1Expression of calreticulin is associated with infiltration of T-cells in stage ⅢB colon cancer显示文摘AIM: To investigate the correlation between expression of calreticulin and infiltration of lymphocytes in stage ⅢB colon cancer. METHODS: Sixty-eight pathologically-confirmed speci-mens were obtained from stage ⅢB (T3N1M0) colon cancer patients who underwent radical resection between January 1999 and May 2002 at the Cancer Center of Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China. Immuno-histochemical analysis was performed to show infiltration of lymphocytes and expression of calreticulin in colon cancer. Association between calreticulin expression, infiltration of lymphocytes, and 5-year survival rate of patients was assessed. RESULTS: The expression level of calreticulin was lower in cancer nest than in its adjacent normal epithelium since 61.8% (42/68) of the samples were stained with calreticulin in colon cancer. The expression of calreticulin in colon cancer was associated with the infi ltration of CD45RO+ cells rather than with that of CD3+ cells. In addition, the stronger expression of calreticulin and the higher infiltration of CD3+ and CD45RO+ cells in colon cancer were associated with the higher 5-year survival rate of patients. 3Polymorphisms of MTHFD,plasma homocysteine levels, and risk of gastric cancer in ahigh-risk Chinese population显示文摘Purpose:Accumulative evidence suggests that folate has a protective effect on gastric cancer. The methylenetetrahyd-rofolate dlehydrogenase(MTHFD) plays an important role in folate and homocysteine metabolisms, and polymorphisms of MTHFD may result in disturbance of the folate-mediated homocysteine pathway. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that genetic variants of MTHFD and plasma homocysteine levels are associated with risk of gastric cancer and modulated by genotypes of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR). Experimental Design: We genotyped G1958A and T401C in MTHFD and C677T in MTHFR and detected total plasma homocysteine(tHcy) levels in a case-control study of 589 gastric cancer cases and 635 cancer-free controls in a high-risk Chinese population. Results:The variant genotypes of MTHFD 1958AA and 401CC were associated with a significantly increased risk of gastric canceradjusted odds ratio(OR), 2.05; 95% confidence interval(95% CI),1.34-3.13 for 1958AA; adjusted OR,1.43; 95% CI,1.14-1.80 for 401CC compared with 1958GG/GA and 401TT/TC genotypes, respectively. Both of the effects were more evident in the subjects carrying MTHFR 677CT/TT genotypes. The average tHcy level was significantly higher in gastric cancer cases than in controls(P < 0.01), and the upper quartile of tHcy (> 13.6 mu mol/L) was associated with an 82% significantly increased risk of gastric cancer, compared with the lowest quartile of tHcy(<= 8.0 pmol/L;adjusted OR,1.82; 95% CI,1.20-2.75). Conclusions:The strong associations between MTHFD variants and the plasma tHcy levels and gastric cancer risk suggest, for the first time, a possible gene-environment interaction between genetic variants of folate-metabolizing genes and high tHcy levels in gastric carcinogenesis.Wang, L. 5Neonatal vitamin A injection promotes cattle muscle growth and increases oxidative muscle fibers显示文摘Background: Vitamin A and its metabolite,retinoic acid(RA),are important regulators of cell differentiation and organ morphogenesis.Its impact on beef cattle muscle growth remains undefined.Method: Angus steer calves were administrated with 0(control) or 150,000 IU vitamin A(retinyl palmitate in glycerol,i.m.) per calf at birth and 1 month of age.At 2 months of age,a biopsy of the Biceps femoris muscle was obtained to analyze the immediate effects of vitamin A injection on myogenic capacity of muscle cells.The resulting steers were harvested at 14 months of age.Results: Vitamin A administration increased cattle growth at 2 months.At 2 months of age,Vitamin A increased PAX7 positive satellite cells and the expression of myogenic marker genes including PAX7,MYF5,MYOD and MYOG.Muscle derived mononuclear cells were further isolated and induced myogenesis in vitro.More myotubes and a higher degree of myogenesis was observed in vitamin A groups.Consistently,vitamin A increased Latissimus dorsi(LD) muscle fiber size at harvest.In addition,vitamin A increased the ratio of oxidative type I and type IIA fibers and reduced the glycolic type IIX fibers.Furthermore,we found that RA,a key bioactive metabolite of vitamin A,activated PPARGC1 A promoter,which explains the upregulated expression of PPARGC1 A in skeletal muscle.Conclusion: Vitamin A administration to neonatal calves enhanced postnatal muscle growth by promoting myogenesis and increasing satellite cell density,accompanied with a shift to oxidative muscle fibers.Bo Wang Wei Nie Xing Fu Jeanene M de Avila Yannan Ma Mei-Jun Zhu Martin Maquivar Steven M Parish Jan R Busboom Mark L Nelson Min Du 2019Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2019,10,1:3
6A new Early Cretaceous dinosaur track assemblage and the first definite non-avian theropod swim trackway from China显示文摘The trackway of a swimming theropod (ichnogenus Characichnos) is reported from the Lower Cretaceous Feitianshan Formation of Sichuan, China. These swim tracks help confirm that non-avian theropods were capable of forging moderately deep bodies of water. The trackway occurs on the same surface as a typical walking trackway of a sauropod (ichnogenus Brontopodus). Both occurrences are the first reported from the Cretaceous of Sichuan, and the swim tracks are the first well-preserved example of a Characichnos trackway from China. Additionally, a theropod walking trackway and several ornithopod walking trackways (similar to the ichnogenus Caririchnium) occur in the same horizon. The ornithopod trackways show a parallel orientation, suggesting gregarious behavior of the trackmakers, which may have been iguanodontiforms and/or hadrosauriforms. 8“Trends” and variations of global oceanic evaporation data sets from remote sensing显示文摘The variability in global oceanic evaporation data sets was examined for the period 1988-2000.These data sets are satellite estimates based on bulk aerodynamic formulations and include the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Satellite-based Surface Turbulent Flux version 2(GSSTF2),the Japanese-ocean flux using remote sensing observations(J-OFURO),and the Hamburg Ocean-Atmosphere Parameters and Fluxes from Satellite version 2(HOAPS2).The National Center for Environmental Prediction(NCEP)reanalysis is also included for comparison.An increase in global average surface latent heat flux(SLHF)can be observed in all the data sets.Empirical mode decomposition(EMD)shows long-term increases that started around 1990 for all remote sensing data sets.The effect of Mt.Pinatubo eruption in 1991 is clearly evident in HOAPS2 but is independent of the long-term increase.Linear regression analyses show increases of 9.4%,13.0%,7.3%,and 3.9% for GSSTF2,J-OFURO,HOAPS2 and NCEP,for the periods of the data sets.Empirical orthogonal function(EOF)analyses show that the pattern of the first EOF of all data sets is consistent with a decadal variation associated with the enhancement of the tropical Hadley circulation,which is supported by other satellite observations.The second EOF of all four data sets is an ENSO mode,and the correlations between their time series and an SOI are 0.74,0.71,0.59,and 0.61 for GSSTF2,J-OFURO,HOAPS2,and NCEP in that order.When the Hadley modes are removed from the remote sensing data,the residue global increases are reduced to 2.2%,7.3%,and <1% for GSSTF2,J-OFURO and HOAPS,respectively.If the ENSO mode is used as a calibration standard for the data sets,the Hadley mode is at least comparable to,if not larger than,the ENSO mode during our study period.CHIU Long S CHOKNGAMWONG R XING Yukun YANG Ruixin SHIE Chung-Lin 2008Acta Oceanologica Sinica2008,27,3:2
9Application of DNA barcodes in Hedyotis L.(Spermacoceae,Rubiaceae)显示文摘The potential application of DNA barcodes of plastid(matK,trnH-psbA,petD,and rbcL) and nuclear(internal transcribed spacer(ITS) of rDNA) DNA regions was investigated for 25 Hedyotis taxa.The ITS showed the best species discrimination by resolving 23 of the species as exclusive lineages with no shared alleles between any of the 24 distinct species(H.assimilis and H.mellii are not supported as distinct species based on our molecular and morphological data).Conversely,rbcL performed the worst and only resolved 10 of the species as exclusive lineages,and 10 species with shared alleles.Using ITS has the advantage of high PCR amplification success and it provides good intra-and interspecific variation distribution patterns.The most powerful plastid markers were petD and trnH-psbA,but we could amplify and sequence trnH-psbA for only 83% of the accessions sampled.Combination of ITS and petD performed extremely well,with all 24 of the distinct species resolved as exclusive lineages and no shared alleles between any of the distinct species.We therefore recommend ITS,or a combination of ITS and petD,as the standard DNA barcode in Hedyotis,but acknowledge that there are no shared alleles between distinct species for matK and rbcL combined.Xing GUO Mark R SIMMONS Paul Pui-Hay BUT Pang-Chui SHAW Rui-Jiang WANG 2011Journal of Systematics and Evolution2011,49,3:2
10Tooth loss and alveolar remodeling in Sinosaurus triassicus (Dinosauria: Theropoda) from the Lower Jurassic strata of the Lufeng Basin, China显示文摘Pathological or traumatic loss of teeth often results in the resorption and remodeling of the affected alveoli in mammals. However, instances of alveolar remodeling in reptiles are rare. A remodeled alveolus in the maxilla of the Chinese theropod Sinosaurus (Lower Jurassic Lower Lufeng Formation) is the first confirmed example of such dental pathology in a dinosaur. Given the known relationship between feeding behavior and tooth damage in theropods (teeth with spalled enamel, tooth crowns embedded in bone) and the absence of dentary, maxillary, and premaxillary osteomyelitis, traumatic loss of a tooth is most likely the cause of alveolar remodeling.
