1Enhanced secondary pollution offset reduction of primary emissions during COVID-19 lockdown in China显示文摘To control the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus(COVID-19),China imposed nationwide restrictions on the movement of its population(lockdown)after the Chinese New Year of 2020,leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions.Despite such large decreases in primary pollution,there were nonetheless several periods of heavy haze pollution in eastern China,raising questions about the well-established relationship between human activities and air quality.Here,using comprehensive measurements and modeling,we show that the haze during the COVID lockdown was driven by enhancements of secondary pollution.In particular,large decreases in NOx emissions from transportation increased ozone and nighttime NO_(3)radical formation,and these increases in atmospheric oxidizing capacity in turn facilitated the formation of secondary particulate matter.Our results,afforded by the tragic natural experiment of the COVID-19 pandemic,indicate that haze mitigation depends upon a coordinated and balanced strategy for controlling multiple pollutants.Xin Huang Aijun Ding Jian Gao Bo Zheng Derong Zhou Ximeng Qi Rong Tang Jiaping Wang Chuanhua Ren Wei Nie Xuguang Chi Zheng Xu Liangduo Chen Yuanyuan Li Fei Che Nini Pang Haikun Wang Dan Tong Wei Qin Wei Cheng Weijing Liu Qingyan Fu Baoxian Liu Fahe Chai Steven JDavis Qiang Zhang Kebin He 2021National Science Review2021,8,2:47
2Long-term precipitation change by hourly data in Haihe River Basin during 1961–2004显示文摘Hourly summer precipitation data recorded at 21 stations during 1961-2004 in the Haihe River Basin in North China were analyzed. The results show that the precipitation frequency and amount and the morning peak mainly relating to long-duration rainfall events decreased during this period, whereas the normalized afternoon peak mainly relating to short-duration events increased, which may suggest that the proportion of short-duration rainfall has increased as the total summer rainfall has decreased. For short-duration events, the mean intensity and peak intensity increased at most stations and the time to peak intensity decreased, which may be attributable to the higher thermal contrast between the warmer lower surface and cooler upper level. In the case of long-duration events, the total amount was significantly correlated with the East Asian summer monsoon index for the period 1961-2001 (correlation coefficient of 0.63). 3The 2016 Summer Floods in China and Associated Physical Mechanisms:A Comparison with 1998显示文摘The characteristics of droughts and floods in China during the summers(May–August)of 2016 and 1998 were compared in great detail,together with the associated atmospheric circulations and external-forcing factors.Following results are obtained.(1)The precipitation was mostly above normal in China in summer 2016,with two main rainfall belts located in the Yangtze River valley(YRV)and North China.Compared with 1998,a similar rainfall belt was located over the YRV,with precipitation 100%and more above normal.However,the seasonal processes of Meiyu were different.A typical'Secondary Meiyu'occurred in 1998,whereas dry conditions dominated the YRV in2016.(2)During May–July 2016,the Ural high was weaker than normal,but it was stronger than normal in 1998.This difference resulted from fairly different distributions of sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTAs)over the North Atlantic Ocean during the preceding winter and spring of the two years.(3)Nonetheless,tropical and subtropical circulation systems were much more similar in May–July of 2016 and 1998.The circulation systems in both years were characterized by a stronger than normal and more westward-extending western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH),a weaker than normal East Asian summer monsoon(EASM),and anomalous convergence of moisture flux in the mid and lower reaches of the YRV.These similar circulation anomalies were attributed to the similar tropical SSTA pattern in the preceding seasons,i.e.,the super El Ni?o and strong warming in the tropical Indian Ocean.(4)Significant differences in the circulation pattern were observed in August between the two years.The WPSH broke up in August 2016,with its western part being combined with the continental high and persistently dominating eastern China.The EASM suddenly became stronger,and dry conditions prevailed in the YRV.On the contrary,the EASM was weaker in August 1998 and the'Secondary Meiyu'took place in the YRV.The Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO)was extremely active in August 2016 and stayed in western Pacific for 25 days.It triggered frequent tropical cyclone activities and further influenced the significant turning of tropical and subtropical circulations in August2016.In contrast,the MJO was active over the tropical Indian Ocean in August 1998,conducive to the maintenance of a strong WPSH.Alongside the above oceanic factors and atmospheric circulation anomalies,the thermal effect of snow cover over the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau from the preceding winter to spring in 2016 was much weaker than that in 1998.This may explain the relatively stronger EASM and more abundant precipitation in North China in 2016than those in 1998.Yuan YUAN Hui GAO Weijing LI Yanju LIU Lijuan CHEN Bin ZHOU Yihui DING 2017Journal of Meteorological Research2017,31,2:11
4Why Is the East Asian Summer Monsoon Extremely Strong in 2018?——Collaborative Effects of SST and Snow Cover Anomalies显示文摘In 2018,summer precipitation was above normal in North and Northwest China and below normal around the Yangtze River valley,due to an extremely strong East Asian summer monsoon(EASM).The atmospheric circulation anomalies in East Asia and key external forcing factors that influence the EASM in 2018 are explored in this paper.The results show that there existed an anomalous cyclonic circulation near the Philippines,while the western Pacific subtropical high was located more northward than its normal position.In the mid–high latitudes,a negative geopotential height anomaly center was found near the Ural Mountains,suppressing the blocking activity.Under such a circulation pattern,precipitation near the Yangtze River valley decreased because local divergence and subsidence intensified,whereas precipitation in northern China increased due to large amounts of water vapor transport by anomalously strong southerly winds.Further analyses reveal that the strong EASM circulation in 2018 might result from the joint influences of several external forcing factors.The weak La Ni?a event that started from October 2017,the positive North Atlantic Tripolar mode(NAT)in spring 2018,and the reduced snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau in winter 2017/18 all collaboratively contributed to formation of the cyclonic circulation anomaly near the Philippines,leading to the extremely strong EASM.Especially,the positive NAT and the reduced Tibetan snow cover may have caused the negative geopotential height anomaly near the Ural Mountains,in favor of a strong EASM.The above external factors and their reinforcing impacts on the EASM are further verified by two groups of similar historical cases.Lijuan CHEN Wei GU Weijing LI 2019Journal of Meteorological Research2019,33,4:11
5Validation of a HRGC–ECNI/LRMS method to monitor short-chain chlorinated paraffins in human plasma显示文摘Short-chain chlorinated paraffins(SCCPs) are produced in high volume and have the high potential to pose a threat to human health. However, little information is available for SCCP contamination in human blood/plasma/serum, mainly due to the difficulty of sample preparation and quantitative analysis. A method using high resolution gas chromatography coupled with electron capture negative ionization low resolution mass spectrometry(HRGC–ECNI/LRMS) was developed and validated to measure SCCPs in human plasma. The pretreatment process included protein denaturation and lipid elimination, liquid–liquid extraction with a mixture of n-hexane/dichloromethane(1:1, V/V), and cleanup on a multilayer silica column. The blank controls, including procedural blank, vacuum blood collection tube blank, and instrumental blank, were the most pivotal points for the reliable analysis of SCCPs. The average value of procedural blanks was 9.0 ng/g; and the method detection limit(MDL), calculated as the sum of the average procedural blank value and 3 times of the standard deviation of the procedural blanks, was 12.6 ng/g plasma. The validated method was applied to measure the concentrations of the total SCCPs(∑ SCCPs) in50 plasma samples from a general population. 6An observational study of snow aging and the seasonal variation of snow albedo by using data from Col de Porte, France显示文摘An 18-year long(1993–2011) comprehensive dataset of snow and meteorological variables from Col de Porte, France is used to analyze the variation of shortwave broadband albedo with elapsed time after snowfalls(snow aging) during each snow season. The effects of air temperature, snow surface temperature and snow depth on snow albedo are investigated. An index based on the accumulation of air temperature over several consecutive days with daily mean higher than 2.5 °C is proposed to divide each snow-covered period into a dry and the following wet snow season when this index reaches 18 °C.The results indicate that snow surface albedo decreases exponentially with time in both dry and wet snow seasons.Snow albedo reduction with snow aging is small at low surface temperature and the reduction rate increases with the rise of surface temperature. However, the reduction rate is widely scattered within the observed range of temperature, implying a loose relationship between snow albedo and snow surface temperature. Snow albedo in wet snowseason is generally smaller and decreases faster than in dry snow season. 7Extremely Active Tropical Cyclone Activities over the Western North Pacific and South China Sea in Summer 2018: Joint Effects of Decaying La Nina and Intraseasonal Oscillation显示文摘In summer 2018,a total of 18 tropical cyclones(TCs)formed in the western North Pacific(WNP)and South China Sea(SCS),among which 8 TCs landed in China,ranking respectively the second and the first highest since 1951.Most of these TCs travelled northwest to northward,bringing in heavy rainfall and strong winds in eastern China and Japan.The present study investigates the impacts of decaying La Nina and intraseasonal oscillation(ISO)on the extremely active TCs over the WNP and SCS in summer 2018 by use of correlation and composite analyses.It is found that the La Nina episode from October 2017 to March 2018 led to above-normal sea surface temperature(SST)over central–western Pacific,lower sea level pressure and 500-hPa geopotential height over WNP,and abnormally strong convective activities over the western Pacific in summer 2018.These preceding oceanic thermal conditions and their effects on circulation anomalies are favorable to TC genesis in summer.Detailed examination reveals that the monsoon trough was located further north and east,inducing more TCs in northern and eastern WNP;and the more eastward WNP subtropical high as well as the significant wave train with a'-+-+'height anomaly pattern over the midlatitude Eurasia–North Pacific region facilitated the northwest to northward TC tracks.Further analyses reveal that two successively active periods of Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO)occurred in summer 2018 and the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation(BSISO)was also active over WNP,propagating northward significantly,corresponding to the more northward TC tracks.The MJO was stagnant over the Maritime Continent to western Pacific,leading to notably enhanced convection in the lower troposphere and divergence in the upper troposphere,conducive to TC occurrences.In a word,the extremely active TC activities over the WNP and SCS in summer 2018 are closely linked with the decaying La Nina,and the MJO and BSISO;their joint effects result in increased TC occurrences and the TC tracks being shifted more northwest to northward than normal.Lijuan CHEN Zhensong GONG Jie WU Weijing LI 2019Journal of Meteorological Research2019,33,4:4
8Spatiotemporal distribution and decadal change of the monthly temperature predictability limit in China显示文摘Based on the nonlinear Lyapunov exponent and nonlinear error growth dynamics, the spatiotemporal distribution and decadal change of the monthly temperature predictability limit(MTPL) in China is quantitatively analyzed. Data used are daily temperature of 518 stations from 1960 to 2011 in China. The results are summarized as follows:(1) The spatial distribution of MTPL varies regionally. MTPL is higher in most areas of Northeast China, southwest Yunnan Province, and the eastern part of Northwest China. MTPL is lower in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Huang-huai Basin.(2)The spatial distribution of MTPL varies distinctly with seasons. MTPL is higher in boreal summer than in boreal winter.(3) MTPL has had distinct decadal changes in China, with increase since the 1970 s and decrease since2000. Especially in the northeast part of the country, MTPL has significantly increased since 1986. Decadal change of MTPL in Northwest China, Northeast China and the Huang-huai Basin may have a close relationship with the persistence of temperature anomaly. Since the beginning of the 21 st century, MTPL has decreased slowly in most of the country, except for the south. 19N,O co-doped porous carbon with rich pseudocapacitive groups exhibiting superior energy density in an acidic 2.4 V Li_(2)SO_(4)electrolyte显示文摘Designing a carbon material with a unique composition and surface functional groups for offering high specific capacity in a wide voltage window is of great significance to improve the energy density for the supercapacitor in a cheap and eco-friendly aqueous electrolyte.Herein,we develop an efficient strategy to synthesize a N,O co-doped hierarchically porous carbon(NODPC-1.0)with moderate specific surface area and pore volume as well as rich heteroatoms using a deep eutectic solvent(DES)as an activator.It is found that NODPC-1.0 with a large proportion of pseudocapacitive functional groups(pyrrole-N,pyridineN and carbonyl-quinone)can work stable in an acidic 2 mol/L Li_(2)SO_(4)(pH 2.5)electrolyte,exhibiting specific capacities of 375 and 186 F/g at the current densities of 1.0 and 100 A/g,respectively.Also,the assembled symmetric capacitor using the NODPC-1.0 as the active material and 2 mol/L acidic Li_(2)SO_(4)(pH 2.5)as the electrolyte shows an outstanding energy density of 74.4 Wh/kg at a high power density of 1.44 k W/kg under a broad voltage window(2.4 V).Relevant comparative experiments indicate that H+of the acidic aqueous electrolyte plays a crucial part in enhancement the specific capacity,and the abundant pseudocapacitive functional groups on the surface of the NODPC-1.0 sample play the key role in the improvement of electrochemical cycle stability under a broad voltage window.Xiao Wang Kaixiang Zou Weijing Wu Yuanfu Deng Guohua Chen 2022Chinese Chemical Letters2022,33,8:0
