Electrochemical behavior of zirconium in molten NaCl-KCl-K_2ZrF_6 system显示文摘The electrochemical reduction of Zr4+(complex) ions in NaCl-KCl-K2ZrF6 molten salt on Pt electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry at 1023 K.Two cathodic reduction peaks related to Zr4+/Zr2+ and Zr2+/Zr steps were observed in the cyclic voltammograms. The result was also confirmed by square wave voltammetry. The diffusion coefficient of Zr4+(complex) ions at 1023 K in NaCl-KCl-K2ZrF6 melt, measured by cyclic voltammetry,is about 4.22×10-6 cm2/s.The characterization of the deposits obtained by potentiostatic electrolysis at different potentials was investigated by XRD,and the results were well consistent with the electrochemical reduction mechanism of Zr4+(complex) ions. | WU Yanke XU Zhigao CHEN Song WANG Lijun LI Guoxun | 2011 | Rare Metals2011,30,1: | 16
A more consistent intraluminal rhesus monkey model of ischemic stroke显示文摘Endovascular surgery is advantageous in experimentally induced ischemic stroke because it causes fewer cranial traumatic lesions than invasive surgery and can closely mimic the pathophysiology in stroke patients. However, the outcomes are highly variable, which limits the accuracy of evaluations of ischemic stroke studies. In this study, eight healthy adult rhesus monkeys were randomized into two groups with four monkeys in each group: middle cerebral artery occlusion at origin segment(M1) and middle cerebral artery occlusion at M2 segment. The blood flow in the middle cerebral artery was blocked completely for 2 hours using the endovascular microcoil placement technique(1 mm × 10 cm)(undetachable), to establish a model of cerebral ischemia. The microcoil was withdrawn and the middle cerebral artery blood flow was restored. A reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion model was identified by hematoxylin-eosin staining, digital subtraction angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and neurological evaluation. The results showed that the middle cerebral artery occlusion model was successfully established in eight adult healthy rhesus monkeys, and ischemic lesions were apparent in the brain tissue of rhesus monkeys at 24 hours after occlusion. The rhesus monkeys had symptoms of neurological deficits. Compared with the M1 occlusion group, the M2 occlusion group had lower infarction volume and higher neurological scores. These experimental findings indicate that reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion can be produced with the endovascular microcoil technique in rhesus monkeys. The M2 occluded model had less infarction and less neurological impairment, which offers the potential for application in the field of brain injury research. | Bo Zhao Guowei Shang Jian Chen Xiaokun Geng Xin Ye Guoxun Xu Ju Wang Jiasheng Zheng Hongjun Li Fauzia Akbary Shengli Li Jing Lu Feng Ling Xunming Ji | 2014 | Neural Regeneration Research2014,9,23: | 6
A new kind of magnetic targeting induction heating drug carrier and its physical and biological properties显示文摘Nano-carbon and iron composite―carbon-coated iron nanoparticles (CCINs) produced by carbon arc method can be used as a new kind of magnetic targeting induction heating drug carrier for cancer therapy. The structure and morphology of CCINs are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Mossbauer spectra of these nanoparticles show that they contain only iron and carbon, without ferric carbide and ferric oxide. CCINs can be used as the magnetic drug carrier, with the effect of targeting magnetic induction heating in its inner core and higher drug adsorption in its nano-carbon shell outside because of its high specific surface area. CCINs can absorb Epirubicin (EPI) of 160 μg/mg measured by an optical spectrometer. In acute toxicity experiment with mice, the median lethal dose (LD50) of EPI is 16.9 mg/kg, while that of EPI-CCINs mixture is 20.7 mg/kg and none of the mice died after pure CCINs medication. The results show that pure CCINs belong to non-toxic grade and EPI delivery in mixture with CCINs can reduce its acute toxicity in mice. The magnetic properties of CCINs and their magnetic induction heating are investigated. The iron nanoparticle in its inner core has better magnetism with a good effect on targeting magnetic induction heating. When the CCINs are mixed with physiological salt water and are injected uniformly in pig's liver, the temperature goes up to 48℃. While in the case that CCINs are filled in a certain section of pig's liver, the temperature goes up to 52℃. In both cases the temperature is high enough to kill the cancer cell. CCINs have potential applications in cancer therapy. | ZHANG HaiYan CHEN YiMing ZHENG Yun LAO XiangMing ZENG GuoXun PANG JinShan WU QiGuang LI JinQing | 2009 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2009,52,10: | 2

Organising a juvenile ratio monitoring programme for 10 key waterbird species in the Yangtze River floodplain:analysis and proposals显示文摘Background:In the face of continued degradation and loss of wetlands in the Yangtze River floodplain(YRF),there is an urgent need to monitor the abundance and distribution of wintering waterbirds. To understand fully observed annual changes,we need to monitor demographic rates to understand factors affecting global population size.Annual reproduction success contributes to dynamic changes in population size and age structure,so an assessment of the juvenile ratio(i.e.first winter birds as a proportion of total number aged)of overwintering waterbirds can be an important indicator of the reproductive success in the preceding breeding season. Methods:During 2016-2019,we sampled juvenile ratios among 10 key waterbird species from the wetlands in the YRF.Based on these data,we here attempt to establish a simple, efficient, focused and reliable juvenile ratio monitoring scheme,to assess consistently and accurately relative annual breeding success and its contribution to the age structure among these waterbird species. Results:We compared juvenile ratio data collected throughout the winter and found that the optimal time for undertaking these samples was in the early stages of arrival for migratory waterbirds reaching their wintering area(early to mid-December).We recommend counting consistently at key points(i.e.those where>1%biogeographical flyway population were counted)at sites of major flyway importance(Poyang Lake,East Dongting Lake,Shengjin Lake,Caizi Lake,Longgan Lake and Chen Lake).Based on this, the error rate of the programme(155 planned points, the count of 10 waterbird species is 826-8955)is less than 5%.Conclusions:We established a juvenile ratio monitoring programme for 10 key waterbird species in the wetlands of the YRF,and discuss the feasibility and necessity of implementing such a future programme, and how to use these data in our monitoring and understanding of the population dynamics of these waterbird populations. | Yuxi Wang Iderbat Damba Qingshan Zhao Yanbo Xie Xueqing Deng Rdi Ga Guanhua Liu Zhiwen Xu Yue Li Dali Gao Wenbin Xu Guoxun Chen Lei Cao | 2021 | Avian Research2021,12,4: | 1

Competing Crystallization between Lanthanide and Actinide in Acidic Solution Leading to Their Efficient Separation显示文摘Summary of main observation and conclusion We present a new method for generating europium oxalate compounds by decomposing of N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone in HNO3 media. The reaction exhibits high selectivity towards Eu^3+ over UO2^2+,which suggests that these conditions could be applied to a selective crystallization based separation system for trivalent lanthanides and hexavalent actinides. | Xuemiao Yin Yaxing Wang Xiaoyan Li Jian Xie Mark A.Silver Lanhua Chen Daopeng Sheng Guoxun Ji Zhifang Chai Shuao Wang | 2019 | Chinese Journal of Chemistry2019,37,1: | 1

Dexamethasone potentiates the insulin-induced Srebp-1c expression in primary rat hepatocytes显示文摘The impacts of dexamethasone(Dex)and thyroid hormone T3 on the insulin-stimulated Srebp-1c expression were studied in primary rat hepatocytes. Primary hepatocytes from Sprague-Dawley rats were isolated, cultured and treated with insulin in the presence or absence of the indicated reagents over time. The mRNA levels of indicated genes were determined using real-time PCR. Insulin treatment induced the Srebp-1c expression and suppressed the Pck1 expression in a time-dependent manner. Dex treatment alone reduced the Srebp-1c expression, whereas potentiated the insulin-induced its expression, which reached to a level that was higher than the insulin alone group. On the other hand, insulin treatment completely suppressed the Dex-induced Pck1 expression in the same cells. T3 treatment did not affect the expressions of Srebp-1c and Pck1 alone or in the presence of absence of insulin or Dex. Interestingly, insulin treatment induced the Rxrg m RNA expression level in the absence or presence of T0901317, a specific agonist for the liver X receptor. Dex and insulin mutually affect each other's ability to regulate the expression levels of hepatic genes involved in glucose and fatty acid metabolism. Insulin induced Rxrg expression in primary hepatocytes, which may contribute to the induction of Srebp-1c expression in the same cells. | Yan Zhang Xiangming Fang Fen Shuang Guoxun Chen | 2023 | Food Science and Human Wellness2023,12,5: | 0
The challenges of future foods from prevention of nutrient deficiencies to the management of diabetes显示文摘With rise of globa1 populations, food demand is expected to increase correspondingly.Concurrently, the number of people with chronic metabolic diseases, specifically diabetes,is also on the rise.Since the discovery of insulin exactly 100 years ago, every aspect of society including food industry has evolved drastically.Hormones, and pesticides have been introduced constantly to increase food production for consumptions.Additionally, the changes of biodiversity in agriculhure might have incorporated certain foods and excluded others selectively in diets, which probably results in the production of food with more calories, but 1ess essentia1 nutrients. These might have affected systemic functions in the body and contributed to the development of chronic metabolic diseases. Moreover, genetic and epigenetic factors have had impacts on disease susceptibility, which has challenged the protective mechanisms that have been estab1ished in the human genome during evolution. Here,we try to summarize certain changes of systematic,environmenta1,metabolic,and physiological factors that may have potential effects on human diets and metabolism, and in turn, contributed to the current epidemic of chonic metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. In so doing,we hope to bring the attention of colleagues to develop future foods that not only eliminate malnutnition, but also reduce the incidence of metabolic diseases. | Christian Hamrick Guoxun Chen | 2021 | Journal of Future Foods2021,1,1: | 0
The current trend and challenges of developing red yeast rice-based food supplements for hypercholesterolemia显示文摘Hypercholesterolemia is a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases, which have been managed using statin drugs.Red yeast rice(RYR)as a traditional food in the Eastern Asia countries has anti-hyperlipidemia activity.Recently,a variety of food supplement products containing RYR have been developed to lower blood cholesterol, which is attributed to the presence of monacolins, especially monacolin K(lovastatin,a statin drug). This review was aimed to summarize the clinical trials using RYR products to investigate their effects on lipid profiles in humans.Relevant articles of human clinical trials were retrieved from PubMed and discussed here. Results showed that RYR and its extracts have been included in commercially available products alone and in combinations with various other materials, which include bioactive compounds such as coenzyme Q10 and berberine, vitamins, extracts from other plants such as phytosterols, polyunsaturated fatty acids or even probiotics. The durations of the trials ranged from 4 weeks to 60 months. The content of monacolin K ranged from 0.32 mg/pack to 10 mg/pack.The data of these human clinical trials demonstrated that these RYR supplement products were sufficient to reduce blood cholesterol in different populations. However, the inclusions of certain materials might not have additive effect.Additionally, studies including a lovastatin only positive control group with the equivalent dose as that of monacolin K in the RYR products remain to be done.Furthermore, variations of monacolin K contents and presence of toxic citrinin are still concerns.Last, bioactivities of other components in RYR should be investigated as well.More future studies will certainly help to fully explore the potentials of this traditional food in the combat against cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases. | Gong Chen Wanbo Chen Jinhong Xu Guodong Ma Xinge Hu Guoxun Chen | 2023 | Journal of Future Foods2023,3,4: | 0
Personalized nutrition for people with diabetes and at risk of diabetes has begun显示文摘Food and nutrition are essential parts for the management of blood glucose of patients with diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The results of recent human clinical studies have shown that the blood glucose levels change differently in different people in response to the same standardized meals. This phenomenon shows the challenges to find a one-size-fits-all approach to combat diabetes. With the development of technologies, personalized nutrition/precision nutrition has gradually become more practical in order to treat individual diabetes. The aim of this review article is to summarize personalized nutrition’s progress and potential in treating the diabetes epidemic. We have searched PubMed to identify relevant articles and found that personalized nutrition on multiple factors associated with an individual has started to draw attention to scientifi c communities. Two seminal studies have shown that healthy adults show differential responses of postprandial blood glucose levels to the same standardized meals.Human clinical trials have started to integrate sensor technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and personal data such as genomic sequences and microbiome to provide personalized nutrition advice, and shown promises in intervention and management of type 2 diabetes. It appears that the interplays of diets and genomes, gut microbiome, gut transit time, insulin sensitivity, cultural, social, and economic factors should all be considered to create a personalized treatment for an individual’s chronic metabolic disease. This probably can be achieved through the integration of personalized nutrition and personalized food intervention with the development of technologies and advances in food and nutrition sciences.More research should be anticipated soon. | Raymond Chen Guoxun Chen | 2022 | Journal of Future Foods2022,2,3: | 0
