| 1 | Processes of coastal ecosystem carbon sequestration and approaches for increasing carbon sink显示文摘The oceans are the largest carbon pools on Earth, and play the role of a 'buffer' in climate change. Blue carbon, the carbon(mainly organic carbon) captured by marine ecosystems, is one of the important mechanisms of marine carbon storage.Blue carbon was initially recognized only in the form of visible coastal plant carbon sequestration. In fact, microorganisms(phytoplankton, bacteria, archaea, viruses, and protozoa), which did not receive much attention in the past, account for more than 90% of the total marine biomass and are the main contributors to blue carbon. Chinese coastal seas, equivalent to 1/3 of China's total land area, have a huge carbon sink potential needing urgently research and development. In this paper, we focus on the processes and mechanisms of coastal ocean's carbon sequestration and the approaches for increasing that sequestration. We discuss the structures of coastal ecosystems, the processes of carbon cycle, and the mechanisms of carbon sequestration. Using the evolution of coastal ocean's carbon sinks in sedimentary records over geologic times, we also discuss the possible effects of natural processes and anthropogenic activities on marine carbon sinks. | 2 | Development of integrated two-stage thermoelectric generators for large temperature difference显示文摘Multi-stage thermoelectric(TE) modules can withstand a large temperature difference and can be used to obtain a high conversion efficiency. In this study, two-stage PbTe/Bi2Te3 TE modules were developed with an enhanced efficiency through a comprehensive study of device structure design, module fabrication, and performance evaluation. PbTe-based AgPbmSbTem+2(abbreviated as LAST) is a typically high ZT material, while the corresponding TE module was rarely reported so far. How to utilize LAST to fabricate high efficiency TE modules therefore remains a central problem. Finite element simulation indicates that the temperature stability of the two-stage module for LAST is better than that of two-segmented module. Compared to Cu,Ni, and Ni-Fe alloys, Co-Fe alloy is an effective metallization layer for PbTe due to its low contact resistance and thin diffusion layer. By sintering a slice of Cu on TE legs, pure tinfoil can be used as a common welding method for mid-temperature TE modules. | 3 | China's sizeable and uncertain carbon sink: a perspective from GOSAT显示文摘Despite the agreement that China’s terrestrial ecosystems can provide a carbon sink and offset carbon dioxide(CO2)emissions from fossil fuels,the magnitude and spatial distribution of the sink remain uncertain.Accurate quantification of the carbon sequestration capacity of China’s terrestrial ecosystems has profound scientific and policy implications.Here,we report on the magnitude and patterns of China’s terrestrial carbon sink using the global monthly CO2flux data product from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite(GOSAT),the world’s first satellite dedicated to global greenhouse gas observation.We use the first year’s data from GOSAT(June 2009–May2010)that are currently available to assess China’s biospheric carbon fluxes.Our results show that China’s terrestrial ecosystems provide a carbon sink of-0.21 Pg C a-1.The consumption of fossil fuels in China leads to carbon dioxide emissions of 1.90 Pg C a-1into the atmosphere,approximately 11.1%of which is offset by China’s terrestrial ecosystems.China’s terrestrial ecosystems play a significant role in offsetting fossil fuel emissions and slowing down the buildup of CO2in the atmosphere.Our analysis based on GOSAT data offers a new perspective on the magnitude and distribution of China’s carbon sink.Our results show that China’s terrestrial ecosystems provide a sizeable and uncertain carbon sink,and further research is needed to reduce the uncertainty in its magnitude and distribution. | Li Zhang Jingfeng Xiao Li Li Liping Lei Jing Li | 2014 | Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,14: | 5 |

| 6 | Activation of transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase DDR1-STAT3 cascade by extracellular matrix remodeling promotes liver metastatic colonization in uveal melanoma显示文摘Colonization is believed a rate-limiting step of metastasis cascade.However,its underlying mechanism is not well understood.Uveal melanoma(UM),which is featured with single organ liver metastasis,may provide a simplified model for realizing the complicated colonization process.Because DDR1 was identified to be overexpressed in UM cell lines and specimens,and abundant pathological deposition of extracellular matrix collagen,a type of DDR1 ligand,was noted in the microenvironment of liver in metastatic patients with UM,we postulated the hypothesis that DDR1 and its ligand might ignite the interaction between UM cells and their surrounding niche of liver thereby conferring strengthened survival,proliferation,sternness and eventually promoting metastatic colonization in liver.We tested this hypothesis and found that DDR1 promoted these malignant cellular phenotypes and facilitated metastatic colonization of UM in liver.Mechanistically,UM cells secreted TGF-β1 which induced quiescent hepatic stellate cells(qHSCs)into activated HSCs(aHSCs)which secreted collagen type I.Such a remodeling of extracellular matrix,in turn,activated DDR1,strengthening survival through upregulating STAT3-dependent Mcl-1 expression,enhancing sternness via upregulating STAT3-dependent S0X2,and promoting clonogenicity in cancer cells.Targeting DDR1 by using 7rh,a specific inhibitor,repressed proliferation and survival in vitro and in vivo outgrowth.More importantly,targeting cancer cells by pharmacological inactivation of DDR1 or targeting microenvironmental TGF-β1-collagen I loop exhibited a prominent anti-metastasis effect in mice.In conclusion,targeting DDR1 signaling and TGF-β1 signaling may be a novel approach to diminish hepatic metastasis in UM. | Wei Dai Shenglan Liu Shubo Wang Li Zhao Xiao Yang Jingfeng Zhou Yun Wang Jing Zhang Ping Zhang Ke Ding Yangqiu Li Jingxuan Pan | 2021 | Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy2021,6,6: | 3 |
| 7 | Variations in stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in atmospheric water vapor in the marine boundary layer across a wide latitude range显示文摘The newly-developed cavity ring-down laser absorption spectroscopy analyzer with special calibration protocols has enabled the direct measurement of atmospheric vapor isotopes at high spatial and temporal resolution. This paper presents real-time hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope data for atmospheric water vapor above the sea surface, over a wide range of latitudes spanning from 38°N to 69°S. Our results showed relatively higher values of δ18O and δ2H in the subtropical regions than those in the tropical and high latitude regions, and also a notable decreasing trend in the Antarctic coastal region. By combining the hydrogen and oxygen isotope data with meteoric water line and backward trajectory model analysis,we explored the kinetic fractionation caused by subsiding air masses and related saturated vapor pressure in the subtropics, and the evaporation-driven kinetic fractionation in the Antarctic region. Simultaneous observations of meteorological and marine variables were used to interpret the isotopic composition characteristics and influential factors, indicating that d-excess is negatively correlated with humidity across a wide range of latitudes and weather conditions worldwide. Coincident with previous studies, d-excess is also positively correlated with sea surface temperature and air temperature(T air), with greater sensitivity to T air. Thus, atmospheric vapor isotopes measured with high accuracy and good spatial–temporal resolution could act as informative tracers for exploring the water cycle at different regional scales. | 8 | Strong controls of daily minimum temperature on the autumn photosynthetic phenology of subtropical vegetation in China显示文摘Background:Vegetation phenology research has largely focused on temperate deciduous forests,thus limiting our understanding of the response of evergreen vegetation to climate change in tropical and subtropical regions.Results:Using satellite solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence(SIF)and MODIS enhanced vegetation index(EVI)data,we applied two methods to evaluate temporal and spatial patterns of the end of the growing season(EGS)in subtropical vegetation in China,and analyze the dependence of EGS on preseason maximum and minimum temperatures as well as cumulative precipitation.Our results indicated that the averaged EGS derived from the SIF and EVI based on the two methods(dynamic threshold method and derivative method)was later than that derived from gross primary productivity(GPP)based on the eddy covariance technique,and the time-lag for EGSsif and EGSevi was approximately 2 weeks and 4 weeks,respectively.We found that EGS was positively correlated with preseason minimum temperature and cumulative precipitation(accounting for more than 73%and 62%of the study areas,respectively),but negatively correlated with preseason maximum temperature(accounting for more than 59%of the study areas).In addition,EGS was more sensitive to the changes in the preseason minimum temperature than to other climatic factors,and an increase in the preseason minimum temperature significantly delayed the EGS in evergreen forests,shrub and grassland.Conclusions:Our results indicated that the SIF outperformed traditional vegetation indices in capturing the autumn photosynthetic phenology of evergreen forest in the subtropical region of China.We found that minimum temperature plays a significant role in determining autumn photosynthetic phenology in the study region.These findings contribute to improving our understanding of the response of the EGS to climate change in subtropical vegetation of China,and provide a new perspective for accurately evaluating the role played by evergreen vegetation in the regional carbon budget. | Peixin Ren Zelin Liu Xiaolu Zhou Changhui Peng Jingfeng Xiao Songhan Wang Xing Li Peng Li | 2021 | Forest Ecosystems2021,8,3: | 2 |
