2C:N:P stoichiometry and nutrient limitation of the soil microbial biomass in a grazed grassland site under experimental P limitation or exces显示文摘Introduction:The availability of essential nutrients,such as nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P),can feedback on soil carbon(C)and the soil microbial biomass.Natural cycles can be supplemented by agricultural fertiliser addition,and we determined whether the stoichiometry and nutrient limitation of the microbial biomass could be affected by an unbalanced nutrient supply.Methods:Samples were taken from a long-term trial(in effect since 1968)with annual applications of 0,15 and 30 kg P ha^(−1) with constant N and potassium.Soil and microbial biomass CNP contents were measured and nutrient limitation assessed by substrate-induced respiration.Linear regression and discriminant analyses were used to identify the variables explaining nutrient limitation.Results:Soil and biomass CNP increased with increasing P fertiliser,and there was a significant,positive,correlation between microbial biomass P and biomass C,apart from at the highest level of P fertilisation when the microbial biomass was over-saturated with P.The molar ratios of C:N:P in the microbial biomass remained constant(homeostatic)despite large changes in the soil nutrient ratios.Microbial growth was generally limited by C and N,except in soil with no added P when C and P were the main limiting nutrients.C,N and P,however,did not explain all the growth limitation on the soils with no added P.Conclusions:Increased soil C and N were probably due to increased net primary production.Our results confirm that C:N:P ratios within the microbial biomass were constrained(i.e.homeostatic)under near optimum soil conditions.Soils with no added P were characterised by strong microbial P limitation and soils under high P by over-saturation of microorganisms with P.Relative changes in biomass C:P can be indicative of nutrient limitation within a site.Bryan S Griffiths Annette Spilles Michael Bonkowski 2012Ecological Processes2012,1,1:23
3Bioactive polymeric materials and electrical stimulation strategies for musculoskeletal tissue repair and regeneration显示文摘Electrical stimulation(ES)is predominantly used as a physical therapy modality to promote tissue healing and functional recovery.Research efforts in both laboratory and clinical settings have shown the beneficial effects of this technique for the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues,which include muscle,bone,skin,nerve,tendons,and ligaments.The collective findings of these studies suggest ES enhances cell proliferation,extracellular matrix(ECM)production,secretion of several cytokines,and vasculature development leading to better tissue regeneration in multiple tissues.However,there is still a gap in the clinical relevance for ES to better repair tissue interfaces,as ES applied clinically is ineffective on deeper tissue.The use of a conducting material can transmit the stimulation applied from skin electrodes to the desired tissue and lead to an increased function on the repair of that tissue.Ionically conductive(IC)polymeric scaffolds in conjunction with ES may provide solutions to utilize this approach effectively.Injectable IC formulations and their scaffolds may provide solutions for applying ES into difficult to reach tissue types to enable tissue repair and regeneration.A better understanding of ES-mediated cell differentiation and associated molecular mechanisms including the immune response will allow standardization of procedures applicable for the next generation of regenerative medicine.ES,along with the use of IC scaffolds is more than sufficient for use as a treatment option for single tissue healing and may fulfill a role in interfacing multiple tissue types during the repair process.Bryan Ferrigno Rosalie Bordett Nithyadevi Duraisamy Joshua Moskow Michael R.Arul Swetha Rudraiah Syam P.Nukavarapu Anthony T.Vella Sangamesh G.Kumbar 2020Bioactive Materials2020,5,3:8
4Screening pre-bariatric surgery patients for esophageal disease with esophageal capsule endoscopy显示文摘AIM:To determine if esophageal capsule endoscopy(ECE)is an adequate diagnostic alternative to esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD)in pre-bariatric surgery patients.METHODS:We conducted a prospective pilot study to assess the diagnostic accuracy of ECE(PillCam ESO2,Given Imaging)vs conventional EGD in pre-bariatric surgery patients.Patients who were scheduled for bariatric surgery and referred for pre-operative EGD were prospectively enrolled.All patients underwent ECE followed by standard EGD.Two experienced gastroenterologists blinded to the patient’s history and the findings of the EGD reviewed the ECE and documented their findings.The gold standard was the findings on EGD.RESULTS:Ten patients with an average body mass index of 50 kg/m2were enrolled and completed the study.ECE identified 11 of 14(79%)positive esophageal/gastroesophageal junction(GEJ)findings and 14of 17(82%)combined esophageal and gastric findings identified on EGD.Fisher’s exact test was used to compare the findings and no significant difference was found between ECE and EGD(P=0.64 for esophageal/GEJ and P=0.66 for combined esophageal and gastric findings respectively).Of the positive esophageal/GEJ findings,ECE failed to identify the following:hiatal hernia in two patients,mild esophagitis in two patients,and mild Schatzki ring in two patients.ECE was able to identify the entire esophagus in 100%,gastric cardia in0%,gastric body in 100%,gastric antrum in 70%,pylorus in 60%,and duodenum in 0%.CONCLUSION:There were no significant differences in the likelihood of identifying a positive finding using ECE compared with EGD in preoperative evaluation of bariatric patients.Ashish Shah Erica Boettcher Marianne Fahmy Thomas Savides Santiago Horgan Garth R Jacobsen Bryan J Sandler Michael Sedrak Denise Kalmaz 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,37:7

9Outcomes after arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears in the setting of mild to moderate glenohumeral osteoarthritis显示文摘BACKGROUND Rotator cuff pathology is a very common source of shoulder pain.Similarly,osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint can cause shoulder pain and produce similar symptoms.Surgical management can be indicated for both pathologies,however,outcomes data is limited when examining rotator cuff repair(RCR) in the setting of glenohumeral arthritis(GHOA).Thus,this study sought to determine outcomes for patients who undergo RCR in the setting of GHOA.AIM To evaluate if a relationship exists between outcomes of RCR in the setting of GHOA.METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with concurrent glenohumeral osteoarthritis between 2010-2017.Patients were stratified based on rotator cuff tear size and glenohumeral osteoarthritis severity.Cohorts were paired 1:1 with patients without glenohumeral osteoarthritis.Patients included had a minimum two year follow-up.Rate of conversion to total shoulder arthroplasty,complication rates following initial surgery,and patient-reported outcome measures were collected.RESULTS A total of 142 patients were included.The number of patients that required total shoulder arthroplasty within two years after index surgery was low.2/71(2.8%) patients with GHOA,and 1/71(1.4%) without GHOA.Following rotator cuff repair,both groups showed favorable patientreported outcomes.CONCLUSION Patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair showed comparable outcomes to patients without glenohumeral osteoarthritis.Ian S Hong Allison J Rao Tyler L CarlLee Joshua D Meade Daniel J Hurwit Gregory Scarola David P Trofa Shadley C Schiffern Nady Hamid Patrick M Connor James E Fleischli Bryan Michael Saltzman 2022World Journal of Orthopedics2022,13,7:2

12Atomic force microscopy correlates antimetastatic potentials of HepG2 cell line with its redox/energy status: effects of curcumin and Khaya senegalensis显示文摘OBJECTIVE: The fatality of cancer is mostly dependent on the possibility of occurrence of metastasis. Thus, if the development of metastasis can be prevented through novel therapeutic strategies targeted against this process, then the success of cancer treatment will drastically increase. In this study, therefore, we evaluated the antimetastatic potentials of an extract of Khaya senegalensis and curcumin on the metastatic liver cell line HepG2, and also assessed the anticancer property of the extract.METHODS: Cells were cultured and treated with graded concentrations of test substances for 24, 48, or 72 h with provisions made for negative controls. Treated cells were assessed as follows: nanotechnologically—atomic force microscopy(AFM) was used to determine cell stiffness; biochemically—cell cytotoxicity, glutathione level and adenosine triphosphate status, caspase activation and mitochondrial toxicity were considered; and microbiologically—a carrot disk assay was used to assess the anticancer property of the extract of K. senegalensis.RESULTS: Curcumin and K. senegalensis increased the cell stiffness by 2.6-and 4.0-fold respectively, indicating their antimetastatic effects. Corresponding changes in redox(glutathione level) and energy(adenosine triphosphate) status of the cells were also demonstrated. Further mechanistic studies indicated that curcumin was not mitotoxic in HepG2 cells unlike the K. senegalensis extract. In addition, the extract potently inhibited the Agrobacterium tumefaciens-induced genetic transformation based on carrot disk assay.CONCLUSION: Cell elasticity measurement data, using AFM, strongly suggested, for the first time, that both curcumin and the extract of K. senegalensis exhibited antimetastatic properties on HepG2 cells.Jeremiah Olorunjuwon Olugbami Robert Damoiseaux Bryan France Michael A. 14Optical information processing using dual state quantum dot lasers: complexity through simplicity显示文摘We review results on the optical injection of dual state InAs quantum dot-based semiconductor lasers.The two states in question are the so-called ground state and first excited state of the laser.This ability to lase from two different energy states is unique amongst semiconductor lasers and in combination with the high,intrinsic relaxation oscillation damping of the material and the novel,inherent cascade like carrier relaxation process,endows optically injected dual state quantum dot lasers with many unique dynamical properties.Particular attention is paid to fast state switching,antiphase excitability,novel information processing techniques and optothermally induced neuronal phenomena.We compare and contrast some of the physical properties of the system with other optically injected two state devices such as vertical cavity surface emitting lasers and ring lasers.Finally,we offer an outlook on the use of quantum dot material in photonic integrated circuits.Bryan Kelleher Michael Dillane Evgeny A.Viktorov 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,12:2
