Pollutant toxicology with respect to microalgae and cyanobacteria显示文摘Microalgae and cyanobacteria are fundamental components of aquatic ecosystems.Pollution in aquatic environment is a worldwide problem.Toxicological research on microalgae and cyanobacteria can help to establish a solid foundation for aquatic ecotoxicological assessments.Algae and cyanobacteria occupy a large proportion of the biomass in aquatic environments;thus, their toxicological responses have been investigated extensively. However, the depth of toxic mechanisms and breadth of toxicological investigations need to be improved. While existing pollutants are being discharged into the environment daily, new ones are also being produced continuously. As a result, the phenomenon of water pollution has become unprecedentedly complex. In this review,we summarize the latest findings on five kinds of aquatic pollutants, namely, metals, nanomaterials, pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products(PPCPs),and persistent organic pollutants(POPs).Further,we present information on emerging pollutants such as graphene, microplastics, and ionic liquids.Efforts in studying the toxicological effects of pollutants on microalgae and cyanobacteria must be increased in order to better predict the potential risks posed by these materials to aquatic ecosystems as well as human health. | Tao Lu Qi Zhang Zhenyan Zhang Baolan Hu Jianmeng Chen Jun Chen Haifeng Qian | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,1: | 4
Alteration of dominant cyanobacteria in different bloom periods caused by abiotic factors and species interactions显示文摘Freshwater cyanobacterial blooms have drawn public attention because they threaten the safety of water resources and human health worldwide.Heavy cyanobacterial blooms outbreak in Lake Taihu in summer annually and vanish in other months. To find out the factors impacting the cyanobacterial blooms, the present study measured the physicochemical parameters of water and investigated the composition of microbial community using the 16S rRNA gene and internal transcribed spacer amplicon sequencing in the months with or without bloom. The most interesting finding is that two major cyanobacteria,Planktothrix and Microcystis, dramatically alternated during a cyanobacterial bloom in 2016,which is less mentioned in previous studies. When the temperature of the water began increasing in July,Planktothrix appeared first and showed as a superior competitor for M.aeruginosa in NO3^−-rich conditions.Microcystis became the dominant genus when the water temperature increased further in August.Laboratory experiments confirmed the influence of temperature and the total dissolved nitrogen(TDN)form on the growth of Planktothrix and Microcystis in a co-culture system.Besides, species interactions between cyanobacteria and non-cyanobacterial microorganisms, especially the prokaryotes, also played a key role in the alteration of Planktothrix and Microcystis. The present study exhibited the alteration of two dominant cyanobacteria in the different bloom periods caused by the temperature,TDN forms as well as the species interactions. These results helped the better understanding of cyanobacterial blooms and the factors which contribute to them. | Zhenyan Zhang Xiaoji Fan WJ.G.M.Peijnenburg Meng Zhang Liwei Sun Yujia Zhai Qi Yu Juan Wu Tao Lu Haifeng Qian | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,1: | 2
Effects of imazethapyr spraying on plant growth and leaf surface microbial communities in Arabidopsis thaliana显示文摘Imazethapyr (IM) is an acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicide that has been widely used in recent years. However,IM spraying can lead to the accumulation of herbicide residues in leaves. Here,we determined the effects of IM spraying on the plant growth and leaf surface microbial communities of Arabidopsis thaliana after 7 and 14 days of exposure. The results suggested that IM spraying inhibited plant growth.Fresh weight decreased to 48% and 26% of the control value after 7 and 14 days, respectively,of 0.035 kg/ha IM exposure. In addition, anthocyanin content increased 9.2-fold and 37.2-fold relative to the control content after 7 and 14 days of treatment, respectively.Furthermore,IM spraying destroyed the cell structures of the leaves,as evidenced by increases in the number of starch granules and the stomatal closure rate.Reductions in photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant enzyme activity were observed after IM spraying, especially after 14 days of exposure. The diversity and evenness of the leaf microbiota were not affected by IM treatment, but the composition of community structure at the genus level was altered by IM spraying.Imazethapyr application increased the abundance of Pseudomonas,a genus that includes species pathogenic to plants and humans, indicating that IM potentially increased the abundance of pathogenic bacteria on leaves. Our findings increase our understanding of the relationships between herbicide application and the microbial community structures on plant leaves, and they provide a new perspective for studying the ecological safety of herbicide usage. | Wanyue Liu Mingjing Ke Zhenyan Zhang Tao Lu Youchao Zhu Yan Li Xiangliang Pan Haifeng Qian | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,11: | 2

The mechanism of different cyanobacterial responses to glyphosate显示文摘Glyphosate, the most extensively used herbicide globally, has raised ecotoxicological concerns because it can be transported into the aquatic environment and cause adverse effects on the aquatic system. However, the functional mechanism of glyphosate on cyanobacteria are not completely disentangled. In this study, we selected six common cyanobacteria to evaluate glyphosate effects on cyanobacterial growth in monoculture experiment. Results showed that the growth of five tested cyanobacterial species were promoted under different degrees, and only Pseudanabaena was inhibited by glyphosate. In the phylogenetic tree based on gene sequences of 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase(EPSPS),a target for glyphosate, we found that the position of Pseudanabaena is the closest to plant, which was sensitive to glyphosate, thereby explaining the inhibitory effect of Pseudanabaena following glyphosate exposure. The primary degraded metabolites or analogs did not induce cyanobacterial growth, laterally demonstrating that glyphosate was used as a source of phosphorus to accelerate cyanobacterial growth because phosphorus levels increased in the medium of glyphosate treatment. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of the influence of glyphosate on the composition of aquatic microbiota and explains the mechanism of cyanobacterial response to glyphosate. | Wei Lin Zhenyan Zhang Yiling Chen Qi Zhang Mingjing Ke Tao Lu Haifeng Qian | 2023 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,3: | 0
Long-term case-fatality rate of nontuberculous mycobacterial disease in people living with HIV显示文摘Background:Few data are available regarding the long-term case-fatality rate(CFR)among people living with HIV(PLWH)with nontuberculous mycobacteria(NTM)disease. The aim of this study is to analyze the long-term CFR in patients with NTM disease and to identify risk factors for their death. Methods:A retrospective cohort study of 379 cases of microbiologically confirmed NTM disease in PLWH was conducted from January 1,2012,to December 31,2020,in Shanghai,China. We used Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the log-rank test to compare the long-term CFR in patients with disseminated NTM(DNTM)and localized NTM disease.Univariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and a stepwise Cox proportional hazards regression model were used to estimate the predictors of long-term CFR.Results:The cohort was followed up for a median of 26 months. The total CFR was 15.7%by one year and increased to 22.6%at 5 years after the diagnosis of NTM disease. The 5-year CFR of PLWH with DNTM was significantly higher than that of PLWH with localized NTM(26.7%vs 19.6%for DNTM and localized NTM disease, respectively).Older age[hazard ratio(HR)=1.04,95%confidence interval(CI):1.02-1.06,P<0.001],comorbidity(HR=2.05,95%CI:1.21-3.49,P<0.01),DNTM(HR=2.08,95%CI:1.17-3.68,P<0.05),and HIV viral load(HR=1.32,95%CI:1.12-1.55,P<0.001)were all independent risk factors for long-term CFR.In the subgroup analysis, time to culture positivity was negatively correlated with CFR in patients with DNTM(HR=0.90,95%CI:0.82-0.98,P<0.05).Conclusions:NTM was associated with a high long-term CFR in PLWH.Further approaches to prevent NTM disease in PLWH are urgently needed. | Jingjing Hu Ling Gu Yueming Shao Renfang Zhang Tangkai Qi Jianjun Sun Zhenyan Wang Wei Song Yang Tang Jiangrong Wang Shuibao Xu Junyang Yang Yinzhong Shen Li Liu Jun Chen Hongzhou Lu | 2022 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2022,11,1: | 0
Two-flavor quark matter in the perturbation theory with full thermodynamic consistency显示文摘Direct extrapolation of the strong interaction between quarks in pure perturbative calculation has a problem of thermodynamic inconsistency.A new term determined by thermodynamic consistency requirement could resolve it.This new term plays an important role at lower density in describing the equation of state of quark matter, while it is negligible at high density.Accordingly, the density behavior of the sound velocity becomes more reasonable, and the maximum mass of quark stars can be as large as two times the solar mass. | XU JianFeng PENG GuangXiong LU ZhenYan CUI ShuaiShuai | 2015 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2015,58,4: | 0
Assessment of residual chlorine in soil microbial community using metagenomics显示文摘Chlorine-containing disinfectants have been widely used around the world for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic. However,at present, little is known about the impact of residual chlorine on the soil micro-ecological environment.Herein,we treated an experimental soil-plant-microbiome microcosm system by continuous irrigation with a low concentration of chlorine-containing water, and then analyzed the influence on the soil microbial community using metagenomics. After 14-d continuous chlorine treatment, there were no significant lasting effect on soil microbial community diversity and composition either in the rhizosphere or in bulk soil.Although metabolic functions of the rhizosphere microbial community were affected slightly by continuous chlorine treatment,it recovered to the original status. The abundance of several resistance genes changed by 7 d and recovered by 14 d.According to our results, the chlorine residue resulting from daily disinfection may present a slight long-term effect on plant growth(shoot length and fresh weight)and soil micro-ecology.In general, our study assisted with environmental risk assessments relating to the application of chlorine-containing disinfectants and minimization of risks to the environment during disease control, such as COVID-19. | Yitian Yu Qi Zhang Zhenyan Zhang Nuohan Xu Yan Li Mingkang Jin Guoqiang Feng Haifeng Qian Tao Lu | 2023 | Soil Ecology Letters2023,5,1: | 0
Metabolomic modulations in a freshwater microbial community exposed to the fungicide azoxystrobin显示文摘An effective broad-spectrum fungicide, azoxystrobin(AZ),has been widely detected in aquatic ecosystems, potentially affecting the growth of aquatic microorganisms. In the present study, the eukaryotic alga Monoraphidium sp.and the cyanobacterium Pseudanabaena sp.were exposed to AZ for 7 days. Our results showed that 0.2–0.5 mg/L concentrations of AZ slightly inhibited the growth of Monoraphidium sp.but stimulated Pseudanabaena sp.growth.Meanwhile,AZ treatment effectively increased the secretion of total organic carbon(TOC)in the culture media of the two species, and this phenomenon was also found in a freshwater microcosm experiment(containing the natural microbial community). We attempted to assess the effect of AZ on the function of aquatic microbial communities through metabolomic analysis and further explore the potential risks of this compound. The metabonomic profiles of the microcosm indicated that the most varied metabolites after AZ treatment were related to the citrate cycle(TCA),fatty acid biosynthesis and purine metabolism. We thereby inferred that the microbial community increased extracellular secretions by adjusting metabolic pathways, which might be a stress response to reduce AZ toxicity. Our results provide an important theoretical basis for further study of fungicide stress responses in aquatic microcosm microbial communities,as well as a good start for further explorations of AZ detoxification mechanisms, which will be valuable for the evaluation of AZ environmental risk. | Mengwei Zhang Wanyue Liu Qian Qu Mingjing Ke Zhenyan Zhang Zhigao Zhou Tao Lu Haifeng Qian | 2020 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,11: | 0
Effects of Brown Fused Alumina and Bauxite on Microstructure and Properties of Zero-cement Al_2O_3-SiO_2 Castables显示文摘Using brown fused alumina and top grade bauxite as main starting materials, ultrafine alumina, silica fume, and pure calcium aluminate cement as bonding system, the effects of brown fused alumina and top grade bauxite additions on the properties and microstructure of zero-cement Al2O3-SiO2 castables after dried at 110 ℃ and fired at 1 250 ℃ for 3 h were studied. The microstructure was analyzed and discussed. The results show that the hot modulus of rupture of zero-cement Al2O3-SiO2 castables at 1 250 ℃ is up to 22.1 MPa when the bauxite addition is optimum at 12.5 wt%.The mullite formation mechanism in this castables is dissolution-precipitation mechanism and the hot modulus of rupture of the castables is closely related to in-situ mullite formation.Compared with brown fused alumina, the top grade bauxite is more helpful to in-situ mullite formation and improvement of hot modulus of rupture of the castables. | LI Zhigang ZHANG Zhenyan LU Zhichao SONG Wenping | 2011 | China's Refractories2011,20,1: | 0
Bacterial biogeography in China and its association to land use and soil organic carbon显示文摘●6102 high-quality sequencing results of soil bacterial samples were re-analyzed.●The type of land use was the principal driver of bacterial richness and diversity.●SOC content is positively correlated with key bacteria and total nitrogen content.Soil organic carbon(SOC)is the largest pool of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems and plays a crucial role in regulating atmospheric CO_(2) concentrations.Identifying the essential relationship between soil bacterial communities and SOC concentration is complicated because of many factors, one of which is geography. We systematically re-analyzed 6102 high-quality bacterial samples in China to delineate the bacterial biogeographic distribution of bacterial communities and identify key species associated with SOC concentration at the continental scale. The type of land use was the principal driver of bacterial richness and diversity, and we used machine learning to calculate its influence on microbial composition and their co-occurrence relationship with SOC concentration.Cultivated land was much more complex than forest, grassland, wetland and wasteland, with high SOC concentrations tending to enrich bacteria such as Rubrobacter,Terrimonas and Sphingomona.SOC concentration was positively correlated with the amounts of soil total nitrogen and key bacteria Xanthobacteraceae,Streptomyces and Acidobacteria but was negatively correlated with soil pH,total phosphorus and Micrococcaceae. Our study combined the SOC pool with bacteria and indicated that specific bacteria may be key factors affecting SOC concentration, forcing us to think about microbial communities associated with climate change in a new way. | Tao Lu Nuohan Xu Chaotang Lei Qi Zhang Zhenyan Zhang Liwei Sun Feng He Ning-Yi Zhou Josep Peñuelas Yong-Guan Zhu Haifeng Qian | 2023 | Soil Ecology Letters2023,5,4: | 0
Prevalence of familial hypercholesterolemia and its association with coronary artery disease:A Chinese cohort study显示文摘Background:Familial hypercholesterolemia(FH)is underrecognized, and its association with coronary artery disease(CAD)remains limited, especially in China. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of FH and its relationship with CAD in a large Chinese cohort. Methods:FH was defined using the Make Early Diagnosis to Prevent Early Death(MEDPED)criteria. The crude and age-sex standardized prevalence of FH were calculated based on surveys of the Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China(China-PAR)project during 2007−2008.The associations of FH with incident CAD and its major subtypes were estimated with the cohort-stratified multivariate Cox proportional hazard models based on the data from the baseline to the last follow-up(2018−2020).Results:Among 98,885 included participants,190 participants were defined as FH.Crude and age−sex standardized prevalence and 95%confidence interval(CI)of FH were 0.19%(0.17%-0.22%)and 0.13%(0.10%-0.16%),respectively.The prevalence varied across age groups and peaked in the group of 60-<70 years(0.28%),and the peak prevalence(0.18%)in males was earlier, yet lower than the peak crude prevalence in females(0.41%).During a mean follow-up of 10.7 years,2493 cases of incident CAD were identified. After multivariate adjustment,FH patients had a 2.03-fold greater risk of developing CAD compared to non-FH participants. Conclusions:The prevalence of FH was estimated to be 0.19%in the participants, and it was associated with an elevated risk of incident CAD.Our study suggests that early screening of FH has certain public health significance for the prevention of CAD. | Xiapikatijiang Aihaiti Shufeng Chen Jianxin Li Zhennan Lin Qingmei Cui Xue Xia Fangchao Liu Chong Shen Dongsheng Hu Keyong Huang Yingxin Zhao Fanghong Lu Xiaoqing Liu Jie Cao Ling Yu Ying Li Huan Zhang Zhenyan Fu Liancheng Zhao Jianfeng Huang Dongfeng Gu Xiangfeng Lu | 2023 | Chronic Diseases and Translational Medicine2023,9,2: | 0

Polydiacetylene-based poly-ion complex enabling aggregation-induced emission and photodynamic therapy dual turn-on for on-demand pathogenic bacteria elimination显示文摘Poly-ion complex(PIC)integrating non-antibiotic theranostics holds great promise in the combat against drug-resistant bacteria.Photosensitizers with aggregation-induced emission(AIE)characteristic are particularly intriguing theranostic agents, but incorporating them into antibacterial PIC to enable both fluorescence and reactive oxygen species(ROS)generation turn-on is deemed a great challenge. Here we report the development of a PIC that can dually boost the fluorescence and ROS generation in the presence of pathogen bacteria. The PIC is constructed based on an anionic polydiacetylene poly(deca-4,6-diynedioic acid)(PDDA),which completely degrades in the presence of ROS.A cationic polymer quaternized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)(PQDMA)that can disrupt bacterial membrane is co-loaded together with a highly efficient AIE photosensitizer TPCI in the PIC.PIC is nonfluorescent initially in that PDDA can quench the AIE of TPCI in PIC.When pathogenic bacteria are present, they can disturb the assembly of PIC to release TPCI,whose fluorescence turns on sensitively to indicate the existence of bacteria. The on-demand irradiation can be subsequently applied to excite TPCI,which generates ROS to degrade PDDA and deform the PIC.As a result,TPCI and PQDMA are completely released to eliminate bacteria through a synergy of turned-on photodynamic therapy(PDT)and membrane disruption. The highly efficient detection and inhibition against both Gramnegative and Gram-positive bacteria have validated this polydiacetylene-based PIC system as an effective non-antibiotic antibacterial theranostic platform as well as a new strategy to enable“turn-on”fluorescence sensing and imaging of AIE fluorophores. | Sidan Tian Yuan Lu Zhenyan He Qiang Yue Zhiyong Zhuang Yingzhou Wang Fanling Meng Liang Luo | 2022 | Science China Chemistry2022,65,9: | 0
