| 1 | Rheumatoid arthritis: Nuclear medicine state-of-the-art imaging显示文摘Rheumatoid arthritis(RA)is an autoimmune disease,which is associated with systemic and chronic inflammation of the joints,resulting in synovitis and pannus formation.For several decades,the assessment of RA has been limited to conventional radiography,assisting in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease.Nevertheless,conventional radiography has poor sensitivity in the detection of the inflammatory process that happens in the initial stages of RA.In the past years,new drugs that significantly decrease the progression of RA have allowed a more efficient treatment.Nuclear Medicine provides functional assessment of physiological processes and therefore has significant potential for timely diagnosis and adequate follow-up of RA.Several single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT)and positron emission tomography(PET)radiopharmaceuti-cals have been developed and applied in this field.The use of hybrid imaging,which permits computed tomography(CT)and nuclear medicine data to be acquired and fused,has increased even more the diagnostic accuracy of Nuclear Medicine by providing anatomical localization in SPECT/CT and PET/CT studies.More recently,fusion of PET with magnetic resonance imaging(PET/MRI)was introduced in some centers and demonstrated great potential.In this article,we will review studies that have been published using Nuclear Medicine for RA and examine key topics in the area. | Paulo Henrique Rosado-de-Castro Sergio Augusto Lopes de Souza Dangelo Alexandre Lea Mirian Barbosa da Fonseca Bianca Gutfilen | 2014 | World Journal of Orthopedics2014,5,3: | 3 |

| 13 | Burden and factors associated with schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections among school-age children in Huambo,Uige and Zaire provinces,Angola显示文摘Background:Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths(STHs)contribute high disease burdens amongst the neglected tropical diseases(NTDs)and are public health problems in Angola.This study reports the prevalence,intensity and risk factors for schistosomiasis and STH infection in Huambo,Uige and Zaire provinces,Angola,to inform a school-based preventive chemotherapy program.Methods:A two-stage cluster design was used to select schools and schoolchildren to participate in parasitological and water,sanitation and hygiene(WASH)surveys across Huambo,Uige,and Zaire provinces.Point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen and urinalysis rapid diagnostic tests(RDTs)were used to determine the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni and S.haematobium,respectively.Kato-Katz was used to identify and quantify STH species and quantify and compare with RDTs for S.mansoni.Urine filtration was used to quantify and compare with RDTs for S.haematobium.Descriptive statistics were used for prevalence and infection intensity of schistosomiasis and STH infection.Performance of RDTs was assessed through specificity and Cohen’s Kappa agreement with microscopy.A multivariate regression analysis was used to determine demographic and WASH factors associated with schistosomiasis and STH infection.Results:A total 575 schools and 17,093 schoolchildren participated in the schistosomiasis survey,of which 121 schools and 3649 schoolchildren participated in the STH survey.Overall prevalence of S.mansoni was 21.2%(municipality range 0.9–74.8%)and S.haematobium 13.6%(range 0–31.2%),with an overall prevalence of schistosomiasis of 31.4%(range 5.9–77.3%).Overall prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides was 25.1%(range 0–89.7%),hookworm 5.2%(range 0–42.6%),and Trichuris trichiura 3.6%(range 0–24.2%),with an overall prevalence of STH infection of 29.5%(range 0.8–89.7%).Ecological zone and ethnicity were factors associated with schistosomiasis and STH infection,with older age and female sex additional risk factors for S.haematobium.Conclusions:Most municipalities met World Health Organization defined prevalence thresholds for a schistosomiasis preventive chemotherapy program.A STH preventive chemotherapy program is indicated for nearly all municipalities in Uige and select municipalities in Huambo and Zaire.The association between ecological zone and ethnicity with schistosomiasis and STH infection necessitates further evaluation of home and school environmental,sociodemographic and behavioural factors to inform targeted control strategies to complement preventive chemotherapy programs. | Adam W.Bartlett Jose C.Sousa-Figueiredo Roelofje Cvan Goor Paul Monaghan Warren Lancaster Rukaaka Mugizi Elsa P.Mendes Susana Vaz Nery Sergio Lopes | 2022 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2022,11,3: | 0 |
| 14 | Exploring the adjustment to parasite pressure hypothesis: differences in uropygial gland volume and haemosporidian infection in palearctic and neotropical birds显示文摘Parasites are globally widespread pathogenic organisms,which impose im portant selective forces upon their hosts.Thus,in accordance with the A djustm ent to parasite pressure hypothesis,it is expected that defenses among hosts vary relative to the selective pressure imposed by parasites.According to the latitudinal gradient in diversity,species richness and abundance of parasites peak near the equator.The uropygial gland is an im portant defensive exocrine gland against pathogens in birds.Size of the uropygial gland has been proposed to vary among species of birds because of divergent selection by pathogens on their hosts.Therefore,we should expect that bird species from the tropics should have relatively larger uropygial glands for their body size than species from higher latitudes.However,this hypothesis has not yet been explored.Here,we analyze the size of the uropygial gland of 1719 individual birds belonging to 36 bird species from 3 Neotropical(Peru)and 3 temperate areas(Spain).Relative uropygial gland volum e was 12.52%larger in bird species from the tropics than from temperate areas.This finding is consistent w ith the relative size of this defensive organ being driven by selective pressures imposed by parasites.We also explored the potential role of this gland as a means of avoiding haemosporidian infection,showing that species with large uropygial glands for their body size tend to have lower mean prevalence of haemosporidian infection,regardless o f their geographical origin.This result provides additional support for the assum ption that secretions from the uropygial gland reduce the likelihood of becoming infected with haemosporidians. | Sergio MAGALLANES Anders Pape MøLLER Charlene LUJÁN-VEGA Esteban FONG Daniel VECCO Wendy FLORES-SAAVEDRA Luz GARCÍA-LONGORIAA Florentino DE LOPE JoséA.IANNACONE Alfonso MARZAL | 2021 | Current Zoology2021,67,2: | 0 |
