Enhanced secondary pollution offset reduction of primary emissions during COVID-19 lockdown in China显示文摘To control the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus(COVID-19),China imposed nationwide restrictions on the movement of its population(lockdown)after the Chinese New Year of 2020,leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions.Despite such large decreases in primary pollution, there were nonetheless several periods of heavy haze pollution in eastern China, raising questions about the well-established relationship between human activities and air quality. Here, using comprehensive measurements and modeling,we show that the haze during the COVID lockdown was driven by enhancements of secondary pollution. In particular, large decreases in NOx emissions from transportation increased ozone and nighttime NO_(3)radical formation, and these increases in atmospheric oxidizing capacity in turn facilitated the formation of secondary particulate matter. Our results, afforded by the tragic natural experiment of the COVID-19 pandemic, indicate that haze mitigation depends upon a coordinated and balanced strategy for controlling multiple pollutants. | Xin Huang Aijun Ding Jian Gao Bo Zheng Derong Zhou Ximeng Qi Rong Tang Jiaping Wang Chuanhua Ren Wei Nie Xuguang Chi Zheng Xu Liangduo Chen Yuanyuan Li Fei Che Nini Pang Haikun Wang Dan Tong Wei Qin Wei Cheng Weijing Liu Qingyan Fu Baoxian Liu Fahe Chai Steven JDavis Qiang Zhang Kebin He | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,2: | 47
A precise tidal prediction mechanism based on the combination of harmonic analysis and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system model显示文摘An efficient and accurate prediction of a precise tidal level in estuaries and coastal areas is indispensable for the management and decision-making of human activity in the field wok of marine engineering. The variation of the tidal level is a time-varying process. The time-varying factors including interference from the external environment that cause the change of tides are fairly complicated. Furthermore, tidal variations are affected not only by periodic movement of celestial bodies but also by time-varying interference from the external environment. Consequently, for the efficient and precise tidal level prediction, a neuro-fuzzy hybrid technology based on the combination of harmonic analysis and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)model is utilized to construct a precise tidal level prediction system, which takes both advantages of the harmonic analysis method and the ANFIS network. The proposed prediction model is composed of two modules: the astronomical tide module caused by celestial bodies' movement and the non-astronomical tide module caused by various meteorological and other environmental factors. To generate a fuzzy inference system(FIS) structure, three approaches which include grid partition(GP), fuzzy c-means(FCM) and sub-clustering(SC) are used in the ANFIS network constructing process. Furthermore, to obtain the optimal ANFIS based prediction model, large numbers of simulation experiments are implemented for each FIS generating approach. In this tidal prediction study, the optimal ANFIS model is used to predict the non-astronomical tide module, while the conventional harmonic analysis model is used to predict the astronomical tide module. The final prediction result is performed by combining the estimation outputs of the harmonious analysis model and the optimal ANFIS model. To demonstrate the applicability and capability of the proposed novel prediction model, measured tidal level samples of Fort Pulaski tidal station are selected as the testing database. Simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed prediction approach can achieve precise predictions for the tidal level with high accuracy, satisfactory convergence and stability. | ZHANG Zeguo YIN Jianchuan WANG Nini HU Jiangqiang WANG Ning | 2017 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2017,36,11: | 6
Atrial fibrillatory signal estimation using blind source extraction algorithm based on high-order statistics显示文摘The analysis and the characterization of atrial fibrillation (AF) requires,in a previ-ous key step, the extraction of the atrial activity (AA) free from 12-lead electrocar-diogram (ECG). This contribution proposes a novel non-invasive approach for the AA estimation in AF episodes. The method is based on blind source extraction (BSE) using high order statistics (HOS). The validity and performance of this algo-rithm are confirmed by extensive computer simulations and experiments on real-world data. In contrast to blind source separation (BSS) methods,BSE only extract one desired signal, and it is easy for the machine to judge whether the extracted signal is AA source by calculating its spectrum concentration, while it is hard for the machine using BSS method to judge which one of the separated twelve signals is AA source. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to have great potential in clinical monitoring. | WANG Gang RAO NiNi ZHANG Ying | 2008 | Science in China(Series F)2008,51,10: | 6
Distribution and relationship between antimicrobial resistance genes and heavy metals in surface sediments of Taihu Lake,China显示文摘Heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and other wastes released into the environment can significantly influence environmental antibiotic resistance. We investigated the occurrence of 22 antimicrobial resistance genes(ARGs) and 10 heavy metal concentrations, and the relationship between ARGs and heavy metals in surface sediment from seven sites of Lake Taihu. The results showed significant correlations(p < 0.05) between sediment ARG levels, especially for tetracycline and sulfonamides(e.g., tet(A), tet(D), tet(E), tet(O), sul1, sul2 and int-1) and specific heavy metals(Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Zn, among others) in the Lake. In the surface sediments, heavy metals showed an interaction with resistance genes, but the strength of interaction was diminished with increasing depth. For most of the heavy metals, the concentration of elements in the top sediments was higher than that in other depths.Tetracycline resistance genes(tet(A), tet(B), tet(D), tet(E) and tet(O), β-lactam resistance genes(SHV, TEM, CTX, OXA and OXY) and sulfonamide resistance genes(sulA, sul1, sul2, sul3 and int-1) were detected. They showed a trend which inferred a statistically significant increase followed by decreases in the relative abundance of these ARGs(normalized to 16 S rRNA genes) with increasing depth. This study revealed that tet(A), tet(O), TEM, OXY, int-1, sul1 and sul3 were widespread in surface sediments with high abundance, indicating that these genes deserve more attention in future work. | Okugbe E.Ohore Felix Gyawu Addo Songhe Zhang Nini Han Kwaku Anim-Larbi | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,3: | 5
Modes of genetic adaptations underlying functional innovations in the rumen显示文摘The rumen is the hallmark organ of ruminants and hosts a diverse ecosystem of microorganisms that facilitates efficient digestion of plant fibers. We analyzed 897 transcriptomes from three Cetartiodactyla lineages:ruminants, camels and cetaceans,as well as data from ruminant comparative genomics and functional assays to explore the genetic basis of rumen functional innovations. We identified genes with relatively high expression in the rumen,of which many appeared to be recruited from other tissues. These genes show functional enrichment in ketone body metabolism, regulation of microbial community, and epithelium absorption, which are the most prominent biological processes involved in rumen innovations.Several modes of genetic change underlying rumen functional innovations were uncovered, including coding mutations, genes newly evolved, and changes of regulatory elements. We validated that the key ketogenesis rate-limiting gene(HMGCS2)with five ruminant-specific mutations was under positive selection and exhibits higher synthesis activity than those of other mammals. Two newly evolved genes(LYZ1 and DEFB1)are resistant to Gram-positive bacteria and thereby may regulate microbial community equilibrium.Furthermore,we confirmed that the changes of regulatory elements accounted for the majority of rumen gene recruitment. These results greatly improve our understanding of rumen evolution and organ evo-devo in general. | Xiangyu Pan Yudong Cai Zongjun Li Xianqing Chen Rasmus Heller Nini Wang Yu Wang Chen Zhao Yong Wang Han Xu Songhai Li Ming Li Cunyuan Li Shengwei Hu Hui Li Kun Wang Lei Chen Bin Wei Zhuqing Zheng Weiwei Fu Yue Yang Tingting Zhang Zhuoting Hou Yueyang Yan Xiaoyang Lv Wei Sun Xinyu Li Shisheng Huang Lixiang Liu Shengyong Mao Wenqing Liu Jinlian Hua Zhipeng Li Guojie Zhang Yulin Chen Xihong Wang Qiang Qiu Brian PDalrymple Wen Wang Yu Jiang | 2021 | Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,1: | 3

Novel flavin-containing monooxygenase protein FMO1 interacts with CAT2 to negatively regulate drought tolerance through ROS homeostasis and ABA signaling pathway in tomato显示文摘Drought stress is themajor abiotic factor that can seriously affect plant growth and crop production. The functions of flavin-containing monooxygenases(FMOs)are known in animals. They addmolecular oxygen to lipophilic compounds or produce reactive oxygen species(ROS).However, little information on FMOs in plants is available. Here,we characterized a tomato drought-responsive gene that showed homology to FMO,and it was designated as FMO1.FMO1 was downregulated promptly by drought and ABA treatments.Transgenic functional analysis indicated that RNAi suppression of the expression of FMO1(FMO1-Ri)improved drought tolerance relative to wild-type(WT)plants,whereas overexpression of FMO1(FMO1-OE)reduced drought tolerance. The FMO1-Ri plants exhibited lower ABA accumulation, higher levels of antioxidant enzyme activities, and less ROS generation comparedwith theWTand FMO1-OE plants under drought stress.RNA-seq transcriptional analysis revealed the differential expression levels of many drought-responsive genes thatwere co-expressed with FMO1,including PP2Cs,PYLs,WRKY,and LEA.Using Y2H screening,we found that FMO1 physically interacted with catalase 2(CAT2),which is an antioxidant enzyme and confers drought resistance. Our findings suggest that tomato FMO1 negatively regulates tomato drought tolerance in the ABA-dependent pathway and modulates ROS homeostasis by directly binding to SlCAT2. | Lulu Wang Yinlian Zhou Yin Ding Chunrui Chen Xueting Chen Nini Su Xingguo Zhang Yu Pan Jinhua Li | 2023 | Horticulture Research2023,10,4: | 0
CNEReg Interprets Ruminant-specific Conserved Non-coding Elements by Developmental Gene Regulatory Network显示文摘The genetic information coded in DNA leads to trait innovation via a gene regulatory network(GRN)in development. Here,we developed a conserved non-coding element interpretation method to integrate multi-omics data into gene regulatory network(CNEReg)to investigate the ruminant multi-chambered stomach innovation. We generated paired expression and chromatin accessibility data during rumen and esophagus development in sheep, and revealed 1601 active ruminantspecific conserved non-coding elements(active-RSCNEs).To interpret the function of these activeRSCNEs,we defined toolkit transcription factors(TTFs)and modeled their regulation on rumenspecific genes via batteries of active-RSCNEs during development. Our developmental GRN revealed 18 TTFs and 313 active-RSCNEs regulating 7 rumen functional modules.Notably,6 TTFs(OTX1,SOX21,HOXC8,SOX2,TP63,and PPARG),as well as 16 active-RSCNEs,functionally distinguished the rumen from the esophagus. Our study provides a systematic approach to understanding how gene regulation evolves and shapes complex traits by putting evo-devo concepts into practice with developmental multi-omics data. | Xiangyu Pan Zhaoxia Ma Xinqi Sun Hui Li Tingting Zhang Chen Zhao Nini Wang Rasmus Heller Wing Hung Wong Wen Wang Yu Jiang Yong Wang | 2023 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2023,21,3: | 0
Insights into the intrinsic interaction between series of C1 molecules and surface of NiO oxygen carriers involved in chemical looping processes显示文摘Understanding and modulating the interaction between various reactive molecules and oxygen carriers are the key issue to achieve process intensification of chemical looping technology.C1 chemical molecules play an important role in many reactions involved with chemical looping processes. However,up to now, there is still a lack of systematic and in-depth understanding of the adsorption mechanism of C1 molecules on the surface of oxygen carriers(OCs).In this work, the intrinsic interaction between a series of C1 molecules composed of CH4,CO,CO2,CH3OH,HCHO and HCOOH and surface of Ni O OCs in the chemical looping process have been studied using density functional theory calculations.Various adsorption configurations of C1 molecules and also different adsorption sites of Ni O have been considered. The structural features of stable configuration of C1 molecules on the surface of NiO OCs have been obtained.Further, the interacted sites, types and strengths of C1 molecules on the surface of NiO have been directly pictured by the independent gradient model methods. Also, the nature of the interaction between C1 molecule and Ni O surface has been investigated with the aid of energy decomposition analysis from a quantitative view. | Jinpeng Zhang Hongfeng Gao Nini Yuan QiangWang YuhuaWu Yanli Sun Hongcun Bai | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2020,28,11: | 0
Extracellular signal regulated kinase 5 promotes cell migration, invasion and lung metastasis in a FAK-dependent manner显示文摘This study was designed to evaluate ERK5 expression in lung cancer and malignant melanoma progression and to ascertain the involvement of ERK5 signaling in lung cancer and melanoma. We show that ERK5 expression is abundant in human lung cancer samples, and elevated ERK5 expression in lung cancer was linked to the acquisition of increased metastatic and invasive potential.Importantly,we observed a significant correlation between ERK5 activity and FAK expression and its phosphorylation at the Ser910 site.Mechanistically,ERK5 increased the expression of the transcription factor USF1,which could transcriptionally upregulate FAK expression, resulting in FAK signaling activation to promote cell migration. We also provided evidence that the phosphorylation of FAK at Ser910 was due to ERK5 but not ERK1/2,and we then suggested a role for Ser910 in the control of cell motility. In addition,ERK5 had targets in addition to FAK that regulate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and cell motility in cancer cells.Taken together, our findings uncover a cancer metastasis-promoting role for ERK5 and provide the rationale for targeting ERK5 as a potential therapeutic approach. | Weiwei Jiang Fangfang Cai Huangru Xu Yanyan Lu Jia Chen Jia Liu Nini Cao Xiangyu Zhang Xiao Chen Qitai Huang Hongqin Zhuang Zi-Chun Hua | 2020 | Protein & Cell2020,11,11: | 0

Transferral of HMs pollution from road-deposited sediments to stormwater runoff during transport processes显示文摘Stormwater runoff derived from the wash-off of road-deposited sediments (RDS), contains elevated heavy metal (HM) concentrations and, thus, imposes an increasing threat to urban aquatic ecosystems. In-depth understanding of the variations of HMs pollution from RDS to stormwater during transport processes facilitates the development of effective RDS and stormwater control strategies. Toward this end, the distribution of HMs (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Ni) in RDS and stormwater were investigated simultaneously. The results show a preferential accumulation of Pb and Zn in the finer (< 38.5μm) RDS, and Cu, Cr and Ni in the coarser (38.5-150μm) RDS. For stormwater, n.d.~48.6% of HMs fractionated into the dissolved phase, and stormwater particles constitute the primary carriers of HMs. Furthennore, the accumulation of HMs in stormwater particles increased linearly with finer particle size distributions (PSD). Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) highlighted the predominant pollution of both RDS and stormwater particles by Cu, Pb and Zn. Nonetheless, Cu, Pb, and Ni mostly contributed the potential ecological risk of RDS, whereas Cu, Pb, and Zn mainly contributed that of stormwater particles. Moreover, contamination by Cu, Pb and Zn was significantly higher in stormwater particles than that in RDS. These differences are attributable to the solubility and size-dependent accumulation of HMs in RDS, as well as the PSD variations during transport processes. The study outcomes highlight the importance of very fine (nano- and submicron- scale) RDS in stormwater pollution and the necessity of control. | Qian Wang Qionghua Zhang Mawuli Dzakpasu Nini Chang Xiaochang Wang | 2019 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2019,13,1: | 0
Genotypic Diversity Affects Age Structure of Tiller and Rhizome of Leymus chinensis Population,But Not Age Structure of Bud显示文摘The effect of genotypic diversity on the age structure and bud bank of the Leymus chinensis population has not yet been demonstrated. This experiment was designed to study the age structure of the tiller, rhizome, and bud of L.chinensis at genotypic diversity levels of 1,2,4,8,and 12.A total of 64 communities were established in this experiment, following the principle of randomized block experimental design. The results indicated that genotypic diversity had a significant or obviously significant effect on the cumulative length of rhizomes of 2a and 4a,dry matter accumulation of rhizomes of 1a and 2a,tiller number of 1a,tiller productivity of 3a,but had no significant effect age structure of buds.As the levels of genotypic diversity increased, the proportion of the cumulative length of rhizomes with 4a decreased and then increased, and dry matter accumulation of rhizomes with 1a and 2a gradually increased while the number of tillers with 1a gradually decreased, when the gradient of genotypic diversity increased. At the 1,2,4,8,and 12 genotype diversity levels, the number of tillers, the cumulative length of rhizomes, and dry matter accumulation in rhizomes and buds were all age structures of expanding type. However, tiller productivity was an expanding or stable age structure at levels of 1,2,4,8 genotypic diversity, while it was a declining age structure at the 12 genotype diversity gradient. An appropriate genotypic diversity is conducive to maintaining the growth and stability of the age structure of L.chinensis population, but too high a gradient of genotypic diversity can have a negative impact on the population age structure. This study provided that an appropriate number of genotypic diversity contributes to the stability of the population. | Chan Zhou Nini Xie Wenjun Rong Zhuo Zhang Linyou Lv Zhengwen Wang | 2023 | Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,11: | 0
