| 2 | First evidence of prey capture and meat eating by wild Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus bieti in Yunnan,China显示文摘Most extant nonhuman primates occasionally prey on fast-moving, warm-blooded animals; however, Indriidae, Lepilemuridae,and Colobinae either scavenged for meat or did not eat meat at all. Here we report six cases of animal consumptionby the snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus bieti in a wild, habituated group between 2004 and 2009 in Yunnan, China. At present,only males in an all-male unit within the study group were involved in active hunting. Such a male-biased activity may be relatedto the group structure and spatial spread of R. bieti. Two females were observed eating freshly killed birds. The findings confirmedthat R. bieti engaged in scavenging and, when hunting, employed a cranio-cervical bite to kill their prey. Meat eating islikely a nutrient maximization feeding strategy in R. bieti, especially in males. A begging behavior occurred after successful preycapture. Although begging was observed, no sharing of the meat was seen. | 3 | Quantifying the Cloud Water Resource:Methods Based on Observational Diagnosis and Cloud Model Simulation显示文摘Based on the concepts of cloud water resource(CWR)and related variables proposed in the first part of this study,this paper provides details of two methods to quantify the CWR.One is diagnostic quantification(CWR-DQ)based on satellite observations,precipitation products,and atmospheric reanalysis data;and the other is numerical quantification(CWR-NQ)based on a cloud resolving model developed at the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences(CAMS).The two methods are applied to quantify the CWR in April and August 2017 over North China,and the results are evaluated against all available observations.Main results are as follows.(1)For the CWR-DQ approach,reference cloud profiles are firstly derived based on the Cloud Sat/CALIPSO joint satellite observations for 2007–2010.The NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data in 2000–2017 are then employed to produce three-dimensional cloud fields.The budget/balance equations of atmospheric water substance are lastly used,together with precipitation observations,to retrieve CWR and related variables.It is found that the distribution and vertical structure of clouds obtained by the diagnostic method are consistent with observations.(2)For the CWR-NQ approach,it assumes that the cloud resolving model is able to describe the cloud microphysical processes completely and precisely,from which four-dimensional distributions of atmospheric water vapor,hydrometeors,and wind fields can be obtained.The data are then employed to quantify the CWR and related terms/quantities.After one-month continuous integration,the mass of atmospheric water substance becomes conserved,and the tempospatial distributions of water vapor,hydrometeors/cloud water,and precipitation are consistent with observations.(3)Diagnostic values of the difference in the transition between hydrometeors and water vapor(Cvh-Chv)and the surface evaporation(Es)are well consistent with their numerical values.(4)Correlation and bias analyses show that the diagnostic CWR contributors are well correlated with observations,and match their numerical counterparts as well,indicating that the CWR-NQ and CWR-DQ methods are reasonable.(5)Underestimation of water vapor converted from hydrometeors(Chv)is a shortcoming of the CWR-DQ method,which may be rectified by numerical quantification results or by use of advanced observations on higher spatiotemporal resolutions. | Miao CAI Yuquan ZHOU Jianzhao LIU Chao TAN Yahui TANG Qianrong MA Qi LI Jietai MAO Zhijin HU | 2020 | Journal of Meteorological Research2020,34,6: | 4 |
| 4 | Ethylene Response Factor TERF1 Enhances Glucose Sensitivity in Tobacco through Activating the Expression of Sugar-related Genes显示文摘Ethylene response factor (ERF) proteins are important plant-specific transcription factors. Increasing evidence shows that ERF proteins regulate plant pathogen resistance, abiotic stress response and plant development through interaction with different stress responsive pathways. Previously, we revealed that overexpression of TERF1 in tobacco activates a cluster gene expression through interacting with GCC box and dehydration responsive element (DRE), resulting in enhanced sensitivity to abscisic acid (ABA) and tolerance to drought, and dark green leaves of mature plants, indicating that TERF1 participates in the integration of ethylene and osmotic responses. Here we further report that overexpression of TERF1 confers sugar response in tobacco. Analysis of the novel isolated tomato TERF1 promoter provides information indicating that there are many cis-acting elements, including sugar responsive elements (SURE) and W box, suggesting that TERF1 might be sugar inducible. This prediction is confirmed by results of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction amplification, indicating that transcripts of TERF1 are accumulated in tomato seedlings after application of glucose. Further investigation indicates that the expression of TERF1 in tobacco enhances sensitivity to glucose during seed germination, root and seedling development, showing a decrease of the fresh weight and root elongation under glucose treatment. Detailed investigations provide evidence that TERF1 interacts with the sugar responsive cis-acting element SURE and activates the expression of sugar response genes, establishing the transcriptional regulation of TERF1 in sugar response. | 6 | Multi-scale three-dimensional variational data assimilation for high-resolution aerosol observations: Methodology and application显示文摘With an increasing number of air quality monitoring stations installed around the Chinese mainland,high-resolution aerosol observations become available,allowing improvements in air pollution monitoring and aerosol forecasting.However,the multi scales(especially small-scale)information included in high-resolution aerosol observations could not be effectively utilized by the traditional three-dimensional variational method(3DVAR).This study attempted to extend the traditional 3DVAR to a multi-scale 3DVAR with two iteration steps,two-scale-3DVAR(TS-3DVAR),to improve the effectiveness of assimilating high-resolution observations.In TS-3DVAR,the large-scale and small-scale components of observation information were decomposed from the original high-resolution observations using a Gaussian smoothing method and then assimilated using the corresponding large-scale or small-scale background error covariances which were derived from the partitioned background error samples.The data assimilation(DA)analysis field generated by TS-3DVAR is more accurate than 3DVAR in reproducing the field’s multi-scale characteristics,which could thus be used as the initial chemical field of the air quality model to improve aerosol forecasting.Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5μm(PM_(2.5))and 10.0μm(PM_(10)) from the surface air quality monitoring stations from November 01 to November 30,2018 at 00:00 were assimilated daily to verify the effects of TS-3DVAR and 3DVAR on the aerosol analysis and forecast accuracy.The results showed that TS-3DVAR better constrained both large-scale and small-scale,especially the spatial wavelengths in a range of 54-216 km and those above 351 km.The average power spectra of the TS-3DVAR assimilation increment in the two wavelength ranges were 71.70%and 35.33%higher than those of 3DVAR.As a result,the TS-3DVAR was more effective than 3DVAR in improving the accuracy of the initial chemical field,and thereby the forecasting capability for PM_(2.5).In the initial chemical field,the 30-day average correlation coefficient(Corr)of PM_(2.5) of TS-3DVAR was 0.052(6.12%)higher than that of 3DVAR,and the root mean square error(RMSE)of TS-3DVAR was 3.446μg m^(−3)(16.4%)lower than that of 3DVAR.For the forecasting capability for PM_(2.5) mass concentration,the 30-day average Corr of TS-3DVAR during the 0-24 hour forecast period was 0.025(5.08%)higher than that of 3DVAR,and the average RMSE was 2.027μg m^(−3)(4.85%)lower.The positive effect of TS-3DVAR on the improvement of forecasting capability can last for more than 24 h. | Zengliang ZANG Yanfei LIANG Wei YOU Yi LI Xiaobin PAN Zhijin LI | 2022 | Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,10: | 2 |
| 7 | 多源卫星高度计新融合产品的研发与评估显示文摘卫星高度计在海洋环流观测、海平面变化分析和海洋环境预报等多个研究和业务领域得到广泛应用.当前在轨运行的高度计卫星已达5颗(Sentinel-3A、Jason-3、Cryosat-2、Saral/Alti Ka以及HY-2A),观测精度不断提高,但卫星高度计融合产品的有效分辨率(可分辨海面涡旋的最小尺度)仍需进一步提升.本研究以变分原理为基础,改进背景场、背景误差协方差矩阵以及观测误差,建立一种新的多源卫星高度计资料融合方法.以南海及其附近海域为目标区域,在格距为0.08°的规则网格上,融合所有在轨运行的5颗卫星高度计的沿轨数据,得到逐日融合产品.评估分析表明:新方法得到的融合产品的有效分辨率达到125 km左右,与国际上广泛应用的AVISO产品相比(格距0.25°,有效分辨率240 km),有效分辨率提高近一倍,融合产品的精度进一步提高,可用于描述更小尺度的海洋环流结构. | 刘磊 蒋星亮 费建芳 Zhijin Li | 2020 | 科学通报2020,65,18: | 2 |

| 13 | Clinical value of multi-slice helical CT angiography in diagnosis of cerebral vascular diseases显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the clinical value of multi-slice helical CT angiography (MSCTA) in diagnosis of cerebral vascular diseases. Methods: 52 patients with cerebral vascular diseases were examined with GE Light Speed 4-slice and 16-slice helical CT. Pitch: 0.5–3, slice thickness: 0.625–1.25 mm, adult injection dosage: 90–100 mL, children injection dos- age: 2 mL/kg, injection rate: 2.5–4.0 mL/s, delay time: 15–22 s. Intelligent track scan (Smart prep Rx) were adopted in parts of these cases. Three-dimensional cerebral vascular images were processed at ADW 3.1 and ADW 4.2 workstation. Results: MSCTA could clearly display spacious anatomic details of cerebral aneurysm, including its origin, size, neck width, and trend etc. MSCTA results of 19 cases were consistent with those of operations. The diameter of the smallest cerebral aneurysm shown in our research was about 3 mm. As a non-invasive examination, MSCTA could also be applied in post-operational evaluation of cerebral aneurysm by observing the location of silver clip and the distant vessels. Besides, MSCTA could be used to diagnose arteriovenous malformation and moyamoya disease. Of all the three-dimentional imaging methods, volume rendering (VR) is the best means to display the cerebral vascular diseases. | 16 | Comparisons of Three-Dimensional Variational Data Assimilation and Model Output Statistics in Improving Atmospheric Chemistry Forecasts显示文摘Atmospheric chemistry models usually perform badly in forecasting wintertime air pollution because of their uncertainties. Generally, such uncertainties can be decreased effectively by techniques such as data assimilation(DA) and model output statistics(MOS). However, the relative importance and combined effects of the two techniques have not been clarified. Here,a one-month air quality forecast with the Weather Research and Forecasting-Chemistry(WRF-Chem) model was carried out in a virtually operational setup focusing on Hebei Province, China. Meanwhile, three-dimensional variational(3 DVar) DA and MOS based on one-dimensional Kalman filtering were implemented separately and simultaneously to investigate their performance in improving the model forecast. Comparison with observations shows that the chemistry forecast with MOS outperforms that with 3 DVar DA, which could be seen in all the species tested over the whole 72 forecast hours. Combined use of both techniques does not guarantee a better forecast than MOS only, with the improvements and degradations being small and appearing rather randomly.
