| 3 | Terrestrial carbon sinks in China and around the world and their contribution to carbon neutrality显示文摘Enhancing the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink(referred to as terrestrial C sink) is an important way to slow down the continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality target.To better understand the characteristics of terrestrial C sinks and their contribution to carbon neutrality,this review summarizes major progress in terrestrial C budget researches during the past decades,clarifies spatial patterns and drivers of terrestrial C sources and sinks in China and around the world,and examines the role of terrestrial C sinks in achieving carbon neutrality target.According to recent studies,the global terrestrial C sink has been increasing from a source of (-0.2±0.9) Pg C yr^(-1)(1 Pg=1015g)in the 1960s to a sink of (1.9±1.1) Pg C yr^(-1) in the 2010s.By synthesizing the published data,we estimate terrestrial C sink of 0.20–0.25 Pg C yr^(-1) in China during the past decades,and predict it to be 0.15–0.52 Pg C yr^(-1) by 2060.The terrestrial C sinks are mainly located in the mid-and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere,while tropical regions act as a weak C sink or source.The C balance differs much among ecosystem types:forest is the major C sink;shrubland,wetland and farmland soil act as C sinks;and whether the grassland functions as C sink or source remains unclear.Desert might be a C sink,but the magnitude and the associated mechanisms are still controversial.Elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentration,nitrogen deposition,climate change,and land cover change are the main drivers of terrestrial C sinks,while other factors such as fires and aerosols would also affect ecosystem C balance.The driving factors of terrestrial C sink differ among regions.Elevated CO_(2) concentration and climate change are major drivers of the C sinks in North America and Europe,while afforestation and ecological restoration are additionally important forcing factors of terrestrial C sinks in China.For future studies,we recommend the necessity for intensive and long-term ecosystem C monitoring over broad geographic scale to improve terrestrial biosphere models for accurately evaluating terrestrial C budget and its dynamics under various climate change and policy scenarios. | Yuanhe Yang Yue Shi Wenjuan Sun Jinfeng Chang Jianxiao Zhu Leiyi Chen Xin Wang Yanpei Guo Hongtu Zhang Lingfei Yu Shuqing Zhao Kang Xu Jiangling Zhu Haihua Shen Yuanyuan Wang Yunfeng Peng Xia Zhao Xiangping Wang Huifeng Hu Shiping Chen Mei Huang Xuefa Wen Shaopeng Wang Biao Zhu Shuli Niu Zhiyao Tang Lingli Liu Jingyun Fang | 2022 | Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,5: | 32 |

| 9 | Observation of mega-dune evaporation after various rain events in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert, China显示文摘The formation mechanisms of the mega-dunes and lakes in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert,China,is the focus of extensive academic research in the field of geoscience,and an often debated topic is whether atmospheric precipitation on the mega-dune can infiltrate to recharge groundwater.In the present study,the probability distribution functions and the return period analysis of extreme daily precipitation based on long-term precipitation records for the southern margin of Badain Jaran Desert and 2-year observation of hinterland precipitation were used to classify precipitation in the desert region.The data of automatic weather station and eddy covariance system in the desert hinterland were used to analyze evaporation on the mega-dune surface after various rain events.The results showed that the rain events in the desert could be divided into three categories.The first is conventional precipitation(CP),which is below 5 mm,accounting for roughly 90%of all rain events in the desert.The second and third categories are ordinary annual maximum(OAM)and extreme precipitation(EP),in which precipitation is roughly 20 mm and more than 40 mm,respectively.The atmospheric precipitation of CP and OAM evaporated from the megadune surface in 1–3 days and 3–4 weeks,respectively.Following an EP event,the mega-dune evaporation was negatively influenced by the upper dry sand layer,and a lengthy period was required for its complete removal.The accumulative evaporation and accumulative precipitation of all three types of rain events indicated that local atmospheric precipitation had no significant contribution to recharging the groundwater system in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert.This research will benefit comprehensive elucidation of the formation mechanism of lakes in the hinterland of Badain Jaran Desert. | Ning Ma Naiang Wang Liqiang Zhao Zhenyu Zhang Chunyu Dong Shiping Shen | 2014 | Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,2: | 14 |
| 10 | Rice MtN3/saliva/SWEET gene family: Evolution,expression profiling, and sugar transport显示文摘The rice MtN3/saliva/SWEET gene family consists of21 paralogs. However, their functions in physiological processes are largely unknown, although at least three of the 21 paralogs are used by pathogenic bacteria to infect rice.Here, we report the evolutionary features, transcriptional characteristics, and putative functions in sugar transport of this gene family. The wild rice accessions in this study included those with AA, BB, CC, BBCC, CCDD, EE, and GG genomes,which appeared approximately 0.58–14.6 million years ago.The structures, chromosomal locations, phylogenetic relationships, and homologous distribution among the accessions suggest that the number of rice MtN3/saliva/SWEET paralogs gradually increased as the Oryza genus evolved, and one third of the paralogs may have originated recently. These paralogs are differentially expressed in vegetative and reproductive tissues, in the leaf senescence process, and in signaling dependent on gibberellic acid, cytokinin, or 1-naphthalene acetic acid(an analog of auxin), suggesting that they may be associated with multiple physiological processes. Four paral ogs could transport galactose in yeast, which suggests tha they may have a similar function in rice. Although electrochemical method is sensitive for DNA detection on surfaces, the ability of surface assay to precisely recognize DNA hybridization event is sacrificed to some extent due to the crowded confined surfaces environments that disfavor DNA hybridization. In the present study, we employed branched tetrahedron structure probes (TSPs) to replace regular linear single stranded DNA capture probes that were immobilized on solid surfaces. This three-dimensional DNA nanostructure lowers the density of immobilized DNA probes on confined surfaces, providing a hybridization environment that is similar to homogenous solution. | 12 | Plant phenological responses to climate change on the Tibetan Plateau: research status and challenges显示文摘Phenology studies the cycle of events in nature that are initiated and driven by an annually recurring environment. Plant phenology is expected to be one of the most sensitive and easily observable natural indicators of climate change. On the Tibetan Plateau(TP), an accelerated warming since the mid-1980 s has resulted in signiicant environmental changes. hese new conditions are accompanied by phenological changes that are characterized by considerable spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Satellite remote sensing observed widespread advance in the start of the plant growing season across the plateau during the 1980 s and 1990 s but substantial delay over 2000–2011 in the southwest although it continued to advance in the northeast regions of the TP. Both observational studies and controlled experiments have revealed, to some extent, the positive role of higher preseason temperature and even more precipitation in advancing the leaf onset and irst lowering date of the TP. However, a number of rarely visited research issues that are essential for understanding the role of phenology in ecosystem responses and feedback processes to climate change remain to be solved. Our review recommends that addressing the following questions should be a high priority. How did other phenological events change, such as lowering and fruiting phenology? What are the inluences from environmental changes other than temperature and precipitation, including human activities such as grazing? What are the genetic and physiological bases of plants phenological responses?How does phenological change inluence ecosystem structure and function at diferent scales and feedback to the climate system? | 14 | Internet of Things to network smart devices for ecosystem monitoring显示文摘Smart, real-time, low-cost, and distributed ecosystem monitoring is essential for understanding and managing rapidly changing ecosystems. However, new techniques in the big data era have rarely been introduced into operational ecosystem monitoring, particularly for fragile ecosystems in remote areas.We introduce the Internet of Things(IoT) techniques to establish a prototype ecosystem monitoring system by developing innovative smart devices and using IoT technologies for ecosystem monitoring in isolated environments. The developed smart devices include four categories: large-scale and nonintrusive instruments to measure evapotranspiration and soil moisture, in situ observing systems for CO2 and d13 C associated with soil respiration, portable and distributed devices for monitoring vegetation variables, and Bi-CMOS cameras and pressure trigger sensors for terrestrial vertebrate monitoring. These new devices outperform conventional devices and are connected to each other via wireless communication networks. The breakthroughs in the ecosystem monitoring IoT include new data loggers and longdistance wireless sensor network technology that supports the rapid transmission of data from devices to wireless networks. The applicability of this ecosystem monitoring IoT is verified in three fragile ecosystems, including a karst rocky desertification area, the National Park for Amur Tigers, and the oasis-desert ecotone in China. By integrating these devices and technologies with an ecosystem monitoring information system, a seamless data acquisition, transmission, processing, and application IoT is created. | 16 | Pathogen-inducible OsMPKKI 0.2-OsMPK6 cascade phosphorylates the Raf-like kinase OsEDRI and inhibits its scaffold function to promote rice disease resistance显示文摘Mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)cascades regulate a myriad of plant biological processes,including disease resistance.Plant genomes encode a large number of MAPK kinase kinases(MAPKKKs)that can be divided into two subfamilies,namely MEKK-like kinases and Raf-like kinases.Thus far,the func-tions of MEKK-like MAPKKKs have been relatively well characterized,but the roles of Raf-like MAPKKKs in.plant MAPK cascades remain less understood.Here,we report the role of OsEDR1,a Raf-like MAPKKK,in the regulation of the MAPK cascade in rice response tp the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzicola(Xoc).We found that OsEDR1 inhibits OsMPKK10.2(a MAPK kinase)activity through physical interaction.Upon Xoc infection,OsMPKK10.2 is phosphorylated at S304 to activate OsMPK6(a MAPK).Interestingly,activated OsMPK6 phosphorylates OsEDR1 at S861,which destabilizes OsEDR1 and thus releases the inhibition of OsMPKK10.2,leading to increased OsMPKK10.2 activity and enhanced resistance of rice plants to Xoc.Taken together,these results provide new insights into the functions of Raf-like ki-nases in the regulation of the MAPK cascade in plant immunity. | Haigang Ma Juan Li Ling Ma Peilun Wang Yuan Xue Ping Yin Jinghua Xiao Shiping Wang | 2021 | Molecular Plant2021,14,4: | 9 |
| 17 | Multiple Alleles Encoding Atypical NLRs with Unique Central Tandem Repeats in Rice Confer Resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae显示文摘Plants have developed various mechanisms for avoiding pathogen invasion,including resistance(R)genes.Most R genes encode nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat containing proteins(NLRs).Here,we report the isolation of three new bacterial blight R genes in rice,Xa1-2,Xa14,and Xa31(t),which were allelic to Xa1 and encoded atypical NLRs with unique central tandem repeats(CTRs).We also found that Xa31(t)was the same gene as Xa1-2.Although Xa1-2 and Xa14 conferred different resistance spectra,their performance could be attenuated by iTALEs,as has previously been reported for Xa1.XA1,XA1-2,XA14,and non-resistant RGAF differed mainly in the substructure of the leucine-rich repeat domain.They all contained unique CTRs and belonged to the CTR-NLRs,which existed only in Gramineae.We also found that interactions among these genes led to differing resistance performance.In conclusion,our results uncover a unique locus in rice consisting of at least three multiple alleles(Xa1,Xa1-2,and Xa14)that encode CTRNLRs and confer resistance to Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae(Xoo). | Biaoming Zhang Haitao Zhang Fang Li Yidan Ouyang Meng Yuan Xianghua Li Jinghua Xiao Shiping Wang | 2020 | Plant Communications2020,1,4: | 8 |

| 20 | Identification of genes contributing to quantitative disease resistance in rice显示文摘Despite the importance of quantitative disease resistance during a plant’s life, little is known about the molecular basis of this type of host-pathogen interaction, because most of the genes underlying resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are unknown. To identify genes contributing to resistance QTLs in rice, we analyzed the colocalization of a set of characterized rice defense-responsive genes and resistance QTLs against different pathogens. We also examined the expression patterns of these genes in response to pathogen infection in the parents of the mapping populations, based on the strategy of validation and functional analysis of the QTLs. The results suggest that defense-responsive genes are important resources of resistance QTLs in rice. OsWRKY45-1 is the gene contributing to a major resistance QTL.NRR,OsGH3-1,and OsGLP members on chromosome 8 contribute alone or collectively to different minor resistance QTLs.
