| 1 | Effect of wastewater COD/N ratio on aerobic nitrifying sludge granulation and microbial population shift显示文摘The effect of COD/N ratio on the granulation process and microbial population succession was investigated.Four identical sequencing batch reactors,R1,R2,R3 and R4,were operated with various initial COD/N ratios ranging from 0/200 to 800/200(m/m).Ethanol was fed as the source of COD.Aerobic granules were successfully cultivated in R2 and R3,operating with the COD/N ratio of 200/200 and 400/200,respectively.Scanning electron microscope observations indicated that short rod-shaped and spherical bacteria were dominant in R2,while granules produced in R3 were surrounded with a large amount of filamentous bacteria.The average specific nitritation rate in R2 and R3 were 0.019 and 0.008 mg N/(mg MLVSS.hr),respectively.Fluorescence in situ hybridization results demonstrated that nitrifying bacteria population was enriched remarkably in R2.It indicated that nitrification ability and nitrifying bacteria population were enriched remarkably at low COD/N ratio.However,no granules were formed in R1 and R4 which might attribute to either limited or excessive extracellular polymeric substances production.This study contributed to a better understanding of the role of COD/N ratio in nitrifying sludge granulation. | Lei Wu Chengyao Peng Yongzhen Peng Lingyun Li Shuying Wang Yong Ma | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,2: | 29 |
| 2 | Denitrifying phosphorus removal in a step-feed CAST with alternating anoxic-oxic operational strategy显示文摘A bench-scale cyclic activated sludge technology(CAST) was operated to study the biological phosphorus removal performance and a series of batch tests was carried out to demonstrate the accumulation of denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms(DNPAOs) in CAST system.Under all operating conditions,step-feed CAST with enough carbon sources in influent had the highest nitrogen and phosphorus removal effciency as well as good sludge settling performance.The average removal rate of COD,NH4+-N,PO43--P and total nitrogen(TN) was 88.2%,98.7%,97.5% and 92.1%,respectively.The average sludge volume index(SVI) was 133 mL/g.The optimum anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic(AOA) conditions for the cultivation of DNPAOs could be achieved by alternating anoxic/oxic operational strategy,thus a significant denitrifying phosphorus removal occurred in step-feed CAST.The denitrification of NOx--N completed quickly due to step-feed operation and enough carbon sources,which could enhance phosphorus release and further phosphorus uptake capability of the system.Batch tests also proved that polyphosphate-accumulating organisms(PAOs) in the step-feed process had strong denitrifying phosphorus removal capacity.Both nitrate and nitrite could be used as electron acceptors in denitrifying phosphorus removal.Low COD supply with step-feed operation strategy would favor DNPAOs accumulation. | MA Juan PENG Yongzhen WANG Shuying WANG Li LIU Yangt MA Ningpin | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,9: | 27 |
| 3 | Relationship between Cognition Function and Hippocampus Structure after Long-term Microwave Exposure显示文摘Objective To analyze the effects of long-term microwave exposure on hippocampal structure and function in the rat.Methods Experiments were performed on 184 male Wistar rats(three exposure groups and a sham group).Microwaves were applied daily for 6 min over 1 month at average power densities of 2.5,5,and 10 mW/cm2.Learning and memory abilities were assessed by Morris water maze.High performance liquid chromatography was used to detect neurotransmitter concentrations in the hippocampus.Hippocampal structures were observed by histopathological analysis.Results Following long-term microwave exposure there was a significant decrease in learning and memory activity in the 7 d,14 d,and 1 m in all three microwave exposure groups.Neurotransmitter concentrations of four amino acids(glutamate,aspartic acid,glycine,and gamma-aminobutyric acid) in hippocampus were increased in the 2.5 and 5 mW/cm2 groups and decreased in the 10 mW/cm2 group.There was evidence of neuronal degeneration and enlarged perivascular spaces in the hippocampus in the microwave exposure groups.Further,mitochondria became swollen and cristae were disordered.The rough endoplasmic reticulum exhibited sacculated distension and there was a decrease in the quantity of synaptic vesicles.Conclusion These data suggest that the hippocampus can be injured by long-term microwave exposure,which might result in impairment of cognitive function due to neurotransmitter disruption. | ZHAO Li PENG Rui Yun WANG Shui Ming WANG Li Feng GAO Ya Bing DONG Ji LI Xiang SU Zhen Tao | 2012 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2012,25,2: | 27 |
| 4 | Diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound and enhanced magnetic resonance for breast nodules显示文摘In the current study, we sought to evaluate the diagnostic efficacies of conventional ultrasound(US), contrastenhanced US(CEUS), combined US and CEUS and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) in detecting focal solid breast lesions. Totally 117 patients with 120 BI-RADS category 4A-5 breast lesions were evaluated by conventional US and CEUS, and MRI, respectively. SonoVue was used as contrast agent in CEUS and injected as an intravenous bolus; nodule scan was performed 4 minutes after bolus injection. A specific sonographic quantification software was used to obtain color-coded maps of perfusion parameters for the investigated lesion, namely the time-intensity curve.The pattern of contrast enhancement and related indexes regarding the time-intensity curve were used to describe the lesions, comparatively with pathological results. Histopathologic examination revealed 46 benign and 74 malignant lesions. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of US in detecting malignant breast lesions were 90.14%, 95.92%, and 92.52%, respectively. Meanwhile, CE-MRI showed sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 88.73%, 95.92%, and91.67%, respectively. The area under the ROC curve for combined US and CEUS in discriminating benign from malignant breast lesions was 0.936, while that of MRI was 0.923, with no significant difference between them, as well as among groups. The time-intensity curve of malignant hypervascular fibroadenoma and papillary lesions mostly showed a fast-in/fast-out pattern, with no good correlation between them(kappa <0.20). | 5 | Unscented extended Kalman filter for target tracking显示文摘A new method of unscented extended Kalman filter (UEKF) for nonlinear system is presented. This new method is a combination of the unscented transformation and the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The extended Kalman filter is similar to that in a conventional EKF. However, in every running step of the EKF the unscented transformation is running, the deterministic sample is caught by unscented transformation, then posterior mean of nonlinearity is caught by propagating, but the posterior covariance of nonlinearity is caught by linearizing. | 6 | Microwave Exposure Impairs Synaptic Plasticity in the Rat Hippocampus and PC12 Cells through Over-activation of the NMDA Receptor Signaling Pathway显示文摘Objective The aim of this study is to investigate whether microwave exposure would affect the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor(NMDAR) signaling pathway to establish whether this plays a role in synaptic plasticity impairment. Methods 48 male Wistar rats were exposed to 30 m W/cm2 microwave for 10 min every other day for three times. Hippocampal structure was observed through H&E staining and transmission electron microscope. PC12 cells were exposed to 30 m W/cm2 microwave for 5 min and the synapse morphology was visualized with scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The release of amino acid neurotransmitters and calcium influx were detected. The expressions of several key NMDAR signaling molecules were evaluated. Results Microwave exposure caused injury in rat hippocampal structure and PC12 cells, especially the structure and quantity of synapses. The ratio of glutamic acid and gamma-aminobutyric acid neurotransmitters was increased and the intracellular calcium level was elevated in PC12 cells. A significant change in NMDAR subunits(NR1, NR2 A, and NR2B) and related signaling molecules(Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase II gamma and phosphorylated c AMP-response element binding protein) were examined. Conclusion 30 m W/cm2 microwave exposure resulted in alterations of synaptic structure, amino acid neurotransmitter release and calcium influx. | 18 | Transdermal permeation of Zanthoxylum bungeanum essential oil on TCM components with different lipophilicity显示文摘Objective:To investigate the percutaneous penetration enhancement effect of essential oil from Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim.(Z.bungeanum oil)on active components in externally-applied traditional Chinese medicines.Methods:Five model drugs,geniposide,puerarin,ferulic acid,tetramethylpyrazine,and osthole,were chosen based on their lipophilicity and tested using in vitro transdermal permeation studies consisting of Franz diffusion cells and full thickness rat abdominal skin.Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the morphological changes of rat skin tissue after treatment with Z.bungeanum oil.The molecular interactions between the oil and the polar head groups in stratum corneum(SC)lipids were monitored using molecular dynamic simulation,and the SC/vehicle partition coefficients and saturation solubilities of the selected model drugs treated with and without the oil were also determined to ascertain its mechanisms of action.Results:As oil concentration increased,the log ERflow trended toward a negative linear relationship with the lipophilicity of drugs.After treatment with Z.bungeanum oil,a mild lifting up and wrinkle on the SC surface were observed,and appeared to become more pronounced as oil concentration increased.There was no significant difference between the control and the Z.bungeanum oil at different concentrations in terms of saturation solubility of GP,while saturation solubilities of the 4 other drugs gradually increased as oil concentration increased.The oxygen-containing constituents in Z.bungeanum oil,such as terpinen-4-ol and 1,8-cineole,which accounted for 57.95%of total oil,could form stable hydrogen bonds with the polar head group of ceramide 3.Conclusion:Z.bungeanum oil facilitated transdermal permeation of drugs with different lipophilicity,including the extremely hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs,whereas it exhibited greater enhancement activity for strongly hydrophilic drugs.The mechanisms of transdermal permeation enhancement by the oil could be explained with SC/vehicle partition coefficient,saturation solubility,and the interactions with SC lipids. | Yi Lan Jingyan Wang Shuwang He Shuying Li Peng Tan Hongmei Lin Qing Wu | 2016 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences2016,3,3: | 6 |
| 19 | Fabrication of mesoporous lignin-based biosorbent from rice straw and its application for heavy-metal-ion removal显示文摘Lignocellulosic biomass offers the most abundant renewable resource in replacing traditional fossil resources. However, it is still a major challenge to directly convert the lignin component into value-added materials. The availability of plentiful hydroxyl groups in lignin macromolecules and its unique three-dimensional structure make it an ideal precursor for mesoporous biosorbents. In this work, we reported an environmentally friendly and economically feasible method for the fabrication of mesoporous lignin-based biosorbent(MLBB) from lignocellulosic biomass through a SO_3micro-thermal-explosion process, as a byproduct of microcrystalline cellulose. BET analysis reveal the average pore-size distribution of 5.50 nm, the average pore value of 0.35 cm^3/g, and the specific surface area of 186 m^2/g. The physicochemical properties of MLBB were studied by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), attenuated-total-reflection fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and element analysis. These results showed that there are large amounts of sulfonic functional groups existing on the surface of this biosorbent. Pb(II) was used as a model heavy-metal-ion to demonstrate the technical feasibility for heavy-metal-ion removal.
