| 1 | High absorption large-mode area step-index fiber for tandem-pumped high-brightnes shigh-power lasers显示文摘A short absorption length ytterbium(Yb)-doped large-mode area(LMA)fiber is presented as a step forward to mitigate the stern problem of nonlinear scatterings in a tandem pumping scheme adopted for high-power fiber laser. The short absorption length was realized by incorporating high Yb concentration in the fiber core.Furthermore,by replacing the inherent silica cladding with a Ge-doped cladding,we were able to obtain low core numerical aperture(NA)and negate the detrimental effect of index-raising by high Yb concentrations. This overcomes the long-standing limitation in step-index Yb-doped fibers(YDFs)where high cladding absorption inevitably results in high NA,thus hampering single-mode operation. We report an LMA(~575μm^2)YDF with NA of 0.04 and absorption of 27 dB/m at 976 nm both traits promote power scaling of single-mode tandem pumped fiber lasers. To our knowledge, this is the highest cladding absorption attained in a low-NA step-index fiber to date.An all-fiber tandem-pumped amplifier was built using only^14 m of the YDF.The amplifier delivered a near-Gaussian beam(M^i.27)at 836 W output power(pump power limited)with a high slope efficiency of^83%.Thanks to the short length and the tandem pumping,no indication of limiting factors such as stimulated Raman scattering, photodarkening, and transverse mode instability was observed. | KANG-JIE LIM SAMUEL KA-WEN SEAH JOASH YONG'EN YE WENDY WEIYING LIM CHU-PERNG SEAH YUNN-BOON TAN SUTING TAN HUITING LIM RAGHURAMAN SIDHARTHAN ARUMUGAM RAJENDRA PRASADH CHEN-JIAN CHAN SEONGWOO YOO SONG-LIANG CHUA | 2020 | Photonics Research2020,8,10: | 5 |

| 8 | Prevalence of Strongyloides in Southeast Asia:a systematic review and meta-analysis with implications for public health and sustainable control strategies显示文摘Background Strongyloidiasis, caused by the nematodes Strongyloides stercoralis and Strongyloides fuelleborni,is estimated to afect over 600 million individuals worldwide. The disease is endemic in Southeast Asia, where a warmhumid climate and socio-economic conditions maintain the parasite’s life cycle and transmission. However, the current diagnostic methods may not be sufciently sensitive, suggesting that the true prevalence of strongyloidiasis could be seriously underestimated in this. This study aims to determine the prevalence of strongyloidiasis in Southeast Asia through a systematic review and meta-analysis and to discuss the implications of the estimated prevalence on diagnostic approaches and control strategies. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines,we conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar databases to identify studies reporting Strongyloides prevalence data in the 11 Southeast Asian countries up to December 2022.A random efects model was employed to estimate the pooled prevalence of S.stercoralis at both regional and country levels. Results Out of 3722 articles identifed,224 met our inclusion criteria. For S.stercoralis specifcally,we found 187 articles,of which 52.4%were from Thailand. All Southeast Asian countries, except Brunei, had at least one study on Strongyloides prevalence. The estimated pooled prevalence of S.stercoralis regionally was 12.7%(95%CI 10.70-14.80%),ranging from 0.4 to 24.9%at the country level.Cambodia had the highest pooled prevalence(24.9%,95%CI 15.65-35.38%),followed by Lao PDR(16.5%,95%CI 9.50-24.95%).Moreover,we obtained a pooled prevalence of 10%(95%CI 7.06-13.52%)in a group comprising immigrants, workers, and veterans from Southeast Asian countries.S.stercoralis infects various host types, including nonhuman primates, domestic dogs and cats, rodents, and transport carriers such as cockroaches and vegetables. Conclusions A high prevalence of strongyloidiasis in Southeast Asia was revealed, highlighting the importance of the region’s ongoing research, surveillance, and control eforts.Factors contributing to the strongyloidiasis transmission include the role of animal hosts, the impact of global connectivity, and the signifcance of the co-endemicity of other Strongyloides species.Based on these fndings,a multi-pronged One-Health approach is essential for sustainable intervention and control. | Abigail Hui En Chan Teera Kusolsuk Dorn Watthanakulpanich Wallop Pakdee Pham Ngoc Doanh Azlin Mohd Yasin Paron Dekumyoy Urusa Thaenkham | 2023 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,5: | 0 |
| 9 | Foregut bypass vs.restrictive bariatric procedures for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease:a meta-analysis of 3,355 individuals显示文摘Background:Bariatric surgery represents an important treatment option for severely obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).However, there remains inadequate data regarding the effects of different bariatric procedures on various NAFLD parameters, especially for histological outcomes. Thus, this meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of restrictive bariatric procedures and foregut bypass on the metabolic, biochemical, and histological parameters for patients with NAFLD.Methods:Medline and Embase were searched for articles relating to bariatric procedures and NAFLD.Pairwise meta-analysis was conducted to compare efficacy of bariatric procedures pre-vs.post-procedure with subgroup analysis to further compare restrictive against foregut bypass procedures.Results:Thirty-one articles involving 3,355 patients who underwent restrictive bariatric procedures(n=1,460)and foregut bypass(n=1,895)were included. Both foregut bypass(P<0.01)and restrictive procedures(P=0.03)significantly increased odds of fibrosis resolution.Compared to restrictive procedures, foregut bypass resulted in a borderline non-significant decrease in fibrosis score(P=0.06)and significantly lower steatosis score(P<0.001).For metabolic parameters, foregut bypass significantly lowered body mass index(P=0.003)and low-density lipoprotein(P=0.008)compared to restrictive procedures. No significant differences were observed between both procedures for aspartate aminotransferase(P=0.17)and alkaline phosphatase(P=0.61).However,foregut bypass resulted in significantly lower gamma-glutamyl transferase than restrictive procedures(P=0.01)while restrictive procedures resulted in significantly lower alanine transaminase than foregut bypass(P=0.02).Conclusions:The significant histological and metabolic advantages and comparable improvements in biochemical outcomes support the choice of foregut bypass over restrictive bariatric procedures in NAFLD management. | Wen Hui Lim Snow Yunni Lin Cheng Han Ng Darren Jun Hao Tan Jieling Xiao Jie Ning Yong Phoebe Wen Lin Tay Nicholas Syn Yip Han Chin Kai En Chan Chin Meng Khoo Nicholas Chew Roger S.Y.Foo Asim Shabbir Eunice X.Tan Daniel Q.Huang Mazen Noureddin Arun J.Sanyal Mohammad Shadab Siddiqui Mark D.Muthiah | 2023 | Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition2023,12,5: | 0 |
| 10 | The growing threat of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-related hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the fastest growing cause of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)worldwide(1).It is anticipated that the burden of NAFLD-related HCC will continue to increase in tandem with the global obesity epidemic(2,3).This has become a global issue of concern,as liver cancer is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and is currently the third leading cause of cancer death(4). | Margaret L.P.Teng Kai En Chan Darren J.H.Tan Daniel Q.Huang | 2022 | Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition2022,11,5: | 0 |
