2Colonization of periphytic ciliated protozoa on an artificial substrate in mariculture waters with notes on responses to environmental factors显示文摘Colonization of periphytic ciliates and their usefulness for monitoring water quality were evaluated using the glass slide method in two enclosed mariculture ponds used to culture crab larva and in a natural seawater reservoir.The results revealed that(1) the ciliate species composition and colonizing process differed between the culturing ponds and the natural reservoir and(2) the dominant ciliate species showed a greater distribution in terms of both the abundance and the occurrence frequency.This study also demonstrated that structural parameters were strongly related to water conditions.For example,the abundance was positively associated with NO3-N and soluble reactive phosphate(P < 0.05),whereas the species number,species diversity and evenness were negatively correlated with nutrients(e.g.NO3-N and NH3-N) and temperature(P < 0.05).These findings support the evidence that periphytic ciliates are useful bioindicators of water quality in enclosed mariculture ecosystems.Jiqiu Li Henglong Xu Xiaofeng Lin Weibo Song 2009Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,10:3
3Characterization of marine microplankton communities of Qingdao coastal areas using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD)显示文摘Microplankton communities of three coastal sites of Qingdao,Shandong Province,China were investigated using RAPD(random amplified polymorphic DNA) molecular markers and morphological observations.Eight RAPD-primers were selected to amplify the DNA polymorphy.The genetic distances inferred from the pairwise similarities were calculated for the phylogenetic tree construction.Meantime,the traditional microscopic determination,a way of visualizing the species composition,was performed to detect the major taxa of microplanktons from all samples.Results showed that:(1) the band sharing index values were in the range of 0.504 2-0.763 2 among samples from the same sampling site at different time scales,while 0.406 5-0.685 7 among the samples from different stations at the same time scales,indicating that spatial variations of microplankton communities were more pronounced than temporal ones;(2) samples from the same station basically clustered together,corresponding to the geographic distribution of the sampling sites;(3) diversity derived from genetic and morphological data did not correspond with each other well.GAO Shan HU Xiaozhong CHEN Zigui XU Henglong YI Zhenzhen LIN Xiaofeng LI Jiqiu 2009Acta Oceanologica Sinica2009,28,1:2
4Insights into community-based bioassessment of environmental quality status using microphytobenthos in estuarine intertidal ecosystems显示文摘The feasibility of community-based bioassessment of environmental quality status was studied using microphytobenthos(MPB) in estuarine intertidal ecosystems.The sediment samples of MPB were collected monthly during a 1-year cycle(September 2006–August 2007) at four sampling stations in the Nakdong River Estuary,Korea.Environmental variables,such as salinity,radiation,grain size of sediment,Si(OH)_4(Si),nitrate(NO_3~–),nitrite(NO_2~–),ammonium(NH_4^+) and phosphates(PO_4^(3–)),were measured synchronously for comparison with biotic parameters.The statistical analyses were carried out for assessment the relationship between biotic and environmental parameters.The results showed that:(1) the MPB community structures were significant differences among four sampling stations;(2) spatial variation in the MPB communities were significantly correlated with environmental variables,especially the nutrient NH_4+ in combination with salinity and grain size;(3) three species(Navicula lacustris,Pleurosigma anglulatum and Fragilaria sp.1) were significantly correlated with nutrients and/or Si;and(4) the species richness and diversity were significantly correlated with the grain size.It is suggested that MPB communities may be used as a potentially robust bioindicator for assessing environmental quality status in estuarine intertidal ecosystems.DU Guoying CHUNG Ik kyo XU Henglong 2016Acta Oceanologica Sinica2016,35,6:2

8Temporal species distributions of planktonic protist communities in semi-enclosed mariculture waters and responses to environmental stress显示文摘In order to evaluate the relationships between temporal species succession of planktonic protists and physical-chemical parameters in semi-enclosed mariculture waters, species distributions in response to environmental stress were investigated in a shrimp-farming pond near Qingdao, China during a complete shrimp-culture cycle (May to October 2002). A clear temporal succession in species distribution was found over the complete farming cycle. For example, before the introduction of the shrimp larvae there was low-variability of species distribution in the protist communities whereas during the stages immediately after, there was higher variability in species composition. Multiple linear/logistic regression analyses demonstrate that 12 protist taxa (e.g., Gyrodinium spirale, Teleaulax acuta, Prorocentrum spp. and Mesodinium pupula) were related to the nutrients, in particular ammonia and phosphates, alone or in combination with water temperature. 10A Bioassay for the Cytotoxicity of Gemcitabine Using the Marine Ciliate Euplotes vannus显示文摘This study investigated the cytotoxicity of gemcitabine using the marine ciliate Euplotes vannus as the test organism.The median lethal concentrations(LC50 values)were determined using acute toxicity tests within an exposure time of 30 min with 0,6,12,24,and 48 mg mL^-1 gemcitabine.The median inhibition effect(IC50 value)on the growth of the ciliate cells was examined using chronic toxicity tests within 5 days(120 h)after exposure for 30 min with 0,0.7,3.5,7,and 14 mg mL^-1 gemcitabine.The 30-min LC50value was 10.66-mg mL 1.The LC50 values decreased with increasing exposure times and well fitted to the toxicity curve equation LC50=10.93+28.4e^-0.19t(R2=0.93;P<0.05,t=exposure time).The IC50 value for growth rates was 7.05 mg mL^-1,and the inhibition effect on growth rates well fitted to the model equation r%=0.8681e^-0.0782Cgem(r%means growth rate with inhibition by gemcitabine,Cgem means concentrations of gemcitabine,R^2=0.99 and P<0.05).The LC50 values of a wide range of gemcitabine concentrations could therefore be predicted for any given exposure time.These results suggest that the clinical dose of gemcitabine(20 mg mL^-1)was higher than the 30-min LC50 value,which was almost the same as the 6-min LC50 value(19.88 mg mL^-1)for E.vannus cells.The results also demonstrate that E.vannus can be used as a robust test organism for bioassays of chemotherapeutic drugs during short exposure periods.WANG Qi XU Henglong WARREN Alan 2019Journal of Ocean University of China2019,18,3:1

12Planktonic protist communities in semi-enclosed mariculture waters: temporal dynamics of functional groups and their responses to environmental conditions显示文摘The functional groups of planktonic protist communities and their responses to the changes of environmental conditions were investigated in a semi-enclosed shrimp-farming pond in Qingdao,Shandong Province,China,during a six-month study period (a complete shrimp-culture cycle) from May to October 2002.The results reveal that: (1) the protist communities represented five trophic and functional groups of the species identified,about 60% were photoautotrophs,20% algivores,12% bacterivores,5% raptors and about 3% non-selectives;(2) the photoautotrophs,algivores and bacterivores were the primary contributors to the changes in the protist communities in short temporal scales,the succession of dominance typically being bacterivores→photoautotrophs→algivores,with the raptors dominating the protist communities in a single sample (early June);(3) the photoautotrophs and non-selectives were the primary contributors to the peak of protist abundance in early October whereas the photoautotrophs,bacterivores,raptors and non-selectives mainly gave rise to two bimodal peaks of biomass in July and October respectively;(4) five functional groups of protist communities represented significant correlations with water nutrients (i.e.,NH 3-N,NO 3-N,and PO 4 ),either alone or in combination with temperature,of which algivores and raptors were strongly correlated with phosphate and the concentration of Chl a,while bacterivores were strongly related to nitrogen and the concentration of bacteria.These findings confirm that planktonic protists are potentially useful bioindicators of water quality in the semi-enclosed mariculture system.XU Henglong WARREN Alan AL-RASHEID Khaled A S ZHU Mingzhuang SONG Weibo 2010Acta Oceanologica Sinica2010,29,4:0
13Annual pattern of zooplankton communities and their environmental response in a subtropical maritime channel system in the northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh显示文摘Zooplankton plays an important role in aquatic food webs by fluxing of energy from primary producer to subsequent trophic levels in the food chain. The annual pattern of zooplankton communities and potential environmental drivers were studied in the Kohelia channel, Bangladesh from summer 2014 to spring 2015.Samples were collected using net at a depth of 1 m. A total of 32 species belonged to 18 orders, 27 families and 15 taxonomic groups were identified. Of these species, 22 distributed in all four seasons of which 8 were dominant and highly contributing to the total communities. Species number peaked in summer next to winter and fall in spring while maximum abundance was in summer and minimum in spring. Multivariate analyses showed that there was a clear annual pattern in the zooplankton communities. Species diversity and evenness peaked in spring but fall in autumn while the high value of species richness was found in winter. Biological-environmental best matching(BIO-ENV) analyses conformed that community pattern of zooplankton was mainly driven by transparency salinity, and temperature individually or combined with water nutrients. 14Colonization features of marine biofilm-dwelling protozoa in Chinese coastal waters of the Yellow Sea显示文摘Colonization features of biofilm-dwelling protozoa,especially ciliates,are routinely used as a useful tool for marine bioassessment.In this review,we summarize some of these features to develop an optimal sampling strategy for using biofilmdwelling protozoa as bioindicators of marine water quality.We focus on the utility of:(1)diversity in dices to analyze the colonizahon features of biofilm-dwelling protozoa for monitoring marine water quality;(2)MacArthur-Wilson and logistic equation models to determine spatio-temporal variations in colonization dynamics;and(3)homogeneity in taxonomic breadth of biofilm-dwelling protozoa during the process of colonization.The main findings are that:(1)the colonization dynamics of biofilm-dwelling protozoa are similar at depths of 1-5 m in spring and autumn;(2)temporal variability was well fitted to the MacArthur-Wilson and logistic models(P<0.05);and(3)species composition reached an equilibrium after a colonization period of 10-14 days in spring and autumn,but this took less time in the summer and more time in the winter.Ellipse-plotting tests demonstrated spatial variability in homogeneity in taxonomic structure of the ciiiate communities at different depths in the water column,with high levels at 1 m and 2 m and lower levels at 3.5 m and 5 m.Thus,the findings of this review suggest that the colonization dynamics of biofilin-dwelling protozoa may be influenced by different depths and seasons in coastal waters and 1-2 m in spring and autumn may be optimal sampling strategy for bioassessment on large spatial/temporal scales in marine ecosystems.Mohammad Nurul Azim Sikder Henglong Xu Alan Warren 2020Marine Life Science & Technology2020,2,3:0
15Colonization dynamics of periphytic diatoms in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, northern China显示文摘The colonization features of periphytic diatoms were studied in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, northern China from May to June 2010, using glass slides as an artificial substratum. Samples were collected at a time interval of 1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 d from two depths of 1 and 3 m. The dynamics of diatom colonization process had a similar pattern in community structure and fitted the logistic model in growth curve at both depths. The maximum abundance and the time for reaching 50% maximum abundance(10 d) showed no significant differences(P>0.05) between two depths 1 and 3 m. although the diatom communities represented similar taxonomic composition, they differed in the temporal pattern of structural parameters and in succession dynamics of dominant species between the two layers. The species richness showed significantly higher values during the colonization period more than 14 d, while the species diversity and evenness represented a higher variability with significantly different values(P<0.05) at a depth of 1 m than at a deeper layer.
