1Geographical distribution of red and green Noctiluca scintillans显示文摘The dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans is one of the most important and abundant red tide organisms and it is distributed world-wide. It occurs in two forms. Red Noctiluca is heterotrophic and fills the role of one of the microzooplankton grazers in the foodweb. In contrast, green Noctiluca contains a photosynthetic symbiont Pedinomonas noctilucae (a prasinophyte), but it also feeds on other plankton when the food supply is abundant. In this review, we document the global distribution of these two forms and include the first maps of their global distribution. Red Noctiluca occurs widely in the temperate to sub-tropical coastal regions of the world. It occurs over a wide temperature range of about 10°C to 25°C and at higher salinities (generally not in estuaries). It is particularly abundant in high productivity areas such as upwelling or eutrophic areas where diatoms dominate since they are its preferred food source. Green Noctiluca is much more restricted to a temperature range of 25°C-30°C and mainly occurs in tropical waters of Southeast Asia, Bay of Bengal (east coast of India), in the eastern, western and northern Arabian Sea, the Red Sea, and recently it has become very abundant in the Gulf of Oman. Red and green Noctiluca do overlap in their distribution in the eastern, northern and western Arabian Sea with a seasonal shift from green Noctiluca in the cooler winter convective mixing, higher productivity season, to red Noctiluca in the more oligotrophic warmer summer season.P. 2Chemopreventive and Growth Inhibitory Effects of Selenium显示文摘There is very convincing evidence that a high dietary level of selenium substantially reduces the incidence of a wide variety of animal cancers. The human epidemiological evidence is less clear cut, but overall suggests that selenium may be protective: the evidence is strongest in men in relation to gastro-intestinal cancers. There is evidence that dietary selenium compounds reduce the formation of DNA adducts by carcinogens. Selenium compounds also inhibit growth in vitro and induce apoptosis. In general, there is a good correlation between the effectiveness of selenium compounds in chemoprevention and growth inhibition, implying that the mechanisms of growth inhibition and chemoprevention may be similar and that a major factor in the chemopreventive effects of selenium compounds in vivo is their ability to retard outgrowth of pre-malignant cells. Various hypotheses have been advanced as to how selenium compounds might prevent tumour cellgrowth. One is that they cause apoptosis by inducing oxidative stress. However, we have shown that the most potent selenium compound, selenodiglutathione (SDG), a natural metabolite of selenite, does not induce oxidative stress, at least not in the sarne way as other oxidants such as H2O2 and diamide. Firstly, a partially selenium-resistant variant cell line does not show increased resistance to H2O2. Moreover, SDG does not induce widespread tyrosine phosphorylation, including MAP and SAN kinases, like other oxidants such as H2O2 and diamide and its effects are not reversed by pretreatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, herbimycin. 3Phosphate limitation of phytoplankton growth in the Changjiang Estuary显示文摘Laboratory experiments of bioassay with Pltaeodaetytum tricornutum, Chatoceros didymus, Chaetoreros calcitraus and Heterogtoea sp. sampled from the Changjiang Estuary in spring and summer, 1986, indicated that both N and P limit phytoplankton growth in the medium with N : P ranged between 8-30, and N limits phytoplankton production in the medium with N: P<8, while P is the limitary nutrient in the N : P>30. Generally, N : P in the Changjiang Estuary waters is 2 times higher than Redfield ratio. The bioassay experiments with high N : P water samples collected from Changjiang Estuary show that phytoplankton production is limited by P. 4全新世初期气候的数值模拟研究显示文摘本文尝试用一个完全耦合的大气-海洋-植被模式(Atmosphere-Ocean-Vegetation General Circulation Model,AOVGCM)模拟全新世初期的地球气候.模拟结果表明,耦合模式成功地再现了全新世初期复杂气候条件下的基本特征,为研究这一时期的气候状况提供了重要的模型支持.就全球平均而言,11ka BP冬季地表气温比现代约低1.6 K,夏季比现代低约0.3 K;大气温度从低层到高层有不同的表现,高层反映了太阳辐射的重要作用,而低层气候对下垫面(如冰川、植被和海洋等)的影响比较敏感.从区域分布来看,11 ka BP冬季大部地区比现在偏干,但热带太平洋和南半球少部地区降水偏多;夏季大部地区比现在偏湿,亚洲和非洲季风偏强,主要的季风区降水偏多.刘艳 孙颖 S. 7Far-infrared absorption studies of Be acceptors in δ-doped GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells显示文摘We report a far-infrared absorption study of internal transitions of shallow Be acceptors in both bulk GaAs and a series of δ-doped GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well samples with well thicknesses of 20,15 and 10 nm. Low temperature far-infrared absorp-tion measurements clearly show three principal absorption lines due to transitions of Be-acceptor states from the ground state to the first three odd-parity excited states,respec-tively. Using a variational principle,the 2p-1s transition energies of quantum confined Be acceptors are calculated as a function of the well width.
