| 2 | The first all-season sample set for mapping global land cover with Landsat-8 data显示文摘We report the world's first all-season training and validation sample sets for global land cover classification with Landsat-8 data.Prior to this,such samples were only available at a single date primarily from the growing season.It is unknown how much limitation such a single-date sample has to mapping global land cover in other seasons of the year.To answer this question,we selected available Landsat-8 images from four seasons and collected training and validation samples from them.We compared the performances of training samples in different seasons using Random Forest algorithm.We found that the use of training samples from any individual season would result in the best overall classification accuracy when validated by samples in the same season.The global overall accuracy from combined best seasonal results was 67.2% when classifying the 11 Level-1 classes in the Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring of Global Land Cover(FROM-GLC) classification system.The use of training samples from all seasons(named all-season training sample set hereafter) produced an overall accuracy of 67.0%.We also tested classification within 10° latitude 60° longitude zones using all-season training subsample within each zone and obtained an overall accuracy of 70.2%.This indicates that properly grouped subsamples in space can help improve classification accuracies.All the results in this study seem to suggest that it is possible to use an all-season training sample set to reach global optimality with universal applicability in classifying images acquired at any time of a year for global land cover mapping. | Congcong Li Peng Gong Jie Wang Zhiliang Zhu Gregory S. | 4 | Piriformospora indica confers drought tolerance on Zea mays L.through enhancement of antioxidant activity and expression of drought-related genes显示文摘Drought stress is one of the most severe environmental constraints to plant growth and crop productivity. Plant growth is greatly affected by drought stress, and plants, to survive,adapt to this stress by invoking different pathways. Piriformospora indica, a root-colonizing endophytic fungus of Sebacinales, promotes plant growth and confers resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, including drought stress, by affecting the physiological properties of the host plant. The fungus strongly colonizes the roots of maize(Zea mays L.) and promotes shoot and root growth under both normal growth conditions and drought stress. We used polyethylene glycol(PEG-6000) to mimic drought stress and found that root fresh and dry weight, leaf area, SPAD value, and leaf number were increased in P. indica-colonized plants.The antioxidative activities of catalases and superoxide dismutases were upregulated within 24h in the leaves of P. indica-colonized plants. Drought-related genes DREB2A, CBL1,ANAC072, and RD29A were upregulated in drought-stressed leaves of P. indica-colonized plants. Furthermore, after drought treatment, proline content increased, whereas accumulation of malondialdehyde(MDA), an indicator of membrane damage, decreased in P. indica-colonized maize. | 7 | Topographic differentiations of biological soil crusts and hydraulic properties in fixed sand dunes, Tengger Desert显示文摘Biological soil crusts(BSCs) play an important role in surface soil hydrology. Soils dominated with moss BSCs may have higher infiltration rates than those dominated with cyanobacteria or algal BSCs. However, it is unnown whether improved infiltration in moss BSCs is accompanied by an increase in soil hydraulic conductivity or water retention capacity. We investigated this question in the Tengger Desert, where a 43-year-old revegetation program has promoted the formation of two distinct types of BSCs along topographic positions, i.e. the moss-dominated BSCs on the interdune land and windward slopes of the fixed sand dunes, and the algal-dominated BSCs on the crest and leeward slopes. Soil water retention capacity and hydraulic conductivity were measured using an indoor evaporation method and a field infiltration method. And the results were fitted to the van Genuchten–Mualem model. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivities under greater water pressure(<–0.01 MPa) and water retention capacities in the entire pressure head range were higher for both crust types than for bare sand. However, saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivities in the near-saturation range(>–0.01 MPa) showed decreasing trends from bare sand to moss crusts and to algal crusts. | 8 | Electroacupuncture inhibits annulus fibrosis cell apoptosis in vivo via TNF-α-TNFR1-caspase-8 and integrin β1/Akt signaling pathways显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To examine whether electroacupuncture(EA) treatment inhibited cell apoptosis of intervertebral annulus fibrosis(AF) via tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)-tumor necrosis factor receptor 1(TNFR1)-caspase-8 and integrin β1/Akt signaling pathways in a rat model of cervical intervertebral disc degeneration caused by unbalanced dynamic and static forces.METHODS: Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were included in this study, of which 24 rats underwent surgery to induce cervical intervertebral disc degeneration, while eight rats received EA treatment at Dazhui(GV 14). Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect TNF-α, TNFR1, and caspase-8Apoptosis of AF cells was examined with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated d UTP-biotin nick end labeling(TUNEL) staining. The m RNA and protein expression levels of integrin β1 andAkt were evaluated with real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis, respectively.RESULTS: Treatment with EA decreased TUNEL-positive AF cells and lowered TNF-α, TNFR1 and caspase-8 positive cells compared with control groups. EA treatment also increased integrin β1and Akt m RNA and protein levels compared with controls.CONCLUSION: Treatment with EA inhibits AF cell apoptosis through suppression of the TNF-α-TNFR1-caspase-8 signal pathway and increases the expression of integrin β1 and Akt. | 11 | A New Arg54Gly Transthyretin Gene Mutation Associated with Vitreous Amyloidosis in Chinese显示文摘Purpose:To analyse the hereditary features of a Chinese pedigree with familial vitreous amyloidosis in Liaoning Province,China,and to investigate the correlation between the clinical appearance of the disease and transthyretin(TTR)gene mutation,including the locus and type of TTR gene mutation.Methods:Five patients (10 eyes) from one Chinese family were diagnosed with vitreous amyloidosis between July 1996 and April 2009.Family members were followed up subsequently,and peripheral venous blood was obtained from 13 subjects (including 2 patients,and 11 controls without clinical signs of disease).DNA samples were extracted and 4 exons of the TTR gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).The gene fragments were subjected to sequencing analysis.The results were analyzed with DNAMAN Windows 5.2.2.0 and Chromas sequence chart analysis software,TTR gene exons were compared between affected patients and normal controls.Results:Family pedigree analysis revealed that patients were distributed in three generations.Male and female subjects had equal prevalence,and only one parent of affected patients had signs of disease.TTR gene exon sequencing showed that the sequence of patients was identical to that of normal individuals.No TTR gene mutations were noted in 10 unaffected family members.However,a TTR Gly-54 point mutation in the 2nd exon was detected in two patients and 1 unaffected family member (one of the patients' daughters).Vitreous samples in 4 cases (7 eyes) showed positive Congo red staining,suggesting that these family members suffered from familial vitreous amyloidosis.Conclusion:This pedigree affected with familial vitreous amyloidosis was characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance;.a TTR Gly-54 point mutation in the 2nd exon is presumed to be the cause.This Gly-54 point mutation of the TTR gene is a novel mutation in vitreous amyloidosis. | Yining Shi Jing Li Jia Hu Jun Hu Lijun Sun Huijin Li Rui Shi Le Yang Ye Sun Chan Li | 2011 | Eye Science2011,26,4: | 9 |

| 20 | A Dominant Locus, qBSC-1, Controls β Subunit Content of Seed Storage Protein in Soybean(Glycine max(L.) Merri.)显示文摘Soybean seed storage protein is one of the most important plant vegetable proteins, and β subunit is of great significance to enhance soybean protein quality and processing property. F2 segregated population and residual heterozygous lines(RHL) derived from the cross between Yangyandou(low level of β subunit) and Zhonghuang 13(normal level of β subunit) were used for mapping of β subunit content. Our results showed that β subunit content was controlled by a single dominant locus, qBSC-1(β subunit content), which was mapped to a region of 11.9 cM on chromosome 20 in F2 population of 85 individuals. This region was narrowed down to 2.5 cM between BARCSOYSSR_20_0997 and BARCSOYSSR_20_0910 in RHL with a larger population size of 246 individuals. There were 48 predicted genes within qBSC-1 region based on the reference genome(Glyma 1.0, Williams 82), including the two copies of β subunit coding gene CG4.
