sizes down to 5 nm and corresponding extreme normalised local field enhancements up to 103.We demonstrate rainbow trapping within the devices through hyperspectral microscopy and show agreement between the experimental results and simulation.The combination of expeditious design and precise fabrication underpins the implementation of these nanogroove arrays for manifold applications in sensing and nanoscale optics.Katelyn Dixon Arthur O.Montazeri Moein Shayegannia Edward S.Barnard Stefano Cabrini Naomi Matsuura Hoi-Ying Holman Nazir P.Kherani 2020Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1:1
19LC-MS/MS analysis of 2-aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid as a forensic biomarker for cyanide poisoning显示文摘AIM: To demonstrate the potential of using 2-aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid(ATCA) as a novel biomarker/forensic biomarker for cyanide poisoning. METHODS: A sensitive method was developed and employed for the identification and quantification of ATCA in biological samples, where the sample extraction and clean up were achieved by solid phase extraction(SPE). After optimization of SPE procedures, ATCA was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry. ATCA levels following the administration of different doses of potassium cyanide(KCN) to mice were measured and compared to endogenous ATCA levels in order to study the significance of using ATCA as a biomarker for cyanide poisoning.RESULTS: A custom made analytical method was established for a new(mice) model when animals were exposed to increasing KCN doses. The application of this method provided important new information on ATCA as a potential cyanide biomarker. ATCA concentration in mice plasma samples were increased from 189 ± 28 ng/mL(n = 3) to 413 ± 66 ng/mL(n = 3) following a 10 mg/kg body weight dose of KCN introduced subcutaneously. The sensitivity of this analytical method proved to be a tool for measuring endogenous level of ATCA in mice organs as follows: 1.2 ± 0.1 μg/g for kidney samples, 1.6 ± 0.1 μg/g for brain samples, 1.8 ± 0.2 μg/g for lung samples, 2.9 ± 0.1 μg/g for heart samples, and 3.6 ± 0.9 μg/g for liver samples.
