| 2 | Exotic origin of the Chinese continental shelf: new insights into the tectonic evolution of the western Pacific and eastern China since the Mesozoic显示文摘The effect of paleo-Pacific subduction on the geological evolution of the western Pacific and continental China is likely complex. Nevertheless, our analysis of the distribution of Mesozoic granitoids in the eastern continental China in space and time has led us to an interesting conclusion: The basement of the continental shelf beneath East and South China Seas may actually be of exotic origin geologically unrelated to the continental lithosphere of eastern China. By accepting the notion that the Jurassic–Cretaceous granitoids in the region are genetically associated with western Pacific subduction and the concept that subduction may cease to continue only if the trench is being jammed, then the termination of the granitoidmagmatism throughout the vast region at *88 ± 2 Ma manifests the likelihood of ‘‘sudden'', or shortly beforehand(*100 Ma), trench jam of the Mesozoic western Pacific subduction. Trench jam happens if the incoming‘‘plate'' or portion of the plate contains a sizeable mass that is too buoyant to subduct. The best candidate for such a buoyant and unsubductable mass is either an oceanic plateau or a micro-continent. We hypothesize that the basement of the Chinese continental shelf represents such an exotic, buoyant and unsubductable mass, rather than seaward extension of the continental lithosphere of eastern China. The locus of the jammed trench(i.e., the suture) is predictably located on the shelf in the vicinity of, and parallel to, the arc-curved coastal line of the southeast continental China. It is not straightforward to locate the locus in the northern section of the East China Sea shelf because of the more recent(\20 Ma) tectonic re-organization associated with the opening of the Sea of Japan. We predict that the trench jam at *100 Ma led to the re-orientation of the Pacific plate motion in the course of NNW direction as inferred from the age-progressive Emperor Seamount Chain of Hawaiian hotspot origin(its oldest unsubdued Meiji and Detroit seamounts are *82 Ma),making the boundary between the Pacific plate and the newly accreted plate of eastern Asia a transform fault at the location east of the continental shelf of exotic origin. This explains the apparent *40 Myr magmatic gap from *88to *50 Ma prior to present-day western Pacific subduction initiation. We propose that basement penetration drilling on well-chosen sites is needed to test the hypothesis in order to reveal the true nature of the Chinese continental shelf basement. This testing becomes critical and cannot longer be neglected in order to genuinely understand the tectonic evolution of the western Pacific and its effect on the geology of eastern China since the Mesozoic, includingthe cratonic lithosphere thinning, related magmatism/mineralization, and the mechanism of the subsequent South China Sea opening, while also offering novel perspectives on aspects of the plate tectonics theory. We also suggest the importance of future plate tectonic reconstruction of the western Pacific to consider the nature and histories of the Chinese continental shelf of exotic origin as well as the probable transform plate boundary from *100 to*50 Ma. | 3 | Comparative Genome Analysis of Scutellaria baicalensis and Scutellaria barbata Reveals the Evolution of Active Flavonoid Biosynthesis显示文摘Scutellaria baicalensis(S.baicalensis)and Scutellaria barbata(S.barbata)are common medicinal plants of the Lamiaceae family.Both produce specific flavonoid compounds,including baicalein,scutellarein,norwogonin,and wogonin,as well as their glycosides,which exhibit antioxidant and antitumor activities.Here,we report chromosome-level genome assemblies of S.baicalensis and S.barbata with quantitative chromosomal variation(2 n=18 and 2 n=26,respectively).The divergence of S.baicalensis and S.barbata occurred far earlier than previously reported,and a whole-genome duplication(WGD)event was identified.The insertion of long terminal repeat elements after speciation might be responsible for the observed chromosomal expansion and rearrangement.Comparative genome analysis of the congeneric species revealed the species-specific evolution of chrysin and apigenin biosynthetic genes,such as the S.baicalensis-specific tandem duplication of genes encoding phenylalanine ammonia lyase and chalcone synthase,and the S.barbata-specific duplication of genes encoding 4-Co A ligase.In addition,the paralogous duplication,colinearity,and expression diversity of CYP82 D subfamily members revealed the functional divergence of genes encoding flavone hydroxylase between S.baicalensis and S.barbata.Analyzing these Scutellaria genomes reveals the common and species-specific evolution of flavone biosynthetic genes.Thus,these findings would facilitate the development of molecular breeding and studies of biosynthesis and regulation of bioactive compounds. | Zhichao Xu Ranran Gao Xiangdong Pu Rong Xu Jiyong Wang Sihao Zheng Yan Zeng Jun Chen Chunnian He Jingyuan Song | 2020 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2020,18,3: | 10 |

| 6 | Gene flow from transgenic roundup-ready soybean to wild soybean显示文摘A study was conducted in the field of the Institute of Vegetable Crops, Jiangsu province from July 2000 to August 2003. The transgenic roundup-ready soybean was sown in the middle of the field in a circular manner for 5 circles, with the distance of 3 m, from one circle to another. Then the wild soybean was planted in plots as the rays of the circles in 8 directions (N, E, W, S, NE, NW, SE and SW), spaced every 5 m until 50 m. Each plot comprised 25 plants. In the second year, the wild soybean seeds from the first year were planted in the field together with the original wild soybean as check. Before flowering time, high concentrations of roundups (about 4-5 times of the normal dose) were sprayed on the plants and the surviving plants were identified. The leaves were taken to the lab for DNA extraction to determine the unique DNA for roundup-ready soybean (CTAB method). About 2% of the plants survived, but some leaves were yellow. One plant of wild soybean was found to have the roundup-ready gene from the original roundup-ready soybean. The other surviving wild soybeans should also had some fragments of the roundup tolerance gene. | 16 | Expression for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma in pituitary adenomas 38 cases for semi-quantitative immunohistochemical analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND: It has been reported that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ(PPARγ) is highly expressed in lung cancer, colon cancer, and gastric cancer, as well as other tumors. OBJECTIVE: To study expression of PPARγin pituitary adenomas and analyze the role of PPARγin hormonal typing of pituitary adenomas. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry of pathological specimens. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Neurosurgery, Wuxi Second Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University between January 2002 and May 2005. MATERIALS: Surgical resection samples of pituitary adenomas from 38 cases (18 male and 20 female) were analyzed. Eight cases were determined to be invasive pituitary adenomas and 30 cases were non-invasive pituitary adenomas. Hormonal classification of the types of pituitary adenomas revealed somatotrophic adenomas in six cases, corticotrophic adenoma in five cases, prolactinomas in 13 cases, multi-hormone secreting adenomas in six cases, and eight cases of adenoma without altered endocrine function. Five autopsy specimens were collected during the same period from patients of matching age that died from unrelated diseases and were included as normal anterior pituitary controls. METHODS: Cell counts for positive immunohistochemical signals were recorded from histopathological sections. The percentage of positive cells was reported as a semi-quantitative analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The rate of PPARγpositive cells in different types of adenoma was based on hormonal levels and invasiveness of pituitary tumor cells. RESULTS: All tumor biopsies were determined to express PPARγ The rate of PPARγ-positive cells ranged between 8%-65% in the pituitary adenomas. According to hormonal type, PPARγexpression did not vary between the groups. In addition, there was no significant difference in PPARγexpression between the non-invasive and invasive pituitary adenomas.
