| 1 | Environmental changes reflected by n-alkanes of lake core in Nam Co on the Tibetan Plateau since 8.4 kaB.P.显示文摘The n-alkanes are extracted from NMLC-1 core that was drilled in the Nam Co, central Tibet. They are measured by using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) for componential and quantitative analyses. According to the constructed depth-age model, the component and concentration of n-alkanes, together with total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and carbonate are used to elu- cidate palaeoenvironmental changes of Nam Co during the past 8.4 ka. The results indicate that Holo- cene environment performs three stages in the lake area. In the stage of 8.4―6.7 kaB.P., it was warmer while precipitation slightly increased. This stage was ended by an obvious cold/dry event. During 6.7― 5.8 kaB.P., temperature increased rapidly and reached its maximum values at about 6.0 kaB.P. The environments were warm/wet optimum for the blooming of terrestrial plants and submerged aquatic plants. After that, temperature decreased continuously and showed the lowest values at about 3.0 kaB.P. From 2.9 kaB.P. to the present, temperature rose again but alternated with cold and warm. The lake area tended to be dry after 1.4 kaB.P. | 3 | Resilience-based retrofitting of existing urban RC-frame buildings using seismic isolation显示文摘The improvement of the seismic resilience of existing reinforced-concrete(RC) frame buildings, which is essential for the seismic resilience of a city, has become a critical issue. Although seismic isolation is an effective method for improving the resilient performance of such buildings, target-oriented quantitative improvements of the resilient performance of these buildings have been reported rarely. To address this gap, the seismic resilience of two existing RC frame buildings located in a high seismic intensity region of China were assessed based on the Chinese Standard for Seismic Resilience Assessment of Buildings. The critical engineering demand parameters(EDPs) affecting the seismic resilience of such buildings were identified. Subsequently, the seismic resilience of buildings retrofitted with different isolation schemes(i.e., yield ratios) were evaluated and compared, with emphasis on the relationships among yield ratios, EDPs, and levels of seismic resilience. Accordingly, to achieve the highest level of seismic resilience with respect to the Chinese standard, a yield ratio of 3% was recommended and successfully applied to the target-oriented design for the seismic-resilience improvement of an existing RC frame building. | 4 | Hydrodynamic process of Tibetan Plateau lake revealed by grain size:Case study of Pumayum Co显示文摘Under the background of global warming,some lakes on the Tibetan Plateau(TP) are potentially sensitive to temperature change.With a case study of Pumayum Co,where glacier meltwater is important to supply(we call this a glacier-fed lake hereafter),we analyze the sensitivity of lake sediment grain size to temperature change.This is done by resolving the modern hydrodynamic process,coupled with comparison of paleoclimatic proxies.According to the spatial distributions of parameters,percentage of grain size and the grain size frequency distribution curve,hydrodynamic processes are analyzed.Five clastic sedimentation types are thereby discriminated.In the open lake area,suspended load transport is the main transport agent.Grain Size Trend Analysis(GSTA),a sediment dynamics model,reveals a trend toward eastward transport.This indicates that the largest and glacier-fed river,the Jiaqu River,influences the entire lake(not just the subsurface alluvial fan),and that lake sediment grain size may serve as a temperature indicator.Time series comparison between grain size of a short core from the central lake and meteorological data confirms this temperature indication,which in turn shows reliability of the method discriminating the hydrodynamic process.This case study will improve the ability of paleoclimatic reconstruction using lake sediment in glacier-fed lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. | JU JianTing ZHU LiPing FENG JinLiang WANG JunBo WANG Yong XIE ManPing PENG Ping ZHEN XiaoLin LÜXinMiao | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,19: | 7 |
| 5 | How functional foods play critical roles in human health显示文摘How do functional foods affect human health?To answer this question it is important to understand what happens when food is digested and taken up by the gastrointestinal(GI)tract.The gut is a selective nutrient absorption system and the most important signal transduction and information exchange system within the body.It acts as a signal transducer,a neuroendocrine sensor,and an immunological recognition and presentation system.It is also a complex information exchange system comprising a number of signaling networks involving GI cells and cells immobilized in organs or transported in blood.The bioactivity of functional foods in vivo may be due to their effects on such networks,but this raises the question of what signaling pathways are used by non-nutrients that cannot be absorbed by the gut.The purpose of this review is to describe intestinal nutrient transportation,identify a number of widely expressed receptors and signal transduction pathways,and outline our current understanding of the mechanisms involved in health and disease.At the end of the review,a method for developing a cell communication network is described.This network is convenient for investigating the effects of oral administration of experimental medicines,drugs,or functional foods on cytokines of interest.Because cytokines and chemokines are transported via the circulatory system,a simple 2–3 mL blood sample from a volunteer is a rich source of information.This method may become the gold standard for evaluating the effects of functional foods or medicines in vivo.©2012 Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.on behalf of Beijing Academy of Food Sciences. | Guangchang Pang Junbo Xie Qingsen Chen Zhihe Hu | 2012 | Food Science and Human Wellness2012,1,1: | 4 |
| 6 | On the Unusual Holocene Carbonate Sediment in Lake Nam Co,Central Tibet显示文摘In lacustrine sediments,aragonite is a widespread mineral,whereas monohydrocalcite is a rare carbonate mineral. In the cold and high-attitude Xizang (Tibetan) Plateau,where aragonite has been commonly found in lacustrine sediments,there is no aragonite,but low-Mg calcite,monohydrocalcite and trace dolomite. The lake receives solutes primarily from surface runoffs and remains fairly constant water chemistry for a long time. The total CaCO3 percentage in sediments could be controlled by evaporation and inflow of detrital materials. The absence of aragonite is unusual when compared to other lacustrine sediments from the Tibetan Plateau. This could be due to low Ca/Mg ratio,low salinity,low Mg and Ca concentration. Monohydrocalcite might precipitate from the lake water mediated by biological activities. | 15 | Avian influenza viruses suppress innate immunity by inducingtrans-transcriptional readthrough via SSU72显示文摘Innate immunity plays critical antiviral roles. The highly virulent avian influenza viruses (AIVs) H5N1, H7N9, and H5N6 can betterescape host innate immune responses than the less virulent seasonal H1N1 virus. Here, we report a mechanism by whichtranscriptional readthrough (TRT)-mediated suppression of innate immunity occurs post AIV infection. By using cell lines, mouselungs, and patient PBMCs, we showed that genes on the complementary strand (“trans” genes) influenced by TRT were involved inthe disruption of host antiviral responses during AIV infection. The trans-TRT enhanced viral lethality, and TRT abolishmentincreased cell viability and STAT1/2 expression. The viral NS1 protein directly bound to SSU72, and degradation of SSU72 inducedTRT. SSU72 overexpression reduced TRT and alleviated mouse lung injury. Our results suggest that AIVs infection induce TRT byreducing SSU72 expression, thereby impairing host immune responses, a molecular mechanism acting through the NS1-SSU72-trans-TRT-STAT1/2 axis. | 19 | The feasibility of antitumor drugs chemosensitivity testing by flow cytometry显示文摘Objective: To investigate the feasibility of chemosensitivity testing of antitumor drugs by flow cytometry in clinical applications so as to provide experimental and theoretical basis for the establishment of a novel antitumor drugs sensitivity testing and the screening of particular antitumor drugs. Methods: Detect the apoptosis rate of 12 cases of Molt-4 cell line, 57 cases of fresh clinical gastrointestinal tumor cells by Sub-G1 and Annexin V assay of flow cytometry under the effects of antitumor drugs at different times and the outcomes were compared with the ones of the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. Results: The lethality of drugs on Molt-4 cell, clinical gastrointestinal tumor cells had a positive correlation with the acting time of antidrugs by employing Annexin V, Sub-G1 and MTT assay. Drug-incurring maximum lethality of Annexin V assay was higher than MTT colorimetric assay, that of Sub-G1 was lower than MTT assay, the virtual times of Annexin V and Sub-G1 assay were obviously earlier than that of MTT colorimetric assay. Conclusion: Annexin V and Sub-G1 assay of flow cytometry can be taken as potent protocols testing anti-tumor drug chemosensitivity.
