| 1 | Are there new approaches for diagnosis, therapy guidance and outcome prediction of sepsis?显示文摘Beside many efforts to improve outcome, sepsis is still one of the most frequent causes of death in critically ill patients. It is the most common condition with high mortality in intensive care units. The complexity of the septic syndrome comprises immunological aspects- i.e.,sepsis induced immunosuppression- but is not restricted to this fact in modern concepts. So far, exact mechanisms and variables determining outcome and mortality stay unclear. Since there is no typical risk profile, early diagnosis and risk stratification remain difficult, which hinders rapid and effective treatment initiation. Due to the heterogeneous nature of sepsis, potential therapy options should be adapted to the individual. Biomarkers like C-reactive protein and procalcitonin are routinely used as complementary tools in clinical decision-making. Beyond the acute phase proteins, a wide bunch of promising substances and non-laboratory tools with potential diagnostic and prognostic value is under intensive investigation. So far, clinical decision just based on biomarker assessment is not yet feasible. To explain the leptocephalus strategy of larval development, various attempts have been made on the morphology, physiology and biochemistry of leptocephalus larvae. However, the feeding mechanism of leptocephalus larvae is still unknown. The Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) larvae were found to have well developed scotopic vision, mechanoreception and chemoreception. Both early and leptocephalus larvae of Japanese eel actively ingested a kind of paste food by first touching the food with their snout and then tearing off a big mouthful of the paste with their sharp teeth. Chemoreception was shown to be critical to elicit the feeding response. Feeding by Sflex posture from a distance might be of some significance for the early larvae to catch movable food. It is proposed that that the natural food of Japanese eel larvae would be relatively large, rather soft, inactive and negatively phototactic. | 7 | Statistically Extrapolated Nowcasting of Summertime Precipitation over the Eastern Alps显示文摘This paper presents a new multiple linear regression(MLR) approach to updating the hourly, extrapolated precipitation forecasts generated by the INCA(Integrated Nowcasting through Comprehensive Analysis) system for the Eastern Alps.The generalized form of the model approximates the updated precipitation forecast as a linear response to combinations of predictors selected through a backward elimination algorithm from a pool of predictors. The predictors comprise the raw output of the extrapolated precipitation forecast, the latest radar observations, the convective analysis, and the precipitation analysis. For every MLR model, bias and distribution correction procedures are designed to further correct the systematic regression errors. Applications of the MLR models to a verification dataset containing two months of qualified samples,and to one-month gridded data, are performed and evaluated. Generally, MLR yields slight, but definite, improvements in the intensity accuracy of forecasts during the late evening to morning period, and significantly improves the forecasts for large thresholds. | 13 | First determination of the highly genotoxic fungal contaminant altertoxin II in a naturally infested apple sample显示文摘Altertoxin II is an epoxide-holding perylene quinone and secondary metabolite produced by Alternaria molds.Its genotoxic potential and the high concentrations determined in laboratory fungal cultures resulted in an increased scientific interest in this emerging contaminant.However,no natural occurrence in food has been reported to date to the best of our knowledge.Here,we unambiguously identified altertoxin II in a naturally infected,unprocessed apple.Applying a validated LC-MS/MS method,fruit peel spots(approx.1 mm in diameter),typically associated with Alternaria infestation,were tested for 17 mycotoxins produced by this genus.Negligible concentrations of tentoxin were determined 24 h after harvest,and the dibenzopyrones alternariol,alternariol monomethyl ether(AME)and AME-3-sulfate after six months of storage.Overall,these contamination patterns can be considered unlikely to be of toxicological concern for consumers.However,an inconspicuous peel lesion(0.5×1 cm)separately sampled from a stored apple,exhibited considerably high concentrations of 14 Alternaria toxins,including dibenzopyrones,their barely studied modified forms(glucosides and sulfates),as well as genotoxic perylene quinones including altertoxin II.Considering the toxicological potential of this compound,contaminations in such infected fruit parts should not be underestimated,e.g.in the case of exposure through the consumption of fresh smoothies or fruit juices. | Hannes Puntscher Doris Marko Benedikt Warth | 2020 | Emerging Contaminants2020,6,1: | 2 |

| 17 | Earth orientation parameters from VLBI determined with a Kalman filter显示文摘This paper introduces the reader to our Kalman filter developed for geodetic VLBI(very long baseline interferometry) data analysis. The focus lies on the EOP(Earth Orientation Parameter) determination based on the Continuous VLBI Campaign 2014(CONT14) data, but also earlier CONT campaigns are analyzed. For validation and comparison purposes we use EOP determined with the classical LSM(least squares method) estimated from the same VLBI data set as the Kalman solution with a daily resolution. To gain higher resolved EOP from LSM we run solutions which yield hourly estimates for polar motion and dUTl = Universal Time(UT1)-Coordinated Universal Time(UTC). As an external validation data set we use a GPS(Global Positioning System) solution providing hourly polar motion results.Further, we describe our approach for determining the noise driving the Kalman filter. It has to be chosen carefully, since it can lead to a significant degradation of the results. We illustrate this issue in context with the de-correlation of polar motion and nutation.Finally, we find that the agreement with respect to GPS can be improved by up to 50% using our filter compared to the LSM approach, reaching a similar precision than the GPS solution.
