Application of high silica zeolite ZSM-5 in a hybrid treatment process based on sequential adsorption and ozonation for VOCs elimination显示文摘In this study,a hydrophobic synthetic zeolite, namely ZSM-5 is chosen as an adsorbent/catalyst for toluene removal.Experimental results showed that toluene adsorption onto ZSM-5 was favourable, following a Langmuir adsorption isotherm model.ZSM-5 zeolite was regenerated using gaseous ozone at low temperature.Adsorbed toluene was oxidised, releasing mainly CO_2 and H_2O.Traces of oxidation by-products such as acetic acid and acetaldehyde were formed and remained adsorbed after the oxidativate regeneration with ozone. After four successive cycles of adsorption/ozonation,the adsorption efficiency was not affected(92%-99%).These results showed that volatile organic compound(VOC)removal by adsorption onto ZSM-5 zeolite followed by ozone regeneration could be used as a promising hybrid process for the control of VOC emissions in terms of efficiency. | Hicham Zaitan Marie Hélène Manero Héctor Valdés | 2016 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2016,28,3: | 23
Alcohol metabolites and lipopolysaccharide: Roles in the development and/or progression of alcoholic liver disease显示文摘The onset of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is initiated by different cell types in the liver and a number of different factors including: products derived from ethanol-induced inflammation, ethanol metabolites, and the indirect reactions from those metabolites. Ethanol oxidation results in the production of metabolites that have been shown to bind and form protein adducts, and to increase inflammatory, fibrotic and cirrhotic responses. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has many deleterious effects and plays a significant role in a number of disease processes by increasing inflammatory cytokine release. In ALD, LPS is thought to be derived from a breakdown in the intestinal wall enabling LPS from resident gut bacterial cell walls to leak into the blood stream. The ability of adducts and LPS to independently stimulate the various cells of the liver provides for a two-hit mechanism by which various biological responses are induced and result in liver injury. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to evaluate the effects of a two-hit combination of ethanol metabolites and LPS on the cells of the liver to increase inflamma-tion and fi brosis, and play a role in the development and/or progression of ALD. | Courtney S Schaffert Michael J Duryee Carlos D Hunter Bartlett C Hamilton 3rd Amy L DeVeney Mary M Huerter Lynell W Klassen Geoffrey M Thiele | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,10: | 20

Beyond the Pediatric end-stage liver disease system: Solutions for infants with biliary atresia requiring liver transplant显示文摘Biliary atresia(BA), a chronic progressive cholestatic disease of infants, is the leading cause for liver transplant in children, especially in patients under two years of age. BA can be successfully treated with the Kasai portoenterostomy; however most patients still require a liver transplant, with up to one half of BA children needing a transplant by age two. In the current pediatric end-stage liver disease system, children with BA face the risk of not receiving a liver in a safe and timely manner. In this review, we discuss a number of possible solutions to help these children. We focus on two general approaches:(1) preventing/delaying need for transplantation, by optimizing the success of the Kasai operation; and(2) expediting transplantation when needed, by performing techniques other than the standard deceased-donor, whole, ABO-matched organ transplant. | Mary Elizabeth M Tessier Sanjiv Harpavat Ross W Shepherd Girish S Hiremath Mary L Brandt Amy Fisher John A Goss | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,32: | 14
Hepatocellular carcinoma: Review of disease and tumor biomarkers显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is a common malignancy and now the second commonest global cause of cancer death. HCC tumorigenesis is relatively silent and patients experience late symptomatic presentation. As the option for curative treatments is limited to early stage cancers, diagnosis in non-symptomatic individuals is crucial. International guidelines advise regular surveillance of high-risk populations but the current tools lack sufficient sensitivity for early stage tumors on the background of a cirrhotic nodular liver. A number of novel biomarkers have now been suggested in the literature, which may reinforce the current surveillance methods. In addition, recent metabonomic and proteomic discoveries have established specific metabolite expressions in HCC, according to Warburg's phenomenon of altered energy metabolism. With clinical validation, a simple and non-invasive test from the serum or urine may be performed to diagnose HCC, particularly benefiting low resource regions where the burden of HCC is highest. | Jin Un Kim Mohamed I F Shariff Mary M E Crossey Maria Gomez-Romero Elaine Holmes I Jane Cox Haddy K S Fye Ramou Njie Simon D Taylor-Robinson | 2016 | World Journal of Hepatology2016,8,10: | 13

Circular smooth muscle contributes to esophageal shortening during peristalsis显示文摘AIM:To study the angle between the circular smooth muscle(CSM) and longitudinal smooth muscle(LSM) fibers in the distal esophagus.METHODS:In order to identify possible mechanisms for greater shortening in the distal compared to proximal esophagus during peristalsis, the angles between the LSM and CSM layers were measured in 9 cadavers. The outer longitudinal layer of the muscularis propria was exposed after stripping the outer serosa. The inner circular layer of the muscularis propria was then revealed after dissection of the esophageal mucosa and the underlying muscularis mucosa.Photographs of each specimen were taken with half of the open esophagus folded back showing both the outer longitudinal and inner circular muscle layers.Angles were measured every one cm for 10 cm proximal to the squamocolumnar junction(SCJ) by two independent investigators. Two human esophagi were obtained from organ transplant donors and the angles between the circular and longitudinal smooth muscle layers were measured using micro-computed tomography(micro CT) and Image J software.RESULTS:All data are presented as mean ± SE.The CSM to LSM angle at the SCJ and 1 cm proximal to SCJ on the autopsy specimens was 69.3 ± 4.62 degrees vs 74.9 ± 3.09 degrees,P = 0.32.The CSM to LSM angle at SCJ were statistically significantly lower than at 2,3,4 and 5 cm proximal to the SCJ,69.3 ± 4.62 degrees vs 82.58 ± 1.34 degrees,84.04 ± 1.64 degrees,84.87 ± 1.04 degrees and 83.72 ± 1.42 degrees,P = 0.013,P = 0.008,P = 0.004,P = 0.009 respectively. The CSM to LSM angle at SCJ was also statistically significantly lower than the angles at 6,7 and 8 cm proximal to the SCJ,69.3 ± 4.62 degrees vs 80.18 ± 2.09 degrees,81.81 ± 1.75 degrees and 80.96 ± 2.04 degrees,P = 0.05,P = 0.02,P = 0.03 respectively. The CSM to LSM angle at 1 cm proximal to SCJ was statistically significantly lower than at 3,4 and 5 cm proximal to the SCJ,74.94 ± 3.09 degrees vs 84.04 ± 1.64 degrees,84.87 ± 1.04 degrees and 83.72 ± 1.42 degrees,P = 0.019,P = 0.008,P = 0.02 respectively. At 10 cm above SCJ the angle was 80.06 ± 2.13 degrees which is close to being perpendicular but less than 90 degrees. The CSM to LSM angles measured on virtual dissection of the esophagus and the stomach on micro CT at the SCJ and 1 cm proximal to the SCJ were 48.39 ± 0.72 degrees and 50.81 ± 1.59 degrees.Rather than the angle of the CSM and LSM being perpendicular in the esophagus we found an acute angulation between these two muscle groups throughout the lower 10 cm of the esophagus.CONCLUSION:The oblique angulation of the CSM may contribute to the significantly greater shortening of distal esophagus when compared to the mid and proximal esophagus during peristalsis. | Anil K Vegesna Keng-Yu Chuang Ramashesai Besetty Steven J Phillips Alan S Braverman Mary F Barbe Michael R Ruggieri Larry S Miller | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,32: | 7
Antioxidant Effect of Sepia Ink Extract on Extrahepatic Cholestasis Induced by Bile Duct Ligation in Rats显示文摘Objective The aim of our study was to assess the complications of hepatic fibrosis associated with bile duct ligation and the potential curative role of sepia ink extract in hepatic damage induced by bile duct ligation. Methods Rattus norvegicus rats were divided into 3 groups: Sham-operated group, model rats that underwent common bile duct ligation(BDL), and BDL rats treated orally with sepia ink extract(200 mg/kg body weight) for 7, 14, and 28 d after BDL. Results There was a significant reduction in hepatic enzymes, ALP, GGT, bilirubin levels, and oxidative stress in the BDL group after treatment with sepia ink extract. Collagen deposition reduced after sepia ink extract treatment as compared to BDL groups, suggesting that the liver was repaired. Histopathological examination of liver treated with sepia ink extract showed moderate degeneration in the hepatic architecture and mild degeneration in hepatocytes as compared to BDL groups. Conclusion Sepia ink extract provides a curative effect and an antioxidant capacity on BDL rats and could ameliorate the complications of liver cholestasis. | Hanan Saleh Amel M Soliman Ayman S Mohamed Mohamed-Assem S Marie | 2015 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2015,28,8: | 6
Pancreatitis in patients with pancreas divisum:Imaging features at MRI and MRCP显示文摘AIM:To determine the magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)features of pancreatitis with pancreas divisum(PD)and the differences vs pancreatitis without divisum.METHODS:Institutional review board approval was obtained and the informed consent requirement was waived for this HIPAA-compliant study.During one year period,1439 consecutive patients underwent successful MRCP without injection of secretin and abdominal MRI studies for a variety of clinical indications using a 1.5 T magnetic resonance scanner. Two experienced radiologists retrospectively reviewed all the studies in consensus.Disputes were resolved via consultation with a third experienced radiologist. The assessment included presence and the imaging findings of PD,pancreatitis, and distribution of abnormalities. The pancreatitis with divisum constituted the study group while the pancreatitis without divisum served as the control group.MRCP and MRI findings were correlated with final diagnosis.Fisher exact tests and Pearson × 2 tests were performed.RESULTS:Pancreatitis was demonstrated at MRCP and MRI in 173 cases(38 cases with and 135 cases without divisum)among the 1439 consecutive cases. The recurrent acute pancreatitis accounted for 55.26%(21 of 38)in pancreatitis patients associated with PD,which was higher than 6.67%(9 of 135)in the control group, whereas the chronic pancreatitis was a dominant type in the control group(85.19%,115 of 135)when compared to the study group(42.11%,16 of 38)(χ 2 = 40.494,P < 0.0001).In cases of pancreatitis with PD,the dorsal pancreatitis accounted for a much higher percentage than that in pancreatitis without PD(17 of 38,44.74% vs 30 of 135,22.22%)(χ 2 = 7.257,P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:MRCP and MRI can depict the features of pancreatitis associated with divisum.Recurrent acute pancreatitis and isolated dorsal involvement are more common in patients with divisum. | Deng-Bin Wang Jinxing Yu Ann S Fulcher Mary A Turner | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,30: | 5
Is breast conservative surgery a reasonable option in multifocal or multicentric tumors?显示文摘The incidence of multifocal(MF) and multicentric(MC) carcinomas varies widely among clinical studies, depending on definitions and methods for pathological sampling.Magnetic resonance imaging is increasingly used because it can help identify additional and conventionally occult tumors with high sensitivity. However, false positive lesions might incorrectly influence treatment decisions. Therefore, preoperative biopsies must be performed to avoid unnecessary surgery. Most studies have shown higher lymph node involvement rates in MF/MC tumors than in unifocal tumors. However, the rate of local recurrences is usually low after breast conservative treatment(BCT) of MC/MF tumors. It has been suggested that BCT is a reasonable option for MC/MF tumors in women aged 50-69 years, with small tumors and absence of extensive ductal carcinoma in situ.A metaanalysis showed an apparent decreased overall survival in MC/MF tumors but data are controversial.Surgery should achieve both acceptable cosmetic results and negative margins, which requires thorough preoperative radiological workup and localization of lesions.Boost radiotherapy techniques must be evaluated since double boosts might result in increased toxicity, namely fibrosis. In conclusion,BCT is feasible in selected patients with MC/MF but the choice of surgery must be discussed in a multidisciplinary team comprising at least radiologists, surgeons and radiotherapists. | Gilles Houvenaeghel Agnès Tallet Aurélie Jalaguier-Coudray Monique Cohen Marie Bannier Camille Jauffret-Fara Eric Lambaudie | 2016 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2016,7,2: | 4
Recurrence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis: Nine years after a bilateral lung transplantation显示文摘Lymphangioleiomyomatosis(LAM) is a rare, slowly progressive lethal lung disease primary afflicting young women. LAM is characterized by proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle cells that target the lungs, causing cystic destruction and eventual respiratory failure leading to death. Recent ten year mortality due to end stage LAM has been reported to be approximately 10%-20%, but may vary. The decline in lung function in LAM is gradual, occurring at a rate of about 3% to 15% per year but can vary from patient to patient. But recently therapy with mammalian target of rapamycin(m TOR) inhibitors such as sirolimus has shown promising results in the stabilization of lung function and reduction of chylous effusions in LAM. Lung transplantation is a viable option for patients who continue to have decline in lung function despite m TOR therapy. Unique issues that may occur post-transplant in a recipient with LAM include development of chylous effusion and a risk of recurrence. We describe a case of LAM recurrence in a bilateral lung transplant recipient who developed histological findings of LAM nine years after transplantation. | Khawaja S Zaki Zahra Aryan Atul C Mehta Olufemi Akindipe Marie Budev | 2016 | World Journal of Transplantation2016,6,1: | 3
Chemical conjugation of a novel antibody interleukin 2 immunoconjugate against c erbB 2 product显示文摘Objective To develop a new chemical method to produce a monoclonal antibody (MoAb) 520C9/recombinant human interleukin 2 (rhIL 2) conjugate Methods MoAb 520C9 reactive with the protooncogene c erbB 2 product P185 was chemically conjugated with rhIL 2 by using a simple two step method First, the rhIL 2 was activated by Sulfosuccinimidyl 4 [N maleimidomethyl] cyclohexane 1 carboxylate, a heterobifunctional linker, and N succinimidyl s acetylthioacetate was introduced onto 520C9 Then SATA on the 520C9 was reacted with the maleimide group on the activated rhIL 2 to generate 520C9 rhIL 2 immunoconjugate Results The immunoconjugate retained the antigen binding activity compared to the respective native antibody as determined by an indirect live cell binding assay The immunoconjugate also possessed IL 2 activity as measured by the standard CTLL 2 cells proliferation assay and the stimulation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) into lymphokine activated killer cells Conclusion Our method of conjugation of rhIL 2 to 520C9 preserves the binding activity of the antibody and the cytokine function of IL 2 This simple and efficient method of conjugation should be applicable to other types of MoAbs and recombinant | 李君 Sharon E Lee Marie Belciug David B Ring Cheuk S Kwok | 2000 | Chinese Medical Journal2000,,2: | 3
Paclobutrazol and Its Use in Fruit Production:A Review显示文摘There are documentary records referring to paclobutrazol(PBZ)as a growth bioregulator that inhibits the gibberellin synthesis and its application increases yields in fruit and vegetable crop productions. Its agronomic management includes it as an emerging technology to reduce vigour, promote flower induction and flower development in fruit trees with increased economic returns. Its use is banned in some countries because of concerns about residues that can cause harmful effects on the environment. Therefore, the aim of this article was to collect, analyse and summarise relevant information on the use of PBZ in fruit tree production and its possible risks to the environment. The results obtained indicated that the application of PBZ can be effective in solving some problems related to flowering if it is applied in the right amount and at the right time. However,it is necessary to elucidate the physiological processes with which it is associated and its response to be taken into account to increase yield.PBZ is currently used in fruit trees such as mango, lime, apple and guava, increasing their productivity. However, some studies have shown its residual effect on the environment. Therefore,PBZ is a viable strategy, because it presents a series of advantages in the production of fruit trees. However,it is vital to generate protocols that seek its regulation with a rational and sustainable approach. | Laura Raquel Orozco-Meléndez Ofelia Adriana Hernández-Rodríguez Oscar Cruz-Álvarez Loreto Robles-Hernández Graciela Dolores Avila-Quezada Esteban Sánchez Chavez DamiánAarón Porras-Flores Dámaris Leopoldina Ojeda-Barrios | 2022 | Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,1: | 2
