| 4 | Protective Effect of Magnesium Isoglycyrrhizinate on Ethanol-Induced Testicular Injuries in Mice显示文摘Objective:Ethanol treatment induces an increase in oxidative stress. As licorice compounds are potent antioxidants, our aim was to examine whether magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate attenuated lipid peroxidation, the major end-point of oxidative damage resulting from ethanol administration. Methods: Four groups(18 animals in each group) of male Kunming mice were used. The first group served as control and received 0.4 ml normal saline daily for 18 days orally. The second group of mice was given 56% ethanol at 16 ml/kg body weight per day for 18 days orally. The third group was given the same dose of ethanol and administrated magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (15 mg/kg.d, i.p.) for 18 days. The fourth group was given the same dose of ethanol and administrated with magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (45 mg/kg.d, i.p.) for 18 days. Twenty four hours after 9 days or 18 days of treatment the mice were sacrificed using 10% chloral hydrate. Sperm counts and motility in the epididymis were assessed. The lipid peroxidation and antioxidants of testicular mitochondria were also determined. The pathological changes of testicle tissue of the mice were observed by light microscopy. Results: Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate effectively prevented the ethanol-induced seminiferous epithelium disorganization and degeneration of Sertoli cells and germ cells. Sperm counts and motility of the magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate treated groups were higher than those of the alcohol treated group, but were lower than those of the control group. The drug exhibited an ability to counteract ethanol induced oxidative challenge as it effectively reduced testicular malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. | 5 | Enrichment of heavy metal elements and their adsorption on iron oxides during carbonate rock weathering process显示文摘Analysis of trace elements in the Lower Palaeozoic carbonate rock strata of the Beijing area shows that the Cr, Zn, Cd and Pb contents increase from primary carbonate rocks to weathered carbonate rocks and from primary carbonate rocks to the soil coexisting with carbonate rock. Distributions of Cr, Zn, Cd and Pb have the same trends as that of Fe2O3. Iron oxides play different roles at different stages of weathering of carbonate rock. The adsorption of Cr, Zn, Cd and Pb on Fe2O3 is greater than on FeO in soil. However, FeO, as a main component of clay mineral, is a better adsorbent of Cr, Zn, Cd and Pb than Fe2O3 in weathered and primary carbonate rocks. According to R-type clustering analysis, the main components of carbonate rock are divided into marine and continental sediments. | 6 | Evaluation of Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide Fumigation as a Method for the Bio-decontamination of the High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter Unit显示文摘Objective To evaluate the performance of vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) for the bio-decontamination of the high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter unit. Methods Self-made or commercially available bioindicators were placed at designated locations in the HEPA filter unit under VHP fumigation. The spores on coupons were then extracted by 0.5 h submergence in eluent followed by 200-time violent knocks. Results Due to the presence of HEPA filter in the box, spore recovery from coupons placed at the bottom of the filter downstream was significantly higher than that from coupons placed at the other locations. The gap of decontamination efficiency between the top and the bottom of the filter downstream became narrower with the exposure time extended. The decontamination efficiency of the bottom of the filter downstream only improved gently with the injection rate of H2O2 increased and the decontamination efficiency decreased instead when the injection rate exceeded 2.5 g/min. The commercially available bioindicators were competent to indicate the disinfection efficiency of VHP for the HEPA filter unit. Conclusion The HEPA filter unit is more difficult than common enclosure to decontaminate using VHP fumigation. Complete decontamination can be achieved by extending fumigation time. | 8 | Helicobacter pylori infection in the pharynx of patients with chronic pharyngitis detected with TDI-FP and modified Giemsa stain显示文摘AIM:To detect whether there is Helicobacter pylori(Hpylori)colonization in the pharynx mucous membraneof healthy people and whether chronic pharyngitis is re-lated to Hpylori infection.METHODS:Fifty cases of chronic pharyngitis refrac-tory over three months were prospectively studied fromMarch 2004 to August 2004 in the otolaryngology outpa-tient department of the Second Hospital of Xi'an JiaotongUniversity.Template-directed dye-terminator incorporat-ed with fluorescence polarization detection(TDI-FP)andmodified Giemsa stain were used to examine pharynxmucous membrane tissue for Hpylori colonization in thepatients with chronic pharyngitis and the healthy peopleas a control group.RESULTS:In the control group,no people were de-tected to have Hpylori in the pharynx.In contrast,in 50cases with chronic pharyngitis,19(38.0%)cases wereH pyIori positive with a TDI-FP assay and 4(8%)caseswere TDI-FP positive with Giemsa staining in the phar-ynx.Sixteen of the 50 pharyngitis cases had stomachailment history,11 cases(68.8%)of these 16 patientswere determined to be H pylori positive in the pharynxwith the TDI-FP assay.x^2 test showed that this infectionrate was remarkably higher(P=0.0007)than that in thecases without stomach ailment history.Giemsa stainingshowed that 3 cases(18.8%)of the patients with stom-ach ailment history were infected with H pylori in the pharynx,which was remarkably higher(P=0.042)thanthat in the patients without stomach ailment history(1case,which was 2.9%).CONCLUSION:H pylori may not be detected in thepharynx of healthy people.Chronic pharyngitis maybe related to H pylori infection.The infection rate withHpylori in the pharynx is higher in patients with stomachailment histories than in patients without stomach ail-ment histories,suggesting that chronic pharyngitis maybe related to stomach ailment history. | Jiang-Ping Zhang Zhen-Hui Peng Ju Zhang Xiang-Hong Zhang Qing Yin Zheng | 2006 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2006,12,3: | 6 |
| 9 | Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells retain immunomodulatory and anti-oxidative activities after neural induction显示文摘The immunomodulatory and anti-oxidative activities of differentiated mesenchymal stem cells contribute to their therapeutic efficacy in cell-replacement therapy. Mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from human umbilical cord and induced to differentiate with basic fibroblast growth factor, nerve growth factor, epidermal growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and forskolin. The mesenchymal stem cells became rounded with long processes and expressed the neural markers, Tuj1, neurofilament 200, microtubule-associated protein-2 and neuron-specific enolase. Nestin expression was significantly reduced after neural induction. The expression of immunoregulatory and anti-oxidative genes was largely unchanged prior to and after neural induction in mesenchymal stem cells. There was no significant difference in the effects of control and induced mesenchymal stem cells on lymphocyte proliferation in co-culture experiments. However, the expression of human leukocyte antigen-G decreased significantly in induced neuron-like cells. | 15 | PACLITAXEL PLUS CARBOPLATIN FOR WOMEN WITH ADVANCED BREAST CANCER显示文摘Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin for advanced breast cancer (ABC). Methods From January 2001 to March 2006, 45 patients with ABC were treated with combination chemotherapy of paclitaxel and carboplatin. Patients received infusion of paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 on day 1 every 3 weeks or 75 mg/m2 on day 1, 8, 15 every 4 weeks. Carboplatin was administrated on day 2 with a dose of area under the time-concentration curve (AUC) being 5. Results The median number of cycles was 3 (range, 2-6). The overall response rate was 62.2%. Median time to progression was 7.0 months (95%CI:5.1-8.9). Median overall survival was 29.0 months (95%CI: 20.1-37.9). One year survival rate was 73.3%. Response rate for first line and second line treatment were 62.1% and 62.5%, respectively. No significant difference in response existed between visceral metastasis and soft tissue metastasis. The main side effects included nausea/vomiting, neurotoxicity, and hematologic toxicities. Grade Ⅲ to Ⅳ adverse events included nausea/vomiting in 2 cases (4.4%), leukopenia in 17 cases (37.8%), and alopecia in 6 cases (13.3%).
