In situ real-time study buckling behavior of boron nitride nanotubes with axial compression by TEM显示文摘Boron nitride nanotubes(BNNTs)were treated as brittle materials and could be used to enhance the composite mechanical properties. Many approaches were used to verify the theoretical prediction experimentally, but how to in situ real-time characterize nanomechanical properties of BNNTs was still interested to the researchers. An in situ transmission electron microscopy(TEM)equipped with a force transducer holder had been used to study the structure evolution behavior of BNNTs with axial compression.Real-time video and the force transducer had been used synchronously to record the whole force loading process where the mechanical deformation of BNNT began, buckled and ended with fracture. An in dividual ultrathin BNNT was employed to con duct the loading test. The results showed that the elastic deformation happened on the BNNT.Young's modulus?1.05-1.37 Tpa and elasticity coefficient?198.7-255.9 N/m of BNNT were calculated by Euler formula and Hooker's law, respectively.Guoxin Chen Huanming Lu Junfeng Cui Haitao Yu Bo Wang Yan Liu He Li Nan Jiang 2019Chinese Chemical Letters2019,30,7:2
Effect of valproic acid on endogenous neural stem cell proliferation in a rat model of spinal cord injury显示文摘BACKGROUND:Valproic acid has been reported to decrease apoptosis, promote neuronal differentiation of brain-derived neural stem cells, and inhibit glial differentiation of brain-derived neural stem cells. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effects of valproic acid on proliferation of endogenous neural stem cells in a rat model of spinal cord injury. DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:A randomized, controlled, neuropathological study was performed at Key Laboratory of Trauma,Burrning, and Combined Injury,Research Institute of Surgery,Daping Hospital, the Third Military Medical University of Chinese PLA between November 2005 and February 2007. MATERIALS:A total of 45 adult,Wistar rats were randomly divided into sham surgery(n=5),injury (n=20),and valproic acid(n=20) groups.Valproic acid was provided by Sigma,USA. METHODS:Injury was induced to the T_(10) segment in the injury and valproic acid groups using the metal weight-dropping method. The spinal cord was exposed without contusion in the sham surgery group.Rats in the valproic acid group were intraperitoneally injected with 150 mg/kg valproic acid every 12 hours(twice in total). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Nestin expression(5 mm from injured center) was detected using immunohistochemistry at 1,3 days,1,4,and 8 weeks post-injury. RESULTS:Low expression of nestin was observed in the cytoplasm, but rarely in the white matter of the spinal cord in the sham surgery group. In the injury group, nestin expression was observed in the ependyma and pia mater one day after injury, and expression reached a peak at 1 week(P<0.05). Expression was primarily observed in the ependymal cells, which expanded towards the white and gray matter of the spinal cord.Nestin expression rapidly decreased by 4 weeks post-injury,and had almost completely disappeared by 8 weeks. At 24 hours after spinal cord injury, there was no significant difference in nestin expression between the valproic acid and injury groups. At 1 week, there was a significant increase in the number of nestin-positive cells surrounding the central canal in valproic acid group compared with the injury group(P<0.05).Expression reached a peak by 4 weeks, and it was still present at 8 weeks. CONCLUSION:Valproic acid promoted endogenous neural stem cell proliferation following spinal cord injury in rats.Guoxin Nan Ming Li Weihong Liao Jiaqiang Qin Yujiang Cao Youqiong Lu 2009Neural Regeneration Research2009,4,7:1

Ependymal cell proliferation and apoptosis following acute spinal cord injury in the adult rat显示文摘BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that spinal cord injury can induce the reactive proliferation of ependymal cells and secondarily cause the apoptosis of nerve cells. However, there is no generally accepted theory on the apoptotic characteristics of ependymal cells in the injured spinal cord. OBJECTIVE: To observe the reactive proliferation and apoptosis of ependymal cells in adult rats following acute spinal cord injury. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A randomized control study based on neuropathology was performed in the Third Military Medical University of Chinese PLA between 2005 and 2007. MATERIALS: Forty healthy, adult, Wistar rats were included in the present study. METHODS: Moderate spinal cord injury was established in twenty rats using Feeney's method, while the remaining 20 rats served as controls and were only treated with laminectomy. All rats were injected intraperitoneally with 1.25 mL of BrdU solution (10 mg BrdU/mL saline) 3 times at 4 hours intervals during the 12 hours prior to sacrifice. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Ependymal cell proliferation and apoptosis in the rat spinal cord were determined by BrdU and nestin immunofluorescence double-labeling, as well as the TUNEL method, at 1, 3, 7, and 14 days after operation. RESULTS: In the moderate spinal cord injury rats, nestin expression was observed in the cytoplasm of ependymal cells. One day immediately following surgery, ependymal cells were BrdU-labeled. The number of BrdU-positive cells increased at 3 days, reached a peak at 7 days, and gradually reduced thereafter. The ependyma developed from a constitutive monolayer cells to a multi-layer cell complex. Some BrdU/Nestin double-positive ependymal cells migrated out from the ependyma. TUNEL-positive cells were also detected in the ependyma in the central region, as well as ischemic regions of the injured spinal cord. In addition, TUNEL-positive cells were visible in the ependyma. No TUNEL-positive ependymal cells were observed in the normal spinal cord. CONCLUSION: Proliferating ependymal cells induced apoptosis in the central and surrounding region following spinal cord injury.Xu Wang Jun Qian Yanchao Ma Guoxin Nan Shuanke Wang Yayi Xia Youcheng Zhang 2008Neural Regeneration Research2008,3,10:1
Ruminal bacterial community is associated with the variations of total milk solid content in Holstein lactating cows显示文摘Total milk solid(TMS)content directly reflects the quality of milk.Rumen bacteria ferment dietary components, the process of which generates the precursors for the synthesis of milk solid, therefore, the variation in rumen bacterial community could be associated with milk solid in dairy cows.In this study,45 healthy mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows with the similar body weight, lactation stage, and milk yield were initially used for the selection of 10 cows with high TMS(HS)and 10 cows with low TMS(LS).All those animals were under the same feeding management, and the individual milk yield was recorded for 14 consecutive days before milk and rumen fluid were sampled.Rumen fluid was used to determine bacterial community by 16S rRNA gene sequencing technique. The HS cows had significantly greater feed intake and milk TMS,fat, protein content than LS cows(P<0.05).Among the volatile fatty acids(VFA),propionic acid and valeric acid concentrations were significantly greater in HS cows than those in LS cows(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the concentrations of acetate, butyrate, isobutyrate, valerate, and the total VFA(P>0.05),nor was the acetate-to-propionate ratio,pH value, ammonia nitrogen and microbial crude protein concentrations(P>0.05).Significant differences in the relative abundances of some bacterial genera were found between HS and LS cows.Spearman’s rank correlation analysis revealed that TMS content was correlated positively with the abundances of Ruminococcaceae UCG-014,Ruminococcaceae NK4A214 group,Prevotellaceae UCG-001,Butyrivibrio 2,Prevotellaceae UCG-003,Candidatus Saccharimonas,Ruminococcus 2,Lachnospiraceae XPB1014 group, probable genus 10,Eubacterium ventriosum group, but negatively correlated with Pyramidobacte. In addition,Ruminococcaceae UCG-014,Ruminococcus 2,Ruminococcaceae UCG001,probable genus 10 and Eubacterium ventriosum group might boost the total VFA production in the rumen. In conclusion, the dry matter intake of dairy cows and some special bacteria in rumen were significantly associated with TMS content, which suggests the potential function of rumen bacteria contributing to TMS content in dairy cows.Kaizhen Liu Yangdong Zhang Guoxin Huang Nan Zheng Shengguo Zhao Jiaqi Wang 2022Animal Nutrition2022,,2:0
Quantitatively investigating the self-attraction of nanowires显示文摘The self-attraction of nanowires(NWs)would lead to NWs bunching up together when fabricated in high density and the short circuit of NW-based devices during service. However, the underlying mechanism of the self-attraction of NWs remains debatable due to the lack of in situ characterization of the attraction. In this study,a versatile method of in situ investigating the self-attraction of NWs was developed. The attractive force between two NWs and their distance can be determined quantitatively in the process of attraction under an optical microscope, eliminating the influence of electron beam in electron microscopes. With this approach, the self-attraction of SiC NWs was investigated and a two-stage mechanism for the self-attraction was proposed. The electrostatic force between two individual SiC NWs increased as their distance decreased, and acted as the initial driving force for the attraction of NWs.SiC NWs remained in contact under van der Waals force until they separated when external force exceeded van der Waals force. The charge density and the Hamaker constant of SiC NWs were determined to be 1.9×10^(-4)C·m^(-2)and 1.56×10^(-19)J,which played an important role in the attraction of NWs.The results shed light on the mechanism of selfattraction among NWs and provide new insights into fabricating high-quality NWs and developing high-performance NW-based devices.Junfeng Cui Zhenyu Zhang Le Lv Kazuhito Nishimura Guoxin Chen Nan Jiang 2022Nano Research2022,15,4:0
