1Breeding high-yield superior quality hybrid super rice by rational design显示文摘The challenge of meeting the increasing demand for worldwide rice production has driven a sustained quest for advances in rice breeding for yield. Two breakthroughs that led to quantum leaps in productivity last century were the introduction of semidwarf varieties and of hybrid rice. Subsequent gains in yield have been incremental. The next major leap in rice breeding is now upon us through the application of rational design to create defined ideotypes. 3ζ-Carotene Isomerase Suppresses Tillering in Rice through the Coordinated Biosynthesis of Strigolactone and Abscisic Acid显示文摘Rice tillering is an important agronomic trait affecting grain yield.Here,we identified a high-tillering mutant tillering20(t20),which could be restored to the wild type by treatment with the strigolactone(SL)analog rac-GR24.T20 encodes a chloroplast ζ-carotene isomerase(Z-ISO),which is involved in the biosynthesis of ca-rotenoids and their metabolites,SL and abscisic acid(ABA).The t20 mutant has reduced SL and ABA,raising the question of how SL and ABA biosynthesis is coordinated,and whether they have overlapping functions in tillering.We discovered that rac-GR24 stimulated T20 expression and enhanced all-trans-p-carotene biosynthesis.Importantly,rac-GR24 also stimulated expression of Oryza sativa 9-CIS-EPOXY-CAROTENOID DIOXYGENASE 1(OsNCED1)through induction of Oryza sativa HOMEOBOX12(0sHOX12),promoting ABA biosynthesis in shoot base.On the other hand,ABA treatment significantly repressed SL biosynthesis and the ABA biosynthetic mutants displayed elevated SL biosynthesis.ABA treatment reduced the number of basal tillers in both t20 and wild-type plants.Furthermore,while ABA-deficient mu-tants aba1 and aba2 had the same number of basal tillers as wild type,they had more unproductive upper tillers at maturity.This work demonstrates complex interactions in the biosynthesis of carotenoid,SLs and ABA,and reveals a role for ABA in the regulation of rice tillering.Xue Liu Qingliang Hu Jijun Yan Kai Sun Yan Liang Meiru Jia Xiangbing Meng Shuang Fang Yiqin Wang Yanhui Jing Guifu Liu Dianxing Wu Chengcai Chu Steven M.Smith Jinfang Chu Yonghong Wang Jiayang Li Bing Wang 2020Molecular Plant2020,13,12:11

10Proton-Resistant Quantum Dots: Stability in Gastrointestinal Fluids and Implications for Oral Delivery of Nanoparticle Agents显示文摘Semiconductor quantum dots(QDs)have shown great promise as fluorescent probes for molecular,cellular and in vivo imaging.However,the fluorescence of traditional polymer-encapsulated QDs is often quenched by proton-induced etching in acidic environments.This is a major problem for applications of QDs in the gastrointestinal tract because the gastric(stomach)environment is strongly acidic(pH 12).Here we report the use of proton-resistant surface coatings to stabilize QD fl uorescence under acidic conditions.Using both hyperbranched polyethylenimine(PEI)and its polyethylene glycol derivative(PEG-grafted PEI),we show that the fl uorescence of coreshell CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs is effectively protected from quenching in simulated gastric fluids.In comparison,amphiphilic lipid or polymer coatings provide no protection under similarly acidic conditions.The proton-resistant QDs are found to cause moderate membrane damage to cultured epithelial cells,but PEGylation(PEG grafting)can be used to reduce cellular toxicity and to improve nanoparticle stability.Aaron M.Mohs Hongwei Duan Brad A.Kairdolf Andrew M.Smith Shuming Nie 2009Nano Research2009,2,6:2

12Tailoring spin mixtures by ion-enhanced Maxwell magnetic coupling in colortunable organic electroluminescent devices显示文摘In this work,we show that the spin dynamics of excitons can be dramatically altered by Maxwell magnetic field coupling,together with an ion-enhanced,low-internal-splitting-energy organic semiconducting emitter.By employing a unique,alternating current(AC)-driven organic electroluminescent(OEL)device architecture that optimizes this magnetic field coupling,almost complete control over the singlet-to-triplet ratio(from fluorescent to phosphorescent emission in a single device)is realized.We attribute this spin population control to magnetically sensitive polaron–spin pair intersystem crossings(ISCs)that can be directly manipulated through external driving conditions.As an illustration of the utility of this approach to spin-tailoring,we demonstrate a simple hybrid(double-layer)fluorescence–phosphorescence(F–P)device using a polyfluorene-based emitter with a strong external Zeeman effect and ion-induced long carrier diffusion.Remarkable control over de-excitation pathways is achieved by controlling the device-driving frequency,resulting in complete emission blue–red color tunability.Picosecond photoluminescence(PL)spectroscopy directly confirms that this color control derives from the magnetic manipulation of the singlet-totriplet ratios.These results may pave the way to far more exotic organic devices with magnetic-field-coupled organic systems that are poised to usher in an era of dynamic spintronics at room temperature.Junwei Xu Yue Cui Gregory M.Smith Peiyun Li Chaochao Dun Linqi Shao Yang Guo Hongzhi Wang Yonghua Chen David L.Carroll 2018Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1:2
13Microstructure segmentation with deep learning encoders pre-trained on a large microscopy dataset显示文摘This study examined the improvement of microscopy segmentation intersection over union accuracy by transfer learning from a large dataset of microscopy images called MicroNet.Many neural network encoder architectures were trained on over 100,000 labeled microscopy images from 54 material classes.These pre-trained encoders were then embedded into multiple segmentation architectures including UNet and DeepLabV3+to evaluate segmentation performance on created benchmark microscopy datasets.Compared to ImageNet pre-training,models pre-trained on MicroNet generalized better to out-of-distribution micrographs taken under different imaging and sample conditions and were more accurate with less training data.When training with only a single Ni-superalloy image,pre-training on MicroNet produced a 72.2%reduction in relative intersection over union error.These results suggest that transfer learning from large in-domain datasets generate models with learned feature representations that are more useful for downstream tasks and will likely improve any microscopy image analysis technique that can leverage pre-trained encoders.Joshua Stuckner Bryan Harder Timothy M.Smith 2022npj Computational Materials2022,,1:2

20Epidemiology of ocular surface squamous neoplasia in veterans: a retrospective casecontrol study显示文摘Background:A number of risk factors have been evaluated in ocular surface squamous neoplasia,but few studies have assessed risk factors specific to the armed forces veteran population.Methods:We conducted a retrospective case-control study on 55 patients and 55 age-matched controls with biopsy-proven ocular surface squamous neoplasia from the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital Eye Clinic to investigate potential risk factors encountered by veterans,including service-specific exposures.Veteran-specific risk factors included ionizing radiation exposure,Agent Orange exposure,deployment to Southwest Asia,and exposure to the series of biochemical warfare tests known as Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense.Data was analyzed with SPSS(SPSS Inc.,Chicago,IL)using t-tests,chi-squared,and logistic regression analysis,with a p-value of<0.05 considered statistically significant.Results:The strongest risk factor for ocular surface squamous neoplasia was lifetime sun exposure both directly assessed via historical quantification of exposure by dermatology practitioners(Odds Ratio(OR)5.4,95%Confidence Interval(CI)2.27–12.847,p<0.005),and using the surrogate markers of basal cell carcinoma(OR 3.157,95%CI 1.286–7.748,p=0.010)and pingueculae(OR 5.267,95%CI 2.104–13.186,p<0.005).Of the veteran-specific risk factors,Agent Orange exposure and Southwest Asia deployment were not associated with an increased risk of ocular surface squamous neoplasia.Exposure to ionizing radiation and involvement in Project Shipboard Hazard and Defense were not documented among any cases or controls.Conclusions:The results of our study are consistent with prior established risk factors,namely highlighting the important role of sun exposure in ocular surface squamous neoplasia among veterans.Logan M.Smith Shiv Lamba Carol L.Karp Anat Galor 2019Eye and Vision2019,6,1:1
