2Novel diamond shuttle to deliver flexible neural probe with reduced tissue compression显示文摘The ability to deliver flexible biosensors through the toughest membranes of the central and peripheral nervous system is an important challenge in neuroscience and neural engineering.Bioelectronic devices implanted through dura mater and thick epineurium would ideally create minimal compression and acute damage as they reach the neurons of interest.We demonstrate that a three-dimensional diamond shuttle can be easily made with a vertical support to deliver ultra-compliant polymer microelectrodes(4.5-µm thick)through dura mater and thick epineurium.The diamond shuttle has 54%less cross-sectional area than an equivalently stiff silicon shuttle,which we simulated will result in a 37%reduction in blood vessel damage.We also discovered that higher frequency oscillation of the shuttle(200Hz)significantly reduced tissue compression regardless of the insertion speed,while slow speeds also independently reduced tissue compression.Insertion and recording performance are demonstrated in rat and feline models,but the large design space of these tools are suitable for research in a variety of animal models and nervous system targets.Kyounghwan Na Zachariah J.Sperry Jiaao Lu Mihaly Voroslakos Saman S.Parizi Tim M.Bruns Euisik Yoon John P.Seymour 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:1

9How Frequently Will the Persistent Heavy Rainfall over the Middle and Lower Yangtze River Basin in Summer 2020 Happen under Global Warming?显示文摘The middle and lower Yangtze River basin(MLYRB)suffered persistent heavy rainfall in summer 2020,with nearly continuous rainfall for about six consecutive weeks.How the likelihood of persistent heavy rainfall resembling that which occurred over the MLYRB in summer 2020(hereafter 2020PHR-like event)would change under global warming is investigated.An index that reflects maximum accumulated precipitation during a consecutive five-week period in summer(Rx35day)is introduced.This accumulated precipitation index in summer 2020 is 60%stronger than the climatology,and a statistical analysis further shows that the 2020 event is a 1-in-70-year event.The model projection results derived from the 50-member ensemble of CanESM2 and the multimodel ensemble(MME)of the CMIP5 and CMIP6 models show that the occurrence probability of the 2020PHR-like event will dramatically increase under global warming.Based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test,one-third of the CMIP5 and CMIP6 models that have reasonable performance in reproducing the 2020PHR-like event in their historical simulations are selected for the future projection study.The CMIP5 and CMIP6 MME results show that the occurrence probability of the 2020PHR-like event under the present-day climate will be double under lower-emission scenarios(CMIP5 RCP4.5,CMIP6 SSP1-2.6,and SSP2-4.5)and 3-5 times greater under higher-emission scenarios(3.0 times for CMIP5 RCP8.5,2.9 times for CMIP6 SSP3-7.0,and 4.8 times for CMIP6 SSP5-8.5).The inter-model spread of the probability change is small,lending confidence to the projection results.The results provide a scientific reference for mitigation of and adaptation to future climate change.Zi-An GE Lin CHEN Tim LI Lu WANG 2022Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2022,39,10:1

16Decreasing Trend of Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Inner-Core Size over the Past Decades显示文摘Studies on tropical cyclone(TC)inner-core size have become increasingly active in recent years.However,few studies have investigated the trend of TC inner-core size.Here,we introduce a new index to measure TC inner-core size and calculate the observed trend.This index can greatly reduce the influence of data heterogeneity and uncertainty.It also considers public concern because the new index is mainly determined by the inner-core size of strong TCs,which attract more public attention than weak TCs.The results show that in the past decades,TC inner-core size has a significant downtrend that is significant above the 99%confidence level when the new index is used.We also show that this trend is probably related to the increase in TC intensity and relatively small inner-core size of strong TCs.Moreover,relative sea surface temperature(SST)is assumed to make contributions to the downtrend of TC inner-core size,which has a significant negative correlation with the new index.Hanrui SHOU Tim LI Yuan SUN Lu WANG Jia LIU 2021Journal of Meteorological Research2021,35,4:0
