One-step synthesis of fluorescent hydroxyls-coated carbon dots with hydrothermal reaction and its application to optical sensing of metal ions显示文摘Carbon dots (CDs) with average diameter of 3.1 ± 0.5 nm were facilely synthesized with candle soot through hydrothermal reaction in sodium hydroxide aqueous solution. The as-prepared CDs were covered with a lot of hydroxyls, possessed properties of good water-solubility, anti-photobleaching, salt tolerance, and low cytotoxicity, and had a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of about 5.5%. The fluorescence of the hydroxyls-coated CDs could be selectively quenched by metal ions such as Cr3+, Al3+ and Fe3+, which is because these metals can easily combine with the hydroxyl groups on the surface of CDs and induce aggregation of hydroxyls-coated CDs. Experiments showed that the quenching of Cr3+ had a Sterm-Volmer constant of 1.03 × 107 M-1 with a liner range of 1.0-25.0 μM and detection limit of 60 nM (3σ). | LIU LiQin LI YuanFang ZHAN Lei LIU Yue HUANG ChengZhi | 2011 | Science China Chemistry2011,54,8: | 21
Stretching and imaging studies of single DNA molecules显示文摘DNA molecules were stretched on silanized mica surface with the molecular combing technique, and detected with fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Meantime, DNA molecules were stretched with a modified dynamic molecular combing technique and studied with atomic force microscopy. The results indicate that, compared with the dynamic molecular combing technique, the modified dynamic molecular combing technique has advantages of less-sample demand and less contamination to sample; as compared with the molecular combing technique, it has better aligning effect and reproducibility. Combination of this kind of DNA molecular manipulating technique with the single DNA molecule detecting technique by atomic force microscopy and fluorescence microscopy will play an important role in the basic research of molecular dynamics and the application of gene research. | ZHANG Yi CHEN Shengfu OUYANG Zhenqian HU Jun XIONG Qihua LI Bin HUANG Yibo LI Minqian JIN Chengzhi | 2000 | Chinese Science Bulletin2000,45,15: | 13
Toxicity of graphene oxide and multi-walled carbon nanotubes against human cells and zebrafish显示文摘Graphene possesses unique physical and chemical properties, which have inspired a wide range of potential biomedical applications. However, little is known about the adverse effects of graphene on the human body and ecological environment. The purpose of our work is to make assessment on the toxicity of graphene oxide (GO) against human cell line (human bone marrow neuroblastoma cell line and human epithelial carcinoma cell line) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) by comparing the toxic effects of GO with its sister, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The results show that GO has a moderate toxicity to organisms since it can induce minor (about 20%) cell growth inhibition and slight hatching delay of zebrafish embryos at a dosage of 50 mg/L, but did not result in significant increase of apoptosis in embryo, while MWNTs exhibit acute toxicity leading to a strong inhibition of cell proliferation and serious morphological defects in developing embryos even at relatively low concentration of 25 mg/L. The distinctive toxicity of GO and MWNTs should be ascribed to the different models of interaction between nanomaterials and organisms, which arises from the different geometric structures of nanomaterials. Collectively, our work suggests that GO does actual toxicity to organisms posing potential environmental risks and the result is also shedding light on the geometrical structure-dependent toxicity of graphitic nanomaterials. | CHEN LiQiang HU PingPing ZHANG Li HUANG SiZhou LUO LingFei HUANG ChengZhi | 2012 | Science China Chemistry2012,55,10: | 12
Research progress in the estimation of the postmortem interval by Chinese forensic scholars显示文摘The determination of time since death or the postmortem interval(PMI)is one of the most important and frequently asked questions in forensic medicine.Medicolegal scholars and forensic pathologists around the world have studied the estimation of PMI extensively in the past, and many novel methods and advanced technologies have now been applied in the field. For several centuries,Chinese forensic examiners have also worked on the estimation of the PMI,and there are a large number of excellent studies published in Chinese rather than in English, and these are not easily accessible or known internationally. Therefore we have conducted a review of relevant studies published by Chinese forensic scholars in the last few decades. The scope of this review is to provide a concise summary of the current progress in the estimation of PMI by Chinese forensic researchers using molecular biology, spectroscopic technology, entomological methods, energy changes, thanatochemistry and other methods. | Chengzhi Li Qi Wang Yinming Zhang Hancheng Lin Ji Zhang Ping Huang Zhenyuan Wang | 2016 | Forensic Sciences Research2016,1,1: | 9
Development of nitrogen and sulfur-doped carbon dots for cellular imaging显示文摘Heteroatom-doped carbon dots(CDs) have attracted extensive interest because of their improved electronic and fluorescence properties with heteroatom doping. In this study, a new synthetic method for nitrogen(N) and sulfur(S)-doped CDs was developed via a hydrothermal method using methionine and citric acid as raw materials. The as-prepared CDs exhibit excellent optical properties and good biocompatibility. The spherical N,S-doped CDs have an average diameter of 5 nm. They consist of C, O, N and S, and take on excellent water solubility due to the hydroxyl and carboxyl, amino groups on the surface. The CDs have a photoluminescence quantum yield of 13.8% using quinine sulfate as a reference; the average fluorescence lifetime of the CDs was 3.67 ns. The CDs solution present good photoluminescence properties, and the maximum excitation wavelength and emission wavelength locate at 330 nm and405 nm, respectively. In addition, their fluorescence intensity almost does not change under the conditions of acid, alkali, and high salt, which indicated their anti-photobleaching property and good light stability. Based on the good biocompatibility and strong fluorescence emission of the CDs, they can be used as fluorescent imaging reagents. | Hui Liu Yue Zhang Chengzhi Huang | 2019 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2019,9,2: | 6

Investigations of the interaction between cuprous oxide nanoparticles and Staphylococcus aureus显示文摘Cuprous oxide nanoparticles of 30-50 nm in size were prepared in the presence of cetyltrimethylam-monium bromide (CTAB). By taking Staphylococcus aureus (S.a), which always causes a variety of suppurative infections and toxinoses in humans, as a model bioparticle, the negative bioeffect of nano-Cu2O on S.a cells was evaluated, and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by imitating the MIC of antibiotics. Cellularity and bactericidal effect were measured by flow cytometry (FCM), dark field light scattering imaging and SEM photography. The results showed that nano-Cu2O particles may, by absorbing on the cell surface, impair the cell wall, damage the cell membrane, and finally increase permeability of the cell membrane, thus leading to a decrease in the viability of bacteria in the nano-Cu2O solution. | SHEN ChengLing LI YuanFang QI WenJing HUANG ChengZhi | 2009 | Science China Chemistry2009,52,7: | 4
Evolution and Domestication Footprints Uncovered from the Genomes of Coix显示文摘Coix lacryma-jobi,a plant species closely related to Zea and Sorghum,is an important food and medicinal crop in Asia. However,no reference genome of this species has been reported, and its exact phylogeny within the Andropogoneae remains unresolved. Here,we generated a high-quality genome assembly of coix comprising~1.73 Gb with 44485 predicted protein-coding genes. We found coix to be a typical diploid plant with an overall 1-to-1 syntenic relationship with the Sorghum genome, despite its drastic genome expansion(~2.3-fold)due mainly to the activity of transposable elements.Phylogenetic analysis revealed that coix diverged with sorghum~10.41 million years ago, which was~1.49 million years later than the divergence between sorghum and maize.Resequencing of 27 additional coix accessions revealed that they could be unambiguously separated into wild relatives and cultivars, and suggested that coix experienced a strong genetic bottleneck, resulting in the loss of about half of the genetic diversity during domestication, even though many traits have remained undomesticated. Our data not only provide novel comparative genomic and evolutionary insights into the Andropogoneae lineage, but also an important resource that will greatly benefit molecular breeding of this important crop. | Hongbing Liu Junpeng Shi Zexi Cai Yumin Huang Menglu Lv Huilong Du Qiang Gao Yi Zuo Zhaobin Dong Wei Huang Rui Qin Chengzhi Liang Jinsheng Lai Weiwei Jin | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,2: | 4

Shape- and size-dependent catalysis activities of iron-terephthalic acid metal-organic frameworks显示文摘Precise control of the size and morphology of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) presents an important direction for extending these inorganic-organic materials to many more advanced applications. However, because of the limit of the crystal-growth rule and mechanism, good-control of the size and morphology of MOFs remains challenging. In this contribution, an iron-terephthalic acid metal-organic framework with different shapes(octahedron, spindle and bipyramidal hexagonal) was easily and reproducibly synthesized via a solvothermal method. Sodium acetate and glycerol were used as modulators. Mechanism studies showed that the crystal nucleation rate and orientational growth both play important roles in determining the final shape of the MOFs. Further investigations showed that the as prepared MOFs exhibit shape-dependent catalytic activities, which means that MOFs can be designed to perform different catalytic functions. This investigation not only provides an effective guideline for the precise control of the size and morphology of metal-organic frameworks, but also extends MOFs to much more advanced applications in terms of catalyst chemistry. | Yali Liu Pengfei Gao Chengzhi Huang Yuanfang Li | 2015 | Science China Chemistry2015,58,10: | 3
Single-shot spectral-volumetric compressed ultrafast photography显示文摘In ultrafast optical imaging,it is critical to obtain the spatial structure, temporal evolution, and spectral composition of the object with snapshots in order to better observe and understand unrepeatable or irreversible dynamic scenes. However,so far, there are no ultrafast optical imaging techniques that can simultaneously capture the spatial–temporal–spectral five-dimensional(5D)information of dynamic scenes. To break the limitation of the existing techniques in imaging dimensions,we develop a spectral-volumetric compressed ultrafast photography(SV-CUP)technique.In our SV-CUP,the spatial resolutions in the x,y and z directions are,respectively,0.39,0.35,and 3 mm with an 8.8 mm×6.3 mm field of view, the temporal frame interval is 2 ps,and the spectral frame interval is 1.72 nm.To demonstrate the excellent performance of our SV-CUP in spatial–temporal–spectral 5D imaging,we successfully measure the spectrally resolved photoluminescent dynamics of a 3D mannequin coated with CdSe quantum dots. Our SV-CUP brings unprecedented detection capabilities to dynamic scenes, which has important application prospects in fundamental research and applied science. | Pengpeng Ding Yunhua Yao Dalong Qi Chengshuai Yang Fengyan Cao Yilin He Jiali Yao Chengzhi Jin Zhengqi Huang Li Deng Lianzhong Deng Tianqing Jia Jinyang Liang Zhenrong Sun Shian Zhang | 2021 | Advanced Photonics2021,3,4: | 3
Supplement and optimization of classical capillary number experimental curve for enhanced oil recovery by combination flooding显示文摘In the middle of the last century,American scientists put forward the concept of capillary number and obtained the relation curve between capillary number and residual oil through experiments. They revealed that the corresponding residual oil saturation decreased with increasing of capillary number;after capillary number reached up to a limit, residual oil saturation would become stable and did not decrease. These important achievements laid a theoretical base for enhanced oil recovery with chemical flooding. On the basis of the theory, scholars developed chemical flooding numerical simulation software UTCHEM.During the numerical simulation study of combination flooding, the authors found that as the capillary number is higher than the limit capillary number, the changes of the residual oil saturation along with the capillary number differ from the classical capillary number curve.Oil displacement experiments prove that there are defects in classic capillary number experimental curve and it is necessary to mend and improve.Capillary number‘calculation’curve is obtained with a method of numerical simulation calculation and a complete description of capillary number curve is provided; On this basis, combination flooding capillary number experimental curve QL is obtained through experiments, which is different from the classical capillary curve;and based on which,an expression of corresponding combination flooding relative permeability curve QL is given and the corresponding relative permeability parameters are determined with experiments.Further oil displacement experiment research recognizes the cause of the singular changes of the capillary number curve.'Combination flooding capillary number experimental curve QL'and'combination flooding relative permeability curve QL'are written in combination flooding software IMCFS,providing an effective technical support for the application of combination flooding technical research. | QI LianQing LIU ZongZhao YANG ChengZhi YIN YanJun HOU JiRui ZHANG Jian HUANG Bo SHI FengGang | 2014 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,11: | 2
Arsenic species in electronic cigarettes:Determination and potential health risk显示文摘Human exposure to contaminants from electronic cigarettes(e-cigarettes)and the associated health effects are poorly understood. There has been no report on the speciation of arsenic in e-liquid(solution used for e-cigarettes)and aerosols. We report here determination of arsenic species in e-liquids and aerosols generated from vaping the e-liquid.Seventeen e-liquid samples of major brands, purchased from local and online stores in Canada and China, were analyzed for arsenic species using high-performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.Aerosols condensed from vaping the eliquids were also analyzed and compared for arsenic species.Six arsenic species were detected, including inorganic arsenate(iAsⅤ),arsenite(iAsⅢ),monomethylarsonic acid(MMA),and three new arsenic species not reported previously. In e-liquids,iAsⅢwas detected in 59%,iAsⅤin 94%,and MMA in 47%of the samples. In the condensate of aerosols from vaping the e-liquids,iAsⅢwas detected in 100%,iAsv in 88%,and MMA in 13%of the samples.Inorganic arsenic species were predominant in e-liquids and aerosols of e-cigarettes.The concentration of iAsⅢin the condensate of aerosols(median 3.27μg/kg)was significantly higher than that in the e-liquid(median 1.08μg/kg)samples.The concentration of inorganic arsenic in the vaping air was approximately 3.4μg/m3,which approaches to the permissible exposure limit(10μg/m3)set by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA).According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s unit risk factor(4.3×10-3 perμg/m3)for inhalation exposure to inorganic arsenic in the air,the estimated excess lung cancer risk from lifetime exposure to inorganic arsenic in the ecigarette vaping air(3.4μg/m3),assuming e-cigarette vaping at 1%of the time,is as high as1.5×10-4.These results raise health concerns over the exposure to arsenic from electronic cigarettes. | Qingqing Liu Chengzhi Huang XChris Le | 2020 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,5: | 2
Graphene Oxide Assemblies for Sustainable Clean-Water Harvesting and Green-Electricity Generation显示文摘CONSPECTUS:The urgent problems of water scarcity and the energy crisis have given rise to the development of a range of sustainable technologies with the great advancement of nanotechnologies and advent of attractive nanomaterials.Graphene oxides(GO),a derivative of graphene with an atom-thin thickness and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups(such as−OH,−COOH),are water-soluble and can be assembled into a variety of structures(such as fiber, membrane, and foam)with great potential in environmental and energy-related fields. As a typical precursor of graphene,GO can be easily reduced to graphene by chemical or thermal treatments to demonstrate excellent photothermal properties as well as tunable thermal conduction, which is highly desirable for efficient solar-driven water evaporation. The intrinsic large specific area of GO nanosheets can provide enough sites for ions adsorption and its porous assemblies facilitate the transport of water. In addition, the abundant functional groups allow the spontaneous adsorption of water molecules from the ambient environment and give birth to movable ions(usually protons)under the solvation effect.Once a chemical gradient is formed on the component,a remarkable electricity is generated from the directional transport of protons. Thanks to the excellent chemical properties of GO nanosheets,a wide range of assemblies with 1D aligned fibers,2D layered membranes and 3D porous foam can be easily fabricated by wet-spinning,solution-filtration,and freezingdrying methods. The various GO assemblies are able to exhibit abundant functions with remarkable weaving capability for GO fibers, superior flexibility for GO membranes, and exceptional adsorption capacity for GO foams. In light of all the advantages,GO and its assemblies are remarkably promising in the fields of sustainable development to meet the pressing challenges of water and energy crisis. In this Account,we will discuss the progress of clean-water production and green-electricity generation technologies based on GO assemblies. The fundamental working mechanism, optimization strategies, and promising applications are explored with an emphasis on the materials development. We also discuss the functions of GO assemblies in the water and electricity generation process and present their limitations and possible solutions.Current challenges and promising directions for the development of clean-water production and green-electricity generation are also demonstrated for their realistic implementations. We anticipate that this Account would promote more efforts toward fundamental research on graphene functionalization and encourage a broad exploration on the application of graphene assemblies in clean-water production and electric power generation systems. | Yaxin Huang Chengzhi Wang Changxiang Shao Boyu Wang Nan Chen Haibo Jin Huhu Cheng Liangti Qu | 2021 | Accounts of Materials Research2021,2,2: | 2

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes based catalyst plasmon resonance light scattering analysis of tetracycline hydrochloride显示文摘It was found that multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) could catalyze the redox reaction between chlorauric acid (HAuCl4) and reductive drugs such as tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), producing gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). By measuring the plasmon resonance light scattering (PRLS) signals of the resulting Au NPs, tetracycline hydrochloride can be detected simply and rapidly with a linear range of 4―26 μmol/L, a correlated coefficient (r ) of 0.9955, and a limit of detection (3σ) of 6.0 nmol/L. This method has been successfully applied to the detection of tetracycline hydrochloride tablets in clinic with the recovery of 101.9% and that of fresh urine samples with the recovery of 98.3%―102.0%. | HU Po HUANG ChengZhi ZHANG Li | 2008 | Science China Chemistry2008,51,9: | 2
Mercuric ions induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles as investigated by localized surface plasmon resonance light scattering and dynamic light scattering techniques显示文摘With the development of nanosciences, both localized surface plasmon resonance light scattering (LSPR-LS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques have been widely used for quantitative purposes with high sensitivity. In this contribution, we make a comparison of the two light scattering techniques by employing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) aggregation induced by mercuric ions. It was found that citrate-stabilized AuNPs got aggregated in aqueous medium in the presence of mercuric ions through a chelation process, resulting in greatly enhanced LSPR-LS signals and increased hydrodynamic diameter. The enhanced LSPR-LS intensity ( I) is proportional to the concentration of mercuric ions in the range of 0.4-2.5 M following the linear regression equation of I = 84.7+516.4c, with the correlation coefficient of 0.983 (n = 6) and the limit of determination (3 ) about 0.10 M. On the other hand, the increased hydrodynamic diameter can be identified by the DLS signals only with a concentration of Hg 2+ in the range of 1.0-2.5 M, and a linear relationship between the average hydrodynamic diameters of the resulted aggregates and the concentration of Hg 2+ can be expressed as d = 6.16 + 45.9c with the correlation coefficient of 0.994. In such case, LSPR-LS signals were further applied to the selective determination of mercuric ions in lake water samples with high sensitivity and simple operation. | WANG Wei LIU Chun LING Jian HUANG ChengZhi | 2013 | Science China Chemistry2013,56,6: | 2
