| 1 | Contrasting trends of PM2.5 and surface-ozone concentrations in China from 2013 to 2017显示文摘Although much attention has been paid to investigating and controlling air pollution in China,the trends of air-pollutant concentrations on a national scale have remained unclear.Here,we quantitatively investigated the variation of air pollutants in China using long-term comprehensive data sets from 2013 to 2017,during which Chinese government made major efforts to reduce anthropogenic emission in polluted regions.Our results show a significant decreasing trend in the PM2.5 concentration in heavily polluted regions of eastern China,with an annual decrease of〜7%compared with measurements in 2013.The measured decreased concentrations of SO2>NO2 and CO(a proxy for anthropogenic volatile organic compounds)could explain a large fraction of the decreased PM2.5 concentrations in different regions.As a consequence;the heavily polluted days decreased significantly in corresponding regions.Concentrations of organic aerosol;nitrate;sulfate,ammonium and chloride measured in urban Beijing revealed a remarkable reduction from 2013 to 2017;connecting the decreases in aerosol precursors with corresponding chemical components closely.However;surface-ozone concentrations showed increasing trends in most urban stations from 2013 to 2017;which indicates stronger photochemical pollution.The boundary-layer height in capital c让ies of eastern China showed no significant trends over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei,Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions from 2013 to 2017;which confirmed the reduction in anthropogenic emissions.Our results demonstrated that the Chinese government was successful in the reduction of particulate matter in urban areas from 2013 to 2017,although the ozone concentration has increased significantly;suggesting a more complex mechanism of improving Chinese air quality in the future. | Yonghong Wang Wenkang Gao Shuai Wang Tao Song Zhengyu Gong Dongsheng Ji Lili Wang Zirui Liu Guiqian Tang Yanfeng Huo Shili Tian Jiayun Li Mingge Li Yuan Yang Biwu Chu Tuukka Petaja Veli-Matti Kerminen Hong He Jiming Hao Markku Kulmala Yuesi Wang Yuanhang Zhang | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,8: | 51 |

| 3 | Toxicities and risk assessment of heavy metals in sediments of Taihu Lake, China, based on sediment quality guidelines显示文摘The occurrence, toxicities, and ecological risks of five heavy metals(Pb, Cu, Cd, Zn and Ni) in the sediment of Taihu Lake were investigated in this study. To evaluate the toxicities caused by the heavy metals, the toxicities induced by organic contaminants and ammonia in the sediments were screened out with activated carbon and zeolite. The toxicities of heavy metals in sediments were tested with benthic invertebrates(tubificid and chironomid).The correlations between toxicity of sediment and the sediment quality guidelines(SQGs)derived previously were evaluated. There were significant correlations(p < 0.0001) between the observed toxicities and the total risk quotients of the heavy metals based on SQGs,indicating that threshold effect level(TEL) and probable effect level(PEL) were reliable to predict the toxicities of heavy metals in the sediments of Taihu Lake. By contrast, the method based on acid volatile sulfides(AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals(SEM),such as ∑SEM/AVS and ∑SEM-AVS, did not show correlations with the toxicities. Moreover,the predictive ability of SQGs was confirmed by a total predicting accuracy of 77%. Ecological risk assessment based on TELs and PELs showed that the contaminations of Pb, Cu, Cd and Zn in the sediments of Taihu Lake were at relatively low or medium levels. | 4 | Methane emissions from rice fields under continuous straw return in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River显示文摘A three-year experiment was conducted in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China to study the influence of continuous wheat straw return during the rice season and continuous rice straw return in wheat on methane (CH 4 ) emissions from rice fields in which, the rice-wheat rotation system is the most dominant planting pattern. The field experiment was initiated in October 2009 and has continued since the wheat-growing season of that year. The analyses for the present study were conducted in the second (2011) and third (2012) rice growing seasons. Four treatments, namely, the continuous return of wheat straw and rice straw in every season (WR), of rice straw but no wheat straw return (R), of wheat straw but no rice straw return (W) and a control with no straw return (CK), were laid out in a randomized split-plot design. The total seasonal CH 4 emissions ranged from 107.4 to 491.7 kg/ha (2011) and 160.3 to 909.6 kg/ha (2012). The increase in CH 4 emissions for treatments WR and W were 289% and 230% in the second year and 185% and 225% in the third year, respectively, in relation to CK. We observed less methane emissions in the treatment R than in CK by 14%-43%, but not statistically significant. Treatment R could increase rice productivity while no more CH 4 emission occurs. | 5 | Fate of Basal N Under Split Fertilization in Rice with ^(15)N Isotope Tracer显示文摘Split fertilization strategy is popularly adopted in rice to synchronize soil nitrogen(N) supply and crop N demand. Attention has been paid more on mid-season topdressing N, but limited on basal N. A clearer understanding of the basal N fate under split fertilization is crucial for determining rational basal N split ratio to improve the yield and reduce the loss to environment. A two-year field experiment with two N rates of 150 and 300 kg Nha^(-1), two split ratios of basal N, 40% and 25%, and two rice varieties,Wuyunjing 23(japonica) and Y-liangyou 2(super hybrid indica), was conducted. Labelled ^(15) N urea was supplied in micro-plots as basal fertilizer to determine the plant uptake, translocation, soil residual, and loss of basal N fertilizer. The results showed that basal N absorbed by rice was only 1.6%–11.5% before tillering fertilization(8–10 d after transplanting), 6.5%–21.4% from tillering fertilization to panicle fertilization, and little(0.1%–4.4%) after panicle fertilization. The recovery efficiency of basal N for the entire rice growth stage was low and ranged from 18.7% to 24.8%, not significantly affected by cultivars or N treatments. Soil residual basal N accounted for 10.3%–36.4% and decreased with increasing total N rate and basal N ratio, regardless of variety and year. 43.8%–70.4% of basal N was lost into the environment based on the N balance. Basal N loss was significantly linearly positive related with the basal N rate and obviously enhanced by the increasing basal N ratio for both varieties in both 2012 and 2013. The N use efficiency and yield was significantly improved when decreasing the basal N ratio from 40% to 25%. | 6 | Blunted nitric oxide regulation in Tibetans under high-altitude hypoxia显示文摘Nitric oxide(NO) is an important molecule for vasomotor tone, and elevated NO signaling was previously hypothesized as a unique and adaptive physiological change in highland Tibetans. However, there has been lack of NO data from Tibetans living at low altitude and lowlander immigrants living at high altitude, which is crucial to test this hypothesis. Here, through cross-altitude(1990–5018 m) and cross-population(Tibetans and Han Chinese) analyses of serum NO metabolites(NOx) of 2086 individuals, we demonstrate that although Tibetans have a higher serum NOx level compared to lowlanders, Han Chinese immigrants living at high altitude show an even higher level than Tibetans. Consequently, our data contradict the previous proposal of increased NO signaling as the unique adaptive strategy in Tibetans.Instead, Tibetans have a relatively lower circulating NOx level at high altitude. This observation is further supported by data from the hypoxic experiments using human umbilical vein endothelial cells and gene knockout mice. No difference is detected between Tibetans and Han Chinese for endothelial nitric oxide synthase(e NOS), the key enzyme for circulating NO synthesis, suggesting that e NOS itself is unlikely to be the cause. We show that other NO synthesis-related genes(e.g. GCH1) carry Tibetan-enriched mutations significantly associated with the level of circulating NOx in Tibetans. | 7 | Metastatic status of sentinel lymph nodes in breast cancer determined with photoacoustic microscopy via dual-targeting nanoparticles显示文摘Detection of sentinel lymph nodes(SLNs)is critical to guide the treatment of breast cancer.However,distinguishing metastatic SLNs from normal and inflamed lymph nodes(LNs)during surgical resection remains a challenge.Here,we report a CD44 and scavenger receptor class B1 dual-targeting hyaluronic acid nanoparticle(5K-HA-HPPS)loaded with the near-infra-red fluorescent dye DiR-BOA for SLN imaging in breast cancer.The small sized(~40 nm)self-assembled 5K-HA-HPPSs accumulated rapidly in the SLNs after intradermal injection.Compared with normal popliteal LNs(N-LN),there were ~3.2-fold and ~2.4-fold increases in fluorescence intensity in tumour metastatic SLNs(T-MLN)and inflamed LNs(Inf-LN),respectively,6 h after nanoparticle inoculation.More importantly,photoacoustic microscopy(PAM)of 5KHA-HPPS showed a significantly distinct distribution in T-MLN compared with N-LN and Inf-LN.Signals were mainly distributed at the centre of T-MLN but at the periphery of N-LN and Inf-LN.The ratio of PA intensity(R)at the centre of the LNs compared with that at the periphery was 5.93±0.75 for T-MLNs of the 5K-HA-HPPS group,which was much higher than that for the Inf-LNs(R=0.2±0.07)and N-LNs(R=0.45±0.09).These results suggest that 5K-HA-HPPS injection combined with PAM provides a powerful tool for distinguishing metastatic SLNs from pLNs and inflamed LNs,thus guiding the removal of SLNs during breast cancer surgery. | Yanfeng Dai Xiang Yu Jianshuang Wei Fanxin Zeng Yiran Li Xiaoquan Yang Qingming Luo Zhihong Zhang | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 6 |

| 10 | IL-17A-dependent gut microbiota is essential for regulating diet-induced disorders in mice显示文摘The gut microbiota plays a key role in obesity and related metabolic disorders, and multiple factors including diet, host genotype, and age regulate it. Many studies have examined the contribution of extrinsic factors to the regulation of the gut microbiota, but the importance of the host genetic constitution cannot be ignored. Interleukin 17A(IL-17A), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, is important in the defense against infection and diseases. Here, we investigated the association among IL-17, a high-fat diet(HFD), and the gut microbiota. Mice deficient in IL-17A were resistant to diet-induced obesity and related diseases. Compared with the Ⅱ-17^(-/-)mice, wild-type(WT) mice challenged with HFD showed obvious weight fluctuations, such as those seen in type 2 diabetes, and hematological changes similar to those associated with metabolic syndrome. However, housing WT mice and Ⅱ-17a^(-/-)mice together significantly alleviated these symptoms in the WT mice. A metagenomic analysis of the mouse feces indicated that the microbial community compositions of these two groups differed before HFD feeding. The HFD mediated shifts in the gut microbial compositions, which were associated with the mouse phenotypes.We also identified potentially beneficial and harmful species present during this period, and drew networks of the most abundant species. A functional analysis indicated pathway changes in the WT and Ⅱ-17a^(-/-)mice when fed the HFD. | 11 | Locating Parent Lightning Strokes of Sprites Observed over a Mesoscale Convective System in Shandong Province,China显示文摘In this paper, we report the location results for the parent lightning strokes of more than 30 red sprites observed over an asymmetric mesoscale convective system(MCS) on 30 July 2015 in Shandong Province, China, with a long-baseline lightning location network of very-low-frequency/low-frequency magnetic field sensors. The results show that almost all of these cloud-to-ground(CG) strokes are produced during the mature stage of the MCS, and are predominantly located in the trailing stratiform region, which is similar to analyses of sprite-productive MCSs in North America and Europe. Comparison between the location results for the sprite-producing CG strokes and those provided by the World Wide Lightning Location Network(WWLLN) indicates that the location accuracy of WWLLN for intense CG strokes in Shandong Province is typically within 10 km, which is consistent with the result based on analysis of 2838 sprite-producing CG strokes in the continental United States. | 13 | Effects of capture and captivity on plasma corticosterone and metabolite levels in breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows显示文摘Background: Bringing free-living animals into captivity subjects them to the stress of both capture and captivity, leading to the alteration of normal physiological processes and behaviors through activation of the hypothalamic– pituitary–adrenal axis. In free-living birds, although elevated plasma corticosterone (CORT) is an important adaptation regulating physiological and behavioral responses during the process of capture and captivity stress, little information is currently available on the effects of such stress on plasma metabolite levels. Methods: We examined the effects of immediate capture and 24-h captivity on body mass, body condition, plasma CORT, and metabolite levels including glucose (Glu), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), uric acid (UA), in breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus). Results: CORT and Glu levels were increased significantly by the stress of capture, whereas TC and UA levels decreased. Body mass, body condition declined notably after 24 h in captivity, but CORT, Glu, and UA levels increased. Furthermore, male sparrows had lower TG levels after both capture and captivity than those of females. The relationships between plasma CORT and metabolite levels varied between sexes. Conclusions: Our results revealed that the metabolic status of Eurasian Tree Sparrows could be dramatically altered by capture and captivity. | 15 | Optimal yield-related attributes of irrigated rice for high yield potential based on path analysis and stability analysis显示文摘Improvement of yield in rice(Oryza sativa L.) is vital for ensuring food security in China. Both rice breeders and growers need an improved understanding of the relationship between yield and yield-related traits. New indica cultivars(53 in 2007 and 48 in 2008) were grown in Taoyuan,Yunnan province, to identify important components contributing to yield. Additionally, two standard indica rice cultivars with similar yield potentials, II You 107(a large-panicle type) and Xieyou 107(a heavy-panicle type), were planted in Taoyuan, Yunnan province and Nanjing,Jiangsu province, from 2006 to 2008 to evaluate the stability of yield and yield-related attributes.Growth duration(GD), leaf area index(LAI), panicles per m2(PN), and spikelets per m2(SM) were significantly and positively correlated with grain yield(GY) over all years. Sequential path analysis identified PN and panicle weight(PW) as important first-order traits that influenced grain yield. All direct effects were significant, as indicated by bootstrap analysis. Yield potential varied greatly across locations but not across years. Plant height(PH), days from heading to maturity(HM), and grain weight(GW) were stable traits that showed little variation across sites or years, whereas GD(mainly the pre-heading period, PHP) and PN varied significantly across locations. | 20 | Oxidation behavior of Hf-modified platinum aluminide coatings during thermal cycling显示文摘Platinum aluminide coatings with different Hf contents were fabricated by using HfCl_4. The oxidation kinetics and the rumpling behavior of oxide scale were investigated. After thermal cycling, the coating with 0.46 wt% Hf showed least weight gain. With the increase of Hf content, rumpling extent of the scale decreased. Meanwhile, HfO_2 preferentially formed in the scale resulting in the increase of scale thickness. The oxidation of excessive Hf even caused the spallation of the scale.
