2Beneficial effects of nutritional supplements on intestinal epithelial barrier functions in experimental colitis models in vivo显示文摘Acute and chronic colitis affect a huge proportion of the population world-wide.The etiology of colitis cases can be manifold,and diet can significantly affect onset and outcome of colitis.While many forms of acute colitis are easily treatable,chronic forms of colitis such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease(summarized as inflammatory bowel diseases)are multifactorial with poorly understood pathogenesis.Inflammatory bowel diseases are characterized by exacerbated immune responses causing epithelial dysfunction and bacterial translocation.There is no cure and therapies aim at reducing inflammation and restoring intestinal barrier function.Unfortunately,most drugs can have severe side effects.Changes in diet and inclusion of nutritional supplements have been extensively studied in cell culture and animal models,and some supplements have shown promising results in clinical studies.Most of these nutritional supplements including vitamins,fatty acids and phytochemicals reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and have shown beneficial effects during experimental colitis in rodents induced by dextran sulphate sodium or 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid,which remain the gold standard in pre-clinical colitis research.Here,we summarize the mechanisms through which such nutritional supplements contribute to epithelial barrier stabilization.Hilda Vargas-Robles Karla Fabiola Castro-Ochoa Alí Francisco Citalán-Madrid Michael Schnoor 2019World Journal of Gastroenterology2019,25,30:5
3Current understanding of the metabolism of micronutrients in chronic alcoholic liver disease显示文摘Alcoholic liver disease(ALD)remains an important health problem worldwide.Perturbation of micronutrients has been broadly reported to be a common characteristic in patients with ALD,given the fact that micronutrients often act as composition or coenzymes of many biochemical enzymes responsible for the inflammatory response,oxidative stress,and cell proliferation.Mapping the metabolic pattern and the function of these micronutrients is a prerequisite before targeted intervention can be delivered in clinical practice.Recent years have registered a significant improvement in our understanding of the role of micronutrients on the pathogenesis and progression of ALD.However,how and to what extent these micronutrients are involved in the pathophysiology of ALD remains largely unknown.In the current study,we provide a review of recent studies that investigated the imbalance of micronutrients in patients with ALD with a focus on zinc,iron,copper,magnesium,selenium,vitamin D and vitamin E,and determine how disturbances in micronutrients relates to the pathophysiology of ALD.Overall,zinc,selenium,vitamin D,and vitamin E uniformly exhibited a deficiency,and iron demonstrated an elevated trend.While for copper,both an elevation and deficiency were observed from existing literature.More importantly,we also highlight several challenges in terms of low sample size,study design discrepancies,sample heterogeneity across studies,and the use of machine learning approaches.Jing Wu Qing-Hua Meng 2020World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,31:4
4Neuroprotection and antioxidants显示文摘Ischemia as a serious neurodegenerative disorder causes together with reperfusion injury many changes in nervous tissue. Most of the neuronal damage is caused by complex of biochemical reactions and substantial processes, such as protein agregation, reactions of free radicals, insufficient blood supply, glutamate excitotoxicity, and oxidative stress. The result of these processes can be apoptotic or necrotic cell death and it can lead to an irreversible damage. Therefore, neuroprotection and prevention of the neurodegeneration are highly important topics to study. There are several approaches to prevent the ischemic damage. 5Health aspects of peanuts as an outcome of its chemical composition显示文摘Peanut is an energy dense food item and it contains a substantial amount of fat,proteins,carbohydrate,both fat soluble and water soluble vitamins,minerals and phytochemicals.Peanuts are consumed worldwide due to its high nutritional value and pleasant or unique flavor after roasting or boiling.The lipid,protein and carbohydrate not only provide energy,but also provide essential nutrients for normal body functions such as body fat and muscle buildup.Vitamins are needed for normal cell function,growth,development,disease prevention and act as coenzymes during the production of energy.Due to the high nutrient contents of peanuts,they have been used to combat malnutrition in most developing countries.Epidemiologic studies have associated nut consumption with a reduced incidence of cardiovascular heart diseases and gallstones in both genders and diabetes in women.Limited evidence also suggests beneficial effects on hypertension,cancer,and inflammation.The health risk associated with peanut consumption is allergy in developed countries.The review discusses the health aspects,including allergy,of peanut consumption as they related to the chemical composition of peanuts using literatures published in past two decades with exceptions of a few older articles.Rabiatu Bonku Jianmei Yu 2020Food Science and Human Wellness2020,9,1:2

7Benefiting others and self: Production of vitamins in plants显示文摘Vitamins maintain growth and development in humans, animals, and plants. Because plants serve as essential producers of vitamins, increasing the vitamin contents in plants has become a goal of crop breeding worldwide. Here, we begin with a summary of the functions of vitamins. We then review the achievements to date in elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying how vitamins are synthesized, transported, and regulated in plants. We also stress the exploration of variation in vitamins by the use of forward genetic approaches, such as quantitative trait locus mapping and genome-wide association studies. 8Changes in the nutritional status of nine vitamins in patients with esophageal cancer during chemotherapy显示文摘BACKGROUND Many studies have investigated the relationships between vitamins and esophageal cancer(EC).Most of these studies focused on the roles of vitamins in the prevention and treatment of EC,and few studies have examined the changes in vitamin nutritional status and their influencing factors before and after chemotherapy for EC.Chemotherapy may have a considerable effect on EC patients’vitamin levels and hematological indicators.AIM To research the nutritional status of multiple vitamins in EC patients during chemotherapy and to assess its clinical significance.METHODS EC patients admitted to our center from July 2017 to September 2020 were enrolled in this study.Serum concentrations of nine vitamins(A,D,E,B9,B12,B1,C,B2 and B6),hemoglobin,total protein,albumin,blood calcium,blood phosphorus concentrations and body mass index(BMI)were measured in all EC patients.The changes in nine vitamins,hematological indicators and BMI were compared before and after two cycles of chemotherapy.The possible influential factors were analyzed.RESULTS In total,203 EC patients receiving chemotherapy were enrolled in this study.Varying degrees of vitamin A,D,C and B2 deficiency and weight loss were found in these patients,and the proportions of vitamin B2 and vitamin C deficiencies increased significantly after chemotherapy(both P<0.05).Serum concentrations of vitamins A,C,B2 and B6 and BMI before and after chemotherapy were statistically significant(all P<0.05).Multivariate analysis showed that vitamin A levels significantly differed between male and female EC patients,whereas vitamin D concentration significantly differed in EC patients in different stages(all P<0.05).Correlations were observed between the changes in serum concentrations of vitamin A and C before and after two cycles chemotherapy and the change in BMI(P<0.05).Hemoglobin,total protein,serum albumin and blood calcium concentrations significantly decreased in EC patients after chemotherapy(all P<0.05),while the blood phosphorus level significantly increased after chemotherapy(P<0.05).Using the difference in vitamin concentrations as the independent variables and the difference in BMI as the dependent variable,logistic regression analysis revealed statistically significant differences for vitamin A,vitamin D and vitamin C(F=5.082,P=0.002).CONCLUSION Vitamin A,D,C and B2 were mainly deficient in patients with EC during chemotherapy.Multivitamin supplementation may help to improve the nutritional status,chemotherapy tolerance and efficacy.Lan-Qing Liang Ling-Ling Meng Bo-Ning Cai Ze-Ping Cui Na Ma Le-Hui Du Wei Yu Bao-Lin Qu Sheng-Qiang Feng Fang Liu 2021World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,19:2

10Asymptomatic malaria parasitemia does not induce additional oxidative stress in pregnant women of South East Nigeria显示文摘Objective:To determine the relationship between asymptomatic malaria parasitemia and some oxidative stress parameters in pregnant Nigerian women.Methods:This is a cross-sectional study involving 130 normal pregnant women at various trimesters,who were attending antenatal clinic at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital(UNTH) and Kenechukwu Specialist Hospital in Enugu.A comparable group(control),made of 30 non pregnant women was also recruited.After a 24 hour dietary recall,serum levels of vitamin A,C and malondialdehyde(MDA) were determined by colorimetric method,while vitamin E was determined by absorptiometric method.Results:There were no statistically significant differences in age,parity,estimated calorie,vitamins A,C and E intake between the pregnant and non pregnant groups(P>0.05).The serum level of the vitamins(umol/L) and MDA(umol/L) in control,1st,2nd and 3rd trimesters respectively were:(l)Vitamin A:1.6±0.36 vs 0.6±0.26 vs 0.62±0.33 vs 0.46±0.21(P<0.0001);(2) Vitamin C:75.65±14.15 vs 62.97±24.4 vs 37.85±15.19 vs 28.94±8.52(P<0.0001);(3) Vitamin E:3.01±1.32 vs 3.45±2.01 vs 9.36±2.75 vs 9.82±2.97(P<0.0001);(4) MDA:1.42±0.02 vs 1.61±0.02 vs 1.79±0.02 vs 2.03±0.05(P<0.0001).However,there were no significant changes in the serum level of the vitamins and MDA between the positive and the negative parasitemia subjects(P>0.05). 11Effects of vitamin supplementation on inflammatory markers and psychological wellbeing among distressed women:a randomized controlled trial显示文摘Background: Multivitamins are a popular supplement taken to promote physical and mental health.During periods of stress, they may have a protective role for health and wellbeing, although the current evidence of their efficacy is mixed.Objective: To determine whether multivitamin supplementation impacts psychological and inflammatory markers of women who are experiencing psychological distress.Design, setting, participants and interventions: An 8-week randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess changes in both psychological state and pro-inflammatory markers of patients receiving multivitamins or placebo. The sample comprised women who reported elevated psychological distress in the previous 4 weeks.Main outcome measures: Psychological state was assessed using Spielberger's State-Trait Personality Inventory to assess anxiety, curiosity, depression and anger. Pro-inflammatory markers comprised interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-5, IL-6, tumour necrosis factor(TNF)-α and TNF-p.Results: Improvements across time were observed for all psychological measures and cytokines, except IL-5, but were independent of the active intervention. Only TNF-β demonstrated a significant differential change between groups over the course of the intervention, in favour of multivitamin supplementation(active group mean rank decreased from 11.1 to 7.1; placebo group mean rank decreased from 8.9 to 7.8).Conclusion: The results suggest that administration of multivitamins was not effective in improving psychological state. 12Nutritional and medical food therapies for diabetic retinopathy显示文摘Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is a form of microangiopathy.Reducing oxidative stress in the mitochondria and cell membranes decreases ischemic injury and end-organ damage to the retina.New approaches are needed,which reduce the risk and improve the outcomes of DR while complementing current therapeutic approaches.Homocysteine(Hcy)elevation and oxidative stress are potential therapeutic targets in DR.Common genetic polymorphisms such as those of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR),increase Hcy and DR risk and severity.Patients with DR have high incidences of deficiencies of crucial vitamins,minerals,and related compounds,which also lead to elevation of Hcy and oxidative stress.Addressing the effects of the MTHFR polymorphism and addressing comorbid deficiencies and insufficiencies reduce the impact and severity of the disease.This approach provides safe and simple strategies that support conventional care and improve outcomes.Suboptimal vitamin co-factor availability also impairs the release of neurotrophic and neuroprotective growth factors.Collectively,this accounts for variability in presentation and response of DR to conventional therapy.Fortunately,there are straightforward recommendations for addressing these issues and supporting traditional treatment plans.We have reviewed the literature for nutritional interventions that support conventional therapies to reduce disease risk and severity.Optimal combinations of vitamins B1,B2,B6,L-methylfolate,methylcobalamin(B12),C,D,natural vitamin E complex,lutein,zeaxanthin,alpha-lipoic acid,and n-acetylcysteine are identified for protecting the retina and choroid.Certain medical foods have been successfully used as therapy for retinopathy.Recommendations based on this review and our clinical experience are developed for clinicians to use to support conventional therapy for DR.DR from both type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)have similar retinal findings and responses to nutritional therapies.Ce Shi Peng Wang Shriya Airen Craig Brown Zhiping Liu Justin H.Townsend Jianhua Wang Hong Jiang 2020Eye and Vision2020,7,1:1
13Biochemical and Thermal Analysis of Spirulina Biomass through FTIR, TGA, CHN显示文摘Spirulina is a sort of algae that grows in both fresh and seawater.It is considered the Earth’s most nutritionally dense food.Certain claims about Spirulina’s beneficial health properties are attributed to the relatively high protein content of the cells.Spirulina’s lipid,fatty acid profile,and biochemical composition have received little attention.The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature and decomposition of spirulina biomass at various temperatures.In the present investigation,Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy,thermogravimetric analysis,and elemental analysis were used to study spirulina biomass biochemical characteristics.The optimal content of spirulina protein,lipid,and the amino acid was identified and reported.In this study,the various frequency ranges corresponding to functional groups are evaluated and reported.Spirulina FT-IR spectra were recorded and reported at different frequency ranges from 3870–3448 cm−1 to 695–545 cm−1.FTIR studies for spirulina biomass affirmed the occurrence of–OH,–COOH,NH,C–H,and C=O groups.Protein(3453 and 1645 cm−1)and carbohydrate(1032 and 1033 cm−1)were the main components with distinct IR spectra fingerprint characteristics.Results indicate that Spirulina sp.biomass is viable green energy and the biggest protein source.The mechanism underlying the high rate of protein accumulation of spirulina may aid in not only elucidating the biochemistry but also in modifying the chemical composition and strain selection for the production of specific chemicals and products.Ruma Arora Soni K.Sudhakar R.S.Rana 2021Energy Engineering2021,118,4:0

15Embracing cancer immunotherapy with vital micronutrients显示文摘Immunotherapy is now commonly prescribed to cancer patients,but autoimmune-related adverse events are considerable.For severe,life-threatening side effects,cessation of therapy seems unavoidable,let alone intensive medical care required for patching up the adverse events.Even without serious adverse events,the response rates are too low and various combinatory regimens have been tried.However,toxicities are also added on,unless the adjuvant agents have remarkably few side effects.Actually,micronutrients are usually taken by a majority of cancer patients as nutritional support or to boost the immune function,let alone hoping to counteract treatment side effects.Recent studies have shown that combinations of micronutrients exert pleiotropic effects in controlling tumor growth and metastasis by modulating the tumor microenvironment,enhancing gut microbiota immune functions,and providing adjunct nutritional support to micronutrient deficient cancer patients.A higher than recommended dietary allowance micronutrient dose is proposed to reduce the toxic free radicals generated as a result of immunotherapy and tumor metabolism.This is not only helpful for managing treatment side effects but also enhancing treatment efficacy.As micronutrient supplementation is also useful to improve patients’quality of life,prolong survival,and sustain compliance to immunotherapy,further investigations are mandatory.Raymond C-F Yuen Shiu-Ying Tsao 2021World Journal of Clinical Oncology2021,12,9:0
16Plant-derived natural compounds in the treatment of arsenic-induced toxicity显示文摘Arsenic toxicity,imposed mainly by arsenic-contaminated groundwater,is considered a critical threat to global communal health,as there is no specific and proven conventional therapy for chronic arsenic toxicity,i.e.,arsenicosis,which is an insidious global public health menace affecting 50 countries.Alternative options should,therefore,be explored for the mitigation of arsenicosis.Literature survey reveals several natural compounds from plants possess significant protective efficacy against arsenic toxicity in chiefly preclinical and few clinical investigations.The studies on the ameliorative effects of plant-derived natural compounds against arsenic toxicity published in the last 25 years are collated.Forty-eight plant-based natural compounds possess alleviative effects on experimental arsenic-induced toxicity in animals,six of which have been reported to be clinically effective in humans.A potential nutraceutical or therapeutic candidate against arsenicosis for humans may thus be developed with the help of recent advancements in research in this area,along with the currently available treatments.Sanjib Bhattacharya 2023Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2023,13,9:0

19Basic nutrient compositions of the larva of Raphia Palm Weevil显示文摘In many developing and underdeveloped economy,many people live below the poverty line.The cost of food with essential nutrients are relatively high and consequently scarcely affordable to low income earners.Unfortunately,certain nutrient sources can beneglected by local people,and thus encourage the danger of species extinction.This study was carried out to determine the basic nutrient compositions of the larvae of Raphia Palm Weevils.Nutritional components such as the proximate,mineral and vitamincompositions were determined.Proximate analysis of the sample was carried out according to standard methods as described in AOAC.Mineral compositions were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.Vitamins were assayed using standard colorimetric and titration methods.The results show relatively high mean moisture content,39.95±0.95%;indicating that the bulk of the larvae constitute water.Mean concentrations of crude protein,crude fibre and crude fat(23.48±1.13%,13.18±0.32%and 17.38±0.49%)were high.Mineral analysis(mg/100g)revealed very high levels of calcium,221.24±0.59;magnesium,56.88±0.16;iron,18.70±0.76;zinc,15.14±0.05;potassium,8.77±0.08 and sodium,6.72±0.14.The larva was found to be rich in vitamin C,440.00±39.66 mg/100g;vitamin A,15.74±1.08 mg/100g and vitamin B6,72.75±4.75 mg/100g;with a low level of vitamin E,2.59±0.14 mg/100g;implying that the larva could be good supplements for these nutrients.Linda N.Adobeze Victor H.A.Enemor 2022Food Therapy and Health Care2022,4,1:0
20Benfotiamine supplementation prevents oxidative stress in anterior tibialis muscle and heart显示文摘Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of oral supplementation with benfotiamine on oxidative stress in the liver, heart and muscles of endurance-trained mice.Methods: Twenty-five male BALB/c mice were allocated to the following treatment groups: standard diet and sedentary activity(Sta–Sed), benfotiamine–supplemented diet and sedentary activity(Ben–Sed),standard diet and training activity(Sta–Tr) and benfotiamine–supplemented diet and training activity(Ben–Tr). The training comprised 6 weeks of endurance swimming training. The concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS), carbonylated proteins, total thiols and non-protein thiols was analyzed in the liver, heart and tibialis anterior muscle.Results: In the muscle, TBARS concentration in the Sta–Sed group was higher than that in other groups;in the heart, TBARS concentration in the Sta–Sed and Ben–Tr groups was higher than that in the Ben–Sed group. The carbonyl content of the muscle tissues was higher in the Sta–Sed group than in both supplemented groups. In liver, the carbonyl content was lower in the Ben–Sed group than in the Sta–Sed group.The level of total thiols was lower in the Ben–Sed group than in the Sta–Tr group. In the heart, the level of total thiols was higher in the Ben–Sed group than in the Ben–Tr group. The concentration of non-protein thiols in the muscle was higher in the Ben–Sed group than in the Ben–Tr group, whereas in the heart, concentration of non-protein thiols of Sta–Tr group was lower than that of Sta–Sed group.Conclusion: The results show that benfotiamine is an efficient antioxidant for the anterior tibialis muscle and heart;however, swimming training did not alter redox status.Alisson de Carvalho Goncalves Einy Jéssika Siqueira Moreira Guilherme Vannucchi Portari 2019Journal of Integrative Medicine2019,17,6:0
