2The Impacts of Urbanization on the Distribution and Body Condition of the Rice-paddy Frog(Fejervarya multistriata) and Gold-striped Pond Frog(Pelophylax plancyi) in Shanghai,China显示文摘Previous studies have suggested that urbanization presents a major threat to anuran populations. However, very few studies have looked at the relationship between urbanization and anuran body condition. We investigated whether the distribution and body condition of the rice-paddy frog(Fejervarya multistriata) and gold-striped pond frog(Pelophylax plancyi) are influenced by increasing urbanization in Shanghai, China. Four study sites with six indicators of the major land-cover types were scored to indicate their position on an urbanization gradient. We found that both the density and body condition of F. multistriata declined significantly along this gradient. Although we observed a significant difference in body condition of P. plancyi among study sites with different degrees of urbanization, we did not find any corresponding significant differences in population density. 3Major Factors Affecting the Distribution of Anuran Communities in the Urban, Suburban and Rural Areas of Shanghai, China显示文摘There is a dearth of information on the effects of landscape and microhabitat variables on the distribution of anurans in areas of rapid urban development, in both tropical and subtropical regions. Therefore, we studied 24 wetlands sites from the center of Shanghai city, China extending outward to rural areas. Sampling was performed from May through July 2014. Urbanization was categorized by the proportion of hard ground cover. Transect sampling and ‘calling' surveys were used to investigated the richness and density of anurans; microhabitat factors were recorded simultaneously. One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal–Wallis tests were conducted to analyze differences of total density, species richness and density of individual anuran species in the three urbanization levels; redundancy analysis was carried out on the relationship between anuran density and environmental variables. Species richness was lowest in the areas where the proportion of hard ground cover was > 80%, and the total density of anurans was highest in the areas where coverage of the hard ground cover was < 30%. We recorded five species belonging to four genera and four families and an individual anuran species that had varied representations in urban environments. Beijing gold-striped pond frogs(Pelophylax plancyi) and Zhoushan toads(Bufo gargarizans) appeared to be well adapted to the Shanghai metropolis. Large water environments and aquatic vegetation(floating-leaves and emergent vegetation) were indicators of the presence of Beijing gold-striped pond frogs. The density of black-spotted pond frog(Pelophylax nigromaculatus) was at the lowest density in the areas where hard ground coverage was > 80%, and tended to prefer larger bodies of water. Hong Kong rice-paddy frogs(Fejervarya multistriata) and ornamented pygmy frogs(Microhyla achatina) both suffered severely from cropland loss due to urban development. 4Testing reintroduction as a conservation strategy for the critically endangered Chinese alligator: Movements and home range of released captive individuals显示文摘The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is considered the most critically endangered crocodilian as a result of the near total loss of its habitat and its extremely small and fragmented wild populations. Plans for population recovery lie mostly with wetland res- toration and the reintroduction of captive-reared animals. We carried out a first-trial release of 3 adult Chinese alligators (1♂, 2♀) into a pond at the Hongxing conservation site, Xuancheng, southern Anhui Province; the animals were radio-tracked from May to October in 2003. We hypothesized that after a period of adaptation, the alligators would establish definable home ranges. Two (1♂, 1♀) of the 3 alligators were monitored for the whole of the tracking period. The male had an annual home-range size of 7.61 hm2, and the female 4.00 hm2. Water temperature and pond water level were two important factors influencing the alligators' distributions, and daily movements. The radio-tracked alligators had overlapping home ranges, which notably included the one substantial island in the pond; that island is the only known nesting site of the local native wild alligators. Aggressive interactions between the released alligators and native wild alligators were observed during the breeding season around this island. All the three reintroduced alligators survived the winter of 2003 and were alive in the same pond in 2008. We concluded that the Hongxing conservation site provided a suitable habitat for the reintroduced alligators. However, the low water level in the pond resulting from farmland irrigation in August and September can be a substantial threat to the alligators' survival. 5The pathology,phylogeny,and epidemiology of Echinococcus ortleppi(G5 genotype):a new case report of echinococcosis in China显示文摘Background:Cystic echinococcosis(CE),caused by the larval stage of the complex Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato(s.l.),is a zoonotic parasitic disease with a high social burden in China.E.ortleppi is a species(formerly genotype 5 of E.granulosus s.l.)with unique epidemic areas(tropical areas),transmission patterns(mainly cattle origin),and pathological characteristics(large and small hook lengths)compared to other species that cause CE.A 19-year-old female patient in an area with no history of echinococcosis in Guizhou Province,China,was diagnosed with E.ortleppi infection in 2019.This study is to understand the source of this human E.ortleppi infection.Methods:We performed computer tomography(CT)scans,surgical operation,morphological sectioning,molecular diagnosis,phylogenetic analyses,and epidemiological investigation in Anshun City,Guizhou Province,China in 2019.Results:The patient presented with intermittent distension and pain in the upper abdomen without other abnormal symptoms.Routine blood examination results were normal.However,abdominal CT revealed a fertile cyst with a diameter of approximately 8 cm,uniform density,and a clear boundary,but without an evident cyst wall in the right lobe of the liver.The cyst was fertile,and phylogenetic analyses revealed that the isolates represented a new E.ortleppi genus haplotype.A result of 10‒14 years incubation period with indigenous infection was considered available for the case through the epidemiological survey.Conclusions:CE due to E.ortleppi infection can be confused with other diseases causing liver cysts,resulting in misdiagnosis.A transmission chain of E.ortleppi may exist or existed in the past in the previously considered nonendemic areas of echinococcosis in southwestern China.Xu Wang Aiya Zhu Hongying Cai Baixue Liu Gang Xie Rui Jiang Ji Zhang Nanzi Xie Yayi Guan Robert Bergquist Zhenghuan Wang Yang Li Weiping Wu 2021Infectious Diseases of Poverty2021,10,6:3
6A New Record of Kaloula(Amphibia: Anura: Microhylidae) in Shanghai, China显示文摘We discovered a medium-sized species of narrow-mouthed frog of the genus Kaloula in June and September 2014 during municipal surveys of amphibians in Shanghai. Three narrow-mouthed frogs were collected in city drains of the Binjiang Forest Park, Shanghai. Based on subsequent examination and morphological characters, these specimens were identified as Kaloula borealis(Barbour, 1908). The species was mainly distributed in Northern China and Korea. It is a new amphibian record for Shanghai. We found the visible differences in male secondary sexual characteristics between our specimens and Beijing specimens. 7Behavioral responses of blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur) to nonlethal human recreational disturbance显示文摘Nonlethal human recreational activities have been confirmed to have negative effect on wild animals in a number of ways,including changes in behaviors,avoidance of suitable habitats and declines in breeding success.Studies on the anti-disturbance mechanism of wild animals to human disturbance can provide valuable knowledge to the management of wild animals and the evolutionary mechanisms of behavioral adaptation to their habitats.To evaluate how blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur) would react to nonlethal human recreational disturbance,we studied their anti-disturbance strategy towards human disturbance in Suyukou National Forest Park(SNFP),Helan Mountains,Yinchuan of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.Using multinomial logistic regression models(MLRMs),we sought to answer two questions:(1) which kind of human recreational behavior would evoke the most serious anti-disturbance behaviors in blue sheep;and(2) how would various ecological factors influence the anti-disturbance strategy of blue sheep to human recreational disturbance? We collected 10 habitat and population variables and evaluated three kinds of reaction of blue sheep-no response,vigilance and flight.A total of 921 observations qualified to enter MLRMs.We found that habitat type(HT),gender(GEN),head direction(HD),visibility index(VI),and disturbance source(DS) were the five variables that significantly influenced the intensity of reactions of blue sheep.Blue sheep were more alert to tourists than to vehicles,and roads were the habitat type that caused the most intensive reaction of alertness where human disturbance was the highest.Females were more vigilant than males.Blue sheep might feel safer when staying in open habitat,and taking a front head direction provided them with the highest vigilance.Based on these results,we present suggestions to SNFP for the management of ecotourism and blue sheep conservation.JIANG TianYi WANG XiaoMing DING YouZhong LIU ZhenSheng WANG ZhengHuan 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17:2
8Ultrastable and colorful afterglow from organic luminophores in amorphous nanocomposites:Advanced anti-counterfeiting and in vivo imaging application显示文摘Special attention has been paid to the organic afterglow materials(OAM)for their fascinating properties.However,poor stability at air and complicated structure design hinder the development of OAM.Herein,sol-gel,a facile and simple technique,is employed to synthesize a series of organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposites(N1/SiO2,N2/SiO2,and N3/SiO2)by covalently linking three common aryl imides with crosslinked silica skeleton.These nanomaterials show excitation wavelength-dependent and colorful(yellow,red and green)afterglow of organic imides with long lifetime up to 1.1 s at air.Interestingly,the ultralong phosphorescence is ultrastable under various conditions:water,high temperature,UV irradiation and in vivo,due to the protection of inorganic silica.In particularly,heating to 500℃does not quench the afterglow of organic luminophore in nanocomposites,but forms new ultralong phosphorescence originated from space-conjugation of silica and carbonyl.The afterglow nanomaterials display huge advantages in the applications of advanced anti-counterfeiting and bioimaging.Qiuqin Huang Heqi Gao Shuming Yang Dan Ding Zhenghuan Lin Qidan Ling 2020Nano Research2020,13,4:2

16Recent advances in engineering iron oxide nanoparticles for effective magnetic resonance imaging显示文摘Iron oxide nanoparticle(IONP)with unique magnetic property and high biocompatibility have been widely used as magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)contrast agent(CA)for long time.However,a review which comprehensively summarizes the recent development of IONP as traditional T_(2) CA and its new application for different modality of MRI,such as T_(1) imaging,simultaneous T_(2)/T_(1) or MRI/other imaging modality,and as environment responsive CA is rare.This review starts with an investigation of direction on the development of high-performance MRI CA in both T_(2) and T_(1) modal based on quantum mechanical outer sphere and Solomon-Bloembergen-Morgan(SBM)theory.Recent rational attempts to increase the MRI contrast of IONP by adjusting the key parameters,including magnetization,size,effective radius,inhomogeneity of surrounding generated magnetic field,crystal phase,coordination number of water,electronic relaxation time,and surface modification are summarized.Besides the strategies to improve r2 or r1 values,strategies to increase the in vivo contrast efficiency of IONP have been reviewed from three different aspects,those are introducing second imaging modality to increase the imaging accuracy,endowing IONP with environment response capacity to elevate the signal difference between lesion and normal tissue,and optimizing the interface structure to improve the accumulation amount of IONP in lesion.This detailed review provides a deep understanding of recent researches on the development of high-performance IONP based MRI CAs.It is hoped to trigger deep thinking for design of next generation MRI CAs for early and accurate diagnosis.Zhenghuan Zhao Muyao Li Jie Zeng Linlin Huo Kun Liu Ruixue Wei Kaiyuan Ni Jinhao Gao 2022Bioactive Materials2022,7,6:1
