| 3 | Larvicidal efficacies and chemical composition of essential oils of Pinus sylvestris and Syzygium aromaticum against mosquitoes显示文摘Objective:To assess the chemical composition and mosquito larvicidal potentials of essential oils of locally sourced Pinus sylvestris(P.sylvestris)and Syzygium aromatkum(S.aromaticum)against Aedes aegypti(A.aegypti)and Culex quinquefasciatus(C.quinquefasciatus).Method:The chemical composition of the essential oils of both plants was determined using GCMS while the larvicidal bioassay was carried out using different concentrations of the oils against the larvae of A.aegypti and C.quinquefasciatus in accordance with the standard protocol.Results:The results as determined by GC-MS showed that oil of S.aromaticum has eugenol(80.5%)as its principal constituent while P.sylvestris has 3-Cyclohexene-1-methanol,.alpha.,.alpha.4-trimethyl(27.1%)as its dominant constituent.Both oils achieved over 85%larval mortality within24 h.The larvae of A.aegypti were more susceptible to the oils[LC_(50)(S.aromaticum)=92.56 mg/L,LC_(50)(P.sylvestris)=100.39 mg/L]than C.quinquefasciatus[LC_(50)(S.aromaticum)=124.42 mg/L;LC_(50)(P.sylvestris)=128.00 mg/L].S.aromaticum oil was more toxic to the mosquito larvae than oil of P.sylvatris but the difference in lethal concentrations was insignificant(P>0.05).Condusioii:The results justify the larvicidal potentials of both essential oils and the need to incorporate them in vector management and control. | Kehinde Adenike Fayemiwo Monsuru Adebayo Adeleke Ovie Princewill Okoro Shola Hezekiah Awojide Ilias Olufemi Awoniyi | 2014 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,1: | 4 |
| 4 | Antimalarial potential of kolaviron,a biflavonoid from Garcinia kola seeds,against Plasmodium berghei infection in Swiss albino mice显示文摘Objective:To investigate the antimalarial potential of kolaviron(KV),a biflavonoid fraction from Garcinia kola seeds,against Plasmodium berghei(P.berghei)infection in Swiss albino mice.Methods:The study consists of seven groups of ten mice each.Groups I,II and III were normal mice that received com oil.KV1 and chloroquine(CQ),respectively.Groups IV,V,ⅥandⅦwere infected mice that received corn oil.CQ,KYI and KV2.respectively.CQ.KY1 and KV2were given at 10-,100-and 200-mg/kg daily,respectively for three consecutive days.Results:Administration of KV1 and KV2 significantly(P<0.05)suppressed P.berghei-infection in the mice by 85%and 90%.respectively,while CQ produced 87%suppression relative to untreated infected group after the fifth day of treatment.Also,KV2 significantly(P<0.05)increased the mean survival time of the infected mice by 175%.The biflavonoid prevented a drastic reduction in HCV from day4 of treatment,indicating its efficacy in ameliorating anaemia.Significant(P<0.05)oxidative stress assessed by the elevation of serum and hepatic malondialdehydewere observed in unlrealed P.berghei-infected mice.Specifically,senum and hepatic malondialdehyde levels increased by93%and 78%,resjiectively in the unlrealed infecled mice.Furlhennore,antioxidant indices,viz;superoxide dismutase.catalase,glutathione-s-transferasc.glualhione peroxidase and reduced gluathione decreased significantly(P<0.05)in the tissues of untreated P.berghei-infected mice.KV significantly(P<0.05)ameliorated the P.berghei-induced decrease in antioxidant status of the infected mice.Conclusions:This study shows that kolaviron,especially at 200 mg/kg,has high antimalarial activities in P.berghei-infected mice,in addition to its known antioxidant properties. | Adaramoyc Oluwatosin Akinpelu Tolulope Kosoko Ayokulchin Okoric Patricia Kehinde Aderemi Falade Catherine Ademowo Olusegun | 2014 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2014,7,2: | 2 |

| 6 | Characterization of cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon for removal of chromium and lead ions from tannery wastewater via adsorption equilibrium显示文摘In this experiment,cobalt ferrite-supported activated carbon(CF-AC)was developed and characterized via the wet impregnation method for the removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions from tannery wastewater.Batch adsorption was carried out to evaluate the effect of experimental operating conditions(pH of solution,contact time,adsorbent dose,and temperature),and the removal efficiencies of Cr and Pb(II)ions by the developed adsorbents were calculated and recorded for all experimental conditions.These variables were estimated and reported as removal efficiencies of 98.2%for Cr and 96.4%for Pb(II)ions at the optimal conditions of 5,0.8 g,80 min,and 333 K for pH,adsorbent dose,contact time,and temperature,respectively.The equilibrium for the sorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions was studied using four widely used isotherm models(the Langmuir,Freundlich,Dubinin-Radushkevich,and Temkin isotherm models).It was found that the Freundlich isotherm model fit better with the coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.9484 and a small sum of square error of 0.0006.The maximum adsorption capacities(Qm)of Pb(II)and Cr adsorbed onto CF-AC were determined to be 6.27 and 23.6 mg/g,respectively.The adsorption process conformed well to pseudo-second order kinetics as revealed by the high R2 values obtained for both metals.The thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of Cr and Pb(II)ions onto CF-AC was spontaneous,feasible,and endothermic under the studied conditions.The mean adsorption energy(E)values revealed that the adsorption mechanism of Cr and Pb(II)by CF-AC is physical in nature.The results of the study showed that adsorbent developed from CF-AC can be efficiently used as an environmentally friendly alternative adsorbent,for removal of Cr and Pb(II)ions in tannery wastewater. | Muibat Diekola Yahya Kehinde Shola Obayomi Mohammed Bello Abdulkadir Yahaya Ahmed Iyaka Adeola Grace Olugbenga | 2020 | Water Science and Engineering2020,13,3: | 2 |

| 11 | Phosphorus and nitrogen in the soil interface between two plant residues differing in C/nutrient ratio:A short-term laboratory incubation study显示文摘In studies on the effects of mixing residues with different properties on decomposition rate and nutrient release,the extent of contact between the different residues is not known.In this study,we used an experimental design where crop residues were spatially separated by a layer of soil.Microcosms were set up using young faba bean residue(low carbon(C)/nutrient ratio,L)and mature barley straw(high C/nutrient ratio,H).The microcosms comprised of two caps of PVC tubes,each filled with moist soil.Between the two caps,there were three layers each separated from the others by fine nylon mesh with the middle layer being the moist interface soil.Microcosms had similar(H/H or L/L)or different(L/H)residue types,or only residue type(H/S or L/S)while the other cap had no residue.In treatments with only one residue,measured parameters,except microbial biomass P(MBP),were higher in L/S than H/S.In treatments with two residues,all parameters were lowest in H/H.In L/H compared to L/L after 14 days,available P and microbial biomass N(MBN)were lower,available N was similar and MBP was higher.After 28 days,available P and N were lower in L/H than L/L,but MBP and MBN did not differ.In L/H,measured resin P,MBP and MBN were higher than expected whereas available N was lower.The experimental design used in this study allows assessing the effect of residues on properties of the soil between them. | Kehinde O.Erinle Petra Marschner | 2020 | Soil Ecology Letters2020,2,3: | 1 |
