| 1 | Cancer statistics in China and United States,2022:profiles,trends,and determinants显示文摘Background:The cancer burden in the United States of America(USA)has decreased gradually.However,China is experiencing a transition in its cancer profiles,with greater incidence of cancers that were previously more common in the USA.This study compared the latest cancer profiles,trends,and determinants between China and USA.Methods:This was a comparative study using open-source data.Cancer cases and deaths in 2022 were calculated using cancer estimates from GLOBOCAN 2020 and population estimates from the United Nations.Trends in cancer incidence and mortality rates in the USA used data from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results program and National Center for Health Statistics.Chinese data were obtained from cancer registry reports.Data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 and a decomposition method were used to express cancer deaths as the product of four determinant factors.Results:In 2022,there will be approximately 4,820,000 and 2,370,000 new cancer cases,and 3,210,000 and 640,000 cancer deaths in China and the USA,respectively.The most common cancers are lung cancer in China and breast cancer in the USA,and lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both.Age-standardized incidence and mortality rates for lung cancer and colorectal cancer in the USA have decreased significantly recently,but rates of liver cancer have increased slightly.Rates of stomach,liver,and esophageal cancer decreased gradually in China,but rates have increased for colorectal cancer in the whole population,prostate cancer in men,and other seven cancer types in women.Increases in adult population size and population aging were major determinants for incremental cancer deaths,and case-fatality rates contributed to reduced cancer deaths in both countries.Conclusions:The decreasing cancer burden in liver,stomach,and esophagus,and increasing burden in lung,colorectum,breast,and prostate,mean that cancer profiles in China and the USA are converging.Population aging is a growing determinant of incremental cancer burden.Progress in cancer prevention and care in the USA,and measures to actively respond to population aging,may help China to reduce the cancer burden. | Changfa Xia Xuesi Dong He Li Maomao Cao Dianqin Sun Siyi He Fan Yang Xinxin Yan Shaoli Zhang Ni Li Wanqing Chen | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,,5: | 827 |
| 2 | Influence of soil type and genotype on Cd bioavailability and uptake by rice and implications for food safety显示文摘Cadmium(Cd) entering the human body via the food chain is of increasing concern.This study investigates the effects of soil type and genotype on variations in the Cd concentrations of different organs of nine rice plants grown on two types of soils with two Cd levels.Cd concentrations in nine rice cultivars varied significantly with genotype and soil type(P < 0.01).The Cd concentration was higher in red paddy soil(RP) than in yellow clayey paddy soil(YP).The average Cd concentrations of different organs in three rice types were indica > hybrid > japonica for the Cd treatments and controls.The polished grain concentration in YP and RP soils had a range of 0.055-0.23 mg/kg and 0.13-0.36 mg/kg in the Cd treatment,respectively.Two rice cultivars in YP soil and five rice cultivars in RP soil exceeded the concentration limits in the Chinese Food Hygiene Standard(0.2 mg/kg).The Cd concentrations in roots,stems,and leaves were all significantly and positively correlated to that in polished grain in a single test.The Cd concentrations in polished grain were positively and significantly(P < 0.01) correlated with the calculated transfer factors of stem to grain and leaf to grain Cd transfer.The results indicated that the variations of Cd concentration in grain were related to Cd uptake and the remobilization of Cd from stem and leaf to grain.Also,the cultivars with a strong tendency for Cd-accumulation should be avoided in paddy soil with low soil pH and low organic matter content to reduce the risks to human health from high Cd levels in rice. | Xinxin Ye Yibing Ma Bo Sun | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,9: | 34 |
| 3 | Current cancer burden in China: epidemiology, etiology, and prevention显示文摘Cancer has become the most common cause of death in China.Owing to rapid economic development,improved livelihood,and shifts in risk factors,cancer epidemiology has experienced substantial changes during the past several decades.In this review,we aim to describe the current cancer epidemiology of the main types of cancer in China,report major risk factors associated with cancer development,and summarize the contributions of the Chinese government to controlling the cancer burden.A total of 4,064,000 new cases were diagnosed in China in 2016.The most frequent types are lung cancer(828,100;20.4%),colorectal cancer(408,000;10.0%),and gastric cancer(396,500;9.8%).Lung(657,000;27.2%),liver(336,400,13.9%),and stomach(288,500;12.0%)cancers are the 3 most deadly cancers in the general population.The 5-year survival rate for cancer has dramatically increased in recent decades.However,liver and particularly pancreatic cancers still have the poorest prognosis.The main modifiable risk factors associated with cancer development include infectious agents,smoking,alcohol consumption,obesity,unhealthful dietary habits,and inadequate physical activity.The Chinese government has made unremitting efforts to decrease the cancer burden,including cancer education and investment in cancer screening programs. | Maomao Cao He Li Dianqin Sun Siyi He Xinxin Yan Fan Yang Shaoli Zhang Changfa Xia Lin Lei Ji Peng Wanqing Chen | 2022 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2022,19,8: | 33 |

| 5 | Ferroptosis is essential for diabetic cardiomyopathy and is prevented by sulforaphane via AMPK/NRF2 pathways显示文摘Herein,we define the role of ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy(DCM)by examining the expression of key regulators of ferroptosis in mice with DCM and a new ex vivo DCM model.Advanced glycation end-products(AGEs),an important pathogenic factor of DCM,were found to induce ferroptosis in engineered cardiac tissues(ECTs),as reflected through increased levels of Ptgs2 and lipid peroxides and decreased ferritin and SLC7 A11 levels.Typical morphological changes of ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes were observed using transmission electron microscopy.Inhibition of ferroptosis with ferrostatin-1 and deferoxamine prevented AGE-induced ECT remodeling and dysfunction.Ferroptosis was also evidenced in the heart of type 2 diabetic mice with DCM.Inhibition of ferroptosis by liproxstatin-1 prevented the development of diastolic dysfunction at 3 months after the onset of diabetes.Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(NRF2)activated by sulforaphane inhibited cardiac cell ferroptosis in both AGE-treated ECTs and hearts of DCM mice by upregulating ferritin and SLC7 A11 levels.The protective effect of sulforaphane on ferroptosis was AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK)-dependent.These findings suggest that ferroptosis plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of DCM;sulforaphane prevents ferroptosis and associated pathogenesis via AMPK-mediated NRF2 activation.This suggests a feasible therapeutic approach with sulforaphane to clinically prevent ferroptosis and DCM. | Xiang Wang Xinxin Chen Wenqian Zhou Hongbo Men Terigen Bao Yike Sun Quanwei Wang Yi Tan Bradley B.Keller Qian Tong Yang Zheng Lu Cai | 2022 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2022,12,2: | 20 |

| 9 | The chromosome-level Hemerocallis citrina Borani genome provides new insights into the rutin biosynthesis and the lack of colchicine显示文摘Hemerocallis citrina Borani(huang hua cai in Chinese)is an important horticultural crop whose flower buds are widely consumed as a delicious vegetable in Asia.Here we assembled a high-quality reference genome of H.citrina using single-molecule sequencing and Hi-C technologies.The genome assembly was 3.77 Gb and consisted of 3183 contigs with a contig N50 of 2.09 Mb,which were further clustered into 11 pseudochromosomes.A larger portion(3.25 Gb or 86.20%)was annotated as a repetitive content and 54,295 protein-coding genes were annotated in the genome.Genome evolution analysis showed that H.citrina experienced a recent whole-genome duplication(WGD)event at~15.73 million years ago(Mya),which was the main factor leading to many multiple copies of orthologous genes.We used this reference genome to predict 20 genes involved in the rutin biosynthesis pathway.Moreover,our metabolomics data revealed neither colchicine nor its precursors in H.citrina,challenging the long-standing belief that this alkaloid causes poisoning by the plant.The results of our disruptive research are further substantiated by our genomic finding that H.citrina does not contain any genes involved in colchicine biosynthesis.The high-quality genome lays a solid foundation for genetic research and molecular breeding of H.citrina. | Zhixing Qing Jinghong Liu Xinxin Yi Xiubin Liu Guoan Hu Jia Lao Wei He Zihui Yang Xiaoyan Zou Mengshan Sun Peng Huang Jianguo Zeng | 2021 | Horticulture Research2021,8,1: | 6 |

| 12 | Influence of the NAO on Wintertime Surface Air Temperature over East Asia:Multidecadal Variability and Decadal Prediction显示文摘In this paper,we investigate the influence of the winter NAO on the multidecadal variability of winter East Asian surface air temperature(EASAT)and EASAT decadal prediction.The observational analysis shows that the winter EASAT and East Asian minimum SAT(EAmSAT)display strong in-phase fluctuations and a significant 60-80-year multidecadal variability,apart from a long-term warming trend.The winter EASAT experienced a decreasing trend in the last two decades,which is consistent with the occurrence of extremely cold events in East Asia winters in recent years.The winter NAO leads the detrended winter EASAT by 12-18 years with the greatest significant positive correlation at the lead time of 15 years.Further analysis shows that ENSO may affect winter EASAT interannual variability,but does not affect the robust lead relationship between the winter NAO and EASAT.We present the coupled oceanic-atmospheric bridge(COAB)mechanism of the NAO influences on winter EASAT multidecadal variability through its accumulated delayed effect of~15 years on the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO)and Africa-Asia multidecadal teleconnection(AAMT)pattern.An NAO-based linear model for predicting winter decadal EASAT is constructed on the principle of the COAB mechanism,with good hindcast performance.The winter EASAT for 2020-34 is predicted to keep on fluctuating downward until~2025,implying a high probability of occurrence of extremely cold events in coming winters in East Asia,followed by a sudden turn towards sharp warming.The predicted 2020/21 winter EASAT is almost the same as the 2019/20 winter. | Jianping LI Tiejun XIE Xinxin TANG Hao WANG Cheng SUN Juan FENG Fei ZHENG Ruiqiang DING | 2022 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2022,39,4: | 4 |
| 13 | A comparison study of the start-up of a MnO_x filter for catalytic oxidative removal of ammonium from groundwater and surface water显示文摘As an efficient method for ammonium(NH_4^+)removal,contact catalytic oxidation technology has drawn much attention recently,due to its good low temperature resistance and short start-up period.Two identical filters were employed to compare the process for ammonium removal during the start-up period for ammonium removal in groundwater(Filter-N)and surface water(Filter-S)treatment.Two types of source water(groundwater and surface water)were used as the feed waters for the filtration trials.Although the same initiating method was used,Filter-N exhibited much better ammonium removal performance than Filter-S.The differences in catalytic activity among these two filters were probed using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and compositional analysis.XRD results indicated that different manganese oxide species were formed in Filter-N and Filter-S.Furthermore,the Mn3p XPS spectra taken on the surface of the filter films revealed that the average manganese valence of the inactive manganese oxide film collected from Filter-S(FS-MnO_x)was higher than in the film collected from Filter-N(FN-MnO_x).Mn(IV)was identified as the predominant oxidation state in FS-MnO_xand Mn(III)was identified as the predominant oxidation state in FN-MnO_x.The results of compositional analyses suggested that polyaluminum ferric chloride(PAFC)used during the surface water treatment was an important factor in the mineralogy and reactivity of MnO_x.This study provides the theoretical basis for promoting the wide application of the technology and has great practical significance. | Ya Cheng Ye Li Tinglin Huang Yuankui Sun Xinxin Shi Yuezong Shao | 2018 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2018,30,3: | 4 |

| 15 | The mechanosensitive lncRNA Neat1 promotes osteoblast function through paraspeckle-dependent Smurf1 mRNA retention显示文摘Mechanical stimulation plays an important role in bone remodeling. Exercise-induced mechanical loading enhances bone strength,whereas mechanical unloading leads to bone loss. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that long noncoding RNAs(lnc RNAs) play key roles in diverse biological, physiological and pathological contexts. However, the roles of lnc RNAs in mechanotransduction and their relationships with bone formation remain unknown. In this study, we screened mechanosensing lnc RNAs in osteoblasts and identified Neat1, the most clearly decreased lnc RNA under simulated microgravity. Of note, not only Neat1 expression but also the specific paraspeckle structure formed by Neat1 was sensitive to different mechanical stimulations, which were closely associated with osteoblast function. Paraspeckles exhibited small punctate aggregates under simulated microgravity and elongated prolate or larger irregular structures under mechanical loading. Neat1 knockout mice displayed disrupted bone formation, impaired bone structure and strength, and reduced bone mass. Neat1 deficiency in osteoblasts reduced the response of osteoblasts to mechanical stimulation. In vivo, Neat1 knockout in mice weakened the bone phenotypes in response to mechanical loading and hindlimb unloading stimulation. Mechanistically, paraspeckles promoted nuclear retention of E3 ubiquitin ligase Smurf1 m RNA and downregulation of their translation, thus inhibiting ubiquitination-mediated degradation of the osteoblast master transcription factor Runx2, a Smurf1 target. | 16 | Multi-proxy evidence of environmental change related to collapse of the Liangzhu Culture in the Yangtze Delta,China显示文摘The Liangzhu Culture(5300–4300 cal.a BP)has been regarded as the culmination of the Neolithic Age in the Yangtze Delta and as an archaic state.However,the reason behind the collapse of the Liangzhu Culture remains controversial.Some scholars attributed it to social conflicts or foreign invasions,while others suggested that environmental deterioration,such as cold episodes,inundation and palaeo-typhoon events,disrupted the civilization.Notably,the yellowish silty sediments widely overlying the Liangzhu group sites have been presumed to be one of the vital clues to resolving these issues.The process and cause of their formation are key to understanding the decline in the Liangzhu Culture.In this study,two typical profiles composed of the Liangzhu cultural layer and yellowish silty sediments were collected in Liangzhu Ancient City.Multiple proxies,including pollen,phytoliths and diatoms,along with radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating and synthesized geochemical evidence from different sediments,were applied to reconstruct ecological and hydrological changes and discuss their linkage to cultural collapse.The regional ecology was typical freshwater wetlands during 4800–4400 cal.a BP,which facilitated rice farming and large-scale architectural engineering in Liangzhu Ancient City.Evidence from microfossils and dating of the yellowish silty sediments indicated that Liangzhu Ancient City was significantly affected by seawater after abandonment during 4300–3400 cal.a BP.Furthermore,geochemical evidence,including trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions,suggested that the primary provenance of the yellowish silt was a mixture of sediments from the Qiantang River,East China Sea,Yangtze River and Yellow River,which had been transported to Liangzhu Ancient City by the Yellow Sea Coastal Current and a marine transgression.Therefore,based on evidence from archaeological sites and numerical simulation in the Yangtze Delta,it was supposed that the short-term accelerated relative sea-level rise at approximately 4400 cal.a BP caused a marine transgression around Taihu Lake,formed a large range of yellowish silty sediments,destroyed rice farming production,and ultimately led to the collapse of the Liangzhu Culture. | Keyang HE Houyuan LU Guoping SUN Xiang JI Yonglei WANG Kaikai YAN Xinxin ZUO Jiangping ZHANG Bin LIU Ningyuan WANG | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,6: | 3 |

| 18 | Ginsenoside Rb1 prevents high glucose-induced Schwann cell injury through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of ginsenoside Rb1 on high glucose-induced neurotoxicity and the underlying molecular mechanism in primary cultured Schwann cells(SCs).METHODS: Cultured SCs were divided into six groups that received(a) normal glucose,(b) osmotic control,(c) high glucose,(d) high glucose plus 1μM ginsenoside Rb1,(e) high glucose plus 10 μM ginsenoside Rb1, or(f) high glucose plus 100 μM alpha lipoic acid(ALA). Intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS) generation and mitochondrial transmembrane potential(ΔΨm) were detected by flow cytometric analyses. Apoptosis was confirmed by the annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide(PI) method,and the concentration of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxy guanosine(8-OHd G) was detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Western blotting was performed to analyze the expression levels of important transcription factors such as cytochrome c, bcl-2, bax, activated caspase-3, and activated poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase(PARP).RESULTS: Ginsenoside Rb1 inhibited high glucose-induced oxidative stress by decreasing ROS and 8-OHd G levels as well as mitochondrial depolarization in SCs. 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide and annexin V-FITC/PI assays showed that incubating SCs with high glucose decreased cell viability and increased the number of apoptotic cells, whereas treatment with ginsenoside Rb1 protected SCs against high glucose-induced cell damage. Furthermore, ginsenoside Rb1 down-regulated the expression of high glucose-induced bax and cytochrome c release but up-regulated bcl-2 expression. Among them, three strains already had been identified as new species of two genera and sixteen isolates showed relatively low 16 S rRNA similarities < 98.6% to validly described species. Seventy-five of the isolates were selected as representative strains to screen antibacterial activity and mechanism. Forty-seven strains showed antagonistic activity against at least one of the indicator bacteria. Two Streptomyces strains produced bioactive compounds inducing DNA damage, and two Streptomyces strains produced bioactive compounds with inhibitory activity on protein biosynthesis. Notably, the strain Streptomyces sp. 8P21H-1 that demonstrated both strong antibacterial activity and inhibitory activity on protein biosynthesis was prioritized for exploring new antibiotics.Under the strategy of integrating genetics-based discovery program and MS/MS-based molecular networking, two new streptogramin-type antibiotics, i.e., acetyl-griseoviridin and desulphurizing griseoviridin, along with known griseoviridin, were isolated from the culture broth of strain 8P21H-1. Their chemical structures were determined by HR-MS, and 1D and 2D NMR. | 20 | Epidemiological Characteristics of Occupational Cancers Reported—China,2006−2020显示文摘Introduction:Occupational cancers are a major threat to workers’health in China.The latest version of the Classification and Catalogue of the Occupational Diseases includes 11 occupational cancers.This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of occupational cancers in China reported to the National Occupational Disease Reporting System during 2006−2020.Methods:Occupational cancers reported during 2016−2020 were obtained from the National Occupational Disease Reporting System.Epidemiological characteristics were analyzed by year,region,industry,gender,age at diagnosis,and exposure duration to occupational hazards.Results:Overall,a total of 1,116 cases of occupational cancers were reported between 2006 and 2020.The main types reported were leukemia caused by benzene exposure(511,45.79%),lung cancer caused by coke oven exhaust exposure(266,23.84%),and lung cancer and mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure(226,20.25%).There were 6 provincial-level administrative divisions(PLADs)that had reported over 50 new cases in the last 15 years.Most cases(913,81.18%)were distributed in the manufacturing industry.There were 870(77.96%)male cases and 246(22.04%)female cases.The average age at diagnosis of all reported cases was 51.91±15.85 years,and the median exposure duration to occupational hazards was 12(5.29−23.25)years.Conclusions:There is a large discrepancy between the high morbidity of occupational cancers and a low number of cases diagnosed and reported cases.Occupational cancers in China may be underestimated,and comprehensive measures should be taken to improve the diagnosis and reporting of occupational cancers. | Xinxin Li Dan Wang Anqi Liu Weijiang Hu Xin Sun | 2022 | China CDC weekly2022,4,17: | 2 |
