| 1 | Genome-wide transcriptome analysis reveals molecular pathways involved in leafy head formation of Chinese cabbage(Brassica rapa)显示文摘Chinese cabbage plants go through seedling and rosette stages before forming their leafy head.Chinese cabbage plants resemble pak-choi plants at their seedling stage,but in their rosette stage the leaves of Chinese cabbage differentiate,as they increase in size with shorter petioles.In order to understand the molecular pathways that play a role in leafy head formation,transcript abundance of young emerging leaves was profiled during development of two Chinese cabbage genotypes and a single pak-choi genotype.The two Chinese cabbages differed in many aspects,among others earliness,leaf size and shape,leaf numbers,and leafy head shape.Genome-wide transcriptome analysis clearly separated the seedling stages of all three genotypes together with the later stages from pak-choi,from the later developmental stages of both Chinese cabbages(rosette,folding,and heading).Weighted correlation network analysis and hierarchical clustering using Euclidean distances resulted in gene clusters with transcript abundance patterns distinguishing the two Chinese cabbages from pak-choi.Three clusters included genes with transcript abundance affected by both genotype and developmental stage,whereas two clusters showed only genotype effects.This included a genotype by developmental stage cluster highly enriched with the MapMan category photosynthesis,with high expression during rosette and folding in Chinese cabbages and low expression in the heading inner leaves that are not exposed to light.The other clusters contained many genes in the MapMan categories Cell,showing again differences between pak-choi and both Chinese cabbages.We discuss how this relates to the differences in leaf blade growth between Chinese cabbage and pak-choi,especially at the rosette stage.Overall,comparison of the transcriptome between leaves of two very different Chinese cabbages with pak-choi during plant development allowed the identification of specific gene categories associated with leafy head formation. | XiaoXue Sun Ram Kumar Basnet Zhichun Yan Johan Bucher Chengcheng Cai Jianjun Zhao Guusje Bonnema | 2019 | Horticulture Research2019,6,1: | 4 |

| 11 | Shear banding-inducedslip enables unprecedented strength-ductility combination of laminated metallic composites显示文摘Shear bands in metallic materials have been reported to be catastrophic because they normally lead to non-uniform plastic deformation. Ductility of laminated metallic composites deteriorates with increasing processing strain, particularly for those having hexagonal-close-packed(hcp) constituents due to inadequate slip systems and consequently prominent shear banding. Here, we propose a design strategy that counterintuitively tolerates the bands with localized strains, i.e. the shear banded laminar(SBL) structure, which promotes dislocation activation in hcp metals and renders unprecedented strengthductility combination in hcp-metal-based composites fabricated by accumulative roll bonding(ARB). The SBL structure is characterized with one soft hcp metal constrained by adjacent hard metal in which dislocations have been accumulated near the bimetal interfaces. High-energy X-ray diffraction astonishingly reveals that more than 90% of dislocations are non-basal in Ti layers of the SBL Ti/Nb composite processed by eight ARB cycles. Moreover, dislocations occupy a high fraction of ~30%, promoting further cross slip. The unique stress field tailored by both shear banding and heterophase interface-mediated deformation accommodation triggers important slip. | 12 | Reassessment of historical sections from the Paleogene marine margin of the Congo Basin reveals an almost complete absence of Danian deposits显示文摘The early Paleogene is critical for understanding global biodiversity patterns in modern ecosystems. During this interval, Southern Hemisphere continents were largely characterized by isolation and faunal endemism following the breakup of Gondwana. Africa has been proposed as an important source area for the origin of several marine vertebrate groups but its Paleogene record is poorly sampled, especially from sub-Saharan Africa. To document the early Paleogene marine ecosystems of Central Africa, we revised the stratigraphic context of sedimentary deposits from three fossil-rich vertebrate localities: the Landana section in the Cabinda exclave(Angola), and the Manzadi and Bololo localities in western Democratic Republic of Congo.We provide more refined age constraints for these three localities based on invertebrate and vertebrate faunas, foraminiferal and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, and carbon isotope records. We find an almost complete absence of Danian-aged rocks in the Landana section, contrary to prevailing interpretations over the last half a century(only the layer 1, at the base of the section, seems to be Danian). Refining the age of these Paleocene layers is crucial for analyzing fish evolution in a global framework, with implications for the early appearance of Scombridae(tunas and mackerels) and Tetraodontiformes(puffer fishes). The combination of vertebrate fossil records from Manzadi and Landana sections suggests important environmental changes around the K/Pg transition characterized by an important modification of the ichthyofauna. A small faunal shift may have occurred during the Selandian. More dramatic is the distinct decrease in overall richness that lasts from the Selandian to the Ypresian. The Lutetian of West Central Africa is characterized by the first appearance of numerous cartilaginous and bony fishes. Our analysis of the ichthyofauna moreover indicates two periods of faunal exchanges: one during the Paleocene, where Central Africa appears to have been a source for the European marine fauna, and another during the Eocene when Europe was the source of the Central Africa fauna.
