Colorectal cancer population screening programs worldwide in 2016: An update显示文摘Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world. The incidence and mortality show wide geographical variations.Screening is recommended to reduce both incidence and mortality. However, there are significant differences among studies in implementation strategies and detection. This review aimed to present the results and strategies of different screening programs worldwide. We reviewed the literature on national and international screening programs published in Pub Med,on web pages, and in clinical guidelines.CRC Screening programs are currently underway in most European countries,Canada, specific regions in North and South America,Asia, and Oceania. The most extensive screening strategies were based on fecal occult blood testing, and more recently, the fecal immunochemical test(FIT).Participation in screening has varied greatly among different programs. The Netherlands showed the highest participation rate(68.2%)and some areas of Canada showed the lowest(16%).Participation rates were highest among women and in programs that used the FIT test.Men exhibited the greatest number of positive results. The FIT test has been the most widely used screening program worldwide. The advent of this test has increased participation rates and the detection of positive results. | Mercedes Navarro Andrea Nicolas Angel Ferrandez Angel Lanas | 2017 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,20: | 43
Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial activities of ethanol extracts of selected traditional Chinese medicinal herbs显示文摘Objective:To evaluate in ritro antimicrobial activities of selected 58 ethno-medicinal plant extracts with a view to assess their therapeutic potential. Methods:A total of 58 traditional Chinese medicinal plants were carefully selected based on the literature review and their traditional use.The antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts of these medicinal plants were tested against fungi(Aspergillus funigaius),yeast(Candida albicans),gram-negative(Acirelobacter haumannii and Pseudornnruis aeruginosa)and gram-positive bacteria(Staphglococcus aureus). The activities were tested at three different concentrations of 1.00,0.10 and 0.01 mg/mL.The data was analysed using Gene data Screener program. Results:The measured antimicrobial activities indicated that out of the 58 plant extracts,15 extracts showed anti-fungal activity and 23 extracts exhibited anti-bacterial activity.Eight plant extracts have exhibited both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities. For instance,Eucommia ulmoides,Pohgonum cuspidcrtum,Poria cocas and Uncaria rhineophylla showed activity against both bacterial and fungal strains, indicating their broad spectrum of activity. Conclusions:The results revealed that the ethanol extracts of 30 plants out of the selected 58 possess significant antimicrobial activities. It is interesting to note that the findings from the current study are consistent with the traditional use.A clear correlation has also been found between the antimicrobial activity and the flavonoid content of the plant extracts which is in agreement with the literature.Hence.the results presented here can be used to guide the selection of potential plant species for the isolation and structure elucidation of novel antimicrobial compounds in order to establish the structure-activity relationship. This in turn is expected to lead the way to the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents for therapeutic use. | Lin Zhang Anjaneya S.Ravipati Sundar R Koyyalamudi Sang Chul Jeong Narsimha Reddy John Bartlett Paul T.Smith Mercedes de la Cruz Maria Cndida Monteiro ngeles Melguizo Ester Jimnez Francisca Vicente | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,9: | 23
Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes promote neurogenesis and cognitive function recovery in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease显示文摘Studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes can enhance neural plasticity and improve cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes on neurogenesis and cognitive capacity in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease.Alzheimer’s disease mouse models were established by injection of beta amyloid 1?42 aggregates into dentate gyrus bilaterally.Morris water maze and novel object recognition tests were performed to evaluate mouse cognitive deficits at 14 and 28 days after administration.Afterwards, neurogenesis in the subventricular zone was determined by immunofluorescence using doublecortin and PSA-NCAM antibodies. Results showed that mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes stimulated neurogenesis in the subventricular zone and alleviated beta amyloid 1?42-induced cognitive impairment, and these effects are similar to those shown in the mesenchymal stem cells. These findings provide evidence to validate the possibility of developing cell-free therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease. All procedures and experiments were approved by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(CICUAL)(approval No.CICUAL 2016-011)on April 25,2016. | Edwin E. | 4 | Assessment of drug-induced hepatotoxicity in clinical practice: A challenge for gastroenterologists显示文摘Currently, pharmaceutical preparations are serious contributors to liver disease; hepatotoxicity ranking as the most frequent cause for acute liver failure and post-commercialization regulatory decisions. The diagnosis of hepatotoxicity remains a difficult task because of the lack of reliable markers for use in general clinical practice. To incriminate any given drug in an episode of liver dysfunction is a step-by-step process that requires a high degree of suspicion, compatible chronology, awareness of the drug’s hepatotoxic potential, the exclusion of alternative causes of liver damage and the ability to detect the presence of subtle data that favors a toxic etiology. This process is time-consuming and the final result is frequently inaccurate. Diagnostic algorithms may add consistency to the diagnostic process by translating the suspicion into a quantitative score. Such scales are useful since they provide a framework that emphasizes the features that merit attention in cases of suspected hepatic adverse reaction as well. Current efforts in collecting bona fide cases of drug-induced hepatotoxicity will make refinements of existing scales feasible. It is now relatively easy to accommodate relevant data within the scoring system and to delete low-impact items. Efforts should also be directed toward the development of an abridged instrument for use in evaluating suspected drug-induced hepatotoxicity at the very beginning of the diagnosis and treatment process when clinical decisions need to be made. The instrument chosen would enable a confident diagnosis to be made on admission of the patient and treatment to be fine-tuned as further information is collected. | Raúl J Andrade Mercedes Robles Alejandra Fernández-Castaer Susana López-Ortega M Carmen López-Vega M Isabel Lucena | 2007 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,3: | 18

Study on mechanism of mercury oxidation by fly ash from coal combustion显示文摘To understand the interaction of fly ash and mercury, systematic experiments on mercury oxidation in single flue gas composition are conducted on a fixed bed reactor system, the desorption rate and speciation of mercury are valuated. The results indicate that fly ash itself can significantly promote elemental mercury oxidation. A classification of fly ash activated sites is developed according to the speciation of mercury during adsorption-desorption tests, the reaction mechanism of mercury oxidation by fly ash is proposed. Acid gas can promote mercury oxidation and improve the stability of oxidation product. Lattice oxygen is an important oxidant of mercury oxidation. | ZHAO YongChun ZHANG JunYing LIU Jing DIAZ-SOMOANO Mercedes MARTINEZ-TARAZONA M. | 8 | Experimental study on fly ash capture mercury in flue gas显示文摘Systematic experiments were conducted on a fixed-bed reactor to investigate the interaction between fly ash and mercury, the results implied that fly ash can capture mercury effectively.Among different fly ashes, the unburned carbon in the FA2 and FA3 fly ashes has the highest mercury capture capacity,up to 10.3 and 9.36 μg/g,respectively,which is close to that of commercial activated carbon. There is no obvious relationship between mercury content and carbon content or BET surface area of fly ash.Petrography classification standard was applied to distinguish fly ash carbon particles.Carbon content is not the only variable that controls mercury capture on fly ash, there are likely significant differences in the mercury capture capacities of the various carbon forms.Mercury capture capacity mainly depends on the content of anisotropy carbon particles with porous network structure. | Mercedes DíAZ-SOMOANO Patricia ABAD-VALLE M.Rosa MARTíNEZ-TARAZONA | 2010 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,4: | 12
Cardiac evaluation of liver transplant candidates显示文摘Physicians previously thought that heart disease was rare in patients with end stage liver disease. However, recent evidence shows that the prevalence of ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathy is increased in transplant candidates compared to most other surgical candidates. Investigators estimate that up to 26% of all liver transplant candidates have at least one critical coronary artery stenosis and that at least half of these patients will die perioperatively of cardiac complications. Cardiomyopathy also occurs in greater frequency. While all patients with advanced cardiac disease have defects in cardiac performance, a larger than expected number of patients have classical findings of dilated, restrictive and hypertropic cardiomyopathy. This may explain why up to 56% of patients suffer from hypoxemia due to pulmonary edema following transplant surgery. There is considerable controversy on how to screen transplant candidates for the presence of heart disease. Questions focus upon, which patients should be screened and what tests should be used. This review examines screening strategies for transplant candidates and details the prognostic value of common tests used to identify ischemic heart disease. We also review the physiological consequences of cardiomyopathy in transplant candidates and explore the specific syndrome of 'cirrhotic cardiomyopathy'. | Mercedes Susan Mandell JoAnn Lindenfeld Mei-Yung Tsou Michael Zimmerman | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,22: | 8
Gut epithelial barrier dysfunction in humanimmunodeficiency virus-hepatitis C virus coinfectedpatients:Influence on innate and acquired immunity显示文摘Even in cases where viral replication has been controlled by antiretroviral therapy for long periods of time, human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-infected patients have several non-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS) related co-morbidities, including liver disease, cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive decline, which have a clear impact on survival. It has been considered that persistent innate and acquired immune activation contributes to the pathogenesis of these non-AIDS related diseases. Immune activation has been related with several conditions, remarkably with the bacterial translocation related with the intestinal barrier damage by the HIV or by hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related liver cirrhosis. Consequently, increased morbidity and mortality must be expected in HIV-HCV coinfected patients. Disrupted gut barrier lead to an increased passage of microbial products and to an activation of the mucosal immune system and secretion of inflammatory mediators, which in turn might increase barrier dysfunction. In the present review, the intestinal barrier structure, measures of intestinal barrier dysfunction and the modifications of them in HIV monoinfection and in HIV-HCV coinfection will be considered. Both pathogenesis and the consequences for the progression of liver disease secondary to gut microbial fragment leakage and immune activation will be assessed. | Mercedes Márquez Clotilde Fernández Gutiérrez delÁlamo JoséAntonio Girón-González | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,4: | 7
Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas and Helicobacter pylori infection:A Colombian perspective显示文摘AIM:To assess the significance of chromosome translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21),B-cell lymphoma 10 (BCL-10) protein and Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection in gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in Colombia.METHODS:Fifty cases of gastric MALT lymphoma and their respective post-treatment follow-up biopsies were examined to assess the presence of the translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21) as identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization;to detect protein expression patterns of BCL10 using immunohistochemistry;and for evaluation of tumor histology to determine the correlation of these factors and resistance to H.pylori eradication.RESULTS:Infection with H.pylori was confirmed in all cases of gastric MALT lymphoma in association with chronic gastritis.Bacterial eradication led to tumor regression in 66% of cases. The translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21) was not present in any of these cases, nor was there evidence of tumor transformation to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.Thirty-four percent of the patients showed resistance to tumor regression, and within this group,7 cases, representing 14% of all those analyzed, were considered to be t(11;18)(q21;q21)-positive gastric MALT lymphomas.Protein expression of BCL10 in the nucleus was associated with the presence of translocation and treatment resistance.Cases that were considered unresponsive to therapy were histologically characterized by the presence of homogeneous tumor cells and a lack of plasmacytic differentiation.Responder cases exhibited higher cellular heterogeneity and a greater frequency of plasma cells.CONCLUSION:Both t(11;18)(q21;q21)-positive MALT lymphoma cases and those with nuclear BCL10 expression are considered resistant to H.pylori eradication. It is suggested that chronic antigenic stimulation is not a dominant event in resistant cases. | Sally Yepes Maria Mercedes Torres Carlos Saavedra Rafael Andrade | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,7: | 6

Superior growth performance in broiler chicks fed chelated compared to inorganic zinc in presence of elevated dietary copper显示文摘Background: The goal of this study was to compare the antagonism of elevated dietary Cu(250 mg/kg) from Cu SO4 on three different Zn sources(Zn SO4· H2O; [Zn bis(-2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid)], Zn(HMTBa)2,a chelated Zn methionine hydroxy analogue; and Zn-Methionine), as measured using multiple indices of animal performance in ROSS 308 broilers. Methods: Three experiments were conducted in broiler chicks fed a semi-purified diet. Al birds were fed a Zn-deficient diet(8.5 mg/kg diet) for 1 wk, and then provided with the experimental diets for 2 wks. Results: Experiment 1 was a 2 × 2 factorial design with two levels of Cu(8 vs. 250 mg/kg diet from Cu SO4) and two Zn sources at 30 mg/kg [Zn SO4· H2 O vs. Zn(HMTBa)2]. Elevated Cu impaired growth performance only in birds fed Zn SO4.Compared to Zn SO4· H2 O, Zn(HMTBa)2improved feed intake(12 %; P < 0.001) and weight gain(12 %, P < 0.001) and the benefits were more pronounced in the presence of 250 mg/kg diet Cu. Experiment 2 was a dose titration of Zn SO4· H2 O and Zn(HMTBa)2at 30, 45, 60, and 75 mg/kg diet in the presence of 250 mg/kg Cu SO4. Feed:gain was decreased and tibia Zn was increased with increasing Zn levels from 30 to 75 mg/kg. Birds fed Zn(HMTBa)2consumed more food and gained more weight compared to birds fed Zn SO4, especially at lower supplementation levels(30 and45 mg/kg; interaction P < 0,05). Experiment 3 compared two organic Zn sources(Zn(HMTBa)2vs. Zn-Methionine)at 30 mg/kg with or without 250 mg/kg Cu SO4. No interactions were observed between Zn sources and Cu levels on performance or tissue mineral concentrations. High dietary Cu decreased weight gain(P < 0.01). Tibia Cu and liver Cu were significantly increased with 250 mg/kg dietary Cu supplementation(P < 0.01). No difference was observed between the two Zn sources. Conclusions: Dietary 250 mg/kg Cu significantly impaired feed intake and weight gain in birds fed Zn SO4· H2 O,but had less impact in birds fed Zn(HMTBa)2. No difference was observed between the two organic zinc sources. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that chelated organic Zn is better utilized than inorganic zinc in the presence of elevated Cu. | Junmei Zhao Robert B. | 14 | Laparoscopic approach in gastrointestinal emergencies显示文摘This review focuses on the laparoscopic approach to gastrointestinal emergencies and its more recent indications. Laparoscopic surgery has a specific place in elective procedures, but that does not apply in emergency situations. In specific emergencies, there is a huge range of indications and different techniques to apply, and not all of them are equally settle. We consider that the most controversial points in minimally invasive procedures are indications in emergency situations due to technical difficulties. Some pathologies, such as oesophageal emergencies, obstruction due to colon cancer, abdominal hernias or incarcerated postsurgical hernias, are nearly always resolved by conventional surgery, that is, an open approach due to limited intraabdominal cavity space or due to the vulnerability of the bowel. These technical problems have been solved in many diseases, such as for perforated peptic ulcer or acute appendectomy for which a laparoscopic approach has become a wellknown and globally supported procedure. On the other hand, endoscopic procedures have acquired further indications, relegating surgical solutions to a second place; this happens in cholangitis or pancreatic abscess drainage. This endoluminal approach avoids the need for laparoscopic development in these diseases. Nevertheless, new instruments and new technologies could extend the laparoscopic approach to a broader array of potentials procedures. There remains, however, a long way to go. | Rosa M Jimenez Rodriguez Juan José Segura-Sampedro Mercedes Flores-Cortés Francisco López-Bernal Cristobalina Martín Verónica Pino Diaz Felipe Pareja Ciuro Javier Padillo Ruiz | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,9: | 5
Helicobacter pylori CagA protein polymorphisms and their lack of association with pathogenesis显示文摘AIM: To investigate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) CagA diversity and to evaluate the association between protein polymorphisms and the occurrence of gastric pathologies. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two clinical isolates of H. pylori cultured from gastric biopsies obtained from Colombian patients with dyspepsia were included as study material. DNA extracted from isolates was used to determine cagA status, amplifying the C-terminal cagA gene region by polymerase chain reaction. One hundred and six strains with a single amplicon were sequenced and results were used to characterize the 3' variable region of the cagA gene. To establish the number and type of tyrosine phosphorylation motifs Glutamine acid-Proline-Isoleucine-Tyrosine-Alanine (EPI-YA) bioinformatic analysis using Amino Acid Sequence Analyzer-Amino Acid Sequence Analyzer software was conducted. Analysis of the association between the number of EPIYA motifs and the gastric pathology was performed using χ2 test and analysis of the presence of EPIYA-C motifs in relation to the pathology was made by logistic regression odds ratios. Comparisons among EPIYA types found and those reported in GenBank were performed using a proportion test in Statistix Analytical Software version 8.0. RESULTS: After amplification of the 3' of the cagA gene, 106 from 122 isolates presented a single amplicon and 16 showed multiple amplicons. As expected, diversity in the size of the cagA unique fragments among isolates was observed. The 106 strains that presented a single amplicon after 3' cagA amplification came from patients with gastritis (19 patients), atrophic gastritis (21), intestinal metaplasia (26), duodenal ulcer (22) and gastric cancer. DNA sequence analysis showed that the differences in size of 3' cagA unique fragments was attributable to the number of EPIYA motifs: 1.9% had two EPIYA motifs, 62.3% had three, 33.0% had four and 2.8% had five motifs. The majority of tested clinical strains (62.3%) were found to harbor the ABC combination of EPIYA motifs and a significant statistical difference was observed between the frequencies of ABCC tyrosine phosphorylation motifs and Western strains sequences deposited in GenBank. CONCLUSION: The present report describes a lack of association between H. pylori CagA-protein polymorphisms and pathogenesis. ABCC high frequency variations compared with Western-strains sequences deposited in GenBank require more investigation. | Nicole Acosta Andrés Quiroga Pilar Delgado María Mercedes Bravo Carlos Jaramillo | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,31: | 5

All-optical motion control of metal nanoparticles powered by propulsion forces tailored in 3D trajectories显示文摘Increasing interest has been drawn to optical manipulation of metal(plasmonic)nanoparticles due to their unique response on electromagnetic radiation, prompting numerous applications in nanofabrication, photonics, sensing, etc. The familiar point-like laser tweezers rely on the exclusive use of optical confinement forces that allow stable trapping of a single metal nanoparticle in 3 D.Simultaneous all-optical(contactless)confinement and motion control of single and multiple metal nanoparticles is one of the major challenges to be overcome. This article reports and provides guidance on mastering a sophisticated manipulation technique harnessing confinement and propulsion forces, enabling simultaneous all-optical confinement and motion control of nanoparticles along 3 D trajectories. As an example, for the first time to our knowledge, programmable transport of gold and silver nanospheres with a radius of 50 and 30 nm,respectively, along 3 D trajectories tailored on demand,is experimentally demonstrated. It has been achieved by an independent design of both types of optical forces in a single-beam laser trap in the form of a reconfigurable 3 D curve. The controlled motion of multiple nanoparticles, far away from chamber walls, allows studying induced electrodynamic interactions between them, such as plasmonic coupling, observed in the presented experiments. The independent control of optical confinement and propulsion forces provides enhanced flexibility to manipulate matter with light, paving the way to new applications involving the formation, sorting, delivery, and assembling of nanostructures. | OSéARODRIGO MERCEDES ANGULO TATIANA ALIEVA | 2021 | Photonics Research2021,9,1: | 5
Lower serum expression of miR-181c-5p is associated with increased plasma levels of amyloid-beta 1-40 and cerebral vulnerability in normal aging显示文摘Background:Previous studies have shown that expression levels of miR-181c are downregulated by amyloid-β(Aβ)deposition and chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, both factors largely associated with the development of AD.Moreover, reduced 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose(FDG)-PET brain metabolism and volume loss of regions of the medial temporal lobe have been generally recognized as hallmarks of AD.Based on this evidence,we have here investigated potential associations between serum levels of miR-181c-5p and these AD signatures in asymptomatic elderly subjects.Methods:Ninety-five normal elderly subjects underwent clinical, cognitive, structural MRI,and FDG-PET explorations.Serum expression levels of miR-181c-5p and plasma Aβ concentrations were further analyzed in this cohort.Regression analyses were performed to assess associations between serum miR-181c-5p levels and cognitive functioning, plasma Aβ,structural and metabolic brain changes. Results:Decreased serum expression of miR-181c-5p was associated with increased plasma levels of Aβ1–40,deficits in cortical glucose metabolism, and volume reduction of the entorhinal cortex. No significant associations were found between lower miR-181c-5p levels and cognitive deficits or cortical thinning. Conclusions:These findings suggest that deregulation of serum miR-181c-5p may indicate cerebral vulnerability in late life. | Marta Manzano-Crespo Mercedes Atienza Jose L.Cantero | 2019 | Translational Neurodegeneration2019,8,1: | 5

Multiple myeloma mesenchymal stromal cells: Contribution to myeloma bone disease and therapeutics显示文摘Multiple myeloma is a hematological malignancy inwhich clonal plasma cells proliferate and accumulate within the bone marrow. The presence of osteolytic le-sions due to increased osteoclast(OC) activity and sup-pressed osteoblast(OB) function is characteristic of the disease. The bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs) play a critical role in multiple myeloma patho-physiology, greatly promoting the growth, survival, drug resistance and migration of myeloma cells. Here, we specifically discuss on the relative contribution of MSCs to the pathophysiology of osteolytic lesions in light of the current knowledge of the biology of my-eloma bone disease(MBD), together with the reported genomic, functional and gene expression differences between MSCs derived from myeloma patients(pMSCs) and their healthy counterparts(dMSCs). Being MSCs the progenitors of OBs, pMSCs primarily contribute to the pathogenesis of MBD because of their reduced osteogenic potential consequence of multiple OB inhibi-tory factors and direct interactions with myeloma cells in the bone marrow. Importantly, pMSCs also readily contribute to MBD by promoting OC formation and ac-tivity at various levels(i.e., increasing RANKL to OPG expression, augmenting secretion of activin A, uncou-pling ephrinB2-EphB4 signaling, and through augment-ed production of Wnt5a), thus further contributing to OB/OC uncoupling in osteolytic lesions. In this review, we also look over main signaling pathways involved in the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs and/or OB activity, highlighting amenable therapeutic targets; in parallel, the reported activity of bone-anabolic agents(at preclinical or clinical stage) targeting those signaling pathways is commented. | Antonio Garcia-Gomez Fermin Sanchez-Guijo M Consuelo del Caizo Jesus F San Miguel Mercedes Garayoa | 2014 | World Journal of Stem Cells2014,6,3: | 5
