| 1 | Transdermal drug delivery systems in diabetes management: A review显示文摘Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease in which there is an insufficient production of insulin by the pancreas, or the insulin produced is unable to be utilized effectively by the body. Diabetes affects more than 415 million people globally and is estimated to strike about 642 million people in 2040. The WHO reported that diabetes will become the seventh biggest cause of mortality in 2030. Insulin injection and oral hypoglycemic agents remain the primary treatments in diabetes management. These often present with poor patient compliance. However, over the last decade, transdermal systems in diabetes management have gained increasing attention and emerged as a potential hope in diabetes management owing to the advantages that they offer as compared to invasive injection and oral dosage forms. This review presents the recent advances and developments in transdermal research to achieve better diabetes management. Different technologies and approaches have been explored and applied to the transdermal systems to optimize diabetes management. Studies have shown that these transdermal systems demonstrate higher bioavailability compared to oral administration due to the avoidance of first-pass hepatic metabolism and a sustained drug release pattern. Besides that, transdermal systems have the advantage of reducing dosing frequency as drugs are released at a predetermined rate and control blood glucose level over a prolonged time, contributing to better patient compliance. | 4 | Palliative surgery for Krukenberg tumors—12-year experience and review of the literature显示文摘AIM To determine the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing palliative surgery for Krukenberg tumors,including disease presentation,outcomes,and prognostic factors.METHODS This was a retrospective clinical study of all patients who underwent palliative surgery for Krukenberg tumors between January 2004 and December 2015.Patient information was obtained from inpatient and outpatient case notes as well as the hospital electronic records.Patients who underwent potential y curative resection,and patients with Krukenberg tumors who did not undergo surgery were also excluded from the study.Palliative surgery was defined as those performed for either alleviation of symptoms or for asymptomatic patients for whom surgical removal of the tumors were deemed necessary following a multidisciplinary consensus.Tumors were diagnosed pre-operatively by computed tomography scans and all had histologic confirmation of the surgical specimens.RESULTS Over the study duration,38 female patients underwent palliative surgery for Krukenberg tumors at our institution.Mean age was 54.2±11.7 years.The colon was the most frequent primary source of metastases(n=21)followed by the stomach(n=4).Prophylactic palliative surgery was performed for eight(21.1%)asymptomatic patients.Median post-operative length of stay was 8 d(IQR 6-12 d).Five patients(13.2%)experienced postoperative complications,although high grade morbidity was only seen in one patient(2.6%).Median overall survival from surgery was 17 mo(95%CI:12.1-21.9)at a median follow-up duration of 12 mo(IQR 8-17mo).The median survival was shorter for patients who underwent emergency surgery,younger patients,those with a colorectal primary,larger tumors,or synchronous peritoneal or hepatic metastases.CONCLUSION Pal iative surgery for Krukenberg tumors can be performed safely with acceptable complication rates.Bilateral oophorectomy should be performed to prevent the risk of symptomatic contralateral tumors. | Isaac Seow-En Gwen Hwarng Grace Hwei Ching Tan Leonard Ming Li Ho Melissa Ching Ching Teo | 2018 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2018,9,1: | 5 |
| 5 | The fundamental performance of FAST with 19-beam receiver at L band显示文摘The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope(FAST) has passed national acceptance and finished one pilot cycle of ‘Shared-Risk’ observations. It will start formal operation soon. In this context, this paper describes testing results of key fundamental parameters for FAST, aiming to provide basic support for observation and data reduction of FAST for scientific researchers. The 19-beam receiver covering 1.05–1.45 GHz was utilized for most of these observations. The fluctuation in electronic gain of the system is better than 1% over 3.5 hours, enabling enough stability for observations. Pointing accuracy,aperture efficiency and system temperature are three key parameters for FAST. The measured standard deviation of pointing accuracy is 7.9′′, which satisfies the initial design of FAST. When zenith angle is less than 26.4°, the aperture efficiency and system temperature around 1.4 GHz are ~0.63 and less than 24 K for central beam, respectively. The sensitivity and stability of the 19-beam backend are confirmed to satisfy expectation by spectral HI observations toward NGC 672 and polarization observations toward 3 C 286. | 6 | Near‑Instantaneously Self‑Healing Coating toward Stable and Durable Electromagnetic Interference Shielding显示文摘Durable electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding is highly desired,as electromagnetic pollution is a great concern for electronics’stable performance and human health.Although a superhydrophobic surface can extend the service lifespan of EMI shielding materials,degradation of its protection capability and insufficient self-healing are troublesome issues due to unavoidable physical/chemical damages under long-term application conditions.Here,we report,for the first time,an instantaneously self-healing approach via microwave heating to achieve durable shielding performance.First,a hydrophobic 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane(POTS)layer was coated on a polypyrrole(PPy)-modified fabric(PPy@POTS),enabling protection against the invasion of water,salt solution,and corrosive acidic and basic solutions.Moreover,after being damaged,the POTS layer can,for the first time,be instantaneously self-healed via microwave heating for a very short time,i.e.,4 s,benefiting from the intense thermal energy generated by PPy under electromagnetic wave radiation.This self-healing ability is also repeatable even after intentionally severe plasma etching,which highlights the great potential to achieve robust and durable EMI shielding applications.Significantly,this approach can be extended to other EMI shielding materials where heat is a triggering stimulus for healing thin protection layers.We envision that this work could provide insights into fabricating EMI shielding materials with durable performance for portable and wearable devices,as well as for human health care. | Lihua Zou Chuntao Lan Songlin Zhang Xianhong Zheng Zhenzhen Xu Changlong Li Li Yang Fangtao Ruan Swee Ching Tan | 2021 | Nano-Micro Letters2021,13,11: | 3 |
