1MicroRNA sequences modulating inflammation and lipid accumulation in macrophage “foam” cells: Implications for atherosclerosis显示文摘Accumulation of macrophage'foam'cells,laden with cholesterol and cholesteryl ester,within the intima of large arteries,is a hallmark of early'fatty streak'lesions which can progress to complex,multicellular atheromatous plaques,involving lipoproteins from the bloodstream and cells of the innate and adaptive immune response.Sterol accumulation triggers induction of genes encoding proteins mediating the atheroprotective cholesterol efflux pathway.Within the arterial intima,however,this mechanism is overwhelmed,leading to distinct changes in macrophage phenotype and inflammatory status.Over the last decade marked gains have been made in understanding of the epigenetic landscape which influence macrophage function,and in particular the importance of small non-coding micro-RNA(miRNA)sequences in this context.This review identifies some of the miRNA sequences which play a key role in regulating'foam'cell formation and atherogenesis,highlighting sequences involved in cholesterol accumulation,those influencing inflammation in sterol-loaded cells,and novel sequences and pathways which may offer new strategies to influence macrophage function within atherosclerotic lesions.Richard James Lightbody Janice Marie Walsh Taylor Yvonne Dempsie Annette Graham 2020World Journal of Cardiology2020,12,7:7

4All-silicon carrier accumulation modulator based on a lateral metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor显示文摘In silicon photonics, the carrier depletion scheme has been the most commonly used mechanism for demonstrating high-speed electro-optic modulation. However, in terms of phase modulation efficiency, carrieraccumulation-based devices potentially offer almost an order of magnitude improvement over those based on carrier depletion. Previously reported accumulation modulator designs only considered vertical metal-oxidesemiconductor(MOS) capacitors, which imposes serious restrictions on the design flexibility and integratability with other photonic components. In this work, for the first time to our knowledge, we report experimental demonstration of an all-silicon accumulation phase modulator based on a lateral MOS capacitor. 8Single capillary oximetry and tissue ultrastructural sensing by dual-band dual-scan inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography显示文摘Measuring capillary oxygenation and the surrounding ultrastructure can allow one to monitor a microvascular niche and better understand crucial biological mechanisms.However,capillary oximetry and pericapillary ultrastructure are challenging to measure in vivo.Here we demonstrate a novel optical imaging system,dual-band dual-scan inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography(D2-ISOCT),that,for the first time,can simultaneously obtain the following metrics in vivo using endogenous contrast:(1)capillary-level oxygen saturation and arteriolar-level blood flow rates,oxygen delivery rates,and oxygen metabolic rates;(2)spatial characteristics of tissue structures at length scales down to 30 nm;and(3)morphological images up to 2mm in depth.To illustrate the capabilities of D2-ISOCT,we monitored alterations to capillaries and the surrounding pericapillary tissue(tissue between the capillaries)in the healing response of a mouse ear wound model.The obtained microvascular and ultrastructural metrics corroborated well with each other,showing the promise of D2-ISOCT for becoming a powerful new non-invasive imaging tool.Rongrong Liu James A.Winkelmann Graham Spicer Yunxiao Zhu Aya Eid Guillermo A.Ameer Vadim Backman Ji Yi 2018Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1:4
9Superior anti-corrosion and self-healing bi-functional polymer composite coatings with polydopamine modified mesoporous silica/graphene oxide显示文摘In this article,graphene oxide(GO)and benzotriazole-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles(BTA/MSNs)are combined on micro scale through the in situ polymerization of polydopamine(PDA),preparing a selfhealing bi-functional GO(fGO)used as nano-fillers for anti-corrosion enhancement of waterborne epoxy(WEP)coatings.Scanning electronic microscopy(SEM)images show that the BTA/MSNs are uniformly distributed on the surface of high aspect ratio GO nanosheets to endow GO nanocontainer characteristics.UV-vis profiles demonstrate that fGO has p H-controlled release function.Modulus at lowest frequency is generally used for comparing the corrosion resistance of organic coatings.Modulus at lowest frequency(1.42×10^(5)Ωcm^(2))after 30 days immersion in 3.5 wt.%Na Cl solution revealed 2 orders of magnitude higher that of blank WEP(1.17×10^(7)Ωcm^(2)).With artificial cracks on its coatings,fGO/WEP had no obvious rust compared with blank WEP after 240 h of immersion.We anticipate that self-healing and physical barrier bi-functional nanocontainers improve the traditional anticorrosion coating efficiency with better,longer-lasting performance for shipping,oil drilling or bridge maintenance.Yanqi Ma Haowei Huang Hongda Zhou Michael Graham James Smith Xinxin Sheng Ying Chen Li Zhang Xinya Zhang Elena Shchukina Dmitry Shchukin 2021Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,36:4
10Number of COVID-19 cases required in a population to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater in the province of Alberta, Canada:Sensitivity assessment显示文摘With a unique and large size of testing results of 1,842 samples collected from 12 wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) for 14 months through from low to high prevalence of COVID-19,the sensitivity of RT-qPCR detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater that correspond to the communities was computed by using Probit analysis.This study determined the number of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population required to detect SARS-CoV-2RNA in wastewater at defined probabilities and provided an evidence-based framework of wastewater-based epidemiology surveillance (WBE).Input data were positive and negative test results of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples and the corresponding new COVID-19 case rates per 100,000 population served by each WWTP.The analyses determined that RT-qPCR-based SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection threshold at 50%,80%and 99%probability required a median of 8 (range:4-19),18 (9-43),and 38 (17-97) of new COVID-19 cases/100,000,respectively.Namely,the positive detection rate at 50%,80%and 99%probability were 0.01%,0.02%,and 0.04%averagely for new cases in the population.This study improves understanding of the performance of WBE SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection using the large datasets and prolonged study period.Estimated COVID-19 burden at a community level that would result in a positive detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is critical to support WBE application as a supplementary warning/monitoring system for COVID-19 prevention and control.Qiaozhi Li Bonita E.Lee Tiejun Gao Yuanyuan Qiu Erik Ellehoj Jiaao Yu Mathew Diggle Graham Tipples Rasha Maal-Bared Deena Hinshaw Christopher Sikora Nicholas J.Ashbolt James Talbot Steve E.Hrudey Xiaoli Pang 2023Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,3:2
11Clinical results of linezolid in arthroplasty and trauma related infections显示文摘AIM: To analyse the management of patients treated with linezolid for orthopaedic infections.METHODS: Twenty-two patients with orthopaedic related infections receiving a course of linezolid were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were classified into either post trauma, post arthroplasty and non trauma related infections. A diagnosis of infection was based on clinical findings, positive microbiological specimens, and positive signs of infection on radiological imaging and raised inflammatory markers. Pathogens isolated, inflammatory markers both at presentation and at final follow up, length of linezolid treatment, adverse drug reactions, concomitant anti-microbial therapy, length of hospital stay and any surgical interventions were recorded.RESULTS: Infections were classified as post arthroplasty(n = 10), post trauma surgery(n = 8) or nontrauma related infections(n = 4). Twenty patients(91%) underwent surgical intervention as part of their treatment. The number of required surgical procedures ranged from 1 to 6(mean = 2.56). Mean total length of stay per admission was 28.5 d(range 1-160 d). Furthermore, the mean duration of treatment with linezolid of patients who had resolution of symptoms was 31 d(range 10-84 d). All patients within this group were discharged on oral linezolid. Pathogens isolated included methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase negative staphylococci, coliforms, enterococcus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, streptococcus viridans, Escherichia coli, group B streptococcus and pseudomonas. 12Participation in cooperative prey capture and the benefits gained from it are associated with individual personality显示文摘In animal societies, behavioral idiosyncrasies of the individuals often guide which tasks theyshould perform. Such personality-specific task participation can increase individual task efficiency,thereby improving group performance. While several recent studies have documented group-levelbenefits of within-group behavioral (i.e., personality) diversity, how these benefits are realized atthe individual level is unclear. Here we probe the individual-level benefits of personality-driven taskparticipation in the social spider Stegodyphus dumicola. In S. dumicola, the presence of at leastone highly bold individual catalyzes foraging behavior in shy colony members, and all group con-stituents heavily compete for prey. We assessed boldness by examining how quickly spidersresumed normal movement after a simulated predator attack. We test here whether (1) participantsin collective foraging gain more mass from prey items and (2) whether bold individuals are less re-sistant to starvation than shy spiders, which would motivate the bold individuals to forage more.Next, we assembled colonies of shy spiders with and without a bold individual, added one preyitem, and then tracked the mass gain of each individual spider after this single feeding event. Wefound that spiders that participated in prey capture (whether bold or shy) gained more mass thannonparticipators, and colonies containing a single bold spider gained more total mass than purelyshy colonies. We also found that bold spiders participated in more collective foraging events andwere more susceptible to starvation than shy spiders, suggesting that the aggressive foraging ofbold individuals may represent a strategy to offset starvation risk.
