Personal Review:Sources of sulfide in waste streams and current biotechnologies for its removal显示文摘Sulfide-containing waste streams are generated by a number of industries. It is emitted into the environment as dis- solved sulfide (S2- and HS-) in wastewaters and as H2S in waste gases. Due to its corrosive nature, biological hydrogen sulfide removal processes are being investigated to overcome the chemical and disposal costs associated with existing chemically based removal processes. The nitrogen and sulfur metabolism interacts at various levels of the wastewater treatment process. Hence, the sulfur cycle offers possibilities to integrate nitrogen removal in the treatment process, which needs to be further optimized by appropriate design of the reactor configuration, optimization of performance parameters, retention of biomass and optimization of biomass growth. The present paper reviews the biotechnological advances to remove sulfides from various environments. | MAHMOOD Qaisar ZHENG Ping CAI Jing HAYAT Yousaf HASSAN Muhammad Jaffar WU Dong-lei HU Bao-lan | 2007 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science A(Applied Physics & Engineering)2007,8,7: | 22

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography guided interventions in the management of pancreatic cancer显示文摘Pancreatic cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality with an overall five-year survival of less than 9%in the United States. At presentation, the majority of patients have painless jaundice, pruritis, and malaise,a triad that develops secondary to obstruction, which often occurs late in the course of the disease process. The technical advancements in radiological imaging and endoscopic interventions have played a crucial role in the diagnosis, staging, and management of patients with pancreatic cancer.Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)-guided diagnosis(with brush cytology, serial pancreatic juice aspiration cytologic examination technique,or biliary biopsy)and therapeutic interventions such as pancreatobiliary decompression, intraductal and relief of gastric outlet obstruction play a pivotal role in the management of advanced pancreatic cancer and are increasingly used due to improved morbidity and complication rates compared to surgical management. In this review,we highlight various ERCP-guided diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for the management of pancreatic cancer. | Muhammad Nadeem Yousaf Hamid Ehsan Ahsan Wahab Ahmad Muneeb Fizah S Chaudhary Richard Williams Christopher J Haas | 2020 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy2020,12,10: | 3
Magnetic nanoparticle-based cancer therapy显示文摘Nanoparticles(NPs) with easily modified surfaces have been playing an important role in biomedicine. As cancer is one of the major causes of death, tremendous efforts have been devoted to advance the methods of cancer diagnosis and therapy.Recently, magnetic nanoparticles(MNPs) that are responsive to a magnetic field have shown great promise in cancer therapy.Compared with traditional cancer therapy, magnetic field triggered therapeutic approaches can treat cancer in an unconventional but more effective and safer way.In this review,we will discuss the recent progress in cancer therapies based on MNPs,mainly including magnetic hyperthermia, magnetic specific targeting, magnetically controlled drug delivery, magnetofection, and magnetic switches for controlling cell fate. Some recently developed strategies such as magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) monitoring cancer therapy and magnetic tissue engineering are also addressed. | 余靓 黄冬雁 Muhammad Zubair Yousaf 侯仰龙 高松 | 2013 | Chinese Physics B2013,22,2: | 2
Diagnostically untypable hepatitis C virus variants:It is time to resolve the problem显示文摘Pakistan is a low income country with more than 10million hepatitis C virus(HCV)infections and the burden is on continuous raise.Accurate viral genotyping is very critical for proper treatment of the infected individuals as the sustained virological response of the standard antiviral interferon therapy is genotype dependent. We observed at our diagnostic center that15.6%of HCV patient’s samples were not genotypeable by using Ohno et al method. The genotyped samples showed that 3a(68.3%)is the major prevalent genotype in Pakistan followed by 2a(10.3%),3b(2.6%),1b(1.5%),2b(1.2%)and 1a(0.5%).Presence of large number of untypable HCV variants in the current study highlights an important issue of health care setup in Pakistan.Untypable HCV cases create difficulties in treatment of these patients. The problem of routine diagnostics setup of Pakistan should be addressed on priority basis to facilitate the medical professionals in patient’s treatment and to help in achieving the maximum sustained virological response. | Muhammad Sohail Afzal Muhammad Yousaf Khan Muhammad Ammar Sadia Anjum Najm us Sahar Sadaf Zaidi | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,46: | 2
A novel symmetric 10 Gbit/s architecture with a single feeder fiber for WDM-PON based on chirp-managed laser显示文摘We propose the single feeder fiber architecture for wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network(WDM-PON)based on directly modulated chirp managed laser(CML).The downlink(DL)signal output from the laser is converted to return-to-zero(RZ)differential phase shift signal using a pulse carver. The downstream signal is reused as a carrier for the upstream using intensity modulation technique.Simulation results show the error-free performance at symmetric data rate of 10 Gbit/s per channel with negligible power penalty and improved receiver sensitivity for the uplink(UL),over 25 km standard single-mode fiber(SSMF).A low-cost and reduced circuitry network design is implemented on a single feeder fiber with the elimination of differential encoder and one external modulator. | Aftab Hussain 忻向军 Abdul Latif Ashiq Hussain 余重秀 Abid Munir Yousaf Khan Muhammad Idrees Afridi | 2012 | Optoelectronics Letters2012,8,6: | 2

Dramatic response of hepatitis C patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus genotype 3 to sofosbuvirbased therapies in Punjab, Pakistan: A prospective study显示文摘AIM To prospectively evaluate the efficacy of sofobuvir(SOF) in hepatitis C patients infected with hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotype 3 in Pakistan.METHODS The present study was performed with the coordination of gastroenterology and pathology departments of Shalamar Hospital Lahore from August 2014 to May 2016. The total number of patients included in this study was 1375 and all of them were infected with HCV genotype 3. On the basis of drug combinations, all the patients were separated into two groups. The first group of patients was treated for 24 wk with SOF(Sovaldi? by Gilead Sciences) plus ribavirin(RBV) [Ribazol? by Getz Pharma Pakistan(PVT) Ltd], while the patients of the second group were treated with SOF + RBV + pegylatedinterferon(peg IFN) alfa-2 a(Ropegra by Roach) for 12 wk. HCV genotyping and viral load measurement were performed on fully automated Abbott Real-Time PCR system(Abbott m24 sp automated nucleic acid extraction system and Abbott m2000 rt amplification system; abbott Molecular, Des Plaines, IL, United States). For the assessment of sustained virological response(SVR), all HCV RNA negative patients were followed for 12weeks after the treatment completion. Any patient with less than 12 IU/m L viral load after 12 wk of treatment completion was considered as a sustained virological responder(SVR-12).RESULTS A total of 1375 patients chronically infected with HCV genotype 3 were treated with two drug combinations SOF + RBV and SOF + RBV + peg IFN alfa-2 a. On the basis of these drug combinations, patients were divided into two groups(first and second). Overall SVR-12 was excellent in both groups(99.17% and 97.91%). Older patients(> 40 years) of second group showed lower SVR-12(93.46%) compared to first group older patients(98.79%), while in the younger patients of both groups, the SVR-12 rate was almost the same(99.54% in first group and 99.05% in second group). No such difference regarding SVR-12 rate was seen in males and females of first group patients(99.68% and 98.88%, respectively), while in second group the males were found to be better responders compared to females(98.96% and 95%). The SVR-12 rate in previously treated patients of first group was better(99.34%) than second group(93.70%), while na?ve patients of second group were marginally better responders(99.25%) than first group(97.80%). Rapid viral response at week-4 was found to be a very effective predictor for assessing the SVR rate at this stage of therapy in both groups. Headache, anemia and fatigue were common side effects in both groups either treated with SOF + RBV or SOF + RBV + peg IFN alfa-2 a, while the overall percentage of the side effects was higher in second group.CONCLUSION The remarkable SVR response rate of HCV genotype 3 infected patients to SOF provided a new way to look forward to eliminate hepatitis C from our region. | Sajjad Iqbal Muhammad Haroon Yousuf Muhammad Iftikhar Yousaf | 2017 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,44: | 2
Effect of Zn doping on electronic structure and optical properties zincblende GaN(A DFT+U insight)显示文摘The development of new materials, having exceptional properties in comparison to existing materials is highly required for bringing advancement in electronic and optoelectronic technologies.Keeping this fact,we investigated structural, electronic, and optical properties of zincblende GaN doped with selected Zn concentrations(6.25%,12.50%,and 18.70%),using the first-principle calculations based on density functional theory with GGA+U.We conducted the entire study using the WIEN2K code.In this study,we calculated various significant parametric quantities such as cohesive energies, formation energies, bulk moduli, and lattice constants along with the study of optical and electronic properties by substituting Ga atoms with Zn atoms in 1×2×2 supercell. The structural stability is confirmed by studying the phonon dispersion curves which suggest that Zn:GaN material is stable against the 6.25%and 18.70%Zn concentrations while for 12.50%,it shows instability. The Hubbard values U=0,2,4,6 eV were added to GGA and the electronic properties were improved with the U=6 eV.Optical absorption was blue shifted while the refractive index and dielectric constant were increased with increasing the Zn concentrations.Electronic properties are enhanced due to the prime contribution of cations(Zn)3ri states. The optical and electronic properties are further discussed in detail in the entire study. | Muhammad Junaid Iqbal Khan Zarfishan Kanwal Masood Yousaf Hamid Ullah Javed Ahmad Abid Latif Yong-Han Shin Ata Ur Rahman Khalid | 2021 | Communications in Theoretical Physics2021,73,3: | 1
Prediction of Anoxic Sulfide Biooxidation Under Various HRTs Using Artificial Neural Networks显示文摘Objective During present investigation the data of a laboratory-scale anoxic sulfide oxidizing (ASO) reactor were used in a neural network system to predict its performance. Methods Five uncorrelated components of the influent wastewater were used as the artificial neural network model input to predict the output of the effluent using back-propagation and general regression algorithms. The best prediction performance is achieved when the data are preprocessed using principal components analysis (PCA) before they are fed to a back propagated neural network. Results Within the range of experimental conditions tested, it was concluded that the ANN model gave predictable results for nitrite removal from wastewater through ASO process. The model did not predict the formation of sulfate to an acceptable manner. Conclusion Apart from experimentation, ANN model can help to simulate the results of such experiments in finding the best optimal choice for ASO based denitrification. Together with wastewater collection and the use of improved treatment systems and new technologies, better control of wastewater treatment plant (WTP) can lead to more effective maneuvers by its operators and, as a consequence, better effluent quality. | QAISAR MAHMOOD PING ZHENG DONG-LEI WU XU-SHENG WANG HAYAT YOUSAF EJAZ UL-ISLAM MUHAMMAD JAFFAR HASSAN GHULAM JILANI MUHAMMAD RASHID AZIM | 2007 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2007,20,5: | 1
Scenario of dengue infection & its control in Pakistan: An up-date and way forward显示文摘Dengue fever is one of the major health problems in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. The causative agent of dengue fever is the dengue virus which is an enveloped single stranded RNA virus belongs to the family Flaviviridae and has five distinct serotypes(DENV-1,DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4 and DENV-5). Dengue virus is transmitted to human via bite of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. The clinical symptoms of dengue fever ranging from mild to severe form as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Pakistan is dengue endemic since 1994 but from 2006, Pakistan faced the worst condition regarding dengue in which thousands of people affected by the disease and hundreds of people lost their lives. DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-1 are the prevalent serotypes in Pakistan. Common diagnostic techniques are being used in Pakistan such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, polymerase chain reaction and rapid diagnostic tests, while differential diagnosis, limitations of diagnostic methods and poor health care system are the real challenges in dengue diagnosis.Favorable climatic conditions, unplanned urbanization, travelling etc., are major factors responsible for dengue epidemics in Pakistan. This presentation provides update about dengue circumstances in Pakistan and also describes the way how to improve dengue situation in Pakistan. | Muhammad Zubair Yousaf Adeena Siddique Usman Ali Ashfaq Muhammad Ali | 2018 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2018,11,1: | 1
Selection of suitable site in Pakistan for wind power plant installation using analytic hierarchy process(AHP)显示文摘Rise in environmental pollution is a critical problem faced by mankind today. Many interventions have been made to reduce the carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases.Interventions, such as the introduction of electric cars, and innovative techniques to harness energy from renewable sources have been implemented.Pakistan is also very focused on exploiting its renewable energy sources and many sources have been identified.Wind energy is considered to have a promising potential and numerous sites have been identified for installation of wind farms. In this paper,we have collected data for the sites with the capacity factor(key determinant of value of power plant)of 25%or above for 600 kW wind turbine and applied Multi-Criteria Decision Method to find the most suitable to least suitable site for the installation of wind farm with respect to different factors/criteria.Analytic Hierarchy Process is used to evaluate four potential sites based on the criteria of wind speed(m/s),wind power density(W/m^(2)),distance from grid station(km),capacity factor, transport cost and population density. Results show that the preference of site largely depends on the average annual wind speed and wind power density. Our study is helpful for government as they verify the findings of Pakistan Meteorological Department but with different approach. | Yousaf Ali Masab Butt Muhammad sabir Ubaidullah Mumtaz Aneel Salman | 2018 | Journal of Control and Decision2018,5,2: | 1
Emerging Metal Single-Atom Materials:From Fundamentals to Energy Applications显示文摘CONSPECTUS:With the development of nanotechnology and characterization techniques,it has been realized that the reactivity of metal nanoparticles mainly depends on some unsaturated coordination atoms on the surface. However, only a small fraction of the surface exposed atoms can access the reactants and act as reactive sites, resulting in low utilization of metal atoms. Moreover, due to the complex structure of metal nanoparticles, the metal atoms exposed on the surface are likely to be in different chemical environments and may act as multiple active centers to catalyze the reactants, which brings great difficulties in the establishment of the structure−activity relationship of metal nanoparticles. | Yiju Li Yin Zhou Changshuai Shang Muhammad Yousaf Ziqi Guo Shaojun Guo | 2022 | Accounts of Materials Research2022,3,11: | 1

Role of sterile inflammation in fatty liver diseases显示文摘Sterile inflammation is a ubiquitous response of tissues to stress and injury, and occurs to a high degree in the liver. This results in high levels of tissue damage after development of the metabolic syndrome, and with alcohol excess.Inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin(IL)-1βare key in the initiation and propagation of inflammation and tissue damage.IL-1βis activated by a cytosolic machinery collectively termed the inflammasome, and by proteases released by neutrophils. Most of the inflammatory response is driven by macrophages, but hepatocytes, stellate and sinusoidal endothelial cells also have key roles.Hepatocytes for example release acute phase reactants which have pro-and anti-inflammatory effects, and are also a major source of pro-inflammatory damage associated molecules.Stellate cells can regulate differentiation of regulatory T cells by the production of transforming growth factor(TGF)βand all-trans retinoic acid, but the overall effect seems to be context dependent. The strong hepatic inflammatory response is regulated in many ways, with epigenetic regulation playing a major role. This is seen most notably with the rapid development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)in pups of female mice kept on a high fat diet prior to conception, but is likely occurring in adults that have been under metabolic stress for extended periods of time.Epigenetic regulation is of key importance due to its clinical implications, and potential to reveal new pathways for liver inflammation. | Yonglin Chen Muhammad Nadeem Yousaf Wajahat Z.Mehal | 2018 | Liver Research2018,2,1: | 1
