| 1 | New eolian red clay sequence on the western Chinese Loess Plateau linked to onset of Asian desertification about 25 Ma ago显示文摘The expansion of inland Asia deserts has considerably influenced the environmental, social and economic activities in Asia. Aridification of inland Asia, especially timing of the initiation of Asian desertification, is a contentious topic in paleoclimatology. Late Cenozoic eolian loess-red clay sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau, which possess abundant paleoclimatic and paleo-environmental information, can be regarded as an indicator of inland Asia desertification. Here we present a detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation of a new red clay sequence about 654 m in Zhuanglang located at the western Chinese Loess Plateau. Sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, and quartz morphological lines of evidence show that the red clay is of eolian origin. Magnetostratigraphic correlations indicate that this core sequence spans from 25.6 to 4.8 Ma, and typical eolian red clay appears as early as 25 Ma. This extends the lower limit of the red clay on the Chinese Loess Plateau from the previously thought early Miocene back into the late Oligocene. This new red clay record further implies that the inland Asia desertification was initiated at least by the late Oligocene. | 3 | Development and validation of an endoscopic images-based deep learning model for detection with nasopharyngeal malignancies显示文摘Background:Due to the occult anatomic location of the nasopharynx and frequent presence of adenoid hyperpla-sia,the positive rate for malignancy identification during biopsy is low,thus leading to delayed or missed diagnosis for nasopharyngeal malignancies upon initial attempt.Here,we aimed to develop an artificial intelligence tool to detect nasopharyngeal malignancies under endoscopic examination based on deep learning.Methods:An endoscopic images-based nasopharyngeal malignancy detection model(eNPM-DM)consisting of a fully convolutional network based on the inception architecture was developed and fine-tuned using separate training and validation sets for both classification and segmentation.Briefly,a total of 28,966 qualified images were collected.Among these images,27,536 biopsy-proven images from 7951 individuals obtained from January 1st,2008,to December 31st,2016,were split into the training,validation and test sets at a ratio of 7:1:2 using simple randomiza-tion.Additionally,1430 images obtained from January 1st,2017,to March 31st,2017,were used as a prospective test set to compare the performance of the established model against oncologist evaluation.The dice similarity coef-ficient(DSC)was used to evaluate the efficiency of eNPM-DM in automatic segmentation of malignant area from the background of nasopharyngeal endoscopic images,by comparing automatic segmentation with manual segmenta-tion performed by the experts.Results:All images were histopathologically confirmed,and included 5713(19.7%)normal control,19,107(66.0%)nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC),335(1.2%)NPC and 3811(13.2%)benign diseases.The eNPM-DM attained an overall accuracy of 88.7%(95%confidence interval(CI)87.8%-89.5%)in detecting malignancies in the test set.In the prospective comparison phase,eNPM-DM outperformed the experts:the overall accuracy was 88.0%(95%CI 86.1%-89.6%)vs.80.5%(95%CI 77.0%-84.0%).The eNPM-DM required less time(40 s vs.110.0±5.8 min)and exhibited encouraging performance in automatic segmentation of nasopharyngeal malignant area from the background,with an average DSC of 0.78±0.24 and 0.75±0.26 in the test and prospective test sets,respectively.Conclusions:The eNPM-DM outperformed oncologist evaluation in diagnostic classification of nasopharyngeal mass into benign versus malignant,and realized automatic segmentation of malignant area from the background of nasopharyngeal endoscopic images. | Chaofeng Li Bingzhong Jing Liangru Ke Bin Li Weixiong Xia Caisheng He Chaonan Qian Chong Zhao Haiqiang Mai Mingyuan Chen Kajia Cao Haoyuan Mo Ling Guo Qiuyan Chen Linquan Tang Wenze Qiu Yahui Yu Hu Liang Xinjun Huang Guoying Liu Wangzhong Li Lin Wang Rui Sun Xiong Zou Shanshan Guo Peiyu Huang Donghua Luo Fang Qiu Yishan Wu Yijun Hua Kuiyuan Liu Shuhui Lv Jingjing Miao Yanqun Xiang Ying Sun Xiang Guo Xing Lv | 2018 | Cancer Communications2018,38,1: | 9 |
| 4 | Functional characterization of the NF-kB binding site in the human NOD2 promoter显示文摘Nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain 2(NOD2),a member of the NOD protein family,plays an important role in innate immunity.In response to pathogen attack,NOD2 stimulates cytokine and defensin production by activating nuclear factor(NF)-kB,a key transcription factor responsible for mediating downstream reactions.However,the mechanism linking NOD2 regulation and NF-kB activation is poorly understood.Using bioinformatics,we found a completely preserved canonical NF-kB binding site in the NOD2 core promoter(216 to 225 bp)in both humans and chimpanzees.The functional role of this NF-kB binding site was investigated using the enhanced green fluorescent protein(EGFP)reporter system,site-directed mutagenesis,the NF-kB activation inhibitor(JSH-23)and the chromatin immunoprecipitation(ChIP)assay.The results show that the NF-kB binding site is critical for regulation of the NOD2 gene.Either deletion of the NF-kB binding elements within the NOD2 promoter or treatment with an NF-kB activation inhibitor could lead to a significant loss of NOD2 promoter activity as detected by reporter gene assay.The canonical NF-kB binding site was bound by NF-kB as determined by the ChIP method.Based on these results,we suggest a positive feedback regulation between NF-kB and NOD2,which may represent an efficient mechanism in response to pathogen invasion. | Chaofeng Hu Liping Sun Yiling Hu Daxiang Lu Huadong Wang Suisheng Tang | 2010 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2010,7,4: | 3 |
| 5 | The deep structure of the Duanqiao hydrothermal field at the Southwest Indian Ridge显示文摘Polymetalic sulfide is the main product of sea-floor hydrothermal venting, and has become an important sea-floor mineral resources for its rich in many kinds of precious metal elements. Since 2007, a number of investigations have been carried out by the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association(COMRA)cruises(CCCs) along the Southwest Indian Ridge(SWIR). In 2011, the COMRA signed an exploration contract of sea-floor polymetallic sulfides of 10 000 km2 on the SWIR with the International Seabed Authority. Based on the multibeam data and shipborne gravity data obtained in 2010 by the R/V Dayang Yihao during the leg 6 of CCCs21, together with the global satellite surveys, the characteristics of gravity anomalies are analyzed in the Duanqiao hydrothermal field(37°39′S, 50°24′E). The 'subarea calibration' terrain-correcting method is employed to calculate the Bouguer gravity anomaly, and the ocean bottom seismometer(OBS) profile is used to constrain the two-dimensional gravity anomaly simulation. The absent Moho in a previous seismic model is also calculated.The results show that the crustal thickness varies between 3 and 10 km along the profile, and the maximum crustal thickness reaches up to 10 km in the Duanqiao hydrothermal field with an average of 7.5 km. It is by far the most thicker crust discovered along the SWIR. | 7 | Association of the Platelet Glycoprotein Ia C807T Gene Polymorphism With Risk of Myocardial Infarction in Chinese显示文摘Objectives To investigate the relationship of the GPIa C807T dimorphism to the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in Chinese. Methods We did a case-control study including 100 patients and 110 controls with same race. An allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for genotyping of C807T polymorphism. Results An apparent association was found between the T807 allele and MI among individuals younger than the mean age of 60 years (odds ratio, 2.49; 95% confidence interval, 1.08~6.22). The T807 allele remained an independent risk factor for MI when age, sex, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, body-mass index, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were adjusted by logistic regression. | 10 | Serum carbohydrate antigen-125 is elevated in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation显示文摘Objective: To determine whether CA-125 is elevated in medically stable patients with chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) compared with patients without AF and to examine whether levels of CA-125 are associated with demographic and clinical variables in a sample of patients under study. Methods: 55 patients with chronic AF and 58 control patients in sinus rhythm were included into the study. Patients with acute heart failure (HF), chronic inflammatory or neoplastic disease were excluded from the study. Circulating levels of CA-125 were assessed; all patients underwent clinical examination, assessment and medical records including demographic data, history of comorbid conditions, current use of cardiac medications, and the results of cardiac tests including electrocardiograms. Results: The mean age of the study sample was 53.2±6.5 years and 48% were men. Patients with sinus rhythm were significantly more likely to have lower heart rates, smaller dimensions of left atrium, and to be treated with aspirin. Coumadin, coumadin and digoxin were more often prescribed in patients with chronic AF. The CA-125 levels were significantly higher in patients with chronic AF than in patients in sinus rhythm (48.5±7.65 U/ml and 28.43±5.48 U/ml, P<0.005). An inverse relation was found between CA-125 levels and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (r=-0.48, P<0.001). CA-125 was significantly related to the left atrium (LA) diameter, left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). There was no significant correlation between CA-125 and age. | 12 | Plasma-tungsten interactions in experimental advanced superconducting tokamak(EAST)显示文摘Tungsten(W)is used as the armor material of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor(ITER)divertor and is regarded as the potential first wall material of future fusion reactors.One of the key challenges for the successful application of W in fusion devices is effective control of W at an extremely low concentration in plasma.Understanding and control of W erosion are not only a prerequisite for W impurity control,but also vital concerns to plasma-facing component(PFC)lifetime.Since the application of ITER-like water-cooled full W divertor in EAST in 2014,great efforts were made to inves-tigate W erosion by experiment and simulation.A spectroscopic system was developed to provide a real-time measurement of W sputtering source.Both experiment and simulation results indicate that carbon(C)is the dominant impurity causing W sputtering in L-mode plasmas,which comes from the erosion of C plasma-facing material(PFM)in the lower divertor and the main chamber limiters.The mixture layer on the surface of W PFCs formed through redeposition or the wall coating can effectively suppress W erosion.Increasing the plasma density and radiation can reduce incident ion energy,thus alleviating W sputtering.In H-mode plasmas,control of edge localized mode(ELM)via resonant magnetic perturbation(RMP)proves to be capable of suppressing intra-ELM W erosion.The experiences and lessons from the EAST W divertor are beneficial to the design,manufacturing and operation of ITER and beyond. | Fang Ding Guang-Nan Luo Xiahua Chen Hai Xie Rui Ding Chaofeng Sang Hongmin Mao Zhenhua Hu Jing Wu Zhen Sun Liang Wang Youwen Sun Jiansheng Hu 无 | 2019 | Tungsten2019,1,2: | 1 |
| 13 | First Asian fossil record of Platydictya (Amblystegiaceae) from the lower Miocene and its paleoenvironmental significance显示文摘Mosses form a diverse land plant group in modern vegetation but have rarely showed up in the fossil record compared with vascular plants. Here, we report an extraordinarily-preserved early Miocene moss fossil from the lower Laoliangdi Formation in the Pingzhuang Coal Mine in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, northern China. Although lacking rhizoids and most reproductive organs, the well-preserved fossil allows us to assign it to Platydictya cf. jungermannioides (Amblystegiaceae) based upon its detailed gross and micro-morphology. The diagnostic characteristics include a small-sized body with slender stems bearing spirally arranged ovate-lanceolate leaves that lack costae. Leaf margins are mostly partly entire and partly dentate, a few dentate, and rarely completely entire. It represents the first fossil record of Platydictya in Asia. The specific living microenvironment of the extant P. jungermannioides enriched our understanding of the early Miocene environment that was previously based upon vascular plant fossils and sedimentary lithofacies in the area. | 17 | Manipulating micro-electric field and coordination-saturated site configuration boosted activity and safety of frustrated single-atom Cu/O Lewis pair for acetylene hydrochlorination显示文摘Simultaneously boosting acetylene hydrochlorination activity and avoiding formation of explosive copper acetylide over Cu-based catalyst,which represented a promising alternative to Hg-based and noble metal catalysts,remained challenging.Herein,we fabricated a frustrated single-atom Cu/O Lewis pair catalyst(Cu/O-FLP)by coupling epoxide group(C-O-C)with atomdispersed Cu-cis-N_(2)C_(2)Cl center to address this challenge.The basic epoxy site modulated the electron-deficient state of Lewisacidic Cu center and paired with the Cu-cis-N_(2)C_(2)Cl moiety to preferentially break HCl into different electronegative Cu-Clδ-and C-O-H^(δ+)intermediates,which further induced both an extra localized electric field to polarize acetylene and a upshift of the dband center of catalyst,thereby promoting adsorption and enrichment of acetylene by enhancing the dipolar interaction between acetylene and active intermediates.Moreover,the generated Cu-Clδ-and C-O-H^(δ+)drastically reduced the energy barrier of ratelimiting step and made vinyl chloride easier to desorb from the Lewis-basic oxygen-atom site rather than traditional Lewis-acidic Cu center.These superiorities ensured a higher activity of Cu/O-FLP compared with its counterparts.Meanwhile,preferential dissociation of HCl endowed single-atom Cu with the coordination-saturated configuration,which impeded formation of explosive copper acetylide by avoiding the direct interaction between Cu and acetylene,ensuring the intrinsic safety during catalysis. | Junchen Peng Dandan Dong Zongyuan Wang Hong Yang Dongyang Qiao Qinqin Wang Wei Sun Minmin Liu Jiajun Wang Mingyuan Zhu Bin Dai Fei He Chaofeng Huang | 2023 | Nano Research2023,16,7: | 0 |
