A journey to understand wheat Fusarium head blight resistance in the Chinese wheat landrace Wangshuibai显示文摘Fusarium head blight(FHB) or scab caused by Fusarium graminearum is a major threat to wheat production in China as well as in the world. To combat this disease, multiple efforts have been carried out internationally. In this article, we review our long-time effort in identifying the resistance genes and dissecting the resistance mechanisms by both forward and reverse genetics approaches in the last two decades. We present recent progress in resistance QTL identification, candidate functional gene discovery, marker-assisted improvement of FHB resistant varieties, and findings in investigating association of signal molecules, such as Ca^(++),SA, JA, and ET, with FHB response, with the assistance from rapidly growing genomics platforms. The information will be helpful for designing novel and efficient approaches to curb FHB. | Haiyan Jia Jiyang Zhou Shulin Xue Guoqiang Li Haisheng Yan Congfu Ran Yiduo Zhang Jinxing Shi Li Jia Xin Wang Jing Luo Zhengqiang Ma | 2018 | The Crop Journal2018,6,1: | 24
Impact of Long-Term Atrazine Use on Groundwater Safety in Jilin Province, China显示文摘The long-lasting application of representative herbicide atrazine (ATR) has given rise to the accumulation of its residues in the groundwater. To investigate the impact of long-term ATR use on groundwater safety, the residues of ATR and its metabolites, desethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA) and hydroxyatrazine (HA) were monitored in groundwater and top soil at the major corn growing region of Qian'an and Gongzhuling in Jilin Province, China. The residues of the target compounds were analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. The limits of detection (LODs) of ATR, DEA, DIA, and HA were 0.5, 0.5, 5, and 0.5 ng L-1 in groundwater and 0.33, 0.33, 3.3, and 0.33 μg kg-1 in soil. The target compounds were found in 94% of groundwater samples and 100% of soil samples. The compounds detected most frequently in groundwater were ATR (89%), DEA (64%) and HA (17%), whereas in soil were ATR (97%), DEA (36%) and HA (97%). DIA was not detected in any determined groundwater and soil sample. Average residues were 106.8 ng L-1 for ATR, 0.9 ng L-1 for DEA and 0.3 ng L-1 for HA in groundwater, whereas 11.1 μg kg-1 for ATR, 0.4 μg kg-1 for DEA and 7.8 μg kg-1 for HA in soil. ATR residues detected in groundwater samples were below standards for drinking water quality (GB5749-2006, 2 μg L-1), while the total residues of ATR and its chloro-s-triazine metabolites (DEA and DIA) were below current WHO (World Health Organization) guideline value (GV, 0.1 mg L-1). In addition, concentrations of HA in groundwater were determined below current WHO GV (0.2 mg L-1). The results indicated that ATR is safe to be used in Jilin Province under the current application scheme. However, total residues of ATR and DEA were detected in nearly all wells, thus, it is necessary to pay attention on groundwater monitoring for ATR and its metabolites. | GENG Yue MA Jing JIA Ran XUE Li-qin TAO Chuan-jiang LI Chong-jiu MA Xiao-dong LIN Yan | 2013 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,2: | 13
Novel Prognostic Models for Predicting the 180-day Outcome for Patients with Hepatitis-B Virus-related Acute-on-chronic Liver Failure显示文摘Background and Aims:It remains difficult to forecast the 180-day prognosis of patients with hepatitis B virus-acuteon-chronic liver failure(HBV-ACLF)using existing prognostic models. The present study aimed to derive novel-innovative models to enhance the predictive effectiveness of the 180-day mortality in HBV-ACLF.Methods:The present cohort study examined 171 HBV-ACLF patients(non-survivors,n=62;survivors,n=109).The 27 retrospectively collected parameters included the basic demographic characteristics, clinical comorbidities, and laboratory values.Backward stepwise logistic regression(LR)and the classification and regression tree(CART)analysis were used to derive two predictive models.Meanwhile,a nomogram was created based on the LR analysis. The accuracy of the LR and CART model was detected through the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC),compared with model of end-stage liver disease(MELD)scores. Results:Among 171 HBV-ACLF patients, the mean age was 45.17 years-old,and 11.7%of the patients were female. The LR model was constructed with six independent factors, which included age, total bilirubin, prothrombin activity, lymphocytes, monocytes and hepatic encephalopathy. The following seven variables were the prognostic factors for HBV-ACLF in the CART model:age, total bilirubin, prothrombin time, lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and blood urea nitrogen. The AUROC for the CART model(0.878)was similar to that for the LR model(0.878,p=0.898),and this exceeded that for the MELD scores(0.728,p<0.0001).Conclusions:The LR and CART model are both superior to the MELD scores in predicting the 180-day mortality of patients with HBV-ACLF.Both the LR and CART model can be used as medical decision-making tools by clinicians. | Ran Xue Jun Yang Jing Wu Zhongying Wang Qinghua Meng | 2021 | Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology2021,9,4: | 8
Theranostical application of nanomedicine for treating central nervous system disorders显示文摘The primary reason for the failure of traditional medicine in treating the disorders of the central nervous system(CNS) is the obstruction to traverse the blood-brain barrier(BBB). Due to the unique physiochemical properties of nanoparticles, they can preferably help deliver drugs passing through the BBB. Researchers have been investigating the capacity of multifunctional nanomaterials as theranostical agents. However, some of the studies have reported controversial results, which might be due to different schematic designs, including size, surface charge, and shape. This review summarizes the applications of nanoparticles to overcome the BBB or contribute to improving the diagnostic and therapeutic effects in CNS diseases. | Wang Ran Xue Xue | 2018 | Science China(Life Sciences)2018,61,4: | 6
Effects of nociceptin/orphanin FQ on rats with cathartic colon显示文摘AIM: To demonstrate the change and effect of nociceptin/orphanin FQ in the colon of rats with cathartic colon. METHODS: The cathartic colon model was established by feeding rats rhubarb for 3 mo, the changes of colonic electromyography were investigated by both suspension muscle strips test and serosal recordings of colonic myoelectrical activity. Immunohistochemical staining (S-P methods) and image analysis were used to determine the changes of nociceptin/orphanin FQ in the proximal colon and distal colon of rats with cathartic colon. RESULTS: Suspension muscle strips test in vitro showed OFQ (10-9-10-6 mol/L) concentration dependently caused an immediate tonic contraction in the isolated colon. But the increase of tension in cathartic colon was less than control groups (P < 0.01). Intravenous administration of OFQ (1 μg/kg) caused phasic contractions in the proximal colon, while the amplitude of phasic contractions caused by OFQ in cathartic colon was much lower than that in the control groups (2.58 ± 0.41 vs 4.16 ± 0.53, t = -2.6, P = 0.012). OFQ was highly expressed in the myenteric plexus of the rat colon but not in the muscle cells. The immunoreactivity of OFQ in the proximal colon in cathartic colon rats decreased significantly compared with the control group (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Colonic smooth muscle of cathartic colon showed low sensitivity to the stimulation of OFQ, suggesting that it might be caused by the abnormal distribution of OFQ or the abnormalities of receptors, leading to the disorganization of dynamic and incoordinated contractions. | Hai-Yan Li Xiang Yan Quan-Lai Xue Yong-Ning Zhou Yan Gao Rui Wang Yong-Ming Liu Jun-Tao Ran | 2007 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,1: | 5

Factors influencing the natural regeneration of arrow bamboo in giant panda habitat of the north Minshan Mountains, southwestern China显示文摘To determine the effects of eco-factors on the regeneration of arrow bamboo in giant panda habitat,a field study was conducted in the Baozuo and Gonggangling Nature Reserves,Sichuan Province,China.A total of 183 quadrats(10 m×10 m) and 717 small quadrats(1 m×1 m) were investigated within the study site.Bamboo seedling density was used as an indicator of natural regeneration.Twelve factors were measured, which included topography and forest factors(elevation, slope aspect, slope degree, slope position, canopy cover, and shrub cover) and microhabitat factors(upper vegetation cover, herb cover, litter layer cover, moss cover, moss thickness, and dead bamboo density).A One-Way ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of topography and forest factors on seedling density, and a GLM(Generalized Linear Model) procedure was performed to examine the relationship between seedling density and microhabitat factors. The results indicated that elevation and canopy cover had highly significant effects on seedling density:bamboo seedling density was highest and showed the best regeneration at middle elevations(2800-3000 m) and under medium to medium-high canopy cover.Moss thickness, moss cover, and dead bamboo density were the most important microhabitat factors influencing the natural regeneration of bamboo:seedling density increased with increasing moss cover and moss thickness and decreased with increasing dead bamboo density. We propose that removal of dead bamboo and controlling grazing activities may accelerate the process of bamboo regeneration. | LI Bo ZHANG Man ZHONG Xue MOERMOND Timothy RAN JiangHong YANG XuYu | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17: | 4
The energy performance and passive survivability of high thermal insulation buildings in future climate scenarios显示文摘Given that the passive performance simulation of buildings based on typical meteorological year data and specific design schemes makes it challenging to respond to climate change and refine design requirements on time, this article established a passive performance prediction model for future buildings considering multi-dimensional variables including climate change, building design, and operational characteristics. For high thermal insulation buildings under future climates, the mild climate zone is more sensitive than the others, cooling energy demand is more sensitive than heating demand, apartments are more sensitive than office buildings, and passive survivability is more sensitive than energy performance;for buildings of the same type located in the same climate zone, thermal design solutions determine the increase rate of cooling demand. The potential benefits of climate warming on heating demand reduction are almost zero, but the cooling demand increases significantly, with apartments and office buildings increasing up to 22.1% and 5.0%,respectively.Buildings generally overheat in the future, and the increase rate of the mild zone far exceeds other zones with duration and severity being 3004.8% and 877.7%for apartments, and 884.3% and 288.9%for office buildings, respectively. | Ran Wang Shilei Lu Xue Zhai Wei Feng | 2022 | Building Simulation2022,15,7: | 4
Catalpol improves impaired neurovascular unit in ischemic stroke rats via enhancing VEGF-PI3K/AKT and VEGF-MEK1/2/ERK1/2 signaling显示文摘Neurovascular unit(NVU)is organized multi-cellular and multi-component networks that are essential for brain health and brain homeostasis maintaining.Neurovascular unit dysfunction is the central pathogenesis process of ischemic stroke. Thus integrated protection of NVU holds great therapeutic potential for ischemic stroke.Catalpol, classified into the iridoid monosaccharide glycoside,is the main active ingredient of the radix from traditional Chinese medicine,Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch, that exhibits protective effects in several brain-related diseases. In the present study,we investigated whether catalpol exerted protective effects for NVU in ischemic stroke and the underlying mechanisms.MCAO rats were administered catalpol(2.5,5.0,10.0 mg·kg^(−1)·d^(−1),i.v.)for 14 days.We showed that catalpol treatment dose-dependently reduced the infarction volume and significantly attenuated neurological deficits score in MCAO rats.Furthermore, catalpol treatment significantly ameliorated impaired NVU in ischemic region by protecting vessel-neuron-astrocyte structures and morphology, and promoting angiogenesis and neurogenesis to replenish lost vessels and neurons. Moreover, catalpol treatment significantly increased the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)through up-regulating PI3K/AKT signaling, followed by increasing FAK and Paxillin and activating PI3K/AKT and MEK1/2/ERK1/2 pathways. The protective mechanisms of catalpol were confirmed in an in vitro three-dimensional NVU model subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation. In conclusion, catalpol protects NVU in ischemic region via activation of PI3K/AKT signaling and increased VEGF production;VEGF further enhances PI3K/AKT and MEK1/2/ERK1/2 signaling, which may trigger a partly feed-forward loop to protect NVU from ischemic stroke. | Hong-jin Wang Hai-feng Ran Yue Yin Xiao-gang Xu Bao-xiang Jiang Shi-qi Yu Yi-jin Chen Hui-jing Ren Shan Feng Ji-fen Zhang Yi Chen Qiang Xue Xiao-yu Xu | 2022 | Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2022,43,7: | 4
Clinical features and risk factors associated with severe COVID-19 patients in China显示文摘Background::Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),has rapidly spread throughout the world. In this study,we aimed to identify the risk factors for severe COVID-19 to improve treatment guidelines.Methods::A multicenter,cross-sectional study was conducted on 313 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.Patients were classified into two groups based on disease severity(nonsevere and severe)according to initial clinical presentation.Laboratory test results and epidemiological and clinical characteristics were analyzed using descriptive statistics.Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to detect potential risk factors associated with severe COVID-19.Results::A total of 289 patients(197 nonsevere and 92 severe cases)with a median age of 45.0(33.0,61.0)years were included in this study, and 53.3%(154/289)were male.Fever(192/286,67.1%)and cough(170/289,58.8%)were commonly observed, followed by sore throat(49/289,17.0%).Multivariate logistic regression analysis suggested that patients who were aged≥65 years(OR:2.725,95%confidence interval[CI]:1.317-5.636;P=0.007),were male(OR:1.878,95%CI:1.002-3.520,P=0.049),had comorbid diabetes(OR:3.314,95%CI:1.126-9.758,P=0.030),cough(OR:3.427,95%CI:1.752-6.706,P<0.001),and/or diarrhea(OR:2.629,95%CI:1.109-6.231,P=0.028)on admission had a higher risk of severe disease. Moreover, stratification analysis indicated that male patients with diabetes were more likely to have severe COVID-19(71.4%vs.28.6%,χ2=8.183,P=0.004).Conclusions::The clinical characteristics of those with severe and nonsevere COVID-19 were significantly different. The elderly, male patients with COVID-19,diabetes,and presenting with cough and/or diarrhea on admission may require close monitoring to prevent deterioration. | Ning Jiang Yan-Nan Liu Jing Bao Ran Li Wen-Tao Ni Xing-Yu Tan Yu Xu Li-Ping Peng Xiao-Rong Wang Yi-Ming Zeng Dai-Shun Liu Qing Xue Jia-Shu Li Ke Hu Ya-Li Zheng Zhan-Cheng Gao | 2021 | Chinese Medical Journal2021,,8: | 3

Reliability of a Novel Cobb Protractor for Measuring the Cobb Angle of Radiograph in Scoliosis显示文摘Objective To introduce a novel Cobb protractor and assess its reliability and rapidity for measuring Cobb angle in scoliosis patients. Methods The novel Cobb protractor had two endplate markers. A measurement was performed just to align the two markers to each endplate of the curve. The Cobb angle on the posteroanterior radiographs of 24 patients clinically diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis was measured by three orthopedic surgeons with both standard Cobb method and the new technique, and the time of measurement was recorded. Intraclass correlation coefficients(ICCs) were calculated to assess the reliability of the new method. Results The time for a measurement with the new tool was approximately 10 seconds less than the time that used to finish a measurement with the standard method(P<0.05). The overall mean Cobb angle for the major curve of the 24 patients was 47.8°. The mean overall intraobserver and interobserver ICC was 0.971 and 0.971 for the Cobb method group, while the overall intraobserver ICC and the interobserver was 0.985 and 0.979 for the new tool group. Conclusions The novel Cobb protractor could perform quick measurement and measure almost all forms of radiographs. The Cobb protractor might be an ideal instrument to measure the Cobb angle. | Gui Wu Hai Wang Ran Ding Xu-hong Xue Zhi-hong Wu Gui-xing Qiu | 2015 | Chinese Medical Sciences Journal2015,30,1: | 2
Experimental realization of a quantum image classifier via tensor-network-based machine learning显示文摘Quantum machine learning aspires to overcome intractability that currently limits its applicability to practical applications. However, quantum machine learning itself is limited by low effective dimensions achievable in stateof-the-art experiments. Here,we demonstrate highly successful classifications of real-life images using photonic qubits, combining a quantum tensor-network representation of hand-written digits and entanglement-based optimization.Specifically,we focus on binary classification for hand-written zeroes and ones, whose features are cast into the tensor-network representation, further reduced by optimization based on entanglement entropy and encoded into two-qubit photonic states. We then demonstrate image classification with a high success rate exceeding 98%,through successive gate operations and projective measurements.Although we work with photons, our approach is amenable to other physical realizations such as nitrogen-vacancy centers, nuclear spins, and trapped ions, and our scheme can be scaled to efficient multi-qubit encodings of features in the tensor-product representation, thereby setting the stage for quantum-enhanced multi-class classification. | KUNKUN WANG LEI XIAO WEI YI SHI-JU RAN PENG XUE | 2021 | Photonics Research2021,9,12: | 2

The Msi1-mTOR pathway drives the pathogenesis of mammary and extramammary Paget’s disease显示文摘Mammary and extramammary Paget’s Diseases(PD)are a malignant skin cancer characterized by the appearance of Paget cells.Although easily diagnosed, its pathogenesis remains unknown.Here,single-cell RNA-sequencing identified distinct cellular states, novel biomarkers, and signaling pathways—including mTOR,associated with extramammary PD.Interestingly,we identified MSI1 ectopic overexpression in basal epithelial cells of human PD skin, and show that Msi1 overexpression in the epidermal basal layer of mice phenocopies human PD at histopathological,single-cell and molecular levels.Using this mouse model,we identified novel biomarkers of Paget-like cells that translated to human Paget cells.Furthermore,single-cell trajectory,RNA velocity and lineage-tracing analyses revealed a putative keratinocyte-to-Paget-like cell conversion, supporting the in situ transformation theory of disease pathogenesis.Mechanistically, the Msi1-mTOR pathway drives keratinocyte-Paget-like cell conversion, and suppression of mTOR signaling with Rapamycin significantly rescued the Paget-like phenotype in Msi1-overexpressing transgenic mice.Topical Rapamycin treatment improved extramammary PD-associated symptoms in humans, suggesting mTOR inhibition as a novel therapeutic treatment in PD. | Yongli Song Christian F.Guerrero-Juarez Zhongjian Chen Yichen Tang Xianghui Ma Cong Lv Xueyun Bi Min Deng Lina Bu Yuhua Tian Ruiqi Liu Ran Zhao Jiuzhi Xu Xiaole Sheng Sujuan Du Yeqiang Liu Yunlu Zhu Shi-jun Shan Hong-duo Chen Yiqiang Zhao Guangbiao Zhou Jianwei Shuai Fazheng Ren Lixiang Xue Zhaoxia Ying Xing Dai Christopher J.Lengner Bogi Andersen Maksim V.Plikus Qing Nie Zhengquan Yu-Show | 2020 | Cell Research2020,30,10: | 2

Experimental realization of nonadiabatic holonomic single‐qubit quantum gates with two dark paths in a trapped ion显示文摘For circuit-based quantum computation, experimental implementation of a universal set of quantum logic gates with high-fidelity and strong robustness is essential and central.Quantum gates induced by geometric phases, which depend only on global properties of the evolution paths, have built-in noise-resilience features. Here,we propose and experimentally demonstrate nonadiabatic holonomic single-qubit quantum gates on two dark paths in a trapped ^(171)γδ^(+)ion based on four-level systems with resonant drives. We confirm the implementation with measured gate fidelity through both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking methods.Meanwhile,we find that nontrivial holonomic two-qubit quantum gates can also be realized within current experimental technologies.Compared with previous implementations, our experiments share both the advantages of fast nonadiabatic evolution and robustness against systematic errors. Therefore, our experiments confirm a promising method for fast and robust holonomic quantum computation. | Ming-Zhong Ai Sai Li Ran He Zheng-Yuan Xue Jin-Ming Cui Yun-Feng Huang Chuan-Feng Li Guang-Can Guo | 2022 | Fundamental Research2022,2,5: | 1
