| 2 | Genetic variants involved in gallstone formation and capsaicin metabolism,and the risk of gallbladder cancer in Chilean women显示文摘AIM:To determine the effects of genetic variants associated with gallstone formation and capsaicin (a pungent component of chili pepper) metabolism on the risk of gallbladder cancer (GBC).METHODS: A total of 57 patients with GBC, 119 patients with gallstones, and 70 controls were enrolled in this study. DNA was extracted from their blood or paraffi n block sample using standard commercial kits. The statuses of the genetic variants were assayed using Taqman SNP Genotyping Assays or Custom Taqman SNP Genotyping Assays.RESULTS:The non-ancestral T/T genotype of apolipoprotein B rs693 polymorphism was associated with a decreased risk of GBC (OR:0.14,95% CI:0.03-0.63). | 3 | X-ray-activated long persistent phosphors featuring strong UVC afterglow emissions显示文摘Phosphors emitting visible and near-infrared persistent luminescence have been explored extensively owing to their unusual properties and commercial interest in their applications such as glow-in-the-dark paints,optical information storage,and in vivo bioimaging.However,no persistent phosphor that features emissions in the ultraviolet C range(200–280 nm)has been known to exist so far.Here,we demonstrate a strategy for creating a new generation of persistent phosphor that exhibits strong ultraviolet C emission with an initial power density over 10 milliwatts per square meter and an afterglow of more than 2 h.Experimental characterizations coupled with first-principles calculations have revealed that structural defects associated with oxygen introduction-induced anion vacancies in fluoride elpasolite can function as electron traps,which capture and store a large number of electrons triggered by Xray irradiation.Notably,we show that the ultraviolet C afterglow intensity of the yielded phosphor is sufficiently strong for sterilization.Our discovery of this ultraviolet C afterglow opens up new avenues for research on persistent phosphors,and it offers new perspectives on their applications in terms of sterilization,disinfection,drug release,cancer treatment,anti-counterfeiting,and beyond. | Yan-Min Yang Zhi-Yong Li Jun-Ying Zhang Yue Lu Shao-Qiang Guo Qing Zhao Xin Wang Zi-Jun Yong Hong Li Ju-Ping Ma Yoshihiro Kuroiwa Chikako Moriyoshi Li-Li Hu Li-Yan Zhang Li-Rong Zheng Hong-Tao Sun | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 7 |
| 4 | Diagnostic and therapeutic application of noncoding RNAs for hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Micro RNAs(mi RNAs) are small,noncoding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression posttranscriptionally,targeting thousands of messenger RNAs. Long noncoding RNAs(lnc RNAs),another class of noncoding RNAs,have been determined to be also involved in transcription regulation and translation of target genes. Since deregulated expression levels or functions of miR NAs and lncR NAs in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) are frequently observed,clinical use of noncoding RNAs for novel diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the management of HCCs is highly and emergently e xpe c t e d. H e r e,we s ummar iz e r e c e nt f indings regarding deregulated mi RNAs and lnc RNAs for their potential clinical use as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of HCC. Specifically,we emphasize the deregulated expression levels of such noncoding RNAs in patients' sera as noninvasive biomarkers,a field that requires urgent improvement in the clinical surveillance of HCC. Since nucleotide-based strategies are being applied to clinical therapeutics,we further summarize clinical and preclinical trials using oligonucleotides involving the use of miR NAs and small interfering RNAs against HCC as novel therapeutics. | 6 | Enzyme-digested Colla Corii Asini(E’jiao) prevents hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death and accelerates amyloid beta clearance in neuronal-like PC12 cells显示文摘As an aging-associated degenerative disease,Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the deposition of amyloid beta(Aβ),oxidative stress,inflammation,dysfunction and loss of cholinergic neurons.Colla Corii Asini(CCA)is a traditional Chinese medicine which has been used for feebleness-related diseases and anti-aging.CCA might delay aging-induced degenerative changes in neurons.In the present study,we evaluated antioxidant activity,cytoprotective effects,and Aβremovability of enzyme-digested Colla Corii Asini(CCAD).Oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC)activity assay showed that,as compared to gelatins from the skin of porcine,bovine and cold water fish,CCA exhibited the highest ORAC activity.The ORAC activity of CCA and CCAD was increased gradually by the length of time in storage.Ultrastructure analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed that among CCA manufactured in 2008,2013,2017 and gelatin from cold water fish skin,CCA manufactured in 2008 presented the smoothest surface structure.We further tested the protective effects of CCAD(manufactured in 2008)and enzyme-digested gelatin from cold water fish skin(FGD)on hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)-induced cell death in nerve growth factor-differentiated neuronal-like PC12 cells.Presto blue assay showed that both FGD and CCAD at 0.5 mg/m L increased cell viability in H2O2-treated neuronal-like PC12 cells.The protection of CCAD was significantly superior to that of FGD.Acetylcholinesterase(Ach E)assay showed that both FGD and CCAD inhibited Ach E activity in nerve growth factor-differentiated neuronal-like PC12 cells to 89.1%and 74.5%of that in non-treated cells,respectively.The data suggest that CCAD might be able to increase the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.Although CCAD inhibited Ach E activity in neuronal-like PC12 cells,CCAD prevented H2O2-induced abnormal deterioration of Ach E.ELISA and neprilysin activity assay results indicated that CCAD reduced amyloid beta accumulation and increased neprilysin activity in Aβ1–42-treated neuronal-like PC12 cells,suggesting that CCAD can enhance Aβclearance.Our results suggest that CCA might be useful for preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease. | Li Xiao Feng Liao Ryoji Ide Tetsuro Horie Yumei Fan Chikako Saiki Nobuhiko Miwa | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,12: | 6 |

| 8 | Stem cell therapy for central nerve system injuries: glial cells hold the key显示文摘Mammalian adult central nerve system(CNS) injuries are devastating because of the intrinsic difficulties for effective neuronal regeneration. The greatest problem to be overcome for CNS recovery is the poor regeneration of neurons and myelin-forming cells, oligodendrocytes. Endogenous neural progenitors and transplanted exogenous neuronal stem cells can be the source for neuronal regeneration. However, because of the harsh local microenvironment, they usually have very low efficacy for functional neural regeneration which cannot compensate for the loss of neurons and oligodendrocytes. Glial cells(including astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes and NG2 glia) are the majority of cells in CNS that provide support and protection for neurons. Inside the local microenvironment, glial cells largely influence local and transplanted neural stem cells survival and fates. | 13 | Research on stress-induced apoptosis of natural killer cells and the alteration of their killing activity in mouse liver显示文摘AIM:To investigate the stress-induced apoptosis of natural killer(NK)cells and the changes in their killing activity in mouse livers.METHODS:A restraint stress model was established in mice.Flow cytometry was employed to measure the percentage of NK cells and the changes in their absolute number in mouse liver.The cytotoxicity of hepatic and splenic NK cells was assessed against YAC-1 target cells via a 4 h 51Cr-release assay.RESULTS:The restraint stress stimulation induced the apoptosis of NK cells in the liver and the spleen,which decreased the cell number.The number and percentage of NK cells in the spleen decreased.However,the number of NK cells in the liver decreased,whereas the percentage of NK cells was significantly increased.The apoptosis of NK cells increased gradually with prolonged stress time,and the macrophage-1(Mac-1)+NK cells were more susceptible to apoptosis than Mac-1-NK cells.Large numbers of Mac-1-NK cells in the liver,which are more resistant to stress-induced apoptosis,were observed than the Mac-1-NK cells in the spleen.The stress stimulation diminished the killing activity of NK cells in the spleen was significantly decreased,but the retention of numerous Mac-1-NK cells in the liver maintained the killing ability.CONCLUSION:Significant stress-induced apoptosis was observed among Mac-1+NK cells,but not Mac-1-NK cells in the mouse liver.Stress stimulation markedly decreased the killing activity of NK cells in the spleen but remained unchanged in the liver. | Zhen Ma Yang Liu Xin Zhou Hai-Long Yu Ming-Qi Li Chikako Tomiyama-Miyaji Toru Abo Xue-Feng Bai | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,37: | 2 |
