| 1 | Recent glacial retreat in High Asia in China and its impact on water resource in Northwest China显示文摘Under the impact of climatic warming, the glaciers in the High Asia in China have been retreating continuously with negative glacial mass balance in recent several decades. The retreat became more intensive in the past 10 years. The spatial pattern of the glacial retreat in the High Asia in China is that the smallest magnitude of retreat is in the inland of the Tibetan Plateau, the magnitude increases from the inland to the margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and the largest magnitude at the margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The glacial retreat in the High Asia in China has an important impact on the water resource of the arid regions in Northwest China. This study shows that the glacial retreat in the 1990s has caused an increase of 5.5% in river runoff in Northwest China. | 2 | A novel advanced oxidation process to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater:Microwave-activated persulfate oxidation显示文摘This article,for the first time,provides a novel advanced oxidation process based on sulfate radical(SO4. -) to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater:microwave(MW)-activated persulfate oxidation(APO)with or without active carbon(AC).Azo dye acid Orange 7(AO7)is used as a model compound to investigate the high reactivity of MW-APO.It is found that AO7(up to 1000 mg/L)is completely decolorized within 5-7 min under an 800 W MW furnace assisted-APO.In the presence of chloride ion(up to 0.50 mol/L),the decolorization is still 100%completed,though delayed for about 1-2 min.Experiments are made to examine the enhancement by AC.It is exciting to find that the 100%decolorization of AO7(500 mg/L)is achieved within 3 min by MW-APO using 1.0 g/L AC as catalyst,while the degradation effciency maintains at 50%by MW energy without persulfate after about 5 min.Besides the destruction of visible light chromophore band of AO7(484 nm),during MW-APO,two bands in the ultraviolet region(228 nm and 310 nm)are rapidly broken down.The removal of COD is about 83%-95%for 500 mg/L AO7.SO4. -is identified with quenching studies using specific alcohols.Both SO4. -and.OH could degrade AO7,but SO 4 .-plays the dominant role.In a word,MW-APO AC is a new catalytic combustion technology for destruction of organic contamination even for high concentration. | YANG Shiying WANG Ping YANG Xin WEI Guang ZHANG Wenyi SHAN Liang | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,9: | 41 |
| 3 | Autophagy activation aggravates neuronal injury in the hippocampus of vascular dementia rats显示文摘It remains unclear whether autophagy affects hippocampal neuronal injury in vascular dementia. In the present study, we investigated the effects of autophagy blockade on hippocampal neuronal injury in a rat model of vascular dementia. In model rats, hippocampal CA1 neurons were severely damaged, and expression of the autophagy-related proteins beclin-1, cathepsin B and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 was elevated compared with that in sham-operated animals. These responses were suppressed in animals that received a single intraperitoneal injection of wortmannin, an autophagy inhibitor, prior to model establishment. | 4 | Investigation of quality of life in patients with lung cancer by the EORTC QLQ-C30(V3.0) Chinese version显示文摘Objective To explore quality of life(QOL) and its influencing factors in patients with lung cancer.Methods A QOL questionnaire(European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer [EORTC] Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 [QLQ-C30] Chinese version) was used with 138 patients with lung cancer participating in the study. A statistical description of the general characteristics of the patients with lung cancer was performed. The patients' QLQ-C30 scores were compared with the reference value for each dimension. To analyze the influence of QOL in different genders, age groups, and cancer stages, ttests and rank sum tests were used to compare the differences in QOL using a 5% significance level. Results The QLQ-C30 function scores in PF(physical functioning), EF(emotional functioning), SF(social functioning), and GH(global functioning), and symptom scales in NV(nausea and vomiting), DY(dyspnea), SL(insomnia), and FI(financial difficulties) were significantly different(P < 0.05) in comparison to the reference values. Female patients were worse than males(P < 0.05) in EF, NV, and DI(diarrhea). The later the stage of lung cancer, the worse the quality of life became; the functional scales in RF(role functioning), EF, CF, SF, and GH, and symptom scales in PA(pain), AP(appetite), and SL differences were statistically significant(P < 0.05). | 5 | Identification and functional annotation of novel microRNAs in the proximal sciatic nerve after sciatic nerve transection显示文摘The peripheral nervous system is able to regenerate after injury, and regeneration is associated with the expression of many genes and proteins. MicroRNAs are evolutionarily conserved, small, non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at the level of translation. In this paper, we focus on the identification and functional annotation of novel microRNAs in the proximal sciatic nerve after rat sciatic nerve transection. Using Solexa sequencing, computational analysis, and quantitative reverse transcription PCR verification, we identified 98 novel microRNAs expressed on days 0, 1, 4, 7, and 14 after nerve transection. Furthermore, we predicted the target genes of these microRNAs and analyzed the biological processes in which they were involved. The identified biological processes were consistent with the known time-frame of peripheral nerve injury and repair. During the last 18 years, we have seen an increasing allocation of resources to palliative care, the establishment of an academic chair in palliative medicine, and more focused interest and awareness of the need for palliative care in the society at large. So the doctors in China have established principles of treatment on clinical diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumor bone metastases and bone related complications. In order to share our experience with the world, after two years’ preparation, the top-level experts in palliative medicine have written the consensus statement on clinical diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumor bone metastases and bone related complications. The overview includes not only the achievements in the world, but the hands-on experience in clinic, especially the experience in combination of TCM and Western medicine. | 11 | Threshold pressure gradient of fluid flow through multi-porous media in low and extra-low permeability reservoirs显示文摘After analyzing many studies of fluid flow theory of multi-porous media in low and extra-low permeability reservoirs and the numerical simulation of non-Darcy flow, we found that a negative flow rate occurs in the existing non-Darcy flow equation, which is unreasonable. We believe that the existing equation can only be considered as a discriminant to judging Darcy flow or non-Darcy flow, and cannot be taken as a fluid flow governing equation of multi-porous media. Our analysis of the experimental results shows that the threshold pressure gradient(TPG) of low and extra-low permeability reservoirs is excessively high, and does not conform to fluid flow through multi-porous media in the actual reservoir situation. Therefore, we present a reasonable TPG ranging from 0.006 to 0.04 MPa/m at the well depth of 1500 m and oil drainage distance of 500 m. The results of our study also indicate that the non-Darcy flow phenomenon will disappear when the TPG reaches a certain value. In addition, the TPG or non-Darcy flow in low and extra-low permeability reservoirs does not need to be considered in the productivity prediction and reservoir numerical simulation. Hyoscyami Semen is found in local markets in China. In markets, sellers and buyers commonly inadvertently mix the seeds of H. niger with the seeds of related species such as Hygrophila salicifolia(Vahl) Nees, Astragalus complanatus R. Br., Cuscuta australis R. Br., Cuscuta chinensis Lam., and Impatiens balsamina L. because of their similar morphologies or similar names. Thus, developing a reliable method for discriminating H. niger seeds from its adulterants is necessary to reduce confusion and ensure the safe use of Hyoscyami Semen. The present study was designed to evaluate the efficiency of high-resolution melting analysis combined with DNA barcoding(Bar-HRM) with internal transcribed spacer 2 to discriminate H. niger. Our results show that Bar-HRM successfully identified the adulterants and detected the proportion of H. niger DNA extract within an admixture. In particular, HRM detected H. niger DNA extract in A. complanatus DNA extract at concentrations as low as 1%. In conclusion, the Bar-HRM method developed in the present study for authenticating H. niger is rapid and cost-effective.
