| 1 | Traditional Chinese medicine as supportive care for the management of liver cancer: Past, present, and future显示文摘Liver cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide.Western medicine and therapies are the primary treatment strategies of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),but the general prognosis for HCC patients is still dismal.Under these circumstances,HCC prevention is particularly important.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)encompasses a wealth of documented therapeutic resources,and“preventative treatment”is the principle of TCM.In China,TCM has been used for HCC prevention for thousands of years,and has also been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of HCC in modern China.However,the TCM theory for prevention and treatment of HCC is more widely accepted in China than abroad.In this review,we first summarize the herbs and ancient formulas with therapeutic effects on HCC.We also review the research status of TCM in modern medicine as well as the current obstacles in its development.Finally,we discuss the future of TCM in the context of precision and integrated medicine.After reviewing the literature,we believe that TCM,through ancient development,is an advanced method of cancer treatment with positive curative effects,despite its surrounding controversy.Furthermore,precise analyses and systematic research methods provides novel approaches to modernize TCM for the future. | Xia Liao Yang Bu Qingan Jia | 2020 | Genes & Diseases2020,7,3: | 11 |
| 2 | Primary structure of helix C to helix G of a new retinal protein in H.sp.xz515显示文摘The gene fragment encoding the retinal protein from helix C to helix G in a new strain of halobacteria, H.sp.xz515 has been amplified by PCR method. The nucleotide sequence of this fragment has been determined. The deduced amino acid sequence has been compared with halobium br and other two br-like proteins, ar-1 and ar-2. Results show that those amino acid residues in br, essential for proton pumping and binding to retinal, are conserved. | 3 | Staged angioplasty versus regular carotid artery stenting in patients with carotid artery stenosis at high risk of hyperperfusion:a randomised clinical trial显示文摘Background and purpose Hyperperfusion(HP)is a devastating complication associated with carotid artery stenting(CAS)or endarterectomy.The efficacy and safety of staged angioplasty(SAP)in patients with CAS at high risk of HP remains unclear.We sought to determine whether SAP is superior to regular CAS in patients with high risk of HP.Methods A randomised,multicentre open-label clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment(STEP)was conducted.Patients with severe carotid stenosis at high risk of HP were randomly assigned(1:1)to the SAP or regular CAS group.The primary endpoint was hyperperfusion syndrome(HPS)and intracerebral haemorrhage(ICH)within 30 days after the procedure.Results From November 2014 to January 2017,a total of 64 patients were enrolled in 11 centres.33 patients were allocated to the SAP group and 31 to the regular CAS group.At 30 days,the rate of primary endpoint was 0.0%(0/33)in the SAP group and 9.7%(3/31)in the regular CAS group(absolute risk reduction(ARR),9.7%;95%CI−20.1% to 0.7%;p=0.11).As one of the secondary endpoints,the incidence of HP phenomenon(HPP)was lower in the SAP group than the regular CAS group(0.0%vs 22.6%,ARR,−22.6%;95% CI−36.8%to−10.2%;p=0.04).Conclusion The rate of HPS and ICH was not significantly lower in SAP group;the extended secondary endpoint of HPP,however,significantly reduced,which suggested that SAP may be a safe and effective carotid revascularisation procedure to prevent HP. | Dapeng Mo Baixue Jia Huaizhang Shi Yaxuan Sun Qingan Liu Chengzhe Fan Jianping Deng Jinglin Yuan Wei Wu Changchun Jiang Guilian Zhang Hanjun Du Ning Ma Feng Gao Xuan Sun Ligang Song Lian Liu Guangge Peng Yongjun Wang Yilong Wang Zhongrong Miao the STEP Study Group | 2021 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2021,6,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Study on pulsed laser ablation and deposition of ZnO thin films by L-MBE显示文摘ZnO,as a wide-band gap semiconductor,has recently become a new research fo-cus in the field of ultraviolet optoelectronic semiconductors. Laser molecular beam epitaxy(L-MBE) is quite useful for the unit cell layer-by-layer epitaxial growth of zinc oxide thin films from the sintered ceramic target. The ZnO ceramic target with high purity was ablated by KrF laser pulses in an ultra high vacuum to deposit ZnO thin film during the process of L-MBE. It is found that the deposition rate of ZnO thin film by L-MBE is much lower than that by conventional pulsed laser deposition(PLD) . Based on the experimental phenomena in the ZnO thin film growth process and the thermal-controlling mechanism of the nanosecond(ns) pulsed laser abla-tion of ZnO ceramic target,the suggested effective ablating time during the pulse duration can explain the very low deposition rate of the ZnO film by L-MBE. The unique dynamic mechanism for growing ZnO thin film is analyzed. | 5 | Pancreatic cancer serum biomarker PC-594:Diagnostic performance and comparison to CA19-9显示文摘AIM:To investigate serum PC-594 fatty acid levels as a potential biomarker in North American pancreatic cancer(PaC) patients,and to compare its performance to CA19-9.METHODS:Using tandem mass spectrometry,we evaluated serum PC-594 levels from 84 North American patients with confirmed PaC and 99 cancer-free control subjects.We determined CA19-9 levels by ELISA.Significance between Pa C patients and controls,and association with clinical variables was determined by analysis of variance and t-tests.Diagnostic performance was evaluated by receiver-operator characteristic(ROC)curve analysis,and PC-594 correlation with age and CA19-9 determined by regression analysis.RESULTS:Mean PC-594 levels were 3.7 times lower in Pa C patients compared to controls(P < 0.0001).The mean level in PaC patient serum was 0.76 ± 0.07 μmol/L,and the mean level in control subjects was 2.79 ± 0.15 μmol/L.There was no correlation between PC-594 and age,disease stage or gender(P > 0.05).Using 1.25 μmol/L as a PC-594 threshold produced a relative risk(RR) of 9.4(P < 0.0001,95%CI:5.0-17.7).The area under the receiver-operator characteristic curve(ROCAUC) was 0.93(95%CI:0.91-0.95) for PC-594 and 0.85(95%CI:0.82-0.88) for CA19-9.Sensitivity at 90% specificity was 87% for PC-594 and 71% for CA19-9.Six Pa C patients with CA19-9 above 35 U/m L showed normal PC-594 levels,while 24 Pa C patients with normal CA19-9 showed low PC-594 levels.Eighty-five of the 99 control subjects(86%) showed normal levels of both markers.CONCLUSION:PC-594 biomarker levels are significantly reduced in North American Pa C patients,and showed superior diagnostic performance compared to CA19-9. | Shawn A Ritchie Bassirou Chitou Qingan Zheng Dushmanthi Jayasinghe Wei Jin Asuka Mochizuki Dayan B Goodenowe | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,21: | 3 |

| 10 | Probing the catalytic activity of M-N_(4−x)O_(x) embedded graphene for the oxygen reduction reaction by density functional theory显示文摘In this work,the detailed oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)catalytic performance of M-N_(4−x)O_(x)(M=Fe,Co,and Ni;x=1−4)has been explored via the detailed density functional theory method.The results suggest that the formation energy of M-N_(4−x)O_(x)shows a good linear relationship with the number of doped O atoms.The adsorption manner of O_(2)on M-N_(4−x)O_(x)changed from end-on(x=1 and 2)to side-on(x=3 and 4),and the adsorption strength gradually increased.Based on the results for binding strength of ORR intermediates and the Gibbs free energy of ORR steps on the studied catalysts,we screened out two highly active ORR catalysts,namely Co-N_(3)O_(1)and Ni-N_(2)O_(2),which possess very small overpotentials of 0.27 and 0.32 V,respectively.Such activities are higher than the precious Pt catalyst.Electronic structure analysis reveals one of the reasons for the higher activity of Co-N_(3)O_(1)and Ni-N_(2)O_(2)is that they have small energy gaps and moderate highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels.Furthermore,the results of the density of states reveal that the O doping can improve the electronic structure of the original catalyst to tune the adsorption of the ORR intermediates. | Fan Ge Qingan Qiao Xin Chen You Wu | 2021 | Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering2021,15,5: | 1 |
