| 1 | Cancer statistics in China and United States,2022:profiles,trends,and determinants显示文摘Background:The cancer burden in the United States of America(USA)has decreased gradually.However,China is experiencing a transition in its cancer profiles,with greater incidence of cancers that were previously more common in the USA.This study compared the latest cancer profiles,trends,and determinants between China and USA.Methods:This was a comparative study using open-source data.Cancer cases and deaths in 2022 were calculated using cancer estimates from GLOBOCAN 2020 and population estimates from the United Nations.Trends in cancer incidence and mortality rates in the USA used data from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results program and National Center for Health Statistics.Chinese data were obtained from cancer registry reports.Data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 and a decomposition method were used to express cancer deaths as the product of four determinant factors.Results:In 2022,there will be approximately 4,820,000 and 2,370,000 new cancer cases,and 3,210,000 and 640,000 cancer deaths in China and the USA,respectively.The most common cancers are lung cancer in China and breast cancer in the USA,and lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both.Age-standardized incidence and mortality rates for lung cancer and colorectal cancer in the USA have decreased significantly recently,but rates of liver cancer have increased slightly.Rates of stomach,liver,and esophageal cancer decreased gradually in China,but rates have increased for colorectal cancer in the whole population,prostate cancer in men,and other seven cancer types in women.Increases in adult population size and population aging were major determinants for incremental cancer deaths,and case-fatality rates contributed to reduced cancer deaths in both countries.Conclusions:The decreasing cancer burden in liver,stomach,and esophagus,and increasing burden in lung,colorectum,breast,and prostate,mean that cancer profiles in China and the USA are converging.Population aging is a growing determinant of incremental cancer burden.Progress in cancer prevention and care in the USA,and measures to actively respond to population aging,may help China to reduce the cancer burden. | Changfa Xia Xuesi Dong He Li Maomao Cao Dianqin Sun Siyi He Fan Yang Xinxin Yan Shaoli Zhang Ni Li Wanqing Chen | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,,5: | 827 |
| 2 | Current cancer burden in China: epidemiology, etiology, and prevention显示文摘Cancer has become the most common cause of death in China.Owing to rapid economic development,improved livelihood,and shifts in risk factors,cancer epidemiology has experienced substantial changes during the past several decades.In this review,we aim to describe the current cancer epidemiology of the main types of cancer in China,report major risk factors associated with cancer development,and summarize the contributions of the Chinese government to controlling the cancer burden.A total of 4,064,000 new cases were diagnosed in China in 2016.The most frequent types are lung cancer(828,100;20.4%),colorectal cancer(408,000;10.0%),and gastric cancer(396,500;9.8%).Lung(657,000;27.2%),liver(336,400,13.9%),and stomach(288,500;12.0%)cancers are the 3 most deadly cancers in the general population.The 5-year survival rate for cancer has dramatically increased in recent decades.However,liver and particularly pancreatic cancers still have the poorest prognosis.The main modifiable risk factors associated with cancer development include infectious agents,smoking,alcohol consumption,obesity,unhealthful dietary habits,and inadequate physical activity.The Chinese government has made unremitting efforts to decrease the cancer burden,including cancer education and investment in cancer screening programs. | Maomao Cao He Li Dianqin Sun Siyi He Xinxin Yan Fan Yang Shaoli Zhang Changfa Xia Lin Lei Ji Peng Wanqing Chen | 2022 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2022,19,8: | 33 |
| 3 | Timing and splitting of nitrogen fertilizer supply to increase crop yield and efficiency of nitrogen utilization in a wheat–peanut relay intercropping system in China显示文摘Agronomically optimizing the timing and rates of nitrogen(N) fertilizer application can increase crop yield and decrease N loss to the environment. Wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)–peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) relay intercropping systems are a mainstay of economic and food security in China. We performed a field experiment to investigate the effects of N fertilizer on N recovery efficiency, crop yield, and N loss rate in wheat–peanut relay intercropping systems in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, China during 2015–2017. The N was applied on the day before sowing, the jointing stage(G30) or the booting stage(G40) of winter wheat, and the anthesis stage(R1) of peanut in the following percentage splits: 50-50-0-0(N1), 35-35-0-30(N2), and 35-0-35-30(N3), using 300 kg N ha-1, with 0 kg N ha-1(N0) as control. ^(15)N-labeled(20.14 atom %) urea was used to trace the fate of N in microplots. The yields of wheat and peanut increased by 12.4% and 15.4% under the N2 and N3 treatments, relative to those under the N1 treatment. The ^(15)N recovery efficiencies( ^(15)NRE) were 64.9% and 58.1% for treatments N2 and N3, significantly greater than that for the N1 treatment(45.3%). The potential N loss rates for the treatments N2 and N3 were23.7% and 7.0%, significantly lower than that for treatment N1(30.1%). Withholding N supply until the booting stage(N3) did not reduce the wheat grain yield; however, it increased the N content derived from ^(15)N-labeled urea in peanuts, promoted the distribution of ^(15)N to pods, and ultimately increased pod yields in comparison with those obtained by topdressing N at jointing stage(N2). In comparison with N2, the N uptake and N recovery efficiency(NRE) of N3 was increased by 12.0% and 24.1%,respectively, while the apparent N loss decreased by 16.7%. In conclusion, applying N fertilizer with three splits and delaying topdressing fertilization until G40 of winter wheat increased total grain yields and NRE and reduced N loss. | 4 | Population-level economic burden of lung cancer in China:Provisional prevalence-based estimations,2017-2030显示文摘Objective:Population-level economic burden is essential for prioritizing healthcare resources and healthcare budget making in the future.However,little is known about the economic burden of lung cancer in China.Methods:A prevalence-based approach was adopted to estimate the economic burden of lung cancer,including direct expenditure(medical and non-medical)and indirect cost(disability and premature death).Data on direct expenditure and work-loss days per patient in each year post-diagnosis were obtained from two primary surveys.Other parameters were obtained from literatures and official reports.Projections were conducted based on varying parameters.All expenditure data were reported in United States dollars(USD)using 2017 value(exchange rate:1 USD=6.760 CNY),with the discount rate of 3%.Results:The total economic burden of lung cancer was estimated to be 25,069 million USD in China in 2017(0.121%of gross domestic productivity,GDP).The estimated direct expenditure was 11,098 million USD,up to1.43%of total healthcare expenditure for China,covering 10,303 million USD and 795 million USD for medical and non-medical expenditure,respectively.The estimated indirect cost was 13,971 million,including 1,517 million USD due to disability and 12,454 million USD due to premature death.Under current assumptions,the projected total economic burden would increase to 30.1 billion USD,40.4 billion USD,and 53.4 billion USD in 2020,2025,and 2030,accounting for 0.121%,0.131%,and 0.146%of China's GDP,respectively.However,if China meets the United Nation sustainable development goal of reducing premature death from non-communicable diseases by one-third by 2030,the total economic burden in 2030 would be 31.9 billion USD,0.087%of China's GDP.Conclusions:The economic burden of lung cancer in China in 2017 is substantial and more likely to increase significantly in the future.Policy makers need to take urgent actions in budget making for health systems.The economic burden could be alleviated by reducing the disease burden of lung cancer via effective control and prevention actions. | Chengcheng Liu Jufang Shi Hong Wang Xinxin Yan Le Wang Jiansong Ren Mark Parascandola Wanqing Chen Alin Dai | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2021,33,1: | 6 |
| 5 | Colorectal cancer burden,trends and risk factors in China:A review and comparison with the United States显示文摘Objective:China and the United States(the U.S.)have the heaviest colorectal cancer(CRC)burden with considerable variations in temporal trends.This study aims to analyze the temporal patterns of CRC burden and its risk factors in China and the U.S.across the past three decades.Methods:Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease(GBD)Study in 2019,including cases,deaths,disability-adjusted life-years(DALYs),age-standardized rate(ASR),and summary exposure value(SEV)of CRC in China and the U.S.between 1990 and 2019.Annual average percentage changes(AAPCs)of CRC burden were calculated using the Joinpoint regression model.The mortality in CRC attributable to potential risk factors was characterized by countries,gender,and age groups.Results:In 2019,there were 607,900 and 227,241 CRC cases,and 261,777 and 84,026 CRC deaths in China and the U.S.,respectively.The age-standardized incidence rate(ASIR)was 30.55 per 100,000 in China and 41.86 per100,000 in the U.S.,and the age-standardized mortality rate(ASMR)was 13.86 per 100,000 in China and 14.77 per100,000 in the U.S.CRC incidence,mortality,and DALY rate in the U.S.showed downward trends in the past three decades(AAPC=-0.47,-1.06,and-0.88,respectively),while upward trends were observed in China(AAPC=3.11,1.05,and 0.91,respectively).Among the cause of CRC,the leading risk factor contributing to CRC death was low milk in China and smoking in the U.S.,respectively.Conclusions:From 1990 to 2019,the burden of CRC in China increased dramatically,particularly for males and middle-aged and elderly people.The management of the major risk factors associated with the high burden of CRC should be enhanced. | Qianru Li Hongliang Wu Maomao Cao He Li Siyi He Fan Yang Xinxin Yan Shaoli Zhang Yi Teng Changfa Xia Ji Peng Wanqing Chen | 2022 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2022,34,5: | 6 |
| 6 | In vitro and in vivo activity of D-serine in combination with β-lactam antibiotics against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus显示文摘As D-amino acids play important roles in the physiological metabolism of bacteria,combination of D-amino acids with antibiotics may provide synergistic antibacterial activity. The aim of the study was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo activity of D-serine alone and in combination withβ-lactams against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) strains, and to explore the possible sensitization mechanisms. The activity of D-serine, β-lactams alone and in combinations was evaluated both in vitro by standard MICs, time–kill curves and checkerboard assays, and in vivo by murine systemic infection model as well as neutropenic thigh infection model. An in vitro synergistic effect was demonstrated with the combination of D-serine and β-lactams against MRSA standard and clinical strains.Importantly, the combinations enhanced the therapeutic efficacy in the animal models as compared toβ-lactam alone groups. Initial mechanism study suggested possible revision of D-alanine-D-alanine residue to D-alanine-D-serine in peptidoglycan by adding of D-alanine in the medium, which may cause decreased affinity to PBPs during transpeptidation. In conclusion, D-serine had synergistic activity in combination with β-lactams against MRSA strains both in vitro and in vivo. | 11 | Multi-proxy evidence of environmental change related to collapse of the Liangzhu Culture in the Yangtze Delta,China显示文摘The Liangzhu Culture(5300–4300 cal.a BP)has been regarded as the culmination of the Neolithic Age in the Yangtze Delta and as an archaic state.However,the reason behind the collapse of the Liangzhu Culture remains controversial.Some scholars attributed it to social conflicts or foreign invasions,while others suggested that environmental deterioration,such as cold episodes,inundation and palaeo-typhoon events,disrupted the civilization.Notably,the yellowish silty sediments widely overlying the Liangzhu group sites have been presumed to be one of the vital clues to resolving these issues.The process and cause of their formation are key to understanding the decline in the Liangzhu Culture.In this study,two typical profiles composed of the Liangzhu cultural layer and yellowish silty sediments were collected in Liangzhu Ancient City.Multiple proxies,including pollen,phytoliths and diatoms,along with radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating and synthesized geochemical evidence from different sediments,were applied to reconstruct ecological and hydrological changes and discuss their linkage to cultural collapse.The regional ecology was typical freshwater wetlands during 4800–4400 cal.a BP,which facilitated rice farming and large-scale architectural engineering in Liangzhu Ancient City.Evidence from microfossils and dating of the yellowish silty sediments indicated that Liangzhu Ancient City was significantly affected by seawater after abandonment during 4300–3400 cal.a BP.Furthermore,geochemical evidence,including trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions,suggested that the primary provenance of the yellowish silt was a mixture of sediments from the Qiantang River,East China Sea,Yangtze River and Yellow River,which had been transported to Liangzhu Ancient City by the Yellow Sea Coastal Current and a marine transgression.Therefore,based on evidence from archaeological sites and numerical simulation in the Yangtze Delta,it was supposed that the short-term accelerated relative sea-level rise at approximately 4400 cal.a BP caused a marine transgression around Taihu Lake,formed a large range of yellowish silty sediments,destroyed rice farming production,and ultimately led to the collapse of the Liangzhu Culture. | Keyang HE Houyuan LU Guoping SUN Xiang JI Yonglei WANG Kaikai YAN Xinxin ZUO Jiangping ZHANG Bin LIU Ningyuan WANG | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,6: | 3 |

However, existing studies did not explain the mechanism of some interesting phenomena. Severe developmental defects in gynogenetic haploids can lead to death during hatching. After diploidization of chromosomes, gynogenetic diploids may dispense from the remarkable malformation and restore the viability, although the development time is longer and the survival rate is lower compared with normal diploids. The aim of this study was to reveal key mechanism in haploid syndrome of Japanese flounder, a commercially important marine teleost in East Asia. We measured genome-scale gene expression of flounder haploid, gynogenetic diploid and normal diploid embryos using RNA-Seq, constructed a module-centric co-expression network based on weighted correlation network analysis(WGCNA) and analyzed the biological functions of correlated modules. Module gene content analysis revealed that the formation of gynogenetic haploids was closely related to the abnormality of plasma proteins, and the up-regulation of p53 signaling pathway might rescue gynogenetic embryos from haploid syndrome via regulating cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and DNA repair. Moreover, normal diploid has more robust nervous system. By introducing software timing technique, the minimum time base of factory setting improves from 0.1 s to 0.03 s. The timing counts performance and longtime stability are also discussed in detail. The automatic data recording and saving facilitates data analysis and processing. | 15 | Stomach cancer burden in China: Epidemiology and prevention显示文摘In 2020, stomach cancer was the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Due to the relatively huge population base and the poor survival rate, stomach cancer is still a threat in China, and accounts for nearly half of the cases worldwide. Fortunately, in China, the incidence and mortality rates of stomach cancer presented a declining trend owing to the change of individual life styles and the persistent efforts to prevent stomach cancer from the governments at all levels. Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori)infection, poor eating habits, smoking, history of gastrointestinal disorders, and family history of stomach cancer are the main risk factors for stomach cancer in China. | 18 | Burden of liver cancer:From epidemiology to prevention显示文摘In this review,we offer a concise overview of liver cancer epidemiology in China and worldwide from the official databases of GLOBOCAN 2020 and the National Cancer Registry in China.We also summarized the evidence for the main risk factors associated with liver cancer risk and discuss strategies implemented in China to control the liver cancer burden.Overall,liver cancer was the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide in 2020.Although China contributed to nearly half of cases across the world alone,the incidence and mortality rates of liver cancer presented a declining trend owing to the persistent efforts from the governments at all levels.The current liver cancer burden in China still faces an arduous challenge due to the relatively large population base as well as the substantially low survival rate(12.1%).To better control the liver cancer burden with the lowest cost,specific measures should be conducted by reducing exposure to established risk factors such as hepatitis B infection and aflatoxin.The promotion of surveillance is also an important method to prolong the survival of liver cancer.This review will provide basic information for future direction on the control of liver cancer burden. | Qianru Li Maomao Cao Lin Lei Fan Yang He Li Xinxin Yan Siyi He Shaoli Zhang Yi Teng Changfa Xia Wanqing Chen | 2022 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2022,34,6: | 2 |
