1Lotus seed skin proanthocyanidin extract exhibits potent antioxidant property via activation of the Nrf2-ARE pathway显示文摘Lotus seed is well known as traditional food and medicine,but its skin is usually discarded.Recent studies have shown that lotus seed skin contains a high concentration of proanthocyanidins that have multi-functions,such as antioxidation,anti-inflammation,and anti-cancer effects.In the present study,we aimed to isolate and purify the proanthocyanidins from lotus seed skin by acetone extraction and rotary evaporation,identify their chemical structures by HPLC-MS-MS and NMR,and further investigate the antioxidant properties of the extract purified by macroporous resin (PMR) from lotus seed skin both in vitro and in vivo.The results showed that PMR mainly contained oligomeric proanthocyanidins,especially dimeric procyanidin B1 (PB1),procyanidin B2 and procyanidin B4.Although it had limited ability to directly scavenge radicals in vitro,PMR could significantly enhance the expressions of antioxidant proteins via activation of nuclear factory-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway in HepG2 cells.Molecular data revealed that PB1,a major component in PMR,stabilized Nrf2 by inhibiting the ubiquitination of Nrf2,which led to subsequent activation of the Nrf2-ARE pathway,including the enhancements of Nrf2 nuclear translocation,Nrf2-ARE binding and ARE transcriptional activity.Moreover,the in vivo results in high fat diet-induced mice further verified the powerful antioxidant property of PMR.These results revealed that lotus seed skin is a promising resource for functional food development.Tao Li Qili Li Weiguo Wu Yong Li De-xing Hou Hua Xu Baodong Zheng Shaoxiao Zeng Yang Shan Xiangyang Lu Fangming Deng Si Qin 2019Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2019,51,1:8
2Long-term effects of mowing on plasticity and allometry of Leymus chinensis in a temperate semi-arid grassland,China显示文摘Mowing is an important land management practice for natural semi-arid regions.A growing body of empirical evidence shows that different mowing regimes affect the functioning of grassland ecosystems.However,the responses of plant functional traits to long-term mowing and their allometric scaling under long-term mowing are poorly understood.For a better understanding of the effects of mowing on grassland ecosystems,we analyzed the allometric traits of leaves and stems of Leymus chinensis(Trin.) Tzvel.,a dominant grass species in eastern Eurasian temperate grassland,at different mowing intensities(no clipping,clipping once every two years,once a year and twice a year).Experiments were conducted on plots established over a decade ago in a typical steppe of Xilinhot,Inner Mongolia,China.Results showed that most of the functional traits of L.chinensis decreased with the increased mowing intensity.The responses of leaves and stems to long-term mowing were asymmetric,in which leaf traits were more stable than stem traits.Also significant allometric relationships were found among most of the plant functional traits under the four mowing treatments.Sensitive traits of L.chinensis(e.g.leaf length and stem length) were primary indicators associated with aboveground biomass decline under high mowing intensity.In conclusion,the allometric growth of different functional traits of L.chinensis varies with different long-term mowing practices,which is likely to be a strategy used by the plant to adapt to the mowing disturbances.LI Xiliang HOU Xiangyang REN Weibo Taogetao BAOYIN LIU Zhiying Warwick BADGERY LI Yaqiong WU Xinhong XU Huimin 2016Journal of Arid Land2016,8,6:7
3Sustainable management of Chinese grasslands—issues and knowledge显示文摘China has almost 400 Mhm^2 of grasslands,90% of which is considered degraded to varying degrees,on which 16 million herders depend for their livelihoods and many more indirectly, along the value-adding chain.Since 1950, average stocking rates across China have increased 4-fold. National policies have focused over recent decades on finding ways to rehabilitate the degraded grasslands, to sustain livestock production from them, and to improve the livelihoods of herder households, who are among the poorest people in China. A large collaborative program commenced in the early 2000 s to help find solutions to the sustainable management of grasslands.This paper summarizes key findings of many research projects, identifies where knowledge is weak and argues that the successful rehabilitation of grasslands will also require policies that provide incentives and support for herders as they move from a focus on survival to a focus on production of higher quality products, for which consumers are increasingly willing to pay. A key focus is to emphasize the improvement of animal production per head. When this is done, it naturally leads to lower stocking rates, which in turn provides the opportunities for grasslands to recover. Across a range of experiments, farm demonstrations and analyses using models, in Inner Mongolia and Gansu, a consistent result has been that a 50% reduction in stocking rates, improves net household income and starts the process of grassland rehabilitation.Rather than focusing on stocking rates, better management of grasslands could be achieved by maintaining the grasslands above critical values for herbage mass, values that help optimize botanical composition, reduce soil erosion, optimize animal growth rates and aid ecosystem functions. Managing to critical values for herbage mass is likely to be more effective than efforts to calculate sustainable stocking rates. An early summer rest is valuable for aiding grassland rehabilitation and summer productivity, but a total grazing ban(typically for 5 years)may not achieve its aims as evidence shows it may take 10–15 years to achieve a better grassland state. Lessdesirable plant species often increase in degraded grasslands that are rested and grazing can help manage those species. Surveys of herders indicate they have very mixed views on the benefits of total grazing bans that are unlikely to rehabilitate grasslands to an ideal botanical composition.The current objective is to work with grasslands that herders now have and optimize the existing composition.Grazing grasslands in winter results primarily in weight loss by animals and there is now evidence of how winter grazing reduces grassland growth in the next summer. It is better to keep animals in well-built sheds and feed them better, improved feeding through the cold months is required. 4Phylogenetic positions of some genera and species of the family Buccinidae (Gastropoda: Mollusca) from China based on ribosomal RNA and COI sequences显示文摘A phylogenetic analysis of members of the family Buccinidae was conducted using 18S rRNA gene, 28S rRNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase Ⅰ gene. We studied 18 species of Buccinidae that belong to eight different genera and inhabit the China coastal seas. We analyzed the patterns of divergence between an outgroup and basal ingroup taxa, the monophyly of the genus Neptunea, and the position of one unnamed species within the Buccinidae. A phylogenetic tree (neighbor-joining (NJ) method) was reconstructed based on the sequences of 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA and COI, with Rapana venosa as outgroup. The NJ tree indicated that the 18 species could be divided into five groups. The genus Buccinum was monophyletic, whereas Neptunea was shown to be paraphyletic since it included Siphonalia subdilatata and Neptunea sp., a new species. This novel species otherwise clustered consistently with Neptunea cumingi in three other phylogenetic trees, showing a low genetic distance and divergence percentage of sequences belonging to the genus Neptunea. 8Fe-based amorphous coating prepared using high-velocity oxygen fuel and its corrosion behavior in static lead-bismuth eutectic alloy显示文摘The Fe_(949.7)Cr_(18)Mn_(1.9)Mo_(7.4)W_(1.6)B_(15.2)C_(3.8)Si_(2) amorphous coating was deposited on T91 steel substrate by using the high-velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF)spray technique to enhance the corrosion resistance of T91 stainless steel in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic(LBE).The corrosion behavior of the T91 steel and coating exposed to oxygen-saturated LBE at 400℃ for 500 h was investigated.Results showed that the T91 substrate was severely corroded and covered by a homogeneously distributed dual-layer oxide on the interface contacted to LBE,consisting of an outer magnetite layer and an inner Fe-Cr spinel layer.Meanwhile,the amorphous coating with a high glass transition temperature(Tg=550℃)and crystallization temperature(T_(x)=600℃)exhibited dramatically enhanced thermal stability and corrosion resistance.No visible LBE penetration was observed,although small amounts of Fe_(3)O_(4),Cr_(2)O_(3),and PbO were found on the coating surface.In addition,the amorphicity and interface bonding of the coating layer remained unchanged after the LBE corrosion.The Fe-based amorphous coating can act as a stable barrier layer in liquid LBE and have great application potential for long-term service in LBE-cooled fast reactors.Xiangyang Peng Yuhai Tang Xiangbin Ding Zhichao Lu Shuo Hou Jianming Zhou Shuyin Han Zhaoping Lü Guangyao Lu Yuan Wu 2022International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2022,29,11:1

13Sensitivity of livelihood strategy to livestock production and marketization:An empirical analysis of grasslands in Inner Mongolia,China显示文摘Recent researches have primarily focused on the relationship between livelihood strategies and livelihood capital,with few empirical studies on the sensitivity of livelihood strategies to livestock production and marketization in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China.This study used an income distribution approach to categorize livelihood strategies of the respondents(n=394)into three types,i.e.,herder livelihood strategy(LS1),petty-herder livelihood strategy(LS2),and non-herder livelihood strategy(LS3).Using the multinomial logistic regression model,we compared livestock production and marketization across the three livelihood strategies.Our findings showed that(1)livestock production and marketization tended to favor LS1;(2)an increase in the land asset(contracted and rented grassland)and off-take rate increased the probability of households choosing LS1;(3)stocking rate was higher for LS1;and(4)the higher critical market-related risks perceived by herders were animal price and hay and corn price.Moreover,higher livestock price acted as a deterrent to diversifying into other livelihood strategies(LS2 and LS3).Finally,this study advocates for policies that will promote the land transfer market,adopt modern techniques in animal husbandry,improve the medium for disseminating market information to herders,and provide incentives for long-term livelihood transformation.Saheed Olaide JIMOH DING Wenqiang DONG Haibin BAI Haihua YIN Yanting LIU Huihui HOU Xiangyang 2021Regional Sustainability2021,2,4:0
14The shift in the abundance of two Stipa species in response to land use change is associated with their divergent reproductive strategies显示文摘Aims The divergent changes of plant species under land use changes are key mechanisms underlying vegetation succession.Stipa grandis steppe and Stipa krylovii steppe are two plant commu-nities widely distributed on the Mongolian Plateau.They have been speculated to be able to succeed into each other under different land use types and intensities based on the observa-tions on their presence and abundance at the sites with dif-ferent land use history.However,no direct evidence,neither the underlying mechanisms,have been reported for this specu-lation.Here,we verified this speculation and explored the underlying mechanisms in the typical steppe region of Inner Mongolia.Methods We investigated the abundance and reproductive behavior of S.kry-lovii and S.grandis under different land use types and intensities.We used 18 grassland paddocks to run a 6-year experiment with 6 management treatments(T0-unused,T1-grazing monthly in plant growing season,T2,T4,T6-grazing in different months in plant growing season,and T8-mowing)replicated three times.We measured the relative density and cover of S.krylovii and S.grandis using line sampling method and examined their number and bio-mass of vegetative and reproductive tillers using quadrat method in each paddock after treatments for 4 and 6 years.We also de-termined these plant attributes in 14 pairs of heavily versus lightly used grassland plots in a wide area(150 km×200 km)of the typical steppe region.Important Findings 1.Grazing largely and mowing moderately decreased the density ratio and coverage ratio of S.grandis to S.krylovii in grasslands(P<0.05),and the differences in these ratios between grazed and unused grasslands increased with time.2.Grazing,but not mowing,significantly enhanced the relative density(N_(rep)=reproductive tiller number/total tiller number)of,and biomass allocation(B_(rep)=reproductive tiller biomass/total bio-mass)to,reproductive tillers of S.krylovii(P<0.05),but not S.gran-dis.This grazing enhancement to sexual reproduction of S.krylovii,and additionally inhibition to N_(rep) of S.grandis(P<0.05),were found across the 14 pairs of heavily versus lightly used plots.3.Seasonal pattern of grazing affected sexual reproduction of S.kry-lovii.The N_(rep) and B_(rep) was higher under grazing in July and September(T4)than in July and August(T6)or in May and July(T2)(P<0.05),suggesting a relatively positive effect of grazing on sexual reproduction in July(tasseling phenophase)than in May or August.Our results provide direct evidence to the reciprocal change of S.grandis and S.krylovii in steppe communities under different management and indicate that gazing or mowing enhancement of sexual reproduction of S.krylovii relative to S.grandis is one of the mechanisms for the change.Xiaoshuai Wang Frank Yonghong Li Yuanheng Li Xin Song Xudong Guo Xiangyang Hou Taogetao Baoyin 2019Journal of Plant Ecology2019,12,4:0
15The“two-pronged”nanosystem to precisely improve lipid metabolism and inflammatory microenvironment for atherosclerotic plaque stabilization显示文摘The rupture of atherosclerosis(AS)vulnerable plaque is the major cause of fatal arterial thrombosis related diseases.The lipid dysbolism and pro-inflammatory microenvironment are considered two main driving factors for plaque rupture.Herein,a“two-pronged”nanosystem LCS-Se/Res was designed to efficiently stabilize AS plaques,by precisely regulating lipid metabolism and inflammatory microenvironment.LCS-Se/Res was constructed with the core of resveratrol(Res)loaded selenium(Se)nanoparticles(NPs),and the shell(LCS)of targeting peptide(LSIPPKA)modified chitosan(CS).This system was stable in blood circulation.When it arrived at the plaque site,LCS-Se/Res could actively recognize the highly expressed lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor 1(LOX-1)receptor and accumulate there.Thereafter,Res was released from LCS-Se nanocarriers in situ by responding to acidic plaque microenvironment.On the one hand,Res increased autophagy flux in damaged endothelial cells by activating cAMP-PKA-AMPK-SIRT1 signaling pathway to promote lipid degradation.Interestingly,LCS-Se also promoted cholesterol efflux to improve lipid metabolism.On the other hand,fixed-point separated Res and LCS-Se synergistically improved plaque inflammatory microenvironment by reversing macrophage phenotype(M1 to M2)and alleviating plaque oxidative stress.Pharmacodynamics result proved that the plaque vulnerability index(VI)decreased from 1.39±0.282 to 0.108±0.02 after LCS-Se/Res treatment.In short,this study provided a new therapeutic strategy for the atherosclerosis through the two-pronged approach.Huijuan Zhang Linyu Gao Mingli Sui Jingjing Wang Yaping Wang Xiangyang Xuan Zhenzhong Zhang Ling Zhu Lin Hou 2023Nano Research2023,16,2:0
16The SNAPc complex mediates starvation-induced trans-splicing in Caenorhabditis elegans显示文摘Dietary restriction usually suppresses biosynthesis but activates catabolic pathways in animals.However,the short-term starvation enhances biosynthetic activities and promotes ribosomal biogenesis in adult Caenorhabditis elegans.The mechanism underlying the processes remains largely unknown.Here,we find that the short-term starvation enhances the SL1 trans-splicing of translation-related genes in adult C.elegans by transcriptome analysis.The small nuclear RNA-activating protein complex(SNAPc)promotes SL RNA production and mediates starvation-induced trans-splicing.TOFU-5,a core factor in the upstream sequence transcription complex(USTC)essential for piRNA production,is also involved in the starvationinduced trans-splicing processes.Knocking down components of the SNAPc complex and tofu-5 extends worm survival under starvation conditions.Taken together,our study highlights the importance of SL transsplicing in the nutrition response and reveals a mechanism of the survival regulation by food deprivation via SNAPc and TOFU-5.Xinhao Hou Chengming Zhu Mingjing Xu Xiangyang Chen Cheng Sun Björn Nashan Shouhong Guang Xuezhu Feng 2022Journal of Genetics and Genomics2022,49,10:0
17Market opportunities do not explain the ability of herders to meet livelihood objectives over winter on the Mongolian Plateau显示文摘Drylands under pastoral land use are considered one of the most vulnerable social-ecological systems to global climate change,but the herders'abilities to adapt to the different extreme weather events have received little attention in the drylands.Herders on the Mongolian Plateau(MP;including Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China and Mongolia),have had a long history of adapting climatic variability and extreme weather events.However,it is unclear how changes such as increased levels of infrastructure and market integration affect the ability of herders to achieve the key livelihood objectives:the minimisation of the death and abortion rates of livestock in the winter.Here,we used remotely sensed and household survey data to map,model and explore the climate exposure and sensitivity of herders in the settled area(Inner Mongolia of China)and nomadic area(Mongolia)in the winter of 2012–2013.We aimed to quantify the multi-scaled characteristics of both climate exposure and sensitivity through the lens of key adaptive strategies utilized by herders.Our results showed that the higher levels of infrastructure and market integration,and the lower levels of remoteness on the MP did not increase the herders'ability to achieve the key livelihood objectives.Our results also suggested that exposure to the snow that is comparatively greater than the long-term average(cumulative exposure)may be more important in determining the social-ecological vulnerability than absolute exposure.We suggested that neither the risk management strategies available to these herders,nor the demographic variables,could compensate for the mode of production governing the pastoral systems.Our study could provide further evidence for the complex and scaled nature of climate exposure and sensitivity,and the results imply that any analysis of the relationship among exposure,sensitivity and vulnerability of pastoral households to climate change in the drylands will require a multi-scaled and interdisciplinary approach.BAI Haihua YIN Yanting Jane ADDISON HOU Yulu WANG Linhe HOU Xiangyang 2020Journal of Arid Land2020,12,3:0
