1Relationship between HER-2 overexpression and brain metastasis in esophageal cancer patients显示文摘AIM:To study if HER-2 overexpression by locally advanced esophageal cancers increase the chance of brain metastasis following esophagectomy.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of esophageal cancer patients who underwent esophagectomy at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics between 2000 and 2010.Data analyzed consisted of demographic and clinical variables.The brain metastasis tissue was assayed for HER-2 overexpression utilizing the FDA approved DAKO Hercept Test.RESULTS:One hundred and forty two patients were reviewed.Median age was 64 years(36-86 years).Eighty eight patients(62%) received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.Pathological complete and partial responses were achieved in 17(19%) and 71(81%) patients.Cancer relapsed in 43/142(30%) patients.The brain was the first site of relapse in 9/43 patients(21%,95% CI:10%-36%).HER-2 immunohistochemistry testing of the brain metastasis tissue showed that 5/9(56%) cases overexpressed HER-2(3+ staining).CONCLUSION:HER-2 overexpression might be associated with increased risk of brain metastasis in esophageal cancer patients following esophagectomy.Further studies will be required to validate this observation.Taher Abu Hejleh Barry R DeYoung Eric Engelman Jeremy M Deutsch Bridget Zimmerman Thorvardur R Halfdanarson Daniel J Berg Kalpaj R Parekh William R Lynch Mark D Iannettoni Sudershan Bhatia Gerald Clamon 2012World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2012,4,5:5

6Atom-economic synthesis of an oligomeric P/N-containing fire retardant towards fire-retarding and mechanically robust polylactide biocomposites显示文摘Renewable and biodegradable polylactide (PLA) has excellent mechanical strength but is highly flammable which restricts its practical applications. Many phosphorus/nitrogen (P/N)-based flame retardants are ef- fective in PLA, but their high addition loading usually decreases the mechanical strength of the PLA bulk. For polyphosphoramides, despite high fire-retardant efficiency, their chemical synthesis often generates chemical wastes as byproducts. Herein, we report an atom-economic and highly efficient oligomeric P/N fire retardant (APN) prepared using a mild Michael addition polymerization with no byproducts. Using only 3 wt% APN, the resulting PLA exhibits desired fire retardancy including a UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index of 37.6%. Furthermore, the toughness of the fire-retardant PLA increases by 85% compared to pure PLA, with both tensile strength and thermal stability preserved. 14Combined influence of basal media and fibroblast growth factor on the expansion and differentiation capabilities of adipose-derived stem cells显示文摘Background: Interest in adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) has increased in recent years due to their multi-linagedifferentiation capabilities. While much work has been done to optimize the differentiation media, few studies havefocused on examining the influence of different expansion media on cell behavior. In this study, three basal media(low glucose Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM), high glucose DMEM and DMEM-F12) supplementedwith or without fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF) were examined to assess their suitability for expanding ASCs.Findings: Flow cytometry, colony-forming unit assays (CFU-Fs) and differentiation assays were utilized to study cellbehavior. High glucose media CFU-Fs produced fewest colonies while the addition of FGF increased colony size.By passage 2, the majority of cells were positive for CD44, 45, 73, 90 and 105 and negative for CD14, 31 and 45,indicating a mesenchymal phenotype. A sub-population of CD34 positive cells was present among passage 2 cells;however, by passage 4 the cells were negative for CD34. FGF has a negative effective on passage 4 ASC adipogenesisand high glucose media plus FGF-enhanced osteogenic capacity of passage 4 ASCs. FGF supplemented basal mediawere most suitable for chondrogenesis. High glucose media plus FGF appeared to be the most beneficial for primingASCs to induce a keratocyte phenotype.Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the reciprocal effect FGF and basal media have on ASCs. 15Fire-retardant, anti-dripping, biodegradable and biobased polyurethane elastomers enabled by hydrogen-bonding with cellulose nanocrystals显示文摘Thermoplastic polyurethane(PU)elastomers have attracted significant attention because of their many important industrial applications.However,the creation of fire-retardant and anti-dripping PU elastomers has remained a grant challenge due to the lack of crosslinking and weak interchain interactions.Herein,we report a mechanically robust,biodegradable,fire-retardant,and anti-dripping biobased PU elastomer with excellent biodegradability using an abietic acid-based compound as hard segments and polycaprolactone diol(PCL)as soft segments,followed by physically crosslinking with cellulose nanocrystals(CNC)through dynamic hydrogen-bonding.The resultant elastomer shows the balanced mechanical and fire-retardant properties,e.g.,a tensile strength and break strain of 9.1 MPa and 560%,a self-extinguishing ability(V-0 rating in UL-94 testing),and an anti-dripping behavior.Moreover,the as-developed PU can be completely degraded in 1.0 wt.%lipase solution at 37℃ in 60 days,arising from the catalytic and wicking effect of CNC on PU chains.This work provides an innovative and versatile strategy for constructing robust,fire-retardant,anti-dripping,and biodegradable PU elastomers,which hold great promise for practical applications in electronic and automobile sectors.Yijiao Xue Tianchen Zhang Hong Peng Zhewen Ma Meng Zhang Mark Lynch Toan Dinh Zhezhe Zhou Yonghong Zhou Pingan Song 2024Nano Research2024,17,3:0
