2Biological soil crust distribution in Artemisia ordosica communities along a grazing pressure gradient in Mu Us Sandy Land, Northern China显示文摘This study investigated the distribution pattern of biological soil crust (BSC) in Artemisia ordosica communities in Mu Us Sandy Land. Three experimental sites were selected according to grazing pressure gradient. In each experimental site, the total vegetation cover, A. ordosica cover, BSC cover, litter-fall cover, BSC degree of fragmentation, BSC thickness and soil properties were investigated in both fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes and simultaneously analyzed in the laboratory. The results showed that at the same grazing pressure, BSC cover and composition were significantly affected by the fixation degree of sand dunes. In addition, BSC cover in the fixed sand dunes was 83.74% on average, whereas it is proportionally dominated by 28% mosses, 21% lichens, and 51% algae. Meanwhile, BSC cover in the semi-fixed sand dunes was 23.54% on average, which is proportionally dominated by 6.3% mosses, 2.5% lichens, and 91.2% algae. Fine sand, organic matter, and total nitrogen (N) contents in the fixed sand dunes were all significantly higher than those in the semi-fixed sand dunes. Litter-fall cover decreased along the grazing pressure gradient, whereas BSC fragmentation degree increased. Fine sand content decreased along with the increase of grazing pressure, whereas medium sand content increased in both fixed and semi-fixed dunes. The organic matter and total N contents in the no grazing site were significantly higher than those in light and normal grazing sites. However, there were no significant differences between the light and normal grazing sites. In addition, there were also no significant differences in BSC thickness between the light and normal grazing sites in the fixed sand dunes. However, a significant decrease was observed in both BSC cover and thickness in the normal grazing site. 3Temperature acclimation affects thermal preference and tolerance in three Eremias lizards(Lacertidae)显示文摘We acclimated adult males of three Eremias lizards from different latitudes to 28℃,33℃ or 38℃ to examine whether temperature acclimation affects their thermal preference and tolerance and whether thermal preference and tolerance of these lizards correspond with their latitudinal distributions.Overall,selected body temperature(Tsel)and viable temperature range(VTR)were both highest in E.brenchleyi and lowest in E.multiocellata,with E.argus in between;critical thermal minimum(CTMin)was highest in E.multiocellata and lowest in E.brenchleyi,with E.argus in between;critical thermal maximum(CTMax)was lower in E.multiocellata than in other two species.Lizards acclimated to 28℃ and 38℃ overall selected lower body temperatures than those acclimated to 33℃;lizards acclimated to high temperatures were less tolerant of low temperatures,and vice versa;lizards acclimated to 28℃ were less tolerant of high temperatures but had a wider VTR range than those acclimated to 33℃ and 38℃.Lizards of three species acclimated to the three temperatures always differed from each other in CTMin,but not in Tsel,CTMax and VTR.Our results show that:temperature acclimation plays an important role in influencing thermal preference and tolerance in the three Eremias lizards,although the degrees to which acclimation temperature affects thermal preference and tolerance differ among species;thermal preference rather than tolerance of the three Eremias lizards corresponds with their latitudinal distributions.Hong LI Zheng WANG Wenbin MEI Xiang JI 2009Current Zoology2009,55,4:9

5Phylogenomics,biogeography,and evolution of the blue-or white-fruited dogwoods(Cornus)-Insights into morphological and ecological niche divergence following intercontinental geographic isolation显示文摘The eastern Asian(EA)-eastem North American(ENA)floristic disjunction represents a major pattern of phytogeography of the Northern Hemisphere.Despite 20 years of studies dedicated to identification of taxa that display this disjunct pattern,its origin and evolution remain an open question,especially regarding postisolation evolution.The blue-or white-fruited dogwoods(BW)are the most species-rich among the four major clades of Cornus L.,consisting of-35 species divided into three subgenera(subg.Yinquania,subg.Mesomora,and subg.Kraniopsis).The BW group provides an excellent example of the EA-ENA floristic disjunction for biogeographic study due to its diversity distribution centered in eastern Asia and eastern North America,yet its species relationships and delineation have remained poorly understood.In this study,we combined genome-wide markers from RAD-seq,morphology,fossils,and climate data to understand species relationships,biogeographic history,and ecological niche and morphological evolution.Our phylogenomic analyses with RAxML and MrBayes recovered a strongly supported and well-resolved phylogeny of the BW group with three intercontinental disjunct clades in EA and ENA or Eurasia and North America,of which two are newly identified within subg.Kraniopsis.These analyses also recovered a potential new species but failed to resolve relationships within the C.hemsleyi-C.schindleri complex.In an effort to develop an approach to reduce computation time,analysis of different nodal age settings in treePL suggests setting a node's minimum age constraint to the lower bound of a fossil's age range to obtain similar ages to that of BEAST.Divergence time analyses with BEAST and treePL dated the BW stem back to the very Late Cretaceous and the divergence of the three subgenera in the Paleogene.By integrating fossil ages and morphology,a total evidence-based dating approach was used in conjunction with time-slice probabilities of dispersal under a DEC model to resolve ancestral ranges of each disjunct in the Miocene:Eurasia and ENA(disjunct 1),EA and western North America(disjunct 2),and EA(disjunct 3).The dated biogeographic history supports dispersal via the North Atlantic Land Bridge in the late Paleogene in disjunct 1 and dispersal via the Bering Land Bridge in the Miocene for disjuncts 2 and 3.Character mapping with a stochastic model in phytools and comparison of ecological niche,morphospace,and rate of evolution indicated differential divergence patterns in morphology,ecological niche,and molecules between disjunct sisters.Although morphological stasis was observed in most of the characters,evolutionary changes in growth habit and some features of leaf,flower,and fruit morphology occurred in one or both sister clades.A significant differentiation of ecological habitats in temperature,precipitation,and elevation between disjunct sisters was observed,suggesting a role of niche divergence in morphological evolution post-isolation.The patterns of evolutionary rate between morphology and molecules varied among disjunct clades and were not always congruent between morphology and molecules,suggesting cases of non-neutral morphological evolution driven by ecological selection.Our phylogenetic evidence and comparisons of evolutionary rate among disjunct lineages lend new insights into the formation of the diversity anomaly between EA and ENA,with particular support of an early diversification in EA.These findings,in conjunction with previous studies,again suggest that the EA-ENA disjunct floras are an assembly of lineages descended from the Mesophytic Forests that evolved from the early Paleogene“boreotropical flora”through varied evolutionary pathways across lineages.Kira Lindelof Julieta ALindo Wenbin Zhou Xiang Ji Qiu-Yun(Jenny)Xiang 2020Journal of Systematics and Evolution2020,58,5:3

7Analysis of risk factors associated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for patients with liver cirrhosis: a multicenter, retrospective, clinical study显示文摘Background:Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)is the endoscopic modality of choice for the treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases.However,patients with cirrhosis,particularly those with decompensated cirrhosis,are believed to be at increased risk for complications associated with ERCP.There is a paucity of literature describing the outcomes of ERCP for patients with cirrhosis.This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of ERCP for cirrhosis patients,especially adverse events,and evaluated its safety and efficacy.Methods:We performed a multicenter,retrospective study of all patients at Beijing Friendship Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University,Xijing Hospital affiliated to Air Force Military Medical University,Beijing Youan Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University,and the Fifth Medical Center of the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital from June 2003 to August 2019.The adverse events of inpatient ERCP for patients with(n=182)and without liver cirrhosis(controls;n=385)were compared.Results:A total of 567 patients underwent ERCP between January 2003 and December 2019 were enrolled in this study.Compared to patients without cirrhosis,patients with cirrhosis were at higher risk for postoperative complications(odds ratio[OR],4.172;95%confidence interval[CI],1.232–7.031;P<0.001)such as postoperative pancreatitis(OR,2.026;95%CI,1.002–4.378;P=0.001)and cholangitis(OR,3.903;95%CI,1.001–10.038;P=0.036).The main indications for ERCP for patients with cirrhosis in this study included choledocholithiasis(101 cases;55.5%),benign bile duct strictures(46 cases;25.3%),and malignant bile duct strictures(28 cases;15.4%).Among them,23 patients(12.6%)underwent balloon dilation and 79 patients(43.4%)underwent sphincterotomy.Of the patients with cirrhosis,delayed bleeding occurred in ten patients(5.5%),postoperative pancreatitis occurred in 80 patients(44.0%),and postoperative cholangitis occurred in 25 patients(13.7%).An additional multivariate analysis showed that the total bilirubin(TBIL)level(OR,4.58;95%CI,2.37–6.70)and Child-Pugh score of C(OR,3.11;95%CI,1.04–5.37)were risk factors for postoperative complications in patients with cirrhosis.Conclusions:Compared with the general population of patients undergoing ERCP,patients with cirrhosis were more prone to postoperative pancreatitis and cholangitis.TBIL levels and Child-Pugh scores were risk factors for postoperative complications in patients with cirrhosis.Jielin Li Jiexuan Hu Peng Li Yongdong Wu Yongjun Wang Ming Ji Haiyang Hua Wenbin Ran Yanglin Pan Shutian Zhang 2022Chinese Medical Journal2022,135,19:2

14Oxidation resistance of powder metallurgy Ti-45Al-10Nb alloy at high temperature显示文摘TiAl alloy with high Nb content,nominally Ti-45Al-10Nb,was prepared by powder metallurgy,and the oxidation resistance at 850,900,and 950℃was investigated.The high-temperature oxidation-resistance mechanism and oxidation dynamics were discussed following the oxide skin morphology and microstructural evolution analysis.The oxide skin structures were similar for 850 and 900℃,with TiO_(2)+Al_(2)O_(3)mixture covering TiO_(2)with dispersed Nb_(2)O_(5).At 950℃,the oxide skin was divided into four sublayers,from the outside to the parent metal:loose TiO_(2)+Al_(2)O_(3),dense Al_(2)O_(3),dense TiO_(2)+Nb_(2)O_(5),and TiO_(2)matrix with dispersed Nb_(2)O_(5).The Nb layer suppressed the outward diffusion of Ti atoms,hindering the growth of TiO_(2),and simultaneously promote the formation of a continuous Al_(2)O_(3)protective layer,providing the alloy with long-term high-temperature oxidation resistance.Xuchen Jin Peihao Ye Hongrui Ji Zhuanxia Suo Boxin Wei Xuewen Li Wenbin Fang 2022International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2022,29,12:0
15Stable partial nitritation of mature landfill leachate in a continuous flow bioreactor:Long-term performance,microbial community evolution,and mechanisms显示文摘A continuous flow bioreactor was operated for 300 days to investigate partial nitritation(PN)of mature landfill leachate,establishing the long-term performance of the system in terms of the microbial community composition,evolution,and interactions.The stable operation phase(31-300 d)began after a 30 days of start-up period,reaching an average nitrite accumulation ratio(NAR)of 94.43%and a ratio of nitrite nitrogen to ammonia nitrogen(NO_(2)^(−)-N/NH_(4)^(+)-N)of 1.16.Some fulvic-like and humic-like compounds and proteins were effectively degraded in anaerobic and anoxic tanks,which was consistent with the corresponding abundance of methanogens and syntrophic bacteria in the anaerobic tank,and organic matter degrading bacteria in the anoxic tank.The ammonia-oxidizing bacteria(AOB)Nitrosomonas was found to be the key functional bacteria,exhibiting an increase in abundance from 0.27%to 6.38%,due to its collaborative interactions with organic matter degrading bacteria.In-situ inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria(NOB)was achieved using a combination of free ammonia(FA)and free nitrous acid(FNA),low dissolved oxygen(DO)with fewer bioavailable organics conditions were employed to maintain stable PN and a specific ratio of NO_(2)^(−)-N/NH_(4)^(+)-N,without an adverse impact on AOB.The synergistic relationships between AOB and both denitrifying bacteria and organic matter degrading bacteria,were found to contribute to the enhanced PN performance and microbial community structure stability.These findings provide a theoretical guidance for the effective application of PN-Anammox for mature landfill leachate treatment.Xiaoling Hu Jianyang Song Yantong Ji Chaojing Li Jia Wei Wanlin Lyu Bin Wang Wenbin Guo Rongfan Chen Hongyu Wang Dao Zhou Qian Zhang 2023Chinese Chemical Letters2023,34,11:0
16Designing Zinc Deposition Substrate with Fully Preferred Orientation to Elude the Interfacial Inhomogeneous Dendrite Growth显示文摘The development of zinc-ion batteries with high energy density remains a great challenge due to the uncontrollable dendrite growth on their zinc metal anodes.Film anodes plated on the substrate have attracted increasing attention to alleviate these dendrite issues.Herein,we first point out that both the random crystal orientation and the low metal affinity of the substrate are important factors of zinc dendrite formation.Accordingly,the(1 O 1)fully preferred tin interface layer with high zinc affinity was fabricated by chemical tin plating on(1 O o)oriented copper.This tin decorated copper substrate can realize high reversible zinc plating/stripping behavior,and full cell using this zinc plated substrate can be operated for more than 1000 cycles with high capacity retention(85.3%)and low electrochemical impedance.The proposed strategy can be also applied to lithium metal batteries,which demonstrates that the substrate orientation regulation and metal affinity design are the promising approaches to achieve dendrite-free metal anode and overcome the challenges of highly reactive metal anodes.Chunlin Xie Zefang Yang Qi Zhang Huimin Ji Yihu Li Tingqing Wu Wenbin Li Pengfei Wu Haiyan Wang 2023Research2023,,1:0
17Timing and mechanism of opening the Neo-Tethys Ocean:Constraints from mélanges in the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone显示文摘The evolution and final closure of the Neo-Tethys Ocean are one of the most important geological events that have occurred on Earth since the Mesozoic.However,the evolution of the Neo-Tethys is not well constrained,in particular whether its opening occurred in the Permian or the Triassic and whether a plume was involved with its opening or not.In this study,we present geochronological and geochemical data for mafic igneous rocks in mélanges along the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone(YZSZ)in southern Tibet to constrain the timing and mechanism of opening the Neo-Tethys Ocean.Based on field observations,the YZSZ mélanges can be divided into three segments.The western(west of Zhongba)and eastern(Sangsang-Renbu)segments are composed of ocean plate stratigraphy representing accretionary complexes that formed during subduction of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere beneath the southern margin of the Asian continent.Mélanges in the central segment(Zhongba-eastern Saga)typically have a siliciclastic matrix,and represent Tethyan Himalayan strata that were structurally mixed with the southern margin of the Asian continent.Based on our and previously published geochemical data,the mafic rocks in the YZSZ mélanges are ocean island basalt(OIB)-like,with ages in the Late Permian-Middle Triassic,the Middle-Late Jurassic,and the Early Cretaceous,respectively.An OIB-like block with an age of ca.253 Ma is identified from the Zhongba mélanges in the western segment,and it is the oldest OIB lithology yet identified in the YZSZ mélanges related to the evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean.Geochemical features indicate that this OIB-like block is distinct from typical OIBs and would be formed during continental rifting to incipient seafloor spreading.In the framework of plate divergent-convergent coupling systems and based on literature data for early Middle Triassic seamounts,radiolarian cherts,and normal mid-ocean ridge basalt-like oceanic crust,we conclude that opening of the Yarlung Zangbo Neo-Tethys Ocean would mainly occur at~250–243 Ma in the Early Triassic,not later than the early phase of Middle Triassic.In addition,a mantle plume was not involved in opening the Yarlung Zangbo Neo-Tethys Ocean.On the other hand,we have also identified a suite of ca.160 Ma OIB-like basaltic sills from the Bainang mélanges in the eastern segment,which is the same age as the OIB lithologies previously reported in the Zhongba mélanges.Based on the sill-like occurrence and absence of plume-related rock associations in this region,the Bainang OIB-like rocks might result from Middle-Late Jurassic continental rifting in northern Gondwana.Magmatism related to this tectonic event is preserved in both the YZSZ mélanges and Himalayan strata,but its tectonic significance requires further investigation.Based on this study of the YZSZ mélanges and the previous studies of YZSZ ophiolites,Gangdese belt igneous rocks,and sedimentary rocks,we have reconstructed the entire Wilson Cycle of the Yarlung Zangbo Neo-Tethys Ocean,mainly involving continental rifting and ocean opening,subduction initiation,ultraslow-spreading ridge-trench conversion,subduction re-initiation,and oceanic closure and initial India-Asia collision for the tectonic emplacement of ophiolites.These processes were associated not only with magmatic flare-ups and lulls in the Gangdese belt but also with two stages of ophiolite obduction.Our data therefore provide new insights into the evolution of the Yarlung Zangbo Neo-Tethys Ocean and related Tethyan geodynamics.Tong LIU Chuanzhou LIU Fuyuan WU Wenbin JI Chang ZHANG Weiqi ZHANG Zhenyu ZHANG 2023Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,12:0
18USEVis:Visual analytics of attention-based neural embedding in information retrieval显示文摘Neural attention-based encoders,which effectively attend sentence tokens to their associated context without being restricted by long-term distance or dependency,have demonstrated outstanding performance in embedding sentences into meaningful representations(embeddings).The Universal Sentence Encoder(USE)is one of the most well-recognized deep neural network(DNN)based solutions,which is facilitated with an attention-driven transformer architecture and has been pre-trained on a large number of sentences from the Internet.Besides the fact that USE has been widely used in many downstream applications,including information retrieval(IR),interpreting its complicated internal working mechanism remains challenging.In this work,we present a visual analytics solution towards addressing this challenge.Specifically,focused on semantics and syntactics(concepts and relations)that are critical to domain clinical IR,we designed and developed a visual analytics system,i.e.,USEVis.The system investigates the power of USE in effectively extracting sentences’semantics and syntactics through exploring and interpreting how linguistic properties are captured by attentions.Furthermore,by thoroughly examining and comparing the inherent patterns of these attentions,we are able to exploit attentions to retrieve sentences/documents that have similar semantics or are closely related to a given clinical problem in IR.By collaborating with domain experts,we demonstrate use cases with inspiring findings to validate the contribution of our work and the effectiveness of our system.Xiaonan Ji Yamei Tu Wenbin He Junpeng Wang Han-Wei Shen Po-Yin Yen 2021Visual Informatics2021,5,2:0

20Distinct roles of pH and organic ligands in the dissolution of goethite by cysteine显示文摘Electron shuttles such cysteine play an important role in Fe cycle and its availability in soils,while the roles of pH and organic ligands in this process are poorly understood.Herein,the reductive dissolution process of goethite by cysteine were explored in the presence of organic ligands.Our results showed that cysteine exhibited a strong reactivity towards goethite-a typical iron minerals in paddy soils with a rate constant ranging from 0.01 to0.1 hr^(-1).However,a large portion of Fe(Ⅱ) appeared to be 'structural species' retained on the surface.The decline of pH was favorable to generate more Fe(Ⅱ) ions and enhancing tendency of Fe(Ⅱ) release to solution.The decline of generation of Fe(Ⅱ) by increasing pH was likely to be caused by a lower redox potential and the nature of cysteine pH-dependent adsorption towards goethite.Interestingly,the co-existence of oxalate and citrate ligands also enhanced the rate constant of Fe(Ⅱ) release from 0.09 to 0.15 hr-1;nevertheless,they negligibly affected the overall generation of Fe(Ⅱ) in opposition to the pH effect.Further spectroscopic evidence demonstrated that two molecules of cysteine could form disulfide bonds(S-S) to generate cystine through oxidative dehydration,and subsequently,inducing electron transfer from cysteine to the structural Fe(Ⅲ) on goethite;meanwhile,those organic ligands act as Fe(Ⅱ) 'strippers'.The findings of this work provide new insights into the understanding of the different roles of pH and organic ligands on the generation and release of Fe induced by electron shuttles in soils.Ji Li Chenlu Shi Wenbin Zeng Yaru Wang Zebin Hong Yibing Ma Liping Fang 2022Journal of Environmental Sciences2022,34,3:0
