Advances and development trends in eco-friendly pavements显示文摘The major contemporary in road pavement engineering is related to the creation of green and sustainable infrastructures,e.g.,reduction of environmental impacts, increase in traffic safety, and transportation efficiency, etc. This review presents the recent trends in research and the technical solutions developed so far to address these challenges. After the analysis of research status in the past decades,a novel technology system of eco-friendly pavements is proposed considering two solutions, materials modification and structure improvement. The construction of an eco-friendly pavement can be achieved thanks to several different technologies ensuring permeable,noise-reducing,self-luminous,and exhaust-decomposing properties as well as apporting lower heat absorbing and enhanced anti-/de-icing characteristics.A systematic review of these technologies is presented pivoting on four main aspects:technical principle, material and structural composition, performance evaluation, and engineering application. The current trend in road engineering is combining the pavement infrastructure with various eco-friendly functions,e.g.,water permeability, noise reduction, low heat absorption, exhaust gas decomposition, and anti-/de-icing.Finally,the review lists the drawbacks of the existing technologies, including high cost, single function, etc.,and depicts the future developing direction and architecture of the next generation of eco-friendly pavements in which the road infrastructure should have more environmentally friendly functions than the existing technology. | Aimin Sha Zhuangzhuang Liu Wei Jiang Lin Qi Liqun Hu Wenxiu Jiao Diego Maria Barbieri | 2021 | Journal of Road Engineering2021,1,1: | 9
Highway constructions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau:Challenge, research and practice显示文摘Highway constructions on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)face great challenges induced by the unique local environmental, geological, and engineering conditions. The large area of permafrost, great temperature variability, strong UV rays, and complex geological conditions are the major factors that adversely influence the longterm performance of pavement systems.Since 1960s,Chinese engineers and researchers have started conducting research on the QTP to enhance the performance and durability of pavement systems. The present paper provide a comprehensive review of challenge, research and practice of highway constructions on the QTP including the special environmental and geological conditions, history of highway constructions on the QTP,major challenges and the state-of-the-art technology of subgrade constructions on permafrost, developments of the pavement structures and materials, performance prediction and maintenance methods of pavement surfaces, and applications of the research achievements on the first expressway on the QTP(i.e.,Gongyu Expressway).Based on the comprehensive literature review,it can be found that(1)frost heave and thaw weakening induced subgrade disease and longitudinal cracks on the pavement surface are complex coupled water-thermal-load problems.Engineering solutions are focusing on active cooling and thermal insulation methods, which can help to reduce temperature variations in the subgrade and thus improving its stability,(2)the harsh environmental and construction conditions may reduce the early strength and induce premature damage of cement-treated base materials. Some field validations showed that geocell-reinforced or asphalt-treated flexible base materials can provide better long-term performance,(3)the large temperature variability and strong UV rays can significantly accelerate aging of asphalt binders and greatly reduce the service life of asphalt mixtures.Various binder modification methods were developed for improving their viscoelasticity and enhance the low-temperature cracking resistance of pavement surface materials but are still lack of field validation data and comparisons of their life cycle costs. Therefore,it is recommended that a demonstration research project build test sections to examine a range of pavement structures and materials, and compare their long-term performance and life cycle costs, which can serve as important reference for future highway constructions on the QTP. | Aimin Sha Biao Ma Hainian Wang Liqun Hu Xuesong Mao Xilan Zhi Huaxin Chen Yu Liu Feng Ma Zhuangzhuang Liu Rui He Wei Si Xuhao Wang Cheng Li | 2022 | Journal of Road Engineering2022,2,1: | 4

Aging effects on rheological properties of high viscosity modified asphalt显示文摘This work investigated the aging effects on the rheological properties of high viscosity modified asphalt(HVMA).First, the high-and low-temperature rheological properties were measured by a dynamic shear rheometer and a bending beam rheometer, respectively. The aging mechanism was then tested using an Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and a scanning electron microscope.Besides,a study was performed to compare the aging effects on the rheological properties of HVMA,crumb rubber modified asphalt(CRMA),and neat asphalt(SK-90).The experimental results showed that the effects of the long-term aging on HVMA exceeded those of short-term aging. The complex shear modulus of the HVMA was improved by the aging in the whole frequency range. The complex shear modulus of the HVMA after the long-term aging was larger than after the short-term aging. Thus, the aging improved the high-temperature viscoelastic performance of HVMA.With a decrease in temperature from-12℃to-24℃,the low-temperature viscoelastic performance of HVMA decreased since its stiffness modulus and low continuous grading temperature increase. Both of the short-and long-term aging of HVMA were caused by an oxidation reaction, while modifier swelling also happened after long-term aging.Compared to CRMA and SK-90,aging had a limited influence on the high-and low-temperature rheological properties of HVMA. | Wei Jiang Dongdong Yuan Zheng Tong Aimin Sha Jingjing Xiao Meng Jia Wanli Ye Wentong Wang | 2023 | Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2023,10,2: | 1
Pavement structure and materials design for sea-crossing bridges and tunnel:Case study of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge显示文摘With the continuous development of bridge and tunnel construction technologies,large-scale sea-crossing bridges and tunnels have gradually become the preferred choice for regional traffic. The construction technology of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB),one of the most representative sea-crossing passageways,is instructive for the construction of other large sea-crossing infrastructures. At present, the pavement design method of sea-crossing passageways lacks pertinence as it still refers to specifications for design of common pavement. Therefore,it is necessary to consider the bridge and tunnel pavement of HZMB as a typical example to analyze key technical problems encountered in its design, construction and operation.Novel solutions for material selection and structural design built upon the analysis of such critical problems should thus follow up.Based on comprehensive literature research,it can be found that environmental variability, tunnel closure, structural differential settlement and expansion deformation are the key technical problems faced by pavement of sea-crossing passageways. In view of the environmental variability, the steel deck-paving material and structure design of GMA-10 t SMA-13 is innovatively proposed. As for the closure of immersed tube tunnel,warm-mix flame retardant asphalt mixture is used to control pavement design through key indexes such as temperature and limit oxygen index.Regarding the deformation of immersed pipe joints,BJ200 asphalt seamless expansion joint material is introduced, which effectively satisfies the multi-directional deformation between pipe joints and ensures the smoothness of the road surface and driving comfort. For segmental joints,double-layer waterproof-coiled material is used to effectively prevent reflective cracks while ensuring the continuity of asphalt concrete pavement. Therefore, this paper provides a panel of ideas and methods for the pavement design of the same type of sea-crossing passageways. | Aimin Sha Wei Jiang Jinhuan Shan Wangjie Wu Yupeng Li Shuangjiao Zhang | 2022 | Journal of Road Engineering2022,2,2: | 1

Establishment of a three-dimensional particle library for graded crushed stone based on a new aggregate morphology characterization method显示文摘The morphology of graded crushed stone(GCS)particles has an essential influence on the performance of aggregate mixtures. The impact of particle shape is a comprehensive effect that cannot be considered separately, leading to difficulties in establishing the relationship between the mixture properties and the aggregate morphology by using laboratory methods. The discrete element method(DEM)is an effective way widely adopted to reconstruct the morphology of particles and simulate performance tests of granular materials. However, selecting limited particles characterizing a real particle-assembly for simulation is still a challenge in current research due to the inherent rich variability of particle shapes. In this study, based on the acquisition of three-dimensional(3D)aggregate shapes by using laser scanning, ellipsoid index(EDI)translating the particle shape as a function of surface area, volume, and contour length is proposed to comprehensively evaluate aggregate morphology.Further,a particle library capable of characterizing aggregate morphology distribution is established based on the statistics of the corresponding morphological characteristics of particle samples. The model reliability is validated by carrying out a series of experimental and numerical penetration tests with nine different gradations. The established particle library can be used to model aggregate mixtures and the proposed simulation framework is promising for optimizing the mixture gradation design numerically. | Haitao Ge Aimin Sha Zhenqiang Han | 2024 | Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering(English Edition)2024,11,1: | 0
